SUNRISE SAIL OFFERS TIME ON THE WATER AT LANIER AND BEYOND

sk Dan Kingery what he loves most about his business and he doesn’t hesitate. “Our members and students may have different goals, but teaching people how to reach their dreams is what we’re all about,” says
the owner of SunRise Sail, which operates SunRise Sailing Academy and two sailing clubs: FreeTime Sailing Fleet and SunRise Sail at Sunrise Cove Marina on Lake Lanier. Kingery started sailing at age 20 in Central Indiana. When he came to Georgia 35
years ago, he quickly became part of the active sailing community here, particularly with Southern Sailing Club and Lake Lanier Sailing Club. He didn’t limit himself to Lake Lanier. “I’ve chartered in the Caribbean, the San Juan Islands and British Columbia.”

In 2006, he joined forces with the late Jim Abernathy, who brought a SailTime franchise to the lake. That program, based on fractional ownership of boats, evolved into SunRise Sail by 2011 when Dan became the owner. “At the time we had four boats, but today we have 16,” Kingery says. “We have a good variety of boats, from those with tillers to boats with wheels and inboard engines. And about 18 months ago, we added a 35-foot catamaran.” SunRise Sailing Academy offers private lessons to certify students in levels from basic sailing through catamaran cruising through the American Sailing Association. In addition to Dan, SunRise Sailing Academy has three instructors, Mike Pendley, who has been an ASA-certified instructor for 30 years; Jim Peta, who has been sailing on Lake Lanier since 1977 and also holds ASA instructors’ certifications and US Coast Guard Captains’ License; and Shaun Northcutt, who also holds ASA instructors’ certifications and US Coast Guard Captains’
“This is such an affordable way to get sailing time. It’s appreciably less money than owning your own boat and all that comes with it.” — Dan Kingery License. All have logged thousands of miles sailing on lakes, rivers and blue water. “With private lessons, we can focus on the student’s goals,” he says. “Some of them sailed when they were younger and want to get back into the sport. Others dream of chartering a cruising boat for a week or
more in the Caribbean or the British Virgin Islands.” When people come to SunRise Sail, Dan spends time talking with them about their goals. “This is an important part of our program,” he says. “For instance, if someone is only interested in day sailing, a basic keelboat certification may be enough to help them learn how to handle a sailboat on the lake, how to navigate and operate the boat safely. We train them to be prepared for all kinds of situations and to manage the boat in different weather and boating conditions. “We do find that some people want to build on their knowledge with a goal of boat ownership or spending time skippering in exotic places,” he says. “Learning to sail on our 41-foot Hunter or our Gemini Legacy 35 catamaran gives them a completely different set of skills.” Once a student is certified, membership in the FreeTime Sailing Fleet or SunRise Sail is available, offering access to sailboats

without the expense of ongoing maintenance, slip fees and other associated costs. Members can use the fleet’s boats for a monthly fee, contracted yearly. Cost is based on the size and type of boat. “This is such an affordable way to get sailing time,” he says. “It’s appreciably less money than owning your own boat and all that comes with it.” The FreeTime Sailing Fleet club level includes day sailing on boats from 27 to 30 feet long, with either tillers or wheels and inboard. The SunRise Sail level provides access to cruising boats from 30 to 41 feet, plus the catamaran. The day sailing option provides a full day of sailing on weekdays and boats for half days on the weekends. Members can use the cruising boats overnight, giving them experience needed to bareboat charter. Dan’s love of sailing got him into the sailing business, but these days he admits he’s not logging much on-the-water time. “That’s okay with me, most of the time, because I really enjoy watching people get excited about learning to sail,” he says. “It’s true that the last time I went sailing for fun was more than a year ago, when a group of friends and I chartered a boat for a week in the Grenadines. It was an amazing time, but it also reminded me that through SunRise Sail, I can share this sport with people of all ages. “That’s the beauty of sailing,” he says. “No matter what your age and your interests, if you can learn to safely handle a boat on the water, you can go wherever you want — from lake sailing for an afternoon to cruising for a week or more on blue water.” For more information, visit www.sunrisesailingclub.com or call Dan at (770) 271-7444. ake Lanier has plenty of perks including access to some of the best boating, fishing, floating and scenery in the Southeast. It’s no surprise that it’s also one of the best options for a place to call home. Maybe now, more than ever. “Lake Lanier, with its miles and miles of shoreline, is a great option for your dream
home,” said Ron Reed, co-owner and head of construction management with The Reed Brothers Design & Build. “From gated neighborhoods to secluded lots to community marinas, and more, finding exactly what’s right for you is out there, and they are certainly worth the effort to find.” “It has that small town feel, but is still
so close to Atlanta,” added his brother, Todd W. Reed, co-owner of the company in charge of architectural design and estimating. “There is still a fair amount of availability for building on the lake inside some great communities, as well as opportunities to transform weekend getaway homes into full time residences.”
ABOVE: The home of Bill and Jan Hunter at Harbour Point on Lake Lanier offers the couple a spectacular view of the water.
14 | HOME | May 2019
Just ask The Hunters. Texas transplants Bill and Jan already loved life on the water thanks to a second home on Galveston Bay, but when the number of grandkids increased, they wanted to be closer to family and make memories together. The Hunters broke ground in January of 2018, and moved in one year later. “The view was just incredible,” said Jan Hunter about their home site in Harbour Point. “But just looking at the lot, we couldn’t visualize how a house would work on it. The Reed Brothers helped us start to see it, and we worked together on a design for about a year.” The result is a stately home that sits in the corner of its unique lot, nestled peacefully into the hill and maximizing the incredible views of Lake Lanier and the foothills of The Appalachian Mountains. “This is the first home we’ve ever built,” said Bill Hunter. “But the way [The Reed Brothers] managed it was really, really smooth. I love the relationship we have
with them, they’re very honest and up front, and throughout the entire process there were never any surprises. They had everything planned out ahead of time, so our trips over here could be efficient and productive.” “You can’t just buy a stock blueprint from a magazine and plop it on any lake lot and expect it to work out,” Todd W. Reed said. “Careful planning is what creates a great finished result.” For the Hunter’s extreme slopes and soil conditions, that meant Reed Brothers installing more than 130 helical piers to anchor it to the hillside. These giant screws were drilled into the soil and attached to concrete footings. The end result is one of the best views in Hall County. “When designing a lake home, those water views are crucial,” said Todd W. Reed. “You want to be able to see the water as soon as you walk in the front door and in every room possible.” In fact, that’s one of the three goals The

Open, expansive space with view-filled windows made this floor plan ideal.
Hunters had in mind for their new home, plus everything Bill and Jan would need for living on the main floor in an open concept floor plan. “This house is bigger than we initially intended it to be,” admitted Jan. “But we wanted to have enough space for our family, and a place where everyone could gather together. Being able to wake up, and look at these views is just an incredible thing. We don’t even close our shades at night, so that we can see the stars at night, and lake first thing in the morning.” Not every dream house on the lake has to be custom built. In fact, Marina Bay on Lanier exists to give homebuyers options for a gorgeous home with only one decision to make — buy or build. “Our buyers say Marina Bay gives them a sense of peace and happiness because it feels so well done and there is a sense of kindness and caring from the neighbors, plus serenity that being on the water creates,” said Susan Verlander, managing broker for Marina Bay. “Residents have told me when they first came through the canopy of trees they knew this was their forever home and that they wanted to have this feeling every day. “Now is a great time to think about living on the lake — especially at Marina Bay because we are growing,” she added. “We 16 | HOME | May 2019

uring his 30-plus years as Brad The Dock Doctor, Brad Chesnut has seen neglected cable systems, rusted nails and screws on docks, broken and damaged dock boards and submerged ramps. But a few instances of unsecured docks and boats have proven the most memorable. “I saw a brand-new expensive ski boat floating near Tidwell Park (near Cumming),” said Chesnut, owner and operator of Brad The Dock Doctor business. “I called the woman and told her I found her boat adrift on the lake.”
The woman denied it was her ski boat, saying a new boat lift had recently been installed. He told the woman he found the boat’s registration number, which identified her and her husband as the owners. Therefore, it had to be their boat. “She said ‘Hold on. Let me look,’” Chesnut said. “She came back on the phone and said ‘My boat’s gone!’” Chesnut explained the boat may have drifted away if the boat lift has a leak, which is a common problem. Simply tying the boat to the dock with a rope is an extra precaution.

This is one of many examples that dock owners can take to ensure the safety and security of their docks on Lake Lanier. Here are some more. Step 1: Check the dock’s securing mechanism. Aluminum and steel docks are secured to the land with a cable system or anchor system or both, depending on the style. All of them should be inspected before a person uses the dock. Chesnut said with the high water levels from this winter, cables may have been submerged in the water and rusted. If they are, they need to be repaired or replaced. For an anchor system, dock owners need to see if extra cable is hanging off the side on the sleeve. 22 | HOME | May 2019

“It allows the dock to go up and down,” Chesnut said. “It should not be restricted in any way.” Chesnut suggests installing stainless steel cables, because they are not prone to rusting. Step 2: Inspect the dock’s hinge connections for rust and any loose pins, nails or screws. Scott Twiggs, new dock salesman at Martin Docks in Gainesville, said a loose pin connecting two portions of a dock and its ramp can create a dangerous situation. “I knew of a wedding party that was standing on a ramp to take a photo, and the ramp collapsed,” he said. “Come to find out there was a hinge pin that had come out, and caused the ramp to collapse.” Checking hinge connections at the joints can prevent any dangerous situations. Step 3: Inspect electrical lines and outlets and hire a licensed electrician to make repairs. Jim Brown, proprietor of Final Word Inspections, said common electrical problems on docks are corroded electrical lines from moisture and the dock’s disconnect box, or electrical panel, is not bonded. “It can become dangerous and people can be electrocuted,” he said. Brown, who works as a home inspector, suggests a few preventative electrical maintenance steps. • Check the boat dock disconnect to ensure it is in working order and is not corroded • Replace the ground fault receptacle every two years. • Inspect your weather tight covers often for any tears or cracks in seal • Purchase a shock alert, an electrical meter, to test for electrical current in the water. “If there is any electrical current in the water, then this will start beeping,” Brown said. “I would recommend it if you have kids who swim near the dock.” He also suggests conducting annual electrical maintenance checks in early spring. “If you don’t want to do it yourselves, then hire a licensed electrician,” Brown said. Step 4: Scan for bad lumber and rusty nails and screws on older docks. Those will need to be repaired or replaced. Step 5: Check the dock edges and bumper and repair or replace as needed. Twiggs said the dock’s corners and hinge areas are the most troublesome areas.
“It’s really about paying attention in order to be safe,” he said. Step 6: Check boat lift’s hoses and tanks for leaks. “Always secure a safety line on the boat when you raise it on the lift in case you have a leak,” Chesnut said. “I found many boats on the lake that have not been secured.” Step 7: Swim around the dock with a mask searching for issues below the surface. “With the high water this year, debris has floated up and you may never know what’s under dock unless you check,” Chesnut said. “Before jumping into the water from your dock, check to see if something has hung up.” H

BUILDING A DOCK FROM BEGINNING TO END STORY BY J.K. DEVINE
T
he U.S. Corps of Engineers has stopped issuing new dock permits for Lake Lanier, but that has not put a damper on the dock builders in Hall County. Martin Docks, a family owned business that started in 1956, builds an average of 100 docks a year. Most stem from owners replacing or renovating current docks with brand-new aluminum or steel docks. Scott Twiggs, the new dock salesman at Martin Docks, said he advises owners to build the largest dock possible for financial reasons. “The resale value is worth its weight in gold because it holds its value so well,” said Twiggs, whose grandfather started Martin Docks. The largest dock allowed on Lake Lanier is a 32 feet by 32 feet, with either a double slip for two boats or a slip for
a boat and two jet skis. A sundeck can top the dock. “And, of course, you want to make the dock as maintenance free as possible,” he said. Owners then choose aesthetic aspects such as the color and style before ordering it from a dock-building business. Twiggs said it takes about two to three months to construct a custom dock at the shop off Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville. Once it’s finished, it is delivered to the homeowner. “We push it across the lake like a houseboat,” Twiggs said. “It’s neat to watch a dock launch like a ship.” He then instructs owners how to maintain the dock when lake levels rise and fall. He explained when the lake rises, the cables will loosen and need be to be tightened. The opposite happen as
the lake level drops; cables will become tight and need to be loosened. Twiggs said dock owners can tighten or loosen the cable with winches, but cautioned it is not a one-person job and can be dangerous. He said one customer tried to stop a dock winch from turning by sticking his foot out. “It hit his leg and broke it,” Twiggs said. “So you need to be careful.” After the maintenance steps are discussed, a contracted electrician is hired to wire the dock for electrical outlets. Then, the dock is typically inspected a final time by the Corps of Engineers, which issues permits. “You are basically renting the space from the Corps of Engineers,” he said. “And dock permits have to be renewed every five years.” H

sk the Lanier Crappie Anglers Club and members of the Lake Lanier Association about eating fish caught in Lake Lanier. For several years, the club caught, cleaned, fileted and fried 1,200 filets to feed members at the association’s annual meetings. “We often host fish fries for our members and their families featuring fish caught from Lake Lanier,” says Dan Saknini, president of the club. “Many times, club members catch and release the fish they catch, but it is safe to eat the fish you catch, particularly crappie and striped bass, also called stripers. Just be sure to follow the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ guidelines found on their website.” The guidelines, updated in 2018, say that

fish caught in Georgia waters are safe to eat. Suggestions include eating smaller fish within legal size limits, properly cleaning and cooking fish, freezing excess fish and spacing out meals, and removing skin and fat. Tony Jonovitch, owner of Skogie’s at Gainesville Marina, says that frying fish caught in Lake Lanier is perhaps the best way to eat them. “Frying them to an internal temperature of 140 degrees will get rid of any possible pathogens and bacteria,” he says. “Any kind of coating will do, but we really like our own recipe with 17 ingredients.” Tony says that in addition to the ingredients, which include White Lily All-Purpose Flour, Zatarain’s seafood breading, salt, pepper and other spices: “First we dip our fish in the seasoned

flour mix, then into the buttermilk — we use Mayfield’s — then back into the flour mix,” he says. “The main secret, other than which spices we use, is to start with really clean oil.” He recommends having the oil nice and hot, to a temperature of 350 degrees, before putting in the fish, testing it first to make sure that the first piece of fish comes out crispy and gold brown. As the cooking proceeds, he frequently examines a ladle full of oil to make sure it’s still clear. “We change the oil in our fryers really regularly to make sure that it’s clear, light-colored, fresh and clean,” he says. “Old or dirty grease can really affect the way your fried foods turn out.” Skogie’s dedicates one fryer to fish only to keep other foods from tasting fishy. “We even have a fryer that is never used for foods coated in flour,” he says. “We use it for our fries.” He says the restaurant uses canola oil, which he can purchase for about $20 for a 5-gallon bucket. “It takes about $1.25 worth of oil to fill our fryer so it’s not that expensive to provide the best tasting fish by using fresh oil.” He also says that the freshness of the oil will determine the color of the outside of the cooked fish. If the oil is clean, the fish will be light and golden brown. The DNR stocks fish in Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River regularly with fish raised in the state’s fish hatcheries. Common species include striped bass and crappie. “Crappie and striped bass are among the safest fish to eat from the lake,” Dan says. “Plus they’re fun to fish for.” Anyone who’s interested in fishing can join the Lanier Crappie Anglers Club, which meets monthly for education and social events. GET SOME AIR ON LAKE LANIER
W
STORY BY AMBER TYNER
ith summer right around the corner, people in north Georgia will soon be flocking to Lake Lanier for some fun in the sun. Many will be on their boats, jet skis or other fancy watercrafts, and you may even see a few soaring through the air on a flyboard. The hydroflight device, which was first launched in France by Zapata Racing in 2012, can take riders up to almost 50 feet in the air with only their feet strapped in. “Basically the flyboard is a device that hooks up to the rear of your jet ski where your jet pump is,” said Alexander Maravegias, owner of Lake Lanier Flyboard. “All the water that would normally be pushing the jet ski forward actually just gets redirected through this hose and out the bottom of the

flyboard. And that’s what creates the pressure that gives you the lift.” Maravegias was one of the first individuals to bring the flyboard to Georgia back in 2013, and he’s been giving people lessons ever since then. He now operates from his shop, which is located in Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. “The easiest way to describe what the motion is like is on the hoverboard, the little scooter,” he said about flyboarding. “It’s just about figuring out how to move forward and maneuver.” Benjamin Alig, an instructor at Lake Lanier Flyboard, said it doesn’t take too long for people to get the hang of flyboarding. “We can almost guarantee you will get up in the air,” he said. “If you were limited in your athletic abilities, I would say at most,

it’ll take 10-15 minutes for you to be able to fly up in the air consistently.” He said that while riders control the direction of the board, instructors are present to make the experience as safe and easy as possible. “The only thing the instructor is actually in charge of is power to the board, so we control
the throttle on the jet ski that provides thrust to the jets on either side of the board,” he said. “So if anything either goes wrong or they come too close to us or land, we can cut the power to the board.” Robert Mendez, 33, has been flyboarding for six years now and compared the experience to riding a bike.

“Once you find your balance, you never forget,” he said. “It’s all flying after that.” He said his first ride was both scary and exciting. “Most people feel that the first time they get out there,” he said. “They don’t know what to expect. You get that rush of, “Wow, I’m really high up here,” and that feeling of excitement, anxiety.” Mendez said he recommends flyboarding to everyone. “If you get to come out and do it, you need to do it,” he said. “It’s awesome.” But if the flyboard doesn’t sound appealing, Lake Lanier also offers the chance to wakeboard. Brandon Lee, owner of Georgia Wakeboard Lessons, said his company has a location on Lake Lanier, Lake Allatoona and Lake Oconee. “At Lanier, we won’t start till after Memorial Day,” he said. “Based on our schedule and the student schedule, it’s pretty much Monday through Friday.” 34 | HOME | May 2019
He said wakeboarding behind a boat is similar to snowboarding. “The best way to compare it would be like shooting a board halfpipe,” he said. “Because the wake is the same all the way through, you’re just going up and down, left to right.” Lee is also the director of Georgia Wake Series, an eight-stop wakeboard tournament that will visit Lake Lanier Olympic Park on June 1. “We have events across the state throughout the summer,” he said. “Half of them are tournaments behind the boat, and the other half are tournaments at cable parks. We have classes of all skill levels and ages.” He said wakeboarding at a cable park is a little different from wakeboarding behind a boat. “Wakeboarding at a cable park would be more like snowboarding going through the slopestyle course where you’ve got different obstacles to hit and ramps and stuff like that,” he said. The competition at Lake Lanier will only feature wakeboarding behind a boat, and it will be held the same day as the June 1 competition.

“We’re partnered up with the Lake Show, and our tournament’s going to run in the morning from 8 a.m. to about 4 or 5 p.m., and then the concert and all the festivities will go on later in the evening.” Lee said that participants can register online now for the competition.
“You’ve got kids all the way to adults who are riding and competing,” he said. “You can see throughout the day the skill levels progress, so the tricks get bigger, the flips get harder, the spins get more and more.” H
