RIGHT Garland Burton has a distinguished record in the development of strategic business relationships and in the implementation of programs designed to expand the inclusion of diverse populations in both public and private construction projects.

“With an aging white demographic, STEM must become this generation’s social movement, preparing our children to provide solutions to world problems that are growing in complexity,” said Burton.

BEYOND WORK

Burton is a passionate speaker and change agent with an indepth understanding of the complexities caused by centuries of institutional racism, the inherent challenges with implementation of fair hiring practices and core elements required to ensure implementation of effective affirmative action policy for contractors. Burton believes adults must do better preparing the next generation of leaders by increasing STEM college graduates. However, Burton also contends, no college, no problem. “There’s a big shortage of skilled technical labor. You can go to trade school for a 1 ½ years for positions like computer repair technician, drafter, machine

operator. You don’t need a college degree to become an electrician.”

Burton argues, that Blacks are thinking too small, focused more on buying apps rather than designing them—a STEM profession. He sees SMART Talks as critical.

WHAT’S THE WORD? Through one-on-one interactions with industry leaders, middle- and high-school students, as well as college freshmen, will be inspired to successfully pursue STEM pathways.

Speaking on the Smart Talk series, Burton stated “I was blown away seeing so many students interested in science careers. We must secure the resources to help kids nurture their innate scientific curiosity.” Tré has worked to diligently engage and allow students to learn not only of the opportunity for careers, but most meaningful, the pathway required to achive their goal.

EDUCATION

RIGHT “Policies are the rules that allow malpractice among board members, miseducation for our children, and skewed accountability for all involved.” Charles X White

PEOPLE vs HISD BY ASWAD WALKER

The saying, “Just because I’m paranoid, doesn’t mean I’m wrong” may be apropos when it comes to those who charge the Houston Independent School District (HISD) with less than honorable intentions toward Houston’s Black community.

A

dvocate Charles X White argues, HISD has done irreparable harm to Black children and families, due to detrimental educational policies, coupled with Black elected officials rewarded for their silence. The best example of this dangerous combination is what White calls the “malpractice, discrimination and theft” perpetrated by HISD via the closing of 77 schools over the years, 63 of which were in zip codes labeled vulnerable (i.e. Black and Latino). “Not one elected official questioned the board policies that allowed the orchestrated death blow to specific neighborhoods,” stated White. A partial list of schools closed includes elementary schools Grimes, Rose, and Fairchild. Ryan Middle School (now the Baylor College of Medicine at Ryan) and Jones High School (now Futures Acad-

16 TRÉ MAGAZINE thetremag.com

emy) were repurposed, which activist Travis McGee argues is the same thing as being closed. “There’s no guarantee kids from the community can get in, and they have to reapply,” said McGee. McGee says the reason given by the school board for the closings—low enrollment—doesn’t fly.

RIGHT WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Who is creating the policies that negatively impact urban education? What are their motivations and core values?

“HISD stripped these schools of critical programs that parents wanted for their kids,” stated McGee. “Parents then sent their kids to the schools with the programs. So really, those schools were not lacking students; they were lacking programs.” Furthering his point, McGee cited the closing of the only African American Montessori school in Texas, Dotson Elementary, due to a lack of enrollment, even though the school had an annual student waiting list that averaged over 200 students. White is adamant that Houston’s educational inequalities could not occur without Black support. “Just look at the data, at who was in office, at the zip codes. Don’t argue with me; argue with the data,” said White. “I challenge any elected official to respond in documented debate to prove this fact incorrect.”

LEFT “Current board policies allow black and white administrators to mask their biases, while using a silent slave code to keep Black parents uninformed and misdirected away from matters that would afford their child a quality education.” Charles X White

Problems and Solutions

WORDS FROM THE PEOPLE Many view HISD’s school closings in Black neighborhoods as part of a larger land-grab, equal in ruthlessness to the stealing of millions of acres of Black-owned farmland post-Slavery. What created this current reality, and what can be done to change it?

CORRUPT POLICIES Charles X White, founder of the People’s Political Action Party and plaintiff responsible for filing a lawsuit against HISD for Civil Rights violations, believes the problems are policy and people related. “The policy that allows this egregious assault to take place is an easy fix, but of the past four different trustees for District II of the school board, not one of them offered a policy fix,” said White. “Policies are the rules that allow malpractice among board members, miseducation for our children, and skewed accountability for all involved.” “Change all the policies connected that allow the [school] board and superintendent to close schools without going to the voters for approval,” asserted White.

EDUCATED VOTERS Travis McGee, the people education champion questions not only elected officials, but also the Houston electorate. “Most voters are neither informed nor engaged, and allow politicians and preachers to tell them what their children need,” shared McGee. ‘If they said it, it must be true.’ If voters continue to be naïve, then elected officials...will continue to do what they want.” McGee believes one solution to business as usual is for Blacks and Latinos to stop voting for bonds. “Since 1998 over $4 billion has been allocated to HISD in bonds, but the schools are not being built. Grimes and Rose (elementary schools) had bond money allocated. They’re now closed. Where is the return on our investment?”

5 KEY MISTAKES OF LOCAL LEADERSHIP

ENDLESS MARCHES VS PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENT How far? Not far! How long? Not long! Since the civil rights bill has passed, why is there NEVER a viable blueprint or comprehensive strategic plan after a protest? Is the perpetual marching merely to redirect the peoples frustrations, rather than to address their simple request to develop competitive academic pathways,in order to build economically fair and self-sustaining communities?

1

2 HAND-PICKED TO CATER TO OPPORTUNITY RATHER THAN THE PEOPLE In order to keep their position and funding, local leaders (seeking endorsement and financing) must ensure they are praised for their service and commitment to the prosperity of various groups, but they have very little measurable impact within their own community.

I

t is impossible to look at the communities that they represent and the level of influence in which they weild and ignore the profound failure of local leadership to create a collaborative task-force for systematic improvement...or at least a plan. With the notion that ones culture, congregation and voting base will understand, local leadership often disappears for retreats or to ‘study the problem’

and return with apologies and discussions of beaurocracy. They spend more on banquet tables and opt for the demolition contract to destroy their former schools rather than supporting todays students. One can only work to ensure their shameful legacy will be clearly documented in history. For now, this guide is a tool to identify traits and help prevent the next generation from following in their footsteps.

LIKE IT IS

What is the Role of Black Leadership? While their children watch, one must ask, ”Have they lost their backbone, sold out their people and set us back centuries? ” Moreover, if this is true, what must we do to make things right?

4

3 BUILDING A DESERT; ONE COMPROMISE AT AT TIME On the back of other’s struggles, they are able to rise. By justifying the closing of schools, lobbying for transportation roadblocks, facilitating land grabs for profit or helping big business oppress local economy, they have been essential to aid the slow erosion of the civic pride and economic independence.

OTHER TRAITS TO LOOK OUT FOR

5 LOOKING BEYOND THE HORIZON Although their position allows them to see the big picture, they are often so consumed with maintaining status, they fail to provide resources to community or provide nurture to the grass-root groups that are healing the deep, ‘self-imposed’ wounds of the people their ‘leadership’ destroys.

FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY, AND STILL NOWHERE TO GO Their actions have allowed them to afford more than most, yet (minus a hideaway) they are relegated to live with the people they treat the worse. Because everyone knows what they do, they are relatively free until they step out of line. Once they are engulfed in public scandal, legal battles or economic ruin, they run back to their people for support, advocacy and help.

BACKROOM MEETINGS & TOP 10% QUEST

Everyone wants to be special and when intoxicated by their new power, many compromise their people for so little. If their greatest desire is crossover, acceptance and to be DuBoise’ 10%, beware; they may be misguided and leading you to an oppresive dead end.

More than pseudo-society pics, look for their legacy. If they have not created sustainable brick-and-morter institutions to employ, intellecually elevate or transforming their constituents and future generations; they may be lost and leading you astray.

The revolution of thought is very seldom televised. If every minimal social issue requires a billboard or press release, yet they are #vapor with critical issues such as school closings, brutality and economics, then be cautious; they may be on payroll and leading you nowhere.

“To this day the government said I never received a penny. So why take my life? Only because I’m a Black man with talent.” (Gibson) RIGHT Prior to leading Riverside, Gibson created Texas Southern University’s School of Allied Health—it’s first accredited program. Sadly, due to the decades of fighting against unwarranted attacks, racially bias and slander, Gibson’s biggest regret—not being able to serve his community as he envisioned and once did.

over other contractors in winning grants for Riverside. “White contractors hate me because I’m successful, talented, and no Uncle Tom,” said Gibson. Gibson’s many accomplishments, including writing first of their kind proposals for brainwave therapy and acupuncture treatment for substance abusers; holding the country’s first Crack Cocaine summit; and securing numerous properties for Riverside, did not stop the 2012 federal investigation where Gibson was taken away at gunpoint in handcuffs, charged with conspiracy to defraud Medicare out of $158 million. Amazingly, Gibson was again found to have stolen zero

dollars, yet he was convicted nonetheless, leading him to believe payback for 1995 was the impetus. That, and the desire to close Riverside for re-gentrification, and claim its holdings estimated by Gibson to be worth $100 million. “Meanwhile, Riverside was in the final running for HMO contracts worth $250 million annually. Imagine what 3rd Ward would look like today had Riverside won those. Certainly, re-gentrification would not have happened,” asserted Gibson. Currently, Gibson awaits a Federal Claims Court ruling on whether his Civil Rights were violated during his legal ordeals. If necessary, he’s prepared to take his case to the Supreme Court and the World Criminal Court.

MY BROTHERS KEEPER On February 27, 2014, President Barack Obama launched “My Brother’s Keeper” (MBK)—a national call to action to close opportunity gaps still faced by far too many young people of color, especially young males. Mayor Annise Parker answered that call for the Bayou City, and entrusted MBK’s efforts to the city’s division, with a long tradition of coordinating dynamic programs—the Houston Health Department.

Leading the MBK charge, Houston Health Department director, Stephen Williams and division manager Noel Pinnock. According to Judy Harris, Williams was selected as MBK leader because of his unparalleled successes with past initiatives, including alleviating much of the city’s homelessness. “The City of Houston established a priority to address chronic homelessness in Houston,” said Judy Harris, Acting Chief of Staff of the Houston Health Department’s Director’s Office. “Stephen Williams has been instrumental in contributing to this goal as former chair of the Houston Homeless Coalition Board and by securing funding to provide services to support permanent supportive housing for the homeless.”

ABOVE For more information on MBK, visit www. mbkhouston.com.

“MBK is necessary because of the challenges faced by Black and Latino communities,” said Pinnock, who mentioned among other things, high drop-out and unemployment rates, and a prison industry that targets minority communities by using illiteracy rates (not reading at grade level by 3rd grade) to choose where to build new cells. “There is significant disparity in outcomes for boys and young

men of color, as opposed to their white counterparts. They are less likely to be insured, they are more likely to be suspended from school, more likely to be arrested and incarcerated, and more likely to be poor,” asserted Harris. Pinnock also highlighted MBK’s ability to provide direction and structure for the many children who go unattended for hours, due to parents working multiple jobs, or those who are part of the city’s large undocumented population. “Undocumented parents don’t often seek services that will help their children be successful in school. As a city we must be responsible for providing resources and programs to help close the academic and achievement gaps that exist,” said Pinnock.

BELOW Since Mayor Parker’s acceptance of the My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge in September 2014, MBK Houston has engaged over 300 individuals in discussions, focus groups, and working sessions.

education or training, successfully entering the workforce, and reducing crime and violence and providing a second chance. These milestones, according to Harris and Pinnock, are part of MBK’s cradleto-college-and-career action plan. Additionally, MBK seeks to change the all-too common narrative that

says, help for Black and Latino youth only comes from persons or sources outside their own communities. “If we give Black and Latino communities the tools available outside those communities, the successes are repeatable,” shared Pinnock. “This movement—

HOW DO WE CREATE HAPPINESS? BY ROCK MUHAMMAD

Do you know what makes you happy? Is your happiness based on material or spiritual things? Is it based on what you do? Or what happens to you? WHAT IS HAPPINESS The word Happiness is defined as a noun which means; a pleasant and contented mental state. So if Happiness is a state of mind, how do we influence that? Research suggests that up to 40% of happiness depends on our habits and activities (GGSC, 2014). Therefore, happiness is the result of mental habits, as well as, the things we do.

T

hese questions, can help us delve into the deeper meaning of our foundation for happiness, but the real question is, what is happiness?

Hip-Hop mogul, Russell Simmons spoke on meditation and illustrated happiness by referencing the initial excitement of a rapper getting a major record deal and buying an expensive car. But after they drove

38 TRÉ MAGAZINE thetremag.com

around the corner- that was it! The excitement would be gone. Why? Because we all have what scientists call a Happiness Set Point or Happiness Baseline (Shapiro, 2014). If you win the lottery, for example, you would have this huge blip of happiness, but a year later you would be back at your happiness baseline (Shapiro, 2014). The same goes for tragedy. You may experience a huge dip, but in time you return to your baseline. (Shapiro, 2014). In 2011, another study that used a Track Your Happiness app allowed people to chart their feelings on a momentby-moment basis. After collecting data from more than 15,000 people in 80 countries, representing a wide range of backgrounds they concluded that when people were mind-wandering, they reported feeling happy only 56% of the time. But when they were focused on the present moment, they reported feeling happy 66% of the time (Killingsworth, 2012).

Source: Shauna Shapiro: Mindfulness Meditation and the Brain Source: Matt Killingsworth/ TEDTalks

This is evidence that supports a fact that was rediscovered over 2,500 years ago; a still mind is conducive to happiness, as it was stated by The Buddha, “There’s nothing so conducive to happiness as a mind that has been tamed” (A.N. 1.31-40). By nature, the mind can only focus on one thing at a time. In all, happiness is the result of our actions, not what we have or do not have. Material things only satisfy us for a short while, because once we have them, we return to our happiness baseline. Therefore, it’s important for us to be mindful of the present and focus on one task at a time through to completion, and avoid allowing our minds to wander. Meditation is a way that can help us achieve a still mind that induces automatic happiness. Find your joy and keep it. If you’re in the Houston area, you are invited to join the group every first Thursday at 7pm for a FREE Meditation class at Sunshine’s Health Food Store located at 4915 Martin Luther Kink Blvd. 77021 or visit relaxnbreathe.net

FAITH BASE 101 Buddhism is a way of finding peace within oneself. It is a religion that helps one find personal happiness and contentment. WHAT IS BUDDHISM At the core of Buddhism is the belief that all ones problems and suffering arise from confused and negative states of mind (anger, jealousy and ignorance), and that all happiness and good fortune arise from peaceful and positive states of mind (love, compassion and wisdom). DAILY GOOD DEEDS Buddhists practice a step by step path to inner peace, kindness, and

wisdom through both their daily practice and by living peacefully and gently without harm to others. They share their experience with others and work towards the ultimate goal of pure and lasting happiness for all living beings. CORE BELIEFS The definite relationship between actions and their effects is known as the ‘law of karma’. An understanding of the law of karma is the basis of Buddhist morality.

MEDITATION Meditation is at the heart of the Buddhist way of life. It is a method for understanding and working on ones own mind.

The Power of Meditation and Prayer

THE SPIRITUAL PATH Having attained enlightenment, one shall have all the necessary qualities – universal love and compassion, omniscient wisdom and boundless spiritual power – to lead all living beings to the same exalted state. This is the ultimate aim of Mahayana Buddhism.

VOCAB WHEEL OF LIFE

TINA TURNER

BUDDHISM comes from ‘budhi’, ‘to awaken’. It has its origins about 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gotama, known as the Buddha, was himself awakened (enlightened) at the age of 35.

TINA TURNER FINDS PEACE AND HER SPIRITUALITY Born Anna Mae Bullock (November 26, 1939), and known by her stage name Tina Turner; she is a globally celebrated, legendary singer, dancer, actress, and author, whose career has spanned more than

half a century. Turner considers herself a “Buddhist-Baptist” and states she still prays in the traditional Baptist sense, while also meditating and chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. Born and raised in the Southeastern United States, she is now a Swiss citizen.

I

t has been widely proven that martial arts is not only incredible exercise, but a powerful esteem and confidence builder, especially for youth. But few are aware of the African origins of many of the martial arts. This fact is something Baba Shango, founder and director of SEHAH, has used to help young and old alike find not only a tool for self-defense, but a vehicle for self-discovery. SEHAH is part of an international collective of practitioners of African-centered martial arts

called Kupigana Ngumi Kusini. Though martial arts is SEHAH’s calling card, the center offers other programs and classes for all members of the family. AT A GLANCE Annually, SEHAH participates and/or organizes four major activities, including a martial arts tournament and summer program. EACH ONE TEACH ONE This summer’s destination is Tanzania (August 7 – 19). But don’t call it a vacation.

Nation building is also central to why Shango views the annual international trips as critical.

“When I choose a destination, it’s part of the Pan African diaspora, and I identify important historical sites that we’ll visit. “At SEHAH, culture is at the center of everything we do,” said Sundiata Shango, Baba’s son and the center’s lead teacher. Along with SEHAH’s four main program offerings, the center also is home to a homeschool, after school program, and “Open Gym,” where members can train or lift weights any day of the week.

DISPELLING MYTHS “People say Africans don’t like us. These trips dispel that myth,” said Shango, alluding to the warm welcome he receives during every trip. “These trips also help build young people’s confidence, and relationships with their cousins across the Atlantic,” added Sundiata.

SEHAH was founded in 1991 by Shango to give more focus to his specialty—youth and martial arts.

SPONSORSHIP & SUPPORT This unique offering is changing lives and giving young people access to a new world, emerging with a global perspective and cultural grounding thanks to SEHAH, which is in the process of raising funds for this year’s trip.

THE FUTURE OF HARD DRIVES WHAT IS A SOLID-STATE HYBRID HARD DRIVE (SSHD)? Solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs) are emerging as the future of mass storage. Combining the blazing speed of flash memory with the low cost of traditional magnetic media, SSHDs provide significant performance improvements that ordinary laptop and desktop users can afford. Unlike a traditional hard drive, which uses spinning magnetic platters, an

SSD drive has no moving parts. And they’re fast. The “problem” with SSD technology is that it’s more expensive per gigabyte than a standard hard drive. So enter the hybrid. Solid-state hybrid drives combine magnetic mass storage with the speed of solid-state memory, plus a little software magic, to strike a beautiful compromise.

8 MISTAKES MADE WHEN PURCHASING A LAPTOP MISTAKE #1 THE MORE RAM THE BETTER- Truth be told, you rarely need more than 4GB of RAM. Of course, there are exceptions MISTAKE #2: THINKING SIZE DOESN’T MATTER Size matters, especially when it comes to a laptop. A laptop’s size often also determines the size of the keyboard and trackpad, meaning you’ll likely be more cramped and tight on space when opting for a laptop measuring less than 13 inches. Whereas a bigger display allows for an expansive viewing experience, it also cuts into the portability factor. MISTAKE #3: NOT TRYING BEFORE BUYING Always ensure to give the laptop you’re considering on buying a proper test before purchasing it. MISTAKE #4: OPTING FOR HIGHEST AVAILABLE RESOLUTION- It’s a good selling point, sure, but consumers often only look at the spec sheet instead of the whole picture. A device boasting a resolution exceeding 1080p is certainly worth more than a cursory glance, but its not always the right choice given may laptops have yet to master properly scaling anything over 200 pixels per inch. Highresolution laptops often yield a smaller picture because operating systems such as Windows render dimensions in pixel size. MISTAKE #5: OVERLOOKING PORT OPTIONS Not all laptops include the ports you depend on. Need a card reader? How about

three USB ports? You might be out of luck. The current ultrabook trend is sending ports into extinction. Standard laptops had three USB ports, an Ethernet, and an audio jack with a variety of other ports. Today many manufactures are offering more streamlined chassis. Consider which ports you need, then go from there. MISTAKE #6: BUYING AN EXTENDED WARRANTY Minus, user damage, it’s highly unlikely new laptops will malfunction during the duration of an extended warranty, and given the cost of most warranties, paying out of pocket in the event of something actually happening might even save you money. There are some exceptions, however, particularly if you’re a frequent flyer and desire theft or damage coverage. MISTAKE #7: COMPROMISING WITH A CONVERTIBLE The tablet convertibles, many of which feature displays that easily detach or fold on top of the keyboard for increased usability. However, devices functioning as both a tablets and a laptops haven’t quite come into their own (yet). The devices can serve both purposes, but they don’t excel in either the way a dedicated device does. What’s more, no hybrid operating system as of yet delivers a terrific user experience, regardless of whether using the device as a laptop or tablet. MISTAKE #8: BUYING THE CHEAPEST AVAILABLE MODEL The cheapest computer may have all the features you need, but chances are, it lacks the longevity you want.

Just think about it, our infrastructure, industry, homes, cars and more would not exist without skilled welders. 48 TRÉ MAGAZINE thetremag.com

n December 22, 2014 the Industrial Welding Academy (IWA) hosted a Welding Merit Badge class for the scouts of Troop 740, Aquila District of the Sam Houston Area Council. Merit badges are a core component of the Boy Scouts of America’s program. The merit badge courses provide scouts with in depth knowledge, and experience, in a variety of subjects including sports, crafts, science, business, trades and careers. There are over 130 different merit badges and one of the most in demand, and most difficult to obtain, is the Welding Merit Badge. With that said, it is easy to understand why the scouts of Troop 740 were excited about the opportunity provided to them by

in the field of welding. These career opportunities are lucrative, plentiful and encompass a broad section of industries. The scouts learned that there are many well paying jobs for welders locally, nationally and internationally. Beginning welders earn around $17/ hr, while highly skilled welder can earn more than $50/hr. Welding can also be a great income source for students working their way through college. Representatives from the American Welding Society (AWS) were also present and shared additional information about the field of welding. The AWS offers scholarships to students pursing

welding certifications. The IWA was founded by Andre Horne and provides a variety of welding certifications and offers several classes scheduled to meet the needs of all potential students. Jackson Cloyd, an Eagle Scout, who has earned over 50 merit badges stated, “This merit badge was the most fun out of all the badges I have earned, including rifle shooting. I want to do more welding.” Thanks to Andre Horn, the Industrial Welding Academy Family, the American Society of Welders, Troop 740, Tré Nation and the Pinnacle Foundation for providing the scouts with this unique opportunity.
