with specific permission from the U.S. While in Cuba, visitors can experience the amazing, food, music, people, culture, and spiritual traditions. One tradition is Santeria which is one of the main religions in Cuba and is usually described as a Cuban religion with African roots. While in Cuba, you may meet people dressed in all white wearing only colorful beaded necklaces this is worn for about a year in order to keep away bad energy (signifies a rebirth and purity).

lizabeth “Queen Bessie” Coleman (January 26, 1892 – April 30, 1926) was raised in Waxahachie, Texas and was the tenth of thirteen children to sharecroppers George and Susan Coleman. At the age of 23, she took her savings and enrolled in the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University where she heard stories from pilots returning home from World War I. With support from black businesses,

Coleman traveled to Paris in 1920 and earned her international aviation license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. Now a celebrity, she returned to the US, and became a “barnstorming” stunt flier in order to make a living. In the face of racism, she was often criticized by U.S. media for her confidence, opportunistic nature and the flamboyant style she brought to her exhibition flying.

On June 15, 1921 Bessie Coleman became the first female pilot of African American or Native decent to hold a pilot license in the U.S.and the first to hold an international pilot license.

At the age of 34, she was thrown from her plane when it unexpectedly went into a dive. It was later discovered that a wrench used to service the engine had slid into the gearbox and jammed it.

Among the many proposed changes are efforts to paint the Confederacy in a positive light, rewrite the Civil Rights era, minimize nonwhite citizens in Texas history, and ignore the economic and horrific atrocities committed by groups like the Ku Klux Clan To speak out against these changes, visit naacp.org and sign the pledge.

WHAT ARE SANCTIONS? Sanction is a penalty levied on another country, or on individual citizens of a country. It is an instrument of foreign and domestic policy and economic pressure that can be described as a sort of carrot-and-stick approach to dealing with international trade and politics.

ECONOMIC SANCTIONS The 1791 Haitian Revolution secured black independence in the former French colony and created a global upheaval for the European slave trade.

Sadly, it also ensured the expansion of U.S. slavery and laid the strategy for modern policies that impact prosperity and black businesses today. The media strategically presents Haiti’s modern struggles as a ‘curse’ and for two centuries Black Haitians have suffered scorn and punishment from western nations for creating the most

successful slave rebellion in world history and taking back their own independence. The notion that the United States uses economic and financial sanctions more than any other country and held embargoes against Haiti (from 1806 to 2003) may shed light on negro struggles and policies that continue to block prosperity for Black Americans. Sanctions take many forms, here are some key attributes:

TARGETED SANCTIONS While the goals of sanctions are to force a group to alter its behavior, there is much variation. Sanctions can target a country as a whole, industries, groups or even individuals. ATTACKING KEY INDIVIDUALS, such as political figures or business leaders. This type of sanction is designed

to cause financial difficulties for a small, isolated set of individuals. A MILITARY ALTERNATIVE Economics and trade are rarely the sole strategy. When faced with strategic and unified groups, a government may react to political problems with military force:

BELOW A country has a number of different types of sanctions at its disposal. While some are more widely used than others, the general goal of each is to force a change in behavior.

DOMESTIC FORCE Sanctions may be enacted for several reasons, such as a retaliatory measure for another groupsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; economic activities. Research shows the severity of the negative impact on the target group increases if they are isolated from global resources and allies.

International organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) seek to review sanction disputes and countries.

STRATEGIC LOSS Because the target group is unable to purchase goods, sanctions can increase costs to consumers and businesses, resulting in production loss and economic loss through unemployment. The issuing country will not only reduce the choice of goods and services that domestic consumers have, they often increase the cost of doing business for those sanctioned communities.

4 MARGINAL UTILITY The additional satisfaction a consumer gains from consuming one more unit of a good or service. Marginal utility is an important economic concept because economists use it to set prices and determine how much of an item a consumer will buy.

3 EQUILIBRIUM PRICE An equilibrium price is the culmination of the laws of supply and demand working in tandem. It’s a system of checks and balances. Suppliers are limited in their maximum price, as raising prices too high will decrease demand. Consumers are forced to pay slightly more than they’d like, as pushing prices down would decrease supply. Free markets naturally gravitate towards the equilibrium.

5 INFLATION Inflation is defined as the rate at which prices of goods and services rise, and consequently the rate at which currency devalues. Inflation is a sustained increase in the general price level of goods and services in an economy over a period of time resulting in a loss of value of currency. When the price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services. Consequently, inflation reflects a reduction in the purchasing power per unit of money.

The Five Things Everyone Should Know About Economics 1 LAW OF SUPPLY This law states that as quantity supplied increases, so does price. This happens for two reasons. When suppliers increase production, the additional resources needed cost more, and that cost is passed on to the consumer. Or, when customers start offering a high price on a good or service, suppliers are more willing to sell. 2 LAW OF DEMAND States that as price rises, demands falls. Consumers will limit spending on goods nonessential to life, saving capital for more important purchases.

As she walked into the room, you could immediately feel her presence fill the room. “They would say that the only way you fail is if you simply just don’t try. If you learn something, then that is not failing, that is success.” As she spoke these words, her face lit up. Her father, the one who had taught her to always look for the successes in life, is Mayor Sylvester Turner. Ashley P. Turner grew up on the north side of town, and after leaving for college to

receive a B.S. in Science and Biology from University of Texas at San Antonio and then a M.S. in Healthcare Administration from Texas Women’s University, returned to advocate and promote health care for those who need it as well as for the community as a whole. The realization that I was going to get to interview Houston’s First Daughter, Ashley P. Turner, did not sink in and actually hit me until after Asia Youngs Bailey and I arrived at City Hall. We checked in, found our mentor thetremag.com

and teacher, Editor of Tré magazine Stephanie Coleman, and headed out to the HTV media center. The interview suddenly felt very real when I actually saw Ms. Turner, sitting in the chair prepping for the camera. Asia and I headed to the interview room to prepare. We practiced and rehearsed the questions until we felt comfortable. But all my confidence went out of the room as soon as she entered. She walked with grace and joy radiating with every step she took closer. Her compassion was immediately shown as she asked us a few questions to get to know us

“Nothing is given to us. Nothing comes easy and don’t be afraid of failures,” Ms. Turner said. “Don’t be afraid to do the work to achieve your goals and allow others to help you. As a millennial, find a mentor or talk to an elder. Generations before us have seen things we have not seen because we have not been here long enough on the earth to experience it.” Ms. Turner was adamant about the importance of teamwork and the compassion that millennials have. “Be someone that is always open to life experiences, open to learning, open to understanding,”

Ms. Turner said. “That makes you kinder and more compassionate. Channeling that bold, courageous nature, and marry it with learning how to work with others.”

When asked about social media, Ms. Turner described the three personalities she shared online, to promote hard work and positivity. Having multiple social media platforms keep the First Daughter only a click away from millennials, who can follow her life, her examples and her successes. “I am part of three different platforms,” Ms. Turner said. “There is Ashley Turner, who is just the personality, the regular person. There is Ashley Turner who operates a federally qualified health center. And then there is Ashley Turner who is the First Daughter of Houston. So the question I always have to answer is which one am I going to be today? I

try to do things that promote positivity. You want to engage in social media and be relatable in a way that is responsible and very smart.” Ms. Turner doesn’t shy away from being her own person. The First Daughter of Houston kindly shares where Houstonians can contact her and welcomes millennials to reach out to her. Ms. Turner will always personally respond.

Ms. Turner loves Houston as well as the people that are at the heart of its success. To be paid for transporting people and property, pilots need to obtain a commercial license. Students should reference the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARS) for specific requirements.

Employers preferred pilots with several years of flight experience and various pilot licenses. Most airline pilots hold a bachelor’s degree and some programs have 2- to 4-year aviation programs.

STEP 5: ADVANCE IN THE FIELD Regarding promotion, airline pilots follow a ranking system, much like that of officers in the army, that requires pilots to gain years of experience in order to advance. Entry level pilots must have up to 5 years of experience before qualifying for an advancement position as a first officer, etc.

A HANDS-ON FLIGHT EXPERIENCE!

Next, students enter the HANGAR, which replicates a general aviation hangar, complete with an actual Mooney M20 light aircraft. An instructor guides them through planning and navigating, even â&#x20AC;&#x153;filingâ&#x20AC;? an FAA flight plan. After completing their plan, students make sure the aircraft is ready to fly. Action goes into high gear in the SIMULATOR BAY when students settle into their own M20 simulators. Students start in the LEARNING LABORATORY, where they learn aviation concepts in a real ground-school environment. The lab includes ten interactive, computer-based workstations dedicated to different aviation topics, each including hands-on investigations and data collection. Next, students enter the HANGAR, which replicates a general aviation hangar, complete with an actual Mooney M20 light aircraft. An instructor guides them through planning and navigating, even â&#x20AC;&#x153;filingâ&#x20AC;? an FAA flight plan. After completing their plan, students make sure the aircraft is ready to fly. Action goes into high gear in the SIMULATOR BAY when students settle into their own M20 simulators. ORAL HISTORY GREGORY SCHOOL welcomes firsthand experiences from individuals who have impacted the community or have unique insights into Houston’s history. Oral histories help preserve meaningful stories, folklore, skills, and cultural practices. Our oral histories are used in research projects by students, professors, and casual history lovers. BLACK AND WHITE IN BLACK AND WHITE: IMAGES OF DIGNITY, HOPE, AND DIVERSITY IN AMERICA. The exhibit features striking photographs attributed to African American photographer John Johnson between 1910 and 1925. Michèle Gates Moresi, curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, underscores the importance of Johnson’s work:“They speak to a time and a place where African Americans were treated as second-class citizens but lived their

lives with dignity...You can read about it and hear people talk about it, but to actually see the images is something entirely different.” Take a moment to experience and support Black and White in Black and White: Images of Dignity, Hope, and Diversity in America which is curated by Douglas Keister, traveled by Exhibit Envoy, and presented with support from California State University, Chico. On view until March 25, 2017.

UPCOMING EXHIBITS WANDERING SPIRIT: AFRICAN WAX PRINTS This exhibition is a tribute to the century-old handmade designs and patterns on textiles that originated in Indonesia, were copied and industrialized by Europeans and exported to Africa. The exhibit traces the developmental pathway of the African wax print and tells how these fabrics reflect the stories, dreams, and personalities of the people who wear them. The exhibition opens May 15, 2017 at the Gregory Library.

COLOMBO DUSTED SALMON Marvin Woods blends spices unique to Northern Africa, the Caribbean, South America and the Low Country to add new excitement to familiar foods. Serves 4 4 tb canola oil ¼ cup cumin seeds 2 tb coriander seeds 1 tb yellow mustard 1 tb whole cloves 1 tb red pepper flakes 5 tb ground turmeric 2 tb cinnamon 2 tb ground ginger 2 tb garam masala 1 ½ tp celery seeds ½ cup unsalted sunflower seeds 4 salmon portions (8 oz pcs)

Mix spice mixture together. Dredge salmon in spice mixture. Place oil in sauté pan over medium heat. Place salmon in pan spice side down and cook for 3 to 5 minutes (depending on the thickness of the fish). Turn fish over and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes. Serve.
