f we are not open to give, then we are not open to receive. We cannot get through this world alone and as I look at the unwavering love for community by leaders such as John Guess (and staff) of the Houston Museum of African Culture and those individuals that are building and hopeful regardless of reward or acknowledgement, I am encouraged. When I experience the unrestrained openess that shines from individuals such as Irene Greaves, founder of Lovescapingtm, it reminds me that Hope is not naive. As members of a local village, we truly can have a positive impact and drive global change. But, even optimistic visionaries can’t run the race alone. HMAAC and groups that carry the torch for future generations need our committment, presence, loyalty and sustained support. We CAN rise beyond struggle. Let us laugh often and commit to be honest to self, forgive without pause, love without apology, share without restraint and walk in Truth in order to live without regret. Together, we will heal and stand unified in support of the simple daily joys; to live and love, to dream and do. With Warmth and Heartfelt Adoration,

AMERICA WINS!

U.N. PANEL URGES REPARATIONS Government supported lynching was racial terrorism and a legacy of inequality that the U.S. must address.

Peace through strength is at the center of the Trump foreign policy.

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS COMMITTED to a foreign policy focused on U.S. interests and national security. Although, Trump reportedly received four student deferments from the Vietnam draft, as POTUS peace through military strength will be at the center of his foreign policy in order to make possible a stable, more peaceful world with less conflict and more common ground. www.whitehouse.gov/ america-first-foreign-policy.

THE LEGACY OF SLAVERY IN THE U.S. justifies reparations for African Americans, argues a recent report by a U.N.-affiliated group based in Geneva. A study by the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, which reports to the High Commissioner on Human Rights pointed to the continuing link between

present injustices and the dark chapters of American history. “In particular, the legacy of colonial history, enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism and racial inequality in the United States remains a serious challenge, as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent,” the report stated. “Contemporary police killings and the trauma that they create are reminiscent of the past racial terror of lynching.”

PERSPECTIVE Equity in education is deemed unconstitutional as Trump considers cutting key federal funding source for historically black colleges. IF EDUCATION MATTERS, WHY ARE THE LEARNT SO QUIET? The trouble with integration is that many black ’leaders’ are grateful to simply be in a room, rather than getting in the room to make a difference. Kellyanne Conway’s feet on the couch during Trump’s meeting with HBCU leaders and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s view that HBCU’s were “real pioneers” of school choice rather than institutions rooted in racism and segregation are just the beginning. Your black officials have remained passively silent after a signing statement for the government spending bill where Trump hinted that he may cancel a 25-year-old federal initiative aiding historically marginalized students and HBCU’s, arguing it as something that allocates “benefits on the basis of race, ethnicity, and gender.” Ask your leaders where they stand on this issue and (minus taking pictures) what are they going to do now. #lostlegacy #respectthestruggle

DID YOU KNOW A Gallop-Purdue study reports 51 percent of black HBCU graduates reported “thriving in financial well-being,” versus 29 percent of black graduates who did not attend an HBCU.

HBCUs don’t simply exist to educate; but also to better the station of African Americans “Don’t set out merely to do a good Negro job... Set out to do a good job and do that job so well that nobody can do it any better.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. April 26, 1967 WHO SUFFERS WHEN HBCU’S FAIL IN THEIR MISSION? Even if students may arrive less prepared, HBCU students are no less capable. In 2014, then POTUS Obama criticized the four-year graduation rate at all HBCUs which is only about 20 percent. Obama warned that these troubled HBCUs are not too black to fail, noteing, in an already tight budgetary environment, a president should ensure federal funds are funneled to the best black schools that produce the best outcomes. He continued, any college, let alone an HBCU, that perpetually fails black students, the federal government needs to side with the best interest of the students, not simply the historic legacy of the institution. #itscomplicated, #raisethebar

By the 1960s, many of us believed that the Civil Rights Movement could eliminate racism in America during our lifetime. But despite significant progress, racism remains.” —Bill Cosby

A LEGACY THAT WILL STAND… BY: DR. MYRON E. CLOYD When I was a kid in the mid 1960’s Gunsmoke, the Beverly Hillbillies, the Man from Uncle, and the Dick Van Dyke Show, were some of the television shows that were popular. Homes across America were filled with faces that became so familiar kids (and adults) would often internalize their narratives. I can remember going outside to play “cowboys and Indians” after watching a western or “cops and robbers” after watch an episode of Dragnet. In my opinion these examples illustrate the power of television.

HARDWORK

In 1965 William Henry Cosby, Jr. was the co-star of “I-Spy.” Up to that point there had not been a African-American man with a lead role on dramatic television show. You had “Amos & Andy” and Roscoe on the “Jack Benny Show,” but those portrayals were stereotypes and caricatures that reinforced a negative self concept for African-American viewers and reinforced the dominate, racist world view of white supremacist ideology. Bill Cosby’s portrayal was not only a first but the character he portrayed was cool, thetremag.com

For over 30 years (From 1965 until the mid 1990’s) Bill Cosby was a fixture on television. His shows, I Spy (196568), The Bill Cosby Show (1969-72), Fat Albert (1972-84), The Cosby Show (198492), A Different World (1987-93) were all ground breaking and helped reshape perceptions of Black

people. They also help Black folks alter their trajectory. One example is the fact that Black student enrollment at colleges and universities was at its highest during the years the Cosby Show and A Different World aired. Television is an influential medium in large part because narratives and characters from shows, and advertising, are with us on a regular and frequent basis. That’s the reason we know the jingles for certain products that are advertised on television. Likewise, we can internalize the characters and narratives from television shows.

Cosby was intentional about infusing issues of education and empowerment into the narratives of his shows. He even hired Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Alvin Poussaint to make sure that scripts and character portrayals were positive, (something that did not occur to Norman Lear). The shows that Cosby developed brought positive images of Black people (and the community) to the nation at large. His vast body of work blazed a wide and clear path for those who followed him. Without Bill Cosby there would have been no Bernie Mac Show, Steve Harvey Show, D.L. Hughley Show,

Jamie Foxx Show… No Girlfriends, etc., etc., etc. Regardless of his guilt or innocence in the pending legal action against him, Bill Cosby’s pioneering contributions to the empowerment of the African-American community cannot be denied or erased and his legacy will last. My very favorite Cosby show was a 1968 news special he narrated for CBS. I remember watching it when it first aired. It’s relevance and impact are significant. It is aptly titled “Black History, Lost, Stolen or Strayed.” (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=gqHaZ9uWUi4).

One of Dr. Bill Cosby’s greatest contribution to the Black community was his creation of the popular 1980s television sitcom ‘A Different World.’ From the debut of The Cosby Show in 1984 until the end of A Different World in 1993, American higher education grew by 16.8 percent. During the same time period, HBCUs grew by 24.3 percent.

Fridays 12pm-2pm kpft.org

This spike in enrollment at HBCUs isn’t a coincidence, as Cosby’s show brought the HBCU experience into the mainstream and presented them in very positive ways on a regular basis. Cosby, who along with his wife Camille, donated $20 million to Spelman College, was intentional with the message that he wanted to send, consciously hiring an all-Black cast and Black writers to craft the scripts. Educatated at Jack Yates High School, Houston born Actress and choreographer Debbie Allen — who graduated from Howard University along with her sister Phylicia Rashad, were instrumental in the shows development. The show celebrated the day-to-day life experiences and activities of black college life both inside and outside of the classroom and as the years pass and the show is shown less on the television screen there has been a steady decline of HBCU enrollment. Now, only 9 to 11 percent of Black students attend them . #MustIComment? thetremag.com

THE REAL+ BILL

Less than 60 years ago, government enforced Jim Crow Laws legally denied blacks schooling, employment, housing, voting rights and dignity. By contrast, (and without apology), Cosby’s narratives were disruptive, provided dignity, unraveled racist stereotypes in the media, uplifted the spirit and finally provided humanity to the portrayal of the African American experience.

LET’S TALK: YOUNG, SEXY, RICH & BLACK Yet, the current presidential election proves that still waters run deep with regards to race. In short, something just ‘taint right and it’s reported that 21st Century Fox jut incurred $45 million in costs in 9 months for litigation related to silencing harassment allegations in defense of Bill O’Reilly. From President Woodrow Wilson in The Birth Of A Nation (1915) to Reagan’s War On Drugs campaign, America’s usage of propaganda, race shameing and media to drive racial fear is not new. The truth is, the U.S. legal system is unapolgetically bias and broken. Often, truth and justice are not on trial, rather the moral character and underlying agenda of those with power. In the case of judicial fairness, Blacks are left to wonder “Who in the media has an axe to grind with Cosby and why?” #questioneverything #trustnoone #circus #knowyourplace #Django

enemy of the Negro race in America and in the world....” In 1919, George Tyler pulled a .38-caliber revolver and shot Garvey, claiming Asst. District Attorney (NY) Edwin P. Kilroe “had sent him”. Sadly, while in police custody, Tyler leaped from the third floor of the Harlem jail and committed suicide.

MARCUS GARVEY A successful and prolific entrepreneur, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1919, which represents the largest mass movement in African-American history. FINALLY, A HOME Inspired to establish a school in Jamaica modeled after Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute, Garvey looking to raise funds, moved to NYC where he was influenced by Hubert Harrison and began his quest to develop programs to improve the conditions of ethnic Africans “at home and abroad”. With a black nationalist “Back to Africa” message, Garvey and the UNIA established 700 branches in thirty-eight states by the early 1920s. Although, UNIA kept

coded records to protect their members, its International Convention filled Madison Square Garden, brought over 50,000 people and at its peak, they had 65,000 to 75,000 members paying dues.

A THREAT TO THE STATUS QUO NEGRO In 1922, Black leaders petitioned for U.S. Attorney General Daugherty to have Garvey incarcerated and W. E. B. Du Bois feared that Garvey threatened the gains made by his own movement, stating that “Marcus Garvey is, without doubt, the most dangerous

BELOW

On June 15, 1921 Promoted by the UNIA as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam to the Rastafari movement (some sects of which proclaim Garvey as a prophet.) In 1914, Garvey returned to Jamaica, where he organized the Universal Negro Improvement Association stating, “Such a name I thought would embrace the purpose of all black humanity.” Thus to the world a name was born, a movement created, and a man became known.

BRINGING THE ‘HEAT’ Unable to infiltrate the UNIA, the BOI (now the FBI) hired its first five Negro agents and Garvey was jailed, charge with mail fraud for a mislabeled boat picture on his brochure. Garvey met with the KKK and aligned with white segregationist Earnest Sevier Cox to “repatriate” Negros to Africa. June 1938, the Greater Liberia Act was presented to Congress and an amendment to the federal work-relief bill proposing to deport 12 million black Americans to Liberia at federal expense to relieve unemployment. As is common practice with many black liberators, the media ran a campaign to discredit his legacy and sadly, he suffered two strokes after reading a fake news obituary of his death. Garvey died of a broken spirit in London at the age of 52. thetremag.com

It is always time to have the talk. Worried about how your new or existing partner is going to react? You’re not alone, many couples have those fears. DON’T FORCE IT. Find the right time and place to have a conversation. You can schedule a time to talk or be spontaneous in a setting where you are both comfortable. TRY SCHEDULING regular check-ins, or ‘talkiversaries.’ The key to a healthy relationship is having an open dialogue throughout the relationship. It can be hard to find the right time to bring these things up. If you agree to schedule them in advance, no one has to wonder about the timing of the conversations. A talk doesn’t have to be face-to-face. If you talk, type, or text what is important is that you start the conversation about HIV.

Now, check out the conversation starters and the role PrEP can play in your overall sexual health.

WHAT IS PREP? PrEP, short for preexposure prophylaxis, is a safe and effective way to prevent HIV infection. PrEP only works if you are HIV negative! HOW DOES PREP WORK? PrEP works by following four simple steps: 1 GETTING TESTED 2 TAKING ONE PILL

each day to keep HIV from reproducing in your body 3 USING CONDOMS always 4 TAKING CHARGE of

your sexual health to stay HIV negative PrEP is a piece of the puzzle and part of your HIV prevention toolkit that includes knowing your status and being aware of your sexual health.

can be the perfect foreplay.

Conversation Starter #1: “Before we take things to the next level, I think we should get tested for HIV. No matter the results, at least we’ll know how to keep each other safe and healthy.”

Conversation Starter #2: “If we’re going to have sex, we should use condoms.”

Conversation Starter #3: “I really like you, and like where this is going, but before we go any further, there’s something I want to tell you. I’m HIV-positive.”

Conversation Starter #4: “I got tested for HIV and other stuff the first time about a year ago, have you ever been tested?”

Conversation Starter #5: “Can we talk about sex? Safer sex is really important to me. “

Conversation Starter #6: “You should know that for anal sex, condoms are non-negotiable for me. Are you ok with that?”

Conversation Starter #7: “So we haven’t really talked about it, but can we agree that when the time comes, we’ll use condoms to keep each other safe?”

LOVE IS NOT ALWAYS ENOUGH

It’s important to have serious conversations about finances and the levels of need for the long-term care for your parent or loved one.

5110 MLK BLVD, HOUSTON 77021 (713) 747-0271

SEHAH.ORG

The number of people caring for an elderly parent is on the rise. Deborah Jones, a native Houstonian is the primary caretaker for her 83-year-old mother, Theola McQueen Judora. She commutes weekly from her home in the South Side of Houston to a nursing home in Richmond, Texas. Diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer’s, her mom is stable and able to respond to some familiar questions, but Jones recalls, “At that time (2006), I had no point of reference. It was a mental struggle for me to understand the psychiatric disorder indicative of mental illness.” Although tube-fed, bed ridden and solely dependent on others for

her daily care, her mom still responds to pain, smiles, laughs, sings, recognizes familiar faces or voices and at moments, even dances in her jerri chair. It is very difficult to watch mom who is unaware of life, but Jones states, “Visiting is a must to assure mom and uplift her spirit and let her know that I love her dearly.” Inspired by her mom’s favorite quote ”Just Keep Living”, Jones is continuing the journey, but states she can’t do it alone, and thanks Cynthia Wooten and the caring staff at Richmond Health Care Center. “Had I known in 2006, that it was an early sign, I might have responded different” states Jones and recommends caregivers 1) check on loved ones often 2) listen and be aware of behavioral changes as it may be a sign diminishing mental or physical care. 3) take care of yourself too. thetremag.com

It is stated that “my people perish for lack of knowledge.” In this growing economic environment, there is no excuse to be left behind. The AMAC 2017 National Business Diversity Conference is well crafted and brings aviation executives, prime contractors, sub-contractors and key stakeholders together with the purpose of developing business relationships. It is important to have continued dialogue in areas of diversity and inclusion. As stated in the mission of AMAC, Houston Airports also promotes the inclusion of minorities and women in employment and contracting opportunities throughout the aviation industry. In 2016, approximately 11.5 million of those passengers were international travelers. In the midst of a 10year, $4 billion capital improvement program, the sheer number of opportunities for participation in

projects in Houston is impressive. Foremost is the International Terminal Redevelopment Project. The planned $1.5 billion expansion of the Mickey Leland International Terminal at Bush Airport is scheduled to begin before the end of 2017 and will consist of the demolition of United’s old terminal building and the construction of a new 780,000-square-foot terminal, also known as Terminal D. The focus on ensuring DBE participation during this period of substantial growth has been vital. With an overall goal of 29 percent participation, the airport system’s OBO program strives to meet and exceed that number for airport improvement projects.

Although the City of Houston has worked diligently to create an environment that removes barriers, ensures nondiscrimination, and provides the tools necessary to compete successfully, you still must do your part. Businesses can only be part of the process, if they know the rules or take the steps to be qualified, certified, and eligible for consideration. For small entrepreneurs, it can seem like a long and daunting task, but the AMAC Conference is an opportunity to take your first step. The Houston Airport System has a history

Each year, AMAC volunteers host students at the annual conference for a full day of presentations and activities designed to introduce them to the wide variety of careers open to diverse students. WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?: AN AMAZING WAY TO DEAL WITH CHANGE IN YOUR WORK AND IN YOUR LIFE A timeless classic, Who Moved My Cheese? uses a simple parable to reveal profound truths about dealing with change so that you can enjoy less stress and more success in your work and in your life. Most people are fearful of change, both personal and professional, because they don’t have any control over how or when it happens to them. Since change happens either to the individual or by the individual, Dr. Spencer Johnson, the co-author of the multi-million bestseller The One Minute Manager, uses a deceptively simple story to show that when it comes to living in a rapidly changing world, what matters most is your attitude. Exploring a simple way to take the fear and anxiety out of managing the future, Who Moved My Cheese? can help you discover how to anticipate, acknowledge, and accept change in order to have a positive impact on your job, your relationships, and every aspect of your life.

PEACE THROUGH RESISTENCE BY CATHERINE WHITE-SWAN

As a boy, Duane Bradley’s love for radio was cultivated out of the love and times shared with his grandfather, sitting together listening to baseball games on the radio. JOURNALISM DONE RIGHT Now, recently retired General Manager of Pacifica Radio, KPFT-FM 90.1, Bradley for the past 15+ years helped guide the station through many challenging times and brought the community back inside and onthe-air. Being one of only 5 Pacifica Radio network stations in the country, it is non-commercial, listener-sponsored community radio; a station for the people, by the people.

As a Catholic, Bradley felt a renewed deepening of his faith and the teachings of the Gospels through his ongoing studies toward a masters degree in Faith and Culture at the University of St. Thomas, as well as the support and importance of family, church and community in his life. The call through his faith to be a peacemaker, to work for social

BELOW Bradley is committed to the youth and encourages students to master their craft as well as promote and preserve the history of their own unique cultural experience. This year he has lead Tre interns to develop Black History Month 365 (BHM365!), daily fact recorded by students that celebrate black history heroes everyday.

justice and to strive to build bridges rather than walls is at the heart of his life and work; to always strive to make a positive difference, with a purpose always toward peace. He has been a voice of inspiration to many over the years and a presence in the community. Currently, he is continuing to volunteer as co-host and producer with the Open Journal team, heard weekday mornings from 8-9 a.m. on KPFT.

MOVING FORWARD Intentionally, Bradley is planning on media work, consulting, writing, teaching, speaking - and listening - remaining open to the still, small voice of Spirit; and working consciously toward peace - internally, in our communities, and in our world.

FREESPEECH IS NOT ALWAYS FREE... There is a price and great debt paid my many to ensure freedom in the U.S. KPFT’s transmitter was bombed and destroyed two months after going on the air. Five months later, October 6, 1970, while broadcasting Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant,” the transmitter was bombed again and took KPFT off the air for three months.

There was no effort by FBI or local police at the time so, Pacifica mounted a media campaign to create pressure, leading to the arrest and 1971 conviction of KKK member, Jimmy Dale Hutto; charged with KPFT bombings, as well as plotting to blow up radio stations KPFA and KPFK.

DOMESTIC TERRORISM KPFT stands in spite of an array of attacks for being a progressive and radical institutions in Houston which is committed to truth and community including bullet fire through its window, severed power lines, and aggressive threats. DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY Detroit has always been a place of new beginnings, innovation and trailblazing. It is a city open to new things while treasuring its history. Symbols of beginnings, transitions, endings and entrances into new worlds and places, doors are the perfect medium to tell the Detroit story; its past, its present and it future.

D

oor of Opportunity is a traveling exhibition of visual art, film and online performances displaying the creativity and opportunities in Detroit for artists. What makes this exhibit unique is the visual art in this exhibition is actual doors transformed into art. Participants range from students to seniors, emerging artists, and seasoned artists - all Metro Detroit residents. This is not a competition or juried show. It is open to all MetroDetroiters who want to create.

Donna Jackson, founder of DMJ Studios and creative visionary that is driving the initiative states, “We are in our first years, but the vision is clear; to grow Door of Opportunity into a project that continually tours around the city bringing more art to communities. We also will work diligently to permanently install doors in Metro-Detroit

neighborhoods and communities. These doors will be visual symbols of the opportunity that exist in Detroit for all Detroit residents. All doors and the stories of the artists who create them will be available online increasing awareness of the talent in Detroit beyond Detroit’s borders. The resources will be used to purchase materials to build portable displays for the doors, to purchase more doors to add to the collection and to purchase art supplies for participants to use. Lastly, the funds will be used to increase awareness of the project. This project will give more Detroit artists a platform to share their art. It will bring more art to more of our neighborhoods. It provides opportunities for new artists and art enthusiasts to create and have fun while doing it.
