Teamwork makes the dream work! With every new year, new eighth graders and seventh graders take their chance in trying out for the AMS boys' tennis team. This year, a total of 8 seventhgraders and 13 eighth-graders made the team. Practicing hard every day of the week, the Trojan team led an undefeated victory for the season. As a team, victories are always celebrated. When asked what their favorite part of being on the AMS tennis team was, Blake Swindler, 7 said, "Getting to play tennis with my friends." Agreeing, Clark Young, 7 said, "Making new friends and getting better at tennis." "Playing Tennis," stated Brody Fields, 8. "The end of the year party," stated Eli Coleman, 8. Overall, the boys' tennis team brought victory once again to AMS.

BREAKING

Records

"I was overjoyed. I was so surprised. I kinda expected it; I looked up at the board and I knew that I broke the record for the 800M. Ms. Johnson was telling me that I didn't break the record, but I knew I did. It was a misunderstanding," said Samatha Siegrist, 7. Maddy Wallace, 8 said, "I was very surprised and happy." After breaking the medley record, Wallace added, "I was extremely happy and ran to my teammates. We all hugged." "I was just happy that I could beat it by so much," explained Gatlin Tilson, 8 when reflecting on breaking the long jump record. This season, all track participants did outstanding, and although records are hard to break, multiple students exceeded and broke a record or two.

ONE DREAM

Setting the bar, AMS track participants took part in multiple events ranging from jumping the longest distance to jumping the highest jump. Running, sprinting, and throwing, are the challenging events that the AMS track teams participated in to bring victory to AMS at each meeting. Along with first-place wins, multiple school records were shattered. In the long jump for eighth-grade boys, Gatlin Tilson jumped a total of 21 feet, setting a new record for the school. Later on, he broke his own record with a total of 74 feet (6'2"). In addition to the new record, Maddy Wallace, 8, broke a record in the eighth-grade girl's 2-mile run with a time of 12 minutes and 39 seconds and a 3200 record. Not only did Wallace shatter the distance record, but she also assisted in the 8th Grade Girls Medley Relay. The team, Mae Fetters, Taylor Hannah, Kelsey Anderson, and Maddy Wallace, broke the record with a time of 4.47.00s. As well as the two seventh-grade wins, Samantha Siegrist, a seventhgrader running the 800M, took home a new record for the school; her total time was 2:27. As a team, the seventh girls' 4x400M relay including, Siegrist along with Brecken Bogner, Cole Torgerson, and Katie Robert broke the school record with a time of 4:30.29, winning them first place. With a breathtaking race, Robert also broke the 400M record with a time of 1.03.63. 2022 was the year for these outstanding students to perform their best, bringing them pride in their victory. The AMS track teams brought multiple first-place wins to AMS during this year's season. 3

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

WILL you RATHER play singles or doubles? Will Rather, 7, prefers singles ever since he started playing at eight years old. He explained, "My mom made me go to a lesson, and I loved it." Rather now plays with the Wilson Ultra 100 Countervail racket and favors his forehand over his backhand. His favorite game is Rip Your Face Off; you rotate hitting the ball, and when you miss, you have to sit at the net and attempt to volley the ball back. Although it's all fun in games, Rather and his partner placed 1st in the Maize Invitational and had 20:2, overall, wins to loss ratio. He added, "I want to represent my school, and my family loves watching me play."

Winners never quit, and quitters never win. The Andover Boys Tennis team never stopped, placing 1st in League and the WSL Tournament. Overall, all the players had a larger win ratio than their losses. Some didn't lose any matches, walking off the court with a winning score of 6-0. Clark Young, 7 had a record of 8:2 playing in the WSL Tournament and meets. With a win to loss ratio of 1:0, Jack Powell, 8 competed in all the meets. Tyson Ross, 7 had a 8:0 record throughout the whole season.

"Playing both up in doubles," explained Benjamin Reynolds, 8. Blake Swindler, 7 explained, "Don't beat yourself up or be mad at yourself," "Listen to Mr. Fox. One time we were down 2-0 and Mr. Fox came over and gave a motivation speech and we won," explained Eli Coleman, 8. Brady Zynda, 8 said, "Practice a lot," Henrik Villanueva, 7 shared, "Don't be in no-mans-land," "Keep a good, positive, mentality," Brody Field, 8 said. Colin Nguyen, 7 advised, "Be consistent",

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING Even though the players might be alone on the court, the team unity did not cease during singles. Teammates supported and cheered each other on from the sides. Players shared what the best piece of advice they received from their peers was. Colin Alexander, 7 stated, "Don't beat yourself up over mistakes." "Practice like you would play in a match," is the best piece of advice Will Rather, 7 received during the tennis season. Tyler Wertenberger, 8 said, "Mr. Garrison told me to buy a new racket." For Clark Young, 7, he liked to remind himself of the quote by Nelson Mandela which says, "It always seems impossible until it's done." Blake Swindler, 7 simply said, "Not to lose." "MTXE," is what Landon Hale, 8 says, which stands for mental toughness and extra effort. He explains that Coach Garrison promoted this motto to his players. Baul Lee, 8 said, "Stay focused 100% of the time."

DOUBLE TROUBLE Teamwork makes the dream work! Working with someone 5 days a week for 2 months really helps you get to know them. Doubles players grew together, bonded, and taught their rivals an important lesson everywhere they went. In the Maize Invitational, all doubles teams competed for first and knocked their opponents off their feet. Walker McClellan, 8, and Zack Pai, 8 placed battled against Maize South, with the final score being 8-6. Baul Lee, 8, and Griffin Baker, 8 fought also against Maize South, winning 8-2. The only seventh-grade doubles team, Colin Alexander and Will Rather, didn't let down, winning an intense battle against Valley Center.

Ending a week full of tennis with fun games is a must! There are many activities the boys' tennis players love to play every week. Some of the favorite games are Hat-Trick, War, and Rip Your Face Off. These competitions all feature a competitive drive to win. "My favorite part about Fun Friday is the fun games we play," shared Hobbs Hutchinson, 8. With a majority win for the most popular Fun Friday game, "War" won. "You split the team in half and everyone has three lives. If you miss a shot or hit a shot out, you lose a life. Once you have lost all of your lives you are out. CAN YOU GO?

DETERMINED TO GO THE DISTANCE Distance running takes a specific kind of conditioning that pushes the human body to its limit, certain people could find this difficult or discouraging. At practice, distance runners have different training than sprinters. This includes running longer distances, and sometimes running the redbud trail. Meets for distance runners are also a different experience than for sprinters. At meets, distance runners' events are spread out, and their relay is at the very end of the meet, meaning that sometimes they have to stay later than their teammates at the meet. 1. As far as he can. "I felt good during the race, and after I felt very tired," Aidan Braun said. While making his way towards the end of the 3200-meter run, Braun put himself in 1st place winning 10 points for the 8th Grade AMS Boys Team. Photo by June Schmidt

Every jump starts with a few small steps. 8th grader, Gatlin Tilson, took his steps to a new record, jumping 21 ft. "My biggest focus and hardest part of each jump is getting my steps right," said Tilson. "I felt amazing and proud after breaking the record; I have been working for it for two years." Sometimes the small steps don't always produce the result desired. "It's really tough not to scratch," said 8th graders Amanda Stumpe and Janae Kelly. Kelly added, "But you just have to go for it because my focus is jumping to get a PR!" 1. Leaping off the board, Keaton Rupp, 8, tries his best to gain distance in the sandpit. GET OVER IT Flexibility is key! AMS hurdlers trained endlessly throughout the track season, working on their technique. Going through track practice with determination every day of the season. Stretching, run-throughs, and good coaching. All of those factors led to creating some of the most talented 8th-grade hurdlers at AMS, and it paid off. AMS was proud to know that they were placing in their hurdling events. Thanks to good attitude and precision, AMS had a great season for hurdling. 1. Hurdling is no joke. Stick to the strength. Discus is a field event where competitors have a small weighted circular disc. Competitors see how far they can throw it. When throwing disc, it's important for athletes to have a quality form so that it can be a step in helping them succeed in further meets.

TAKE THE JUMP Jumping into a win. High jump is a field event where athletes try and see if they can beat the challenge of making it over the bar. The bar is set to a certain height to begin with and if everyone can jump over it they will then raise it. In order to place first athletes will have to be able to jump the highest until no one else can. Once you hit your third miss, your heat is over.

you say JUMP we say HOW HIGH

Run, run, as fast as you can! You'll never catch us. We're the Trojans! The 7th grade long and high jump teams dominated in the air during the 2022 track and field season. Long and high jumps are both hard-to-do events, both requiring speed, strength, and agility to achieve their goals. In the long jump, the goal is to go as far as you can. While in the high jump, you try to get above a horizontal bar. "Getting sandy and being good at it," said 7th grader Marleigh Eberhardt is her favorite part of the long jump. From making memories at meets and practices to having fun with friends, the 7th graders had a blast. In the next year, the 7th graders will push past their records and obtain goals above the horizon.

FEATURING...

YOUR 7TH-GRADE GIRLS' RELAY TEAMS It was a matter of time and work. 7th-grade girls dominated the season in their relays. From the 4x100m to the 4x200m, and to the 4x400m. With the field event relay for the fun of it, and the dominating medley relay team. A and B teams gave it their all and the work paid off. In the 4th meet of the season the 4x400m A team featuring 7th-grade girls, Brecken Bogner, Samantha Siegrist, Cole Torgerson, and Katie Robert, broke the school record, 4:33.10, with a time of 4:30.29. "It felt AMAZING! We finally reached the goal we have been aiming for, and it felt absolutely fantastic," exclaimed Katie Robert, 7. Each of the girls strived for the win, they encouraged each other every meet and got each other hyped up before the race. Before and after each team had its own traditions. "We stretched together and danced around," Lindy Jessop, 7 proclaimed. Every single one of the relay teams worked their hardest and exceeded expectations.

IT'S ALL IN YOURHEAD Many believe the main part of competing in track is being fit, fast, and athletic. Although track can put a lot of physical stress on your body, that is not the only element to winning. Track athletes can agree that this sport takes not only physical but mental energy, too. There's a lot of self-preparation that goes on before a meet. Whether listening to music helps get runners ready or reminding themselves why they run track in the first place; everyone devises a plan to get out of their head, and compete well on the field. No matter who it is, there's always something going on behind the scenes.

Who is one person you couldn't have gone

GO! REACH!

The seventh-grade boys' relay teams focused hard to make the hand-offs perfect as they communicate with each other and scream "GO! REACH!" Brooks Brown, 7 said, "before a race, the relay team stretches and works on handoffs." The seventh-grade boys' relay teams were very successful this year starting off the season with a 4x100m win, 4x200m second place, and 4x400m third place. At the league meet and the last meet of the season the 4x100m team got third, the 4x200m team got fourth place and the 4x400m team got third place. Caleb Back, 7 shared, "The season was pretty good." Overall the teams did really well throughout the season and competed strongly with Trojan pride.

Long & Strong

They say records are made to be broken. 7th grader Samantha Siegrist puts the pressure on several records first meet on. "At the beginning of the track meet I thought I had no chance of breaking any of the records that had been set from previous years but when I realized I was close to them I just made it a goal to beat one," said Siegrist. Seventh-grade distance runners Cole Torgerson, Brecken Bogner, and Allison de la Garza also dominated in 7th-grade girls' distance races. Consistency is key! 7th grader Isaiah Day was consistent and finished in the top three of every race. 7th grader Triston Toy was also a strong contender on the leader board. It is so important to finish strong! "The toughest part of the distance race is the finish. It is important to have a kick with strong competitors quickly coming behind you. The last stretch is when you have to give it your all and focus on the finish line," answered 7th graders, Brecken Bogner and Allison de la Garza. Friends and competitors always pacing with each other. 7th-grade distance runners Isaiah Day and Triston Toy finished every race one in front of the other. Toy and Day exclaimed, "We always mess around with each other and say things like, "I'm gonna beat you!"

Wrap up! As we wrap up the 2021-2022 track season the Trojans competed strongly and scored high at each and every track meet. The scores at the meets will eventually be forgotten but the friendships and connections made throughout these times in our lives will forever be remembered. When 7th and 8th graders were asked what their favorite part of track was they said that they loved to hang out with their friends and see people from other schools that they know. 8th grader Scarlett Nguyen said, "My favorite part of track is seeing friends from other schools." 7th grader Trevor Bice said, "My favorite part of track is hanging out with friends."

MR. JONES Q & A

What will you miss about AMS?

"I will miss the family feeling that the AMS Staff has. I will miss watching students grow from 6th graders to 8th graders and then watch them walk across the stage at HS Graduation. I will miss watching our sports teams perform, grow and win championships."

What is a favorite memory about your time as asst. principal and AD here at AMS? "The year that AMS has a bicycle daredevil group perform in the gym as a reward for students that raised so much money in our school fundraiser.
