Thisspeech,deliveredAugust28,1963,isoneofthemostfamedinAmerican History.MLKJr.calledforcivilandeconomicrightstoendracismintheUnited States.Nowadays,thisspeechstillrepresentsunityintheblackcommunity. CelebratedeveryFebruary,allmonthlong,BlackHistoryMonthisachanceto remembertheseleadersandcelebratetheirheritage
Bornin1929inAtlantaGeorgia,youngMartinLutherKingJr grewupwatchinghisfather,apastor,fightagainstsegregationinhis dailylife.
In1963,KingandtheSCLC workedwiththeNAACtoorganize theMarchonWashingtonforjobsandfreedom.Thiswasoneofthe largestmarchesinUShistory,attracting250,000people,andMLK Jr.deliveringhismajesticallyfamous“IHaveaDream”speech.
Overthenextseveralyears,Kingspokeoutagainstmanywarand economicissues.MLKJr.visitedMemphis,Tennesseetosupporta strikebyBlacksanitaryworkers.OnApril4th,MartinLutherKing Jr wasassassinatedinhishotelroom CongresscementedMLKJr’s legacybymakingthethirdMondayofeveryJanuaryMartinLuther KingJr andhonoredKingwithmanyvariousawardsand memorials
Elected44thPresidentoftheUnitedStatesinthe2008Election, BarackHusseinObamaIIbecamethefirstAfricanAmericantohold theoffice FramersoftheConstitutionhopedthatourleaderwouldn’t belimitedtowealthorfamilyconnections,butalsoagainsttheir prejudicesoftheirtime,mostwouldn’tofforeseenandAfrican Americantotaketheoffice.

OnJanuary21,theteamtraveledtoWilburMiddleSchooltocompeteintheirfirstcompetition.Overall,the teamtook3rdplace.Severalindividualawardsweregiven,includinga1stplaceribbontoColinFriend,8,and NathanRosen,7.
ColinFriend,8,stated,"Itfeltgood.Thefunnythingiswewonthisyearonlybecausetheyhaven'tchanged thetestsincelastyear"
AMShostedtheregionalcompetitionformiddleandhighschoolthisyearonFebruary4 15teamswereinvited tocompetefromacrossKansas.Threeteamsadvancedtostatefromtheoverallteamstandings,andAndoverwas oneofthem.
Oneofthebiggestcomponentsofaregionalcompetitionaretheproctorsandteacherswhoruntheevents. AMSteachersvolunteeredandgavetheirtimeonFebruary4torunaneventorjudgepartofthecompetition. Mrs.AmberRiedywasoneoftheteacherswhovolunteered,andshesaid,"Idecidedtohelpoutbecauseit'sa greatwaytosupportseveralofmygiftedstudents"
Alltogether,theScienceOlympiadteamaddedanotherwintotheirarsenalandrepresentedourschoolwith pride.

Artissucharewardingwaytoexpressyourselfcreativelyandlearnmoreaboutyourself.Whenasked aboutwhyshefeelsartisimportantMrs.JohnnaStoffregen,AndoverMiddleSchool’sartteacher,stated, “Artissoimportantinthelivesofyoungpeoplebecauseitprovidesanoutletforself-expressionandhelps studentsdevelopintellectualcapabilitiesthatservetheminallareasoflife.Studyingvisualartfosterscivic engagementandteachesstudentstovaluediversepopulationsandcultures.Artisameansofdeveloping creative and flexible forms of thinking as well as habits of mind such as envisioning, innovating, and reflecting.Artalsocontributestoqualityoflife,makingtheworldmorebeautifulandjoyous!"

Cafeteria Conversion

Though, don’t take this for granted. With all the new changes to the cafeteria,therearealsonewrules.YoumusthaveyourIDwithyouandreadyinlineforhotlunch; youareallowedtochooseyourownseatingthoughnoonesitsalone.Norunning,nopushing,and nosavingseats.Thesearen'tjustrules,they’reexpectations.Expectationsthatthestaffholdsthe studentsaccountablefororyou’llswitchbacktoassignedseats.
Therearenowonlythreelunches:1,2,and3.Lunchesarenowfullerthentheywereinthepast, sotheAMSstudentswillhavetotakeextracaretocleanupafterthemselves,thecafeteria,and respecttherulesthattheadministrationmadeinordertoallowthestudentstohavefreeseatingand anice,newlunchroom Toreinsurethatthefreeseatingruleisheretostay,theAMSstudentsmust followtherules,berespectful,andbekindtoothers
