Home of the brave By Lily Ralston, Staff Editor and Rose Gosset, Staff Writer “I pledge allegiance to the flag,” those are six words that Americans recite with pride each time the phrase is spoken. Every year on November 11th, the United States takes time to recognize and remember the veterans who have served or are serving in the military. Veterans Day was founded in 1918 on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh hour to celebrate and honor the end of World War I. Now on Veterans Day we take the time to thank veterans for protecting our nation. This year AMS celebrated in a variety of ways including a presentation of the flag by local boy scouts, sharing stories honoring fallen and active veterans, and watching a video produced by STUCO. The video demonstrated the story of the Missing Man Table. This table is set with 6 chairs, each representing a branch of the military, and a missing man from that branch. There are currently around 21.8 million veterans that serve to protect us. America is very grateful that veterans are there to fight for our freedom. When asked why it is important to celebrate Veterans Day, Mae Fetters, 8, said “Because it’s important to celebrate the people who sacrifice their lives for everyone else's freedom.”
An Interview with Mr. Daniel Potucek, US Army Veteran & 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher Q: Why did you decide to join the military? A: I joined the military mainly because of 9/11. I wanted to do something that would help protect Americans and make my family proud. Q: What was the most memorable moment in your military career? A: The most memorable moment for me was when I first got into Iraq. Seeing a foreign country for the first time is something I will never forget. Q: What did you miss the most while you were away from home? A: I missed American food the most. Q:What do you think is the most important thing people can do to support their nation? A: The most important thing people can do to support their nation is to become a knowledgeable and active citizen. Being active within one's community, understanding current events, and being able to analyze information from multiple sources seems to be the most effective way to achieve that goal.

We are gen z By Bella Bouddhara, Staff Writer, and Izzy Kwaw, Staff Editor Aye yo, fam, this article slaps and that's all fax no cap. Have you ever heard any of these phrases? Living in this new generation, chances are you probably have. Groups of people are classified into a certain generation depending on the year you were born in. To be a part of Generation Z, you must’ve been born between the years 1997-2012, which means the majority of people here at AMS belong to Gen Z. According to ManagementIsAJourney.com, Gen Z is on track to be the most well-educated, racially, and ethnically diverse generation. In fact, Gen Z is on its way to becoming the largest generation as they surpass Millennials (born in 1981-1996). Perhaps this is because Gen Z has never lived in a world where the internet did not exist. This results in global events shaping Gen Z’s view of the world which allows Gen Z to be more comfortable with making friends, communicating openly, and making changes in social communities. Instead of tolerating or accepting diversity, they expect it. Diversity is their life experience. From neon color trends accented by oversized tees, paired with high ponytails while speaking in weird slang terms, AMS has seen it all, but there's nothing quite like the generation of today. ManagementIsAJourney.com stated, “Gen Z is determined to take charge of their future and less willing to accept a world filled with negativity and bad outcomes.” Are you proud to be a member of Gen Z?

Sleeping SEnsations By Allison de la Garza, Staff Writer Beep, beep. Your alarm clock wakes you up every day, but what wakes animals up out of hibernation every year? Most people think of bears when the term hibernation comes to mind. There are many more animals that hibernate, such as bumblebees, chipmunks, Dwarf lemurs, geckos, squirrels, groundhogs, and hedgehogs. Animals that hibernate can enter a state of torpor, or low physical and mental activity, for up to almost a year. They can hibernate for several reasons, whether it be to escape the weather or because of a low food source. Dwarf lemurs that live in Madagascar hibernate to escape the heat. Common poorwills are the only birds that truly hibernate and they do it if there is scarce food. Think about all animals, they have a story to tell, a journey they went through. We are the same. Humans of all ages constantly learn and grow to help them succeed. Ralph Ellison, an American novelist, once said, “A hibernation is a covert preparation for a more overt action.”

Braves in Six By Emile Rivero, Staff Writer Strike! Braves win! The Atlanta Braves won their first World Series since 1995 against the Houston Astros. On November 2nd, the Freddie Freeman-led Atlanta Braves marched into Houston and beat the Astros 7-0 in game six to win the World Series. Freeman is their First Baseman and has been on the team since 2010. AMS Student and Braves fan Jace Daugherty, 7, shared what it felt like for his team to finally win a World Series, stating, “We haven't won a championship in about 30 years, and Freddie Freeman deserved a ring." Atlanta beat the reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship in game six to get to the big series. What makes the World Series win even more impressive is that Atlanta was without All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. the entire postseason. Acuña Jr. was sidelined after tearing his ACL on June 10th.
Tipoff Time The defending champions Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks opened up the NBA season hosting Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets. The Bucks had a booming victory, winning 127-104. Antetokounmpo, who is a forward for Milwaukee, put up 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Later that night, the Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 121-114. Steph Curry put up 21 points and had 10 assists for Golden State. Curry plays Point Guard for the Warriors and is a 2-time MVP and has won 3 championships with Golden State. Right now, the Phoenix Suns are the #1 Seed in the West, while the Chicago Bulls are at the top of the East. The Bulls are led by guard Lonzo Ball and forward DeMar DeRozan. DeRozan is averaging about 27 points and 6 rebounds per game. DeRozan was traded from the Spurs this offseason in a deal that involved big-man Thaddeus Young. Ball was also acquired by the Bulls this offseason. Back to the west, the Lakers are in a slump after starting the season with a record of 11-11, which was not anticipated for the successful franchise. Los Angeles had won the NBA Championship in the summer of 2020 during the Coronavirus Pandemic where all teams were forced to play in the bubble.

Thankful for Thanksgiving By Emily Meyer and Rose Gosset, Staff Writers
Time for thankfulness, recognition, and gratefulness. This year Trojans have continued their family traditions such as watching the Macy's day parade or breaking a wishbone for good luck. Merrick Stephan, 6, shared that one of the traditions that their family did for Thanksgiving was “Going to Florida.” Traditions like these were a great way to celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving. No matter how the Coronavirus had affected the Trojans, they still found ways to get closer with their family. Emerie Schartz, 8, said that to get closer to her family she will, "Go and visit them. shopping shutdowns By Izzy Kwaw and Ellie Johnson, Staff Editors All around the world, there are wants and needs for anything and everything, also known as supply and demand. With labor and truck driver shortages, there are not enough workers to deliver the supplies at a time where demands are high. Now, those who are working to move goods globally are saying that if their working conditions don’t improve, there could be a direct and negative impact on the supply. Shopping early is always a good idea, but it is now becoming a necessity.

dashing deals By Izzy Kwaw and Ellie Johnson, Staff Editors Shop til you drop! Black Friday is an American tradition that marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. According to NY Daily News, the name dates back to the 1960s, when police officers in Philadelphia began using it as a term to describe the chaos that resulted when large numbers of suburban tourists came into the city to begin their holiday shopping. This comes as no surprise considering that it is a time to get some of the best deals. From TV’s to kitchen appliances, if you’re looking for the right time to find something for cheap, Black Friday is the day. Even though Black Friday can be exciting, the excitement can turn into potentially unsafe situations. Shopping malls and stores have safety precautions in place to ensure they keep their customers safe on this busy, bustling day of deals.
