Fiona Newland – EDITOR/PUBLISHER The holiday season is a vulnerable time for all homeowners, as would-be thieves are prowling the suburbs, looking to break into our homes and grab some of our most valuable possessions. A joint initiative between the City of Armadale and the Armadale Police has created eWatch, a great service dedicated to making our district a safer place to live, work and enjoy life. For more information about this initiative, read the story on page 4.

The Christmas and New Year period is sometimes the only time when people can get away. A local family who managed to get away on the holiday of a lifetime has found the time to put pen to paper for The Valley Reporter, producing a travel story with a difference. To see more about their overseas adventure, see page 22 and 23. On that note, I encourage all holiday makers to do the same as this family, since it is a great thing to share your experiences across the globe with other people, so start your writing now!

With all the doom and gloom of interest rate hikes from the big banks, it’s nice to see a positive financial story once in a while. See page 16 in this month’s Valley Reporter for ‘Bendigo customers have reason to smile!’. Branch manager Michelle Brace believes that successful customers create a successful

community which creates a successful bank, but only in that order.

Speaking of successful communities, I wish to raise your attention to the importance of backing local businesses. We have an excellent range of small, mainly family-run businesses, but they need local people’s support, if they are to continue to thrive in the future. The Valley Reporter has always been about promoting the many local businesses, groups and organisations within our community, and asks you to do your part to help preserve the unique character and economic viability of our Roleystone town centre for the generations to come.

Let’s start shopping smart by shopping local, so we can motivate some purchasing decisions and give a real boost to the spending in our area. It will make you feel really good, knowing that you are helping your neighbours and community.

Lastly, some of you may have noticed the recent arrival of one of the FESA’s Sikorsky choppers on Cross Park Roleystone, and it can only bring to mind one thing - the risk of bushfires.

It does give me some peace of mind, knowing that they are close by and ready for action if the need should arise. I’m sure many other Perth homeowners are very appreciative of the brave pilots of these waterbombers as they continue fighting bushfires. Keep up the great work!

girls!! The group commenced in August 2010 with 16 children and some on a waiting list. The journey has been amazing with the children enjoying lots of fun activities and learning to work in a group situation. The parents have been wonderfully supportive with being rostered on to help and supplying materials and donating money for resources.

We have a waiting list for 2011 and hopefully we will be able to find some sponsorship to pay our teachers to continue this program starting in Term 1. We are still looking!!

Jan Matthews, Principal, also shared my dream and has been instrumental in the organisation for setting up the program.

Even though I am transferring to RDHS next year I know that Jan will continue to lead the search for funding to continue the group.

We have formed a partnership with Fraser Williams of Roleystone Real Estate who will donate part of the selling fees for houses sold by parents from the school to support our group. We thank them most sincerely.

Since I came to RPS in 2008 it has been a dream of mine to have a prekindy group especially for those children who turn 4 years old in the second half of the year.

I have always believed that the first 5 years of a child’s life are the most vital and that the child’s brain develops more in this time than at any other time of their lives.

Hence the critical role of parents in their child’s development. The majority of parents do an incredible job in providing a stimulating learning environment for their children by playing with them, reading to them each day, singing and talking to them and providing them with lots of stimulating physical and mental activities.

The pre-kindy group encompasses all those skills and knowledge in a social, playway environment with structured learning activities and routines.

The main issue with commencing such a group was funding. We had two amazing staff in Roxy Davin and Edith Smith who were happy to donate their time and energy in running this program. They are such professionals and have done a fantastic job. Thank you so much

Due to the predicted extreme weather conditions for the hills one of the FESA’s Sikorsky choppers was recently deployed to Cross Park Roleystone on the 2nd of January.

Welcome to the Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade News for January 2011 It appears that summer is with us and I am sure that we will have many days of high temperatures ahead of us. As you are no doubt aware, we have had a Helitac stationed at Cross Park once already this fire season.

From the latest reports, we have had only 10 callouts (most of a minor nature) possibly because of the efficiency of our crews.

The largest we attended was the Baldavis fire, followed by the Bungendore Park White Rails Road fire.

We were also on stand-by for the Lake Clifton fire. Let’s hope we all have a safe and fire-free summer in Roleystone.

Healthy Mother, Healthy Baby Every mum wants a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Preconception care means that you are as healthy as possible heading into pregnancy and this can have a positive effect on your health during pregnancy, and positively influence the birth process and baby’s health too.

Pre-Conception Care Research over recent years has shown that preparing for pregnancy can have a positive outcome for both mother and child and that this ideally will start at least 3 months prior to conception. This is even more important as we age.

Address any weight issues - obesity and low body fat can both be detrimental to falling pregnant.

Prior to trying to conceive

it is important to have your rubella immunity checked.

Nutrition is of prime importance and a lot of attention is given to Folic acid as it is essential to prevent neural tube issues.

Other nutrients also play a critical role in the development of the baby and health of the mother, and it is important to have these levels assessed.

There are also lifestyle factors that can negatively affect fertility and pregnancy including tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and drugs.

You and your partner may require additional support to balance your hormones.

Maintaining hormonal balance is important and can at times be challenging.

The ring involved parents engaged in social networking sites in the United States, Britain, and Australia.

Queensland police through Taskforce ARGOS, as part of their investigation into the ring provided information to WA police. It will be alleged the man indecently assaulted his 5yr old daughter and in a separate incident, indecently recorded her with the intention of sharing the images with others he was communicating with in an online chat forum.

It will also be alleged that he had in his possession, a computer with other child exploitation material, which he also intended to share in the chat forum. The man was charged with one count each of Indecently recording a child who was a lineal relative, Distributing child exploitation material, Possessing child exploitation with intent to distribute and Indecent dealings with a child who is a lineal relative. He appeared in

court on 4 January. This case demonstrates the effective networks that are continually being built and maintained nationally and internationally between police agencies to tackle crimes using social networking sites.

HOON SEIZURE ALLEGED 241KPH ON MULTANOVA Traffic Enforcement Group members seized a 2004 V8 Holden Commodore Utility after it was recorded by a Multanova speed camera travelling on the Tonkin Highway, Champion Lakes on 31 December at an alleged speed of 241kph. The posted speed was 100kph. A 22yr old Darling Downs man was arrested and charged with (1) Reckless Driving (more than 45kph over the posted speed) and (2) No Authority to Drive - cancelled. He was released on bail to attend Armadale Magistrates Court on 3 February. The vehicle was owned by the driver’s mother and will be impounded for 28 days.

Double the celebrations for Dale Cottages Dale Cottages in Armadale has been able to celebrate two milestones lately – the 100th birthday of resident Sam Unie, and the recent addition of 15 more Community Aged Care Packages (CACP) to its service portfolio.

In front of gathered family and friends at Dale Cottages, Canning MHR Don Randall presented Mr Unie with a 100th Birthday Certificate from the Australian Government.

Mr Randall spoke of how a 100th birthday was a very, special occasion and a milestone that deserved to be recognised and celebrated. Mr Randall asked Mr Unie the secret to staying youthful, to which Mr Unie replied, “work hard”. Mr Randall also congratulated Dale Cottages in successfully securing an additional 15 Community Aged Care Packages (CACP). The additional packages mean the facility now has a total of 45 packages to offer to local residents.

Mr Randall said the packages were important to the community as they provided care and support for people who wanted to stay living at home for as long as possible.

“The Community Aged Care Packages allow senior citizens a better quality of life while still living in their own home,” he said.

“The packages can include a number of services, such as help with meal preparation,

laundry and housework, gardening, transport and social support.

“As Dale Cottages has the infrastructure to facilitate these services, it would be shame if these types of packages were not offered via Dale Cottages.”

Dale Cottages CEO Trudi Hodges welcomed the additional packages.

“Dale Cottages works very hard to support the community and offering services to people in their own home allows us to extend the Dale Cottages family to the broader community – people do not have to come and live in our complex to receive care – we are happy to go to them,” she said.

“All evidence points to the fact that people want to stay in their own homes as long as they possibly can, and having Community Aged Care Packages allows us to support them to do so.”

The Community Aged Care Packages (CACP) program is run through the Australian Government’s Department of Health and Ageing. Mr Randall urged people who lived in the Armadale-Kelmscott area that wanted to be assessed for eligibility for a package to contact the Dale Community Care offices at 2 Hobbs Drive, Armadale, or by calling 9399 6800.

The unbelievably disastrous flood events that have devastated nearly every state in the country, and the major bushfire event at Waroona have shown just how fast communities can be critically impacted and challenged by the raw power of nature.

These events however also bring out the best in communities through the fierce determination, resilience and outstanding support shown by Australians everywhere.

Our major threat is obviously fire (especially now in summer) but we have also had some real challenges as a community through major storms, tornadoes and torrential rain. Just how prepared are you and your family if we have are faced with

“With reference to the front page of the West Australian dated 3rd January 2011”

On January 3rd of this year, the front page of the Western Australian newspaper published positive news that indicates that thousands will be needed to work in the new WA boom.

During the course of these past two months, we have been publicly commenting that we expect 2011 to be a much stronger real estate market than that which we saw in 2010. This article mentioned that WA is poised to experience another strong mining boom, re-affirming our thoughts on the positive real estate market forecast for 2011.

This is another excellent indication of the strength of WA’s economy which will ultimately see many more buyers and ultimately property price increases during the course of this year.

The other positive news is that on average, we Australians are selling our homes roughly every 10 years. This means that the average seller today bought back in 2000/01 at a price level well below today’s average house prices. The increase in average house prices over this time means that substantial equity is built up in property, and only a small price decrease has been bought about by the real estate market over the past year in comparison to the increase in equity accumulated during this 10 year period.

Footnote – Fraser believes that the bottom of the property cycle was Nov/Dec 2010 and house prices in 2011 will increase this calendar year.

Convicted snake smugglers fined in Perth courts Ritchie said he was charged following a search warrant executed by WA Police on his property in January this year.

Ms Ritchie said wildlife smuggling was an ongoing problem and removing protected fauna from the wild had serious implications.

“In the Piromalli case, the carpet python cannot be released in a different location from where it was taken due to the possible effects on the local gene pool of this species. It also poses a risk of introducing disease to wild populations, but we will ensure that it is appropriately cared for,” she said.

“Wild reptiles should be allowed to remain in their natural habitat. DEC takes the unlawful possession of protected reptiles and reptile trafficking very seriously, and we will continue to investigate these matters.”

Under the WA Wildlife Conservation Act the maximum penalty for taking or possessing and keeping specially protected fauna is $4000.

Anyone who has information about the illegal removal of reptiles or notices any suspicious activity suggesting that reptiles are being illegally moved should call DEC’s Wildcare hotline 9474 9055.

Monster Bulky Goods Centre Construction of Australia’s biggest hybrid bulky goods centre in Forrestdale Business Park on Ranford Road near Armadale will kick off next year in 2011. To be built by WA property developer, ABN Group, the $250 million Homeplex development will have floor space spanning 7.6 ha and provide a new home to major retailers in Perth’s growing south-east corridor. ABN managing director Dale Alcock said the areas surrounding Forrestdale Business Park and to the south were some of Perth’s main growth suburbs, with an expected additional population of 168,000 people living in the region over the next decade.

“It is expected that by 2031, the total population of local government areas of Armadale, Gosnells, Serpentine and Jarrahdale is projected to top 240,000.

Mr Alcock said.

“Homeplex at Forrestdale Business Park will fill a void in the south-east corridor and will be well positioned to meet market demand for convenient services and retail outlets. This coupled with continuing change to WA’s trading arrangements means large bulky - goods development has a healthy outlook in WA. The complex will be built on a 15.5 ha site and is destined to surpass other large goods retail complexes in Australia, such as the Gepps Cross Centre in Adelaide. Armadale Redevelopment Authority chief executive John Ellis said Forrestdale Business Park would accommodate up to 700 industrial lots potentially delivering up to 10,000 jobs.

“To enable subdivision and development among private land owners, the ARA is managing $55 million in infrastructure spending through a developer contribution scheme funded by landowners to implement a structured plan” he said. Ref: http://www.armadale.wa.gov.au.

A 46 year old man from New South Wales has been fined $2000 and ordered to pay $9735 in court costs after being convicted of illegally possessing 29 native reptiles.

Neil Andrew Simpson was apprehended at Perth Airport on 25 April 2009 after officers from the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) intercepted the illegal consignment of reptiles which had been flown to Perth from Newman and were scheduled to be put on a flight to Sydney.

The consignment included a death adder, geckos of various species, dragon lizards, a blue-tongue lizard and pythons.

The reptiles were concealed in plastic containers.

Mr Simpson was convicted this week in the Perth Central Law Courts following a two day trial.

There was also a second conviction in the Perth Magistrates Court this week, when a 33 year old Nollamara man was fined a total of $600 and ordered to pay $110 in court costs for illegally keeping a 2m south-west carpet python at his home.

State of the Environment Report 2011

The City of Armadale is releasing its third “State of the Environment” report for public comment next month. As the name implies, the State of the Environment report (SoE) is an overview of the current state of the environment in the City, and all actions aimed at improving it.

In this case, the environment is broken down under the headings: biodiversity, wetlands, watercourses, water resources, climate, sustainability, clean air and unpolluted land.

These headings reflect those of the State Government’s SoE report. The two previous SoE reports for the City (2000, 2005) and the Local Biodiversity Strategy (2009, containing up-to-date maps) can be found at: http://www.armadale.wa.gov.au/Home/Services_ And_Facilities/Environment/Environmental_ Initiatives#sep.

Briefly the current SoE report covers: • Biodiversity on Public Reserves: revision and development of further reserve management plans for reserves with biodiversity value. Weed, dieback and fire management plans. Support of community

• Biodiversity on Private Land: revision of planning policies (PLN), the Town Planning Scheme (TPS) and the Local Planning Strategy (LPS).

Implementation of the Local Biodiversity Strategy (LBS). Development and ongoing promotion of stewardship programs for biodiversity and stream care.

• Wetlands and Watercourses: revision and development of planning policies for land use and development near water. Contributions to the Swan River Trust, as well as river and catchment protection strategies. Drain renovations and industry education.

• Climate/sustainability: corporate (City of Armadale) goals for sustainability and energy efficiency. Promotion of walking and cycling through urban design.

Planning is well underway to build on the success of the 2010 Araluen’s Fremantle Chilli Festival.

Opportunities exist to join with some of Perth’s most iconic brands to take advantage of the sponsorship packages on offer for the forthcoming 2011 Araluen’s Fremantle Chilli Festival (now in its 9th year), which is being held on the Esplanade Reserve, Fremantle 19 & 20 March 2011.

ARALUEN’S BOTANIC BLUES We are very excited about the line-up we have for the 2011 concert. On stage first will be Jonesy’s Cow who are really making a name for themselves on the local scene. They are followed by the very talented Kim Bettenay Band who are well known in the area. From the home of the blues we welcome Eugene ‘Hideaway’ Bridges. Eugene hails from America’s deep south and has sung gospel with his brothers at an early age. Blues is his first love and he has toured extensively across Europe, American and Australia.

Finally, one of Australia’s leading Blues musicians Darren Jack will take the stage with his band. Darren has played and supported a long line of Australian and International bands.

Dive into Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge The long lazy days of summer are here and what better way is there to spend the school holidays than reading?

Kids from kindergarten to year 7 can Dive into Reading as part of the Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge to be in the running for some great prizes.

This annual initiative, run by the Department of Education, encourages a love of reading by challenging young people to meet a reading target during the summer holidays.

Children from kindergarten to Year 3 are challenged to read for 10 hours during the summer, which is less than 10 minutes each day. Children from Year 4 to Year 7 are challenged to read for 15 hours, or less than 15 minutes a day.

Roleystone-Karragullen Community Bank® Branch Manager, Michelle Brace said staff had been overwhelmed by local residents eager to support Queensland’s flood affected communities.

“Our thoughts are with those communities right across Queensland that have been impacted by the floods,” she said.

“Our staff and directors are keen to do what they can and at the moment one of the best ways we can help is by digging deep and making a donation.”

More than 1000 individual donors have made a donation to the appeal, which recently reached $212,000 in contributions.

James Austin upon our arrival, we unpacked all our belongings from the car (just the basics; fishing gear, food, drinks, bathers, dvd’s, music, binoculars, books and sunscreen).

Then we all got on board for an hour of practical training (skipper’s ticket not required) before leaving Westbay, Augusta. Once we successfully got through the navigational channel, it was literally smooth sailing through the Hardy Inlet and into the gorgeous Blackwood River.

There are numerous moorings that you can stay at along the Blackwood River; The Sanctuary, The Molloy, Fishers, Mates, Haven, Good Luck, The Nook, Nicko’s and Rocky’s Bend. As we soaked up nature’s finest offerings in total comfort, we passed the bird sanctuary, river dolphins, Molloy Island and 20km of unspoilt National Park.

For our first port of call, we decided the mooring called ‘Good Luck’ was a good place to start. With fishing gear in hand, and a fierce determination to catch something, we set out. We were excited by the conquest of some Black Bream, but it turned out to be too small to keep. We managed to catch the odd crab or two (they actually got caught on the fishing line) but still nothing. Dinner on our first night ended up being bbq sausages in a bun.

On the second day we decided to moor at ‘Rocky’s Bend’ near the Alexandra Bridge, which turned out to be the most idyllic spot imaginable. It was really quite lovely and calm. The next morning we were briefly greeted by 4 river dolphins before we set off for our new location. ‘The Cove’, a bird sanctuary and small sheltered inlet was our mooring for the third day. The heat of the day lead us to discover that it was also a good place for lots of swimming.

On our last day we moored at ‘The Molloy’, in order to be as close as possible to homebase for when we made the trek back. Here we had the convenience of the Molloy Caravan Park, complete with a small kiosk full of bait, fuel, and basic grocery items.

Many holiday makers close by us also grabbed the opportunity to enjoy some skiing and wakeboarding on the Blackwood River.

Unbeknownst to us, due to the increases in commercial and recreational fishing, the arrival of algae and the lack of rain in recent decades, there has been a steady decline in the number of valuable fish species in the Blackwood River. However, with the installment of the ‘Restocking the Blackwood River Estuary with Black Bream’ program, the management has been provided with some much needed advice that can be used to develop plans for sustaining the enhanced stock of Black Bream in the Blackwood River Estuary.

Even though we didn’t have much luck in the fishing department, we all enjoyed the tranquil natural setting that surrounded us each day and night on our trip. We’d have no hesitation on recommending it as a holiday for any family or couple.

MY CHINA AND INDOCHINA TOUR PART 1 by Ron Knox In January of 2010 I journeyed with my daughter and two grandchildren to Harbin in north-eastern China to view the Ice Festival, an annual 4-week celebration of the country’s winter wonders. Harbin, situated some 1250km from Beijing, is the capital of the Heilongjang province and the 10th largest city in China, boasting a population exceeding 4 million people.

The city’s location accounts for its almost arctic climate, which provides abundant natural ice and snow. The “Ice City” is recognised as the centre of ice and snow art in China, and is famous for its exquisite and artistic ice and snow sculptures.

We left Perth at a scorching 40 degrees and were greeted in Beijing the next day with snow and temperatures averaging at a freezing minus 12 degrees! After a day of seeing the sights and enjoying the almost frightening delicacies from the Chinese food market in Beijing, we caught the bullet train to Harbin. The train was comfortable, clean and offered a variety of snacks including what I sincerely hoped was coffee(?).

It was an added bonus that there was no smoking in our compartment.

After 8 hours we arrived in Harbin, where we found ourselves battling through some of the most chaotic traffic I have ever witnessed. The tedium of the peak hour jam was kept at bay by our driver’s insightful suggestion to try the local delicacy; dumplings. We savoured the pork, mutton, chicken and fish, encased in a soft dough, but did struggle as we tackled them with chopsticks, much to the entertainment of the staff, who gave a standing ovation when I eventually captured and devoured one.

The city was spectacular, and had a very festive feel about it, owing to the coloured lights that adorned the trees. Our hotel, situated directly opposite the frozen Songhua River, had an amazing view of the streets, where local operators vied for business with their various wares of dog sleds, motorised skis, picturesque horsedrawn carriages, motor bikes and car rides.

It was all very exhilarating, especially when we gained a very different perspective from above in our cable car ride.

Harbin plays a very important part in China’s trade with Russia, which is mirrored in the heavy Russian influence found in the city’s architecture. Harbin is a Manchu word meaning “place for drying fish nets”, a term which is understandable considering the massive size of the Songhua River.

The province was previously known as Manchuria.

The evening we arrived, we visited the Disney Ice and Snow Garden Party, which is small in comparison to the main Ice Festival, but still very enjoyable (especially for the little ones). The warm atmosphere created by the Disney characters was only marred by the minus thirty-five degree temperature, which had us all well wrapped up in 6 layers of clothing plus goose-down jackets.

The next day we visited the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, an annual competition in which enormous snow and ice sculptures are displayed at Sun Island. Every year sculptors and teams from across the globe congregate here to carve sculpted spectacles of monuments, animals, people and mythical creatures from giant blocks of ice.

The festival in Harbin is one of the world’s 4 largest ice and snow extravaganza’s, alongside those in Sapporo (Japan), Quebec City (Canada) and Norway. The ice sculpture decoration technology ranges from the modern (using lasers) to traditional (ice lanterns). Being there was an amazing experience, especially in the evening when the coloured lights were turned on to illuminate the works of art. It was truly surreal, almost fairytale-like. There was even an ice cafe serving hot coca cola!

We spent the following day at Ice and Snow World, which was truly the highlight of the trip. It is hard to describe the brilliance of the sculptures that we saw. There were fairytale palaces, towering pagodas, the Egyptian Sphinx, giant beer bottles, rose gardens, sky scrapers reaching up to 30 metres high and one of the longest slides in the world. It was an organza of endless creations encased in translucent ice, and illuminated by multi-coloured lights.

It was sad to think that within a few weeks it would be demolished so the site could be prepared for 2011 celebrations.

Works underway for yOUth & community facility Orchard Avenue in the Armadale city centre will soon be the site of an exciting City of Armadale community facility with a youth focus.

Construction works are under way adjacent to the Civic Administration Centre and when complete, it will feature street-real skate features, passive viewing areas, terrace seating and an innovative multi-purpose sculptural steel surface, combining skate elements and a digital media projection screen.

Congratulations are in order for Roleystone’s Jordan Howell. Jordan has been selected in the Southern Warriors Little League baseball team to compete at the State Championships over the Easter weekend in April. Well done also to Jordan Groves and Jack Warrington, who were both chosen as reserves and invited to continue training with the team. Selections for the regional representative side followed three tough try-out nights during December against kids from many other clubs.

Meanwhile, Roleystone Tee-ballers had a special visitor to their game on Saturday 18 December when Santa Claus parked his sleigh at Springdale Park. Jolly Santa distributed lolly bags to all the children and no doubt heard many pleas for new bats and gloves to be left under the Christmas tree!

Early figures indicate that due to what has been Perth’s driest winter, termite damage will be at an all-time high this season. Local pest manager Daniel Bremer of SWATAPEST explains that “late rains last year meant termites were largely content to forage in gardens/bush where both food and water were easily accessible.

This year we are finding termite damage inside homes as termites desperately search for water.”

The top three things that you can do to prevent termite attacks are: 1. Eliminate as much moisture in and around the home as possible. Moisture is a necessary environmental condition for termites (more important than timber), so get rid of any damp areas in and around your home; plumb hot water and air conditioning overflows several meters from your external walls, fix any dripping taps or leaks, use appropriate hose fittings, and tightly turn off all faucets.

2. Move garden beds away from your external walls.

As timber-mulch decays it releases CO2, the ultimate attractant for termites, and reticulation further attracts termites to the wet soil.

3. Store firewood away from your home.

Chopped firewood provides termites with an ideal, often undisturbed food source.

Daniel also said that the worst thing any homeowner can do when they find termites is to self-treat them. “With as many as 5 million termites in the nest, killing a couple hundred or even a thousand is going to be of little help.

The best thing to do is to leave the termites undisturbed; put the timber back as you found it, cover the area and call a professional, because there is no over-the-counter product that will eliminate the entire termite colony.

If we know where the termites are (not where they have been) we have the greatest chance of eliminating the problem, which will save the homeowner headaches and money”.

Students sow sunflower seeds to support a worthy cause While most students will put school to the backs of their minds during the summer holidays, some from John Wollaston Anglican Community School will be bursting to return in 2011, hoping to see a splash of sunflowers in the garden of the Learning Enrichment Centre.

Children from across each year group planted sunflower seedlings on Friday 3 December, donating loose change in order to participate and raising nearly $300 for not-for-profit group Therapy Focus.

Therapy Focus provides support services for 2500 young people across Perth who have a disability or learning disadvantage, using a sunflower as its mascot.

The organisation created the Symphony of Sunflower initiative last year to encourage everyone to plant seedlings in recognition of the inclusion of children with disabilities in the community.

Money raised goes towards the ‘Help a Child to Grow Fund’ which provides equipment, educational activities, resources and therapy services for children and families in need.

“At John Wollaston we foster an inclusive education model so we urged all students to participate in Symphony of Sunflowers, whether or not they could make a donation,” Principal Anne Ford said.

“The generosity of our students was overwhelming – everyone who visited the Learning Enrichment Centre garden was excited and keen to show their support.

“They all knew what the day was about and that was very touching.

“The event also fell on International Day of People with Disability, which tied in nicely.”

Soil, mulch and recycled materials such as timber and metal for the garden beds were donated by the City of Armadale’s Drop ‘N’ Shop Reuse Centre, which educates the public about the environment and aims to return recyclable items to the community instead of landfill.

Drop ‘N’ Shop Supervisor Stuart Merriman visited the School to plan the garden layout while Design and Technology teacher George Sutherland and his Year 11 and 12 students assembled the garden beds in the workshop.

“We have received incredible support from staff and students and raised $285.90 for Therapy Focus, which far exceeded our expectations at this busy and expensive time of year,” Ms Ford said.

The Learning Enrichment Centre staff hopes to organise a morning tea celebration in Term 1 2011, with the sunflowers in full bloom, to thank supporters and fundraisers.

With the Christmas break over, we are now back in full swing on the bowling greens. WA Bowls Pennants has resumed with our club scoring impressive wins in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions. We are hopeful of reaching the finals in at least one of our divisions in each of these competitions. Especially heartening is the injection of some new players into our teams with some new members joining us mid-season. It was great to see one of our newer members recently enjoying success in the Men’s Triples Championship. Glenn Lynch teamed up with Ric Shinnick and Ernie Dean to take out the championship event.

A tribute to Vincent (Vin) Sala Tenna, who passed away on January 2nd 2011

Vin was born in 1922 in the North of Italy. At only 10 months of age, he contracted polio. His mother was advised by specialists that a warmer climate would do him good, so she took Vin and his older sister Rose to Kalgoorlie in Australia, where her husband was working on the wood line. In 1926 the family moved to Pickering Brook, where Vin’s father worked at Barton’s Mill in the timber industry and purchased land in Sala Road. Vin’s son Mitch now lives on the original property.

Vin’s early years were not easy with the affliction of polio, but he had an incredible thirst for knowledge, an indomitable spirit and an incredible way of telling stories. Finally, he also had the gift of being able to improvise in a situation when needed. He studied mechanics before becoming a qualified Engineer and Accountant, all while he also worked the family orchard. Vin was involved in many committees while on the orchard, from the fruit shippers to The Fruit Canning Committee. He was even President of the Karragullen and Pickering Brook Fruit Growers Association.

He was a pioneer of the irrigation system, and he developed and made available his unique type of irrigation to orchards in his area.

This is the first in a series of calendars following the development of the Pickering Brook district from its Mill Town’s days, Railway’s and Agricultural enterprises.

By the 1970’s Vin became focussed on the supply and installation of irrigation systems on a larger scale; state-wide.

In 1974 he became a Councillor for the East Ward in Kalamunda Shire and remained so for 9 years.

Vin had a tremendous love and respect of the area, and wanted to serve the people around him, be loyal to the Council, and conserve the East Ward. Vin was one of the original members of the Pickering Brook Heritage Group, who valued and saw the need to preserve the identity and pioneer spirit of this area.

His greatest love was his patient and understanding wife Millie, with whom he had 5 children, Mitch, Andrew, Rosemary, Debbie and Susan. They will all give testimony to his love of telling a good story and his fabulous spaghetti meals which became a regular occurrence at home. He was a man who loved the dictionary for its value in his quest for knowledge. He had a passion for deep water fishing which he enjoyed with friends. Vin was very much loved by his family, his friends, and his community. He will be dearly missed.

The only other time I have ever been in Vietnam in the month of October was during my Government sponsored junket of 1968.
