Fiona Newland – EDITOR/PUBLISHER This month’s Valley Reporter coincides with the annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event. Please show your support by attending our local event that’s being hosted at the Roleystone Hall on Thursday 26th May, from 9:30am to 11:30am. Help raise some much needed money towards the fight against cancer.

Speaking of events, why not come along and be inspired by “2 Amazing Women - 2 Amazing Stories”, which is being held in the Pink Book Club at the Seville Grove library.

It’s an evening of wine, nibbles and chatter whilst you draw the inspiration from the very different but very motivational stories of two lovely ladies. For further details see the full story on page 5.

I recently attended a meeting with other members of the community, to discuss the concept of starting a Men’s Community Shed in Roleystone. The Australian’s Men’s Shed Association was formed

in 2007, and since then has had over five hundred Men’s Sheds registered. To find out why, read all about it on page 16.

The winners of the Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre Photography Competition have been finalised. All winning entries are now on display in Family Centre for Neighbourhood House Week. Why not go in for a cuppa and a look at the amazing entries.

The Araluen Botanic Park is once again asking for volunteers to assist in the tulip bulb planting process. Volunteers are all made very welcome by the warm and friendly staff at Araluen Botanic Park. Participants also get to enjoy free entry, a complimentary morning tea and a special invitation to return in the spring.

What could be better than to enjoy a few hours of casual gardening? If you want to register, turn to page 26 for further details.

The Roleystone Tee-ball and Baseball Club are trying a new method of fund raising with the ever popular Entertainment Books. Dear valued customers, as of Friday the 1st of July 2011 the Roleystone Deli and General Store will become the Roleystone Lunchbar and Takeaways.

We can expect a few minor cosmetic changes, as well as some menu adjustments. There will be changes to the trading hours, and we will not be open Sundays. The new trading hours will be Monday to Friday 6:00am to 3:30pm and 6:30am to 3:30pm Saturdays.

The kitchen will be closed as of 2.30pm everyday. We will not be open on Public holidays, Easter holidays and Christmas holidays. Dates will be confirmed later.

We apologise if this causes any inconvenience. It is in our best interest to do this, and the decision has not been made lightly. It has been in the pipeline now for several months, and due to the lack of deli items that have been sold, we believe it’s our best option.

The same great food, great service and friendly smiles will still be here, so we look forward to seeing you before and after the transition.

On Friday 6th of May, I held “Cash For Ashes”, a benefit gig to help raise money for the Roleystone Fires. The night was a great success, as we raised just over $2000, which will be donated to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Fund. It is so wonderful to see people generously giving to help others who have been affected by disaster. The people in the Roleystone community have shown great personal strength and have selflessly given support to others as well. Thank you to all who put their efforts into organising the night, and making the whole thing possible.

Volunteers in the City of Armadale recently attended a free event hosted by the City’s Armadale Volunteer Services and Active Clubs program to celebrate National Volunteer Week.

Phoebe McIndoe, the 2010 “Little Telethon Star” and Year 5 student at Pioneer Village School in Armadale was the guest speaker for the event. Phoebe is a delightful young lady who suffers from a rare facial and neck condition known as cystic hygroma. In her presentation she proudly spoke about the many volunteers who have made a difference in her life.

Other speakers for the event were Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds, Armadale Volunteer Services Coordinator Wendy Stanley and Club Development Officer Anthony Minchin.

Volunteers aren’t just desirable, for many organisations volunteers are vital to their long-term success and sustainability. The wonderful thing about volunteering is that members of our community directly benefit from it.

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s annual celebration and recognition of the importance of volunteers.

This particular event was supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation and Department for Communities.

Following this, the site will be advertised by a State Government chosen business to seek expressions of interest for sale of the property. The successful bidder will then submit their plan for the site to the City, with all requirements identified in the rezoning approval included for consideration. If all goes well we are told that we could see the first building on site within 2 years.

All plants are priced at $3 each.

Next Field Day On the 12th of June, we will have a revegetation field day between 9.00am and 12.00noon at the Windsor Reserve in Windsor Road, Roleystone (Corner of Leschenaultia Street).

Turn right into Windsor Road from Brookton Highway opposite Borrello Park. Morning tea will be provided, and new volunteers are always welcome.

ROLEY KIDS AT ROTTO Late last term the year 7 students from Roleystone DHS went to Rottnest for their annual camp. Once there, students were immersed in a wide variety of activities based on the unique environment which Rottnest Island provides. Students learnt about the different types of plant and marine life found at Rottnest, and the rich history of the island, including the early settlement. The kids also got to explore the WW2 gun battery on the island. In between the students swam and snorkelled at some of the beautiful

bays, rode bikes near and far, completed a team fact-finding mission and attempted to catch fish on the jetty at night. The camp was a huge success and the students behaviour was excellent. Given that it was a very energetic camp, all students ate and slept very well, especially on Friday afternoon.

Many thanks to all the staff who attended, who made it possible for the local students to explore a whole new world. Thanks again, I can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Perth Hills burning program resumes The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) has resumed its prescribed burning program in the Perth Hills after record low winter rainfall and continuing dry conditions over spring and summer.

Environment Minister Bill Marmion said last week’s rain meant conditions were now safe for a series of small but strategically important burns to be undertaken on DEC-managed land.

More broadscale burning in forest areas further away from townsites would begin following additional rain.

“Areas across the Perth Hills received up to 40mm of rain last week, which has increased the soil moisture and meant fine fuels such as leaves and twigs can be burned safely under prescribed conditions,” Mr Marmion said.

“DEC’s priority burns are within regional parks in areas near Roleystone, Bedfordale, Gosnells and in Wungong Regional Park, south-east of Armadale.

“The department completed one burn last Saturday over 22 hectares in Wungong Regional Park near Roleystone, to create a strategic buffer to protect private property south of the area burnt out in the bushfire last February.”

The Minister said depending on weather conditions, DEC had also scheduled burns in regional parks and national parks in and around the Kalamunda townsite.

DEC’s Perth Hills District, which extends along the Darling Scarp from Moore River to south of Dwellingup, had a backlog of prescribed burns because of low rainfall and smoke management issues.

“Most of these burns are comparatively small areas but they often adjoin private property and therefore are strategically important in reducing the intensity of bushfires and their potential impacts on homes and community assets,” Mr Marmion said.

“However, larger scale prescribed burns further away from communities are also important in terms of managing and reducing the impact of bushfires, including through reducing the potential for bushfires to ‘spot’ ahead of the main fire front.”

DEC will also carry out a number of prescribed burns in jarrah-banksia woodlands and in the pine plantations north of Wanneroo.

The Minister said smoke from the burns would be visible and there may be some short-term impact over the metropolitan area as DEC sought to take advantage of favourable wind conditions.

Make some noise about proposed regulations

Rifle and pistol clubs are not the only affected parties. All motor sport venues will also be affected by these proposed regulation changes if the venue is used for motor vehicle or motor vessel racing.

These activities are close to the community’s heart and Mr Simpson believes noise management should remain within the jurisdiction of the Department of Environment and Conservation a body with the resources and impartiality to properly respond to noise matters.

Further to this Mr Simpson is calling on the Department to include in the noise exemptions gas-guns operated on working orchards to deter pest animals. These gasguns are an environmentally friendly solution that hills orchardists prefer to use to scare away cockatoos and galahs’. Unfortunately they are not exempt from noise regulations and as a result some orchardists have been fined in the past.

An exemption within regulation 12 of the noise regulations would allow orchardists to utilise these gas-guns without fear of prosecution by councils or complaints from vexatious neighbours who have no knowledge of the birdlife these gas-guns save.

Film Students to Work on Emotional Intelligence

‘Count Me In’ Film Competition As a part of Disability Awareness Week (28 November–3 December 2011), the Disabilities Services Commission is running a competition for school students in years 8, 9 and 10.

Students are invited to create a short film which captures the high school experience, from the perspective of a student with disability. The short film competition will provide an opportunity for students with (and without) disabilities to document and showcase their unique journey from primary to high school. This may include an account of their friendships, academic achievements, any challenges they have faced, future goals and ambitions, and examples of inclusivity in the school. The winner’s school will be awarded $5000 in prize money, and the winning student (or student group) will receive a total of $1000 in prize money. There will be two runner-up prizes of $500 each.

The winning entry will be announced and showcased at the “Count Me In” Awards, held on 1st December 2011 at the Burswood Entertainment Complex. The winning school will be presented with a cheque the following week at the school. Further public viewing and promotion opportunities will be explored. Thanks to the vigilant ears and eyes of a Roleystone resident, the Valley Reporter was made aware of the accident that occurred at the Peet Road bus shelter on Good Friday. At around 2am of that morning, a car (probably traveling at high speed) came around the bend in Peet Road, lost control and collided with the bus shelter, causing it to come tumbling down. The car spun around, coming to a halt in loose gravel just metres away from the front entrance of a Roleystone residence. Thankfully, no one was injured and the car was immediately towed away.

I recently attended a meeting held at the Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre to discuss the concept of starting a Men’s Community Shed in Roleystone. There was quite an abundance of people in attendance (especially for a Wednesday night), and I must say that I felt a little out of place with only 3 women present.

The Australian Men’s Shed Association was established in 2007 to represent, support and promote the Mens Shed Movement and to act as a central hub for information exchange. With over five-hundred Men’s Sheds registered, AMSA it is now the largest Association in Australia with a focus on male health and well-being.

Having heard about the Men’s Shed’s philosophy, and the great work that has been achieved because of it, I was very keen to find out more. I for one was very interested in the idea of my husband and two sons being able to utilise the services of a community shed, where they can enjoy the spirit of mateship, spend time just being guys, and have some fun tinkering away with things.

Everyone who attended was able to hear first-hand from the Fremantle Men’s Community Shed convenor Bill Johnstone, as well as their workshop and community programs coordinator Alan Gowland. Both gentlemen described to us how they first got started, the trials and tribulations that they overcame along the way, the kinds of activities their shed has undertaken, and the projects they have been involved.

We also got some great tips! All of this was very positively received by everyone in the room.

Despite the many questions our group had, we got just as many answers to give us greater insight into this endeavour. For example: What age do you have to be to join the Shed? Shed members range in age from 6 to 96. There really is no age barrier.

Who can join the Shed? Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life - the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and they would like something meaningful to do with that time. All men are free to join.

What are the opening hours of a Shed? All sheds have unique opening hours, depending on the needs of the community, the members, and the Shed’s individual capacities.

What do people do in the Shed?

Woodwork and metal work are the most common Shed activities, but what you do in your Shed is limited only by your imagination.

How much does it cost to join a Shed? Most Sheds have a small yearly fee, which like the opening hours, may vary between communities.

Who should you look to in your Shed? A good Men’s Shed will have a coordinator who has both the technical and social skills to manage a safe and happy environment where men are welcome to work on projects of their choice in their own time.

What is the main purpose of a Shed?

Men’s Sheds endeavour to undo what our government and general society has consistently ignored, by creating real change in these men’s lives. The Men’s Shed movement is one of the most powerful tools we have in helping men to once again feel like the valuable members of our community that they are.

What we hope to achieve by having our very own Men’s Community Shed in Roleystone was the focus of our final discussion before we finished the meeting. I was very impressed by how there was no room for people to be judgemental, how everyone had the freedom to express themselves fully, and how (if we have our own Shed), men will be able to come and go freely, sharing their ideas and skills in their own comforting, relaxed space. I would like to hear what other readers have to say about the Men’s Shed idea for Roleystone, as well what they can tell us about other Men’s Sheds they’ve come across before, and whether or not they’ve heard about the wonderful projects that other Men’s Sheds have undertaken.

Requirement of 18,000 skilled workers within the next 18 months: There is currently $260 billion of mining projects under way in the Pilbara Region requiring an added workforce of 18,000 people within the next 18 months.

I can’t imagine the government not supporting in some way an increased effort to have an adequate skilled workforce (plus families) in place by this time, whether by migration within Australia or immigration, as the consequences of a slowdown in production in the Pilbara/mining companies failing to deliver on promised exporting deadlines due to lack of skilled labour, may have our trading partners looking for suppliers elsewhere.

On the ground in the southern hills we are getting multiple enquiries every week from mining families wanting to move into the area who are seeking a safe environment to raise their families, large lots of land and easy/timely access to the domestic airport.

(Migration into Western Australia from other Australian states as per ABS for the year 2008/2009 (most recent data) shows a total of 4825 people – this figure is mooted to have been increasing year by year).

Do we stay or go? Evacuation or protect in place Fire Agencies urge residents to consider whether they will evacuate or stay and protect their properties in the early stages of the potential bushfire threat. In support of this approach a general evaluation by individuals should even be considered. An objective, realistic and responsible attitude needs to prevail if you are to make a balanced decision. Many factors need to be considered. You may feel that you will be able to implement many of the recommendations and have sufficient confidence to protect your property. A term that describes to stay and fight the incident is ‘protect in place’.

You may wish to evacuate the children, older relatives, sick, infirm, livestock and pets.

Special consideration needs be made for those people that have respiratory problems that could be complicated by smoke. Evaluate whether those with heart problems or any other medical conditions would be strong enough to withstand the stress of staying in the area. To reiterate, these considerations should be done well before the bushfire presents its risk not only to your home but also to the intended escape route.

Understand that to evacuate late is to place yourself and others in jeopardy.

Roads become smoky. Some people may be panicking. Roads could be busy with responding emergency service vehicles and personnel on foot.

Intended escape routes may be closed and those evacuating may be forced to use roads that they are unfamiliar with. These factors can and have in the past been responsible for the deaths of evacuees and firefighters.

WANTED: Saturday Canteen Manager for Junior Footy Club The Roleystone Junior Football Club urgently requires a Canteen Manager to operate its canteen on Saturdays during the 2011 Season. The person/s would be responsible for cooking and supervising parent helpers, opening and closing the canteen and clean-up at the end of the day. The position is a voluntary one, and can be shared by two or more people.

If no one comes forward to help out the club, then the canteen will not be open on Saturdays during the 2011 season. This will affect the club financially as the canteen generates thousands of dollars each season. Without that money, fees could rise substantially next year.

CoA Bushfire Recovery Update: LMDRF funds and demolition progress

Almost three months after the destructive Roleystone-Kelmscott bushfire, recovery and relief services for those directly affected are continuing to be rolled out.

Of the $2.98 million donated by the community and business to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund (LMDRF) Perth Hills Bushfire Appeal, $1.94 million has already been disbursed to 90 applicants who suffered full or partial damage to their properties.

Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said the generosity and compassion of donors was greatly appreciated.

“Everyone from mums and dads, kids with their pocket money, pensioners, families, businesses, corporate groups and those who have passed the hat around have jointly done a magnificent job of fundraising for people devastated by the fire,” Cr Reynolds said.

“We are very pleased to report that a significant percentage of the LMDRF funds have been promptly disbursed, providing families with financial assistance at a very difficult time.”

Donations can still be made to the LMDRF Perth Hills Bushfire Appeal via the website www.appealswa.org.au.

All monies collected will continue to be distributed to those who have been affected by the fire. Demolition and clean-up works being coordinated by the City of Armadale are progressing well, with more than half of the 69 totally destroyed homes completed.

Costs associated with demolition are being covered by the WA Natural Disaster Relief

and Recovery Arrangements (WANDRRA) fund.

“We lobbied hard to receive this additional funding through WANDRRA due to the high number of totally or partially destroyed homes thought to contain asbestos or CCA (treated pine),” Cr Reynolds said.

“Relieving home owners of this financial burden and employing expert professional contractors to undertake the works is beneficial for everyone. We thank WANDRRA sincerely for assisting us with this important project.

“At this stage we are on track for demolitions of destroyed homes to be finished by the end of May, or early June, depending on weather conditions.

“The removal of the burnt materials is an important psychological milestone that will allow people to get on with planning and rebuilding their new homes.”

The City of Armadale, in its capacity as bushfire recovery coordinator, has led the way in clean-up and community support activities. So far, the City has: spent almost $400,000 on removal of dead and dangerous trees, collected about 200 skip bins of rubbish, mulched 5,000 cubic metres of charred green waste, spent $26,000 on waste removal, distributed more than 10,000 community update flyers, received and coordinated more than 1,200 public offers of assistance and had up to 100 staff members working on bushfire recovery operations.

Hip hop discovery for young men Not many young men can claim they’ve made a music video and three music tracks before they turn 20 but that’s exactly what eight boys have done thanks to a local hip hop program.

The program, which was a partnership between the City of Gosnells, Centrecare and the Community Arts Network of Western Australia, offered the young men a new way to learn skills and express their creativity. Over the past 10 weeks, the teens have been working with MC Optamus from renowned Perth hip hop outfit Downsyde and WA Young Filmmaker of the Year Mat de Koning on the recordings.

Their efforts will go public on Saturday 21 May with a free gig at Amherst Village Community Centre’s SoundLab@Amherst from 12noon to 3pm. The venue was built by the City in 2009 to provide young people with a space to feel confident and get involved in community activities in their own way and it proved to be an ideal place for the program.

Mentoring was a key element of the program’s success and contributions by the program partners and artists enabled the boys to not only write lyrics and record music but also learn filmmaking principles and work autonomously in a collaborative environment.

As a result of this, Pat Hart has kindly investigated the City of Armadale’s current public open space and reserves regulations. Pat wishes to remind people of their obligations while using public reserves.

The shared use of public reserves and open space areas by dog owners and nondog owners is a difficult issue for the local authorities to resolve, as the activities of both groups are not always compatible. A debated issue is whether dogs should have restricted or unrestricted access to public open spaces. It is important that a balanced use of public open spaces and reserves between the two groups can be achieved.

The use of public open space and reserves should meet the needs of responsible dog owners to exercise their dogs, as well as the rights of groups to engage in activities without being harassed by uncontrolled dogs. When a dual-use reserve such as Cross Park is being used for sporting, and other authorised activities, it should not be used as an off-leash dog exercise area.

It must be recognised that some residents do not like dogs, and would prefer to have reserves and public open space where dogs are not permitted. One of the challenges faced by Council is to meet the needs of these residents, without heavily restricting the activities and rights of dogs and their owners. One option usually suggested is to declare certain areas within the district as “dog free”.

Dog owners need to be extremely vigilant when using Council reserves, and other open space areas designated as “Dog Exercise Areas”, where dogs are not physically restrained. Dog attacks are considered to

Securing camping accommodation at Lane Poole Reserve, one of Western Australia’s most popular campgrounds, can now be done at the click of a button, with the launch of a new online booking system.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) Campgrounds website, www.dec.wa.gov.au/campgrounds, allows visitors to Lane Poole Reserve, 100km south of Perth, to easily secure a camping spot during peak times.

DEC Parks and Visitor Services officer Elisa Skillen said the website was a convenient way for people to organise their visits throughout the year.

“The new online booking system enables people to plan their holiday in advance and will help ease the pressure of high seasonal demand at popular camp sites,” she said.

“At the moment, the booking system only applies to camp sites at Stringers, Yarragil, Tony’s Bend, Charlie’s Flat and Chuditch. The other sites in Lane Poole Reserve are still operating on a first-come basis.

“However, we are planning to add other camp sites to the system in the coming months.”

Ms Skillen was confident that the online booking system would help reduce the frustration which was often expressed by visitors who drove long distances and found they were unable to secure a camp site for the night at Lane

Poole Reserve.

“There are so many wonderful camping experiences to be had in our very own backyard, and this includes the opportunity to go white-water rafting in the middle of stunning jarrah forest at Lane Poole Reserve, so it’s great that we can now make these easily available for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

“Over the past few months, Lane Poole Reserve rangers have been handing out brochures to visitors to advise them of the new system. This has proved very effective as all camp sites available through the online booking system were quickly snapped up for Easter.”

When I attempt to converse with the locals in Vietnamese, I’m sure the people are inwardly groaning at my awful pronunciation, but if a foreigner is prepared to have a go, the Vietnamese people are happy to help. Of course, the locals are always eager to improve their Tieng Anh (English language), so it’s usually a win-win situation. Many people have asked me to help with their English so I say to them “If I help you with your Tieng Anh, you should help me with my Tieng Viet”. It’s an “East meets West” version of the classic “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” scenario, and it usually works out well. Oops!

English have become a dying language spoken by a dwindling number of people?

Back in the real world, the pretty waitress has placed my coffee on the table. “Cám on” (Thank you) I say to her. In reply she says “Không có chi” (You’re welcome).

To most Westerners, the Vietnamese language (Tieng Viet) is both strange and familiar. Familiar because the letters are almost identical to the western alphabet, but strange due to the added complication of those squiggly bits on top or underneath some letters.

Vietnamese has a 29 letter phonetic alphabet. It includes all the letters of the English alphabet except for “F”, “J”, “W” and “Z”. It also includes a few diacriticladen letters of its own. The Vietnamese alphabet is as follows:

“It sure sounds like Double Dutch to me” “Ban có muon cà phê nóng hoac lanh?”, the young pretty waitress asked me.

I’d been strolling around Dà Nang in Vietnam and felt the need for a strong cup of coffee.

I entered one of the numerous coffee shops in the city and, without thinking, I just ordered a cup of coffee. I should have expected further inquiry, since even in Australia the waitress needs more information than just “coffee, please?”

Still, I’m sure my face must have resembled a stunned mullet (or should that be a comatose catfish in Vietnam?) when the waitress asked me her question.

She rolled her eyes as she replied to my request for a repeat of her question.

“Nóng hoac lanh?”.

The penny drops! A big cheesy smile breaks across my face as I finally get what she’s asking me - do I want my coffee hot or cold?

Very sheepishly, I ask her for a Cà phê sua dá (coffee with milk and ice). She nods her head approvingly.

Hundreds of centuries ago, when our primitive ancestors first crawled out of the primordial mud and uttered our first word “Ugg”, who would have thought that one day in the far future our civilisation would boast thousands of different languages and dialects. Most tribes, regional groups and countries have developed and refined their own method of verbal communication. However I must confess I suspect that those born north of Hadrian’s Wall haven’t developed much further than the initial “Ugg”.

In the late 19th century, scholars discussed the concept of an international language to overcome the limitations of verbal communication between people of different cultures and nationalities.

In 1887 Dr Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof, a Russian-Jewish ophthalmologist published the first book describing Esperanto, the “Unua Libro”.

Zamenhof’s goal was to create an easyto-learn and politically neutral language that would serve as a universal second language to foster peace and international understanding. However, Esperanto never really caught on as it was supposed to, and eventually became superfluous thanks to the rise of an American bloke called Bill Gates, who opened a small software development company in the garage of his parents’ house. The reason why Esperanto never achieved its lofty goals is mainly due to Mr Gates’ worldwide-selling products being programmed in English.

I often wonder what the result would have been if the world’s most popular computer operating system had been designed by Chen Xu Guan from Shanghai or Ajeet Subramanium from Mumbai. Would the world have needed to learn and speak Mandarin or Hindi so that transnational business could exist and flourish? Would

Celebrating Library & Information Week: “We find stuff!”

Ask librarians for help and inevitably they know exactly where to find what you want.

It is this quality that will be celebrated from Monday 23 to Friday 27 May during Australian Library and Information Week, with the light-hearted theme “We find stuff!”

According to the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the nation-wide • INSTALLATIONS • SERVICES • REPAIRS week of events will showcase the role of libraries in the community.

Libraries find “stuff”, help with “stuff” and do “stuff” for Australians every day.

Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said the City of Armadale’s Library Service will join in the celebrations with behind the scenes tours for library members and other fun activities.

“We will be running some courses at Armadale Library on the use of the catalogue and online databases to assist library members ‘find stuff’ themselves,” Cr Reynolds said.

“There will also be National Simultaneous Storytime at Armadale Library at 11am on Wednesday 25 May and an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser at Seville Grove Library on Friday 27 May. “Armadale Councillors will have the chance to explore how our libraries Grab a partner and compete against other operate by ‘becoming a librarian’ and working behind the library desk for pairs in the ultimate test of sporting ability. a while.

Communications coming to Forrestdale Business Park The Forrestdale Business Park is finally set to get telephone and internet services following a campaign by Canning MHR Don Randall to have telecommunications delivered to the commercial estate. Mr Randall said there was a strong representation on the matter both by himself and the City of Armadale and after not getting much sense out of the Telstra state office, Mr Randall took action and wrote to Telstra chief executive, David Thodey.

“Mr Thodey has informed me works to install PSTN and broadband services – which would use copper infrastructure – are underway at the Forrestdale Business Park and should be completed within a few weeks,” he said.

“The delays have been largely due to the roll‐out of the NBN, which we won’t see completed for about 10 years or more. Telstra appear, and would expectedly be, reluctant to install copper infrastructure as it will eventually be replaced by NBN Co’s fibre optic cabling.

I do think we will see more of these interim type installations by Telstra in the coming years.

“Jeremy Coleman at Tilling Timbers will be able to get rid of his own $36,000 make do telecommunications set up and Aquatec can scrap their $180,000 plans to extend Amcom lines used by the police and Armadale hospital.

“Prospective buyers into the business park will now have comfort knowing they will be able to operate their business properly.”

Mr Randall said if constituents in other areas of the Canning electorate were experiencing similar problems in getting telecommunications infrastructure they should contact his office. He said people should not be expected to have sub standard – or no – telecommunications while they wait for the NBN.

Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 NEWS RELEASE KELMSCOTT ARMED ROBBERY Regional Investigations Unit detectives are seeking information in relation to an armed robbery in Kelmscott.

About 4.55pm on Sunday 1 May 2011 a man wearing a black balaclava and carrying a gun entered a liquor store on Albany Highway.

The man pushed over a male customer as he entered the store before pointing the gun at a female staff member and demanding cash.

He grabbed money from the till before running out of the store.

There were approximately fifteen customers throughout the store at the time of the robbery.

The offender is described as approximately 180cm tall, with a slim build.

KELMSCOTT BURGLARY and WOUNDING Detectives investigating a vicious and cowardly attack on a 71 year old Kelmscott man at his home on Friday 29 April 2011 at about 6.15pm, have released a composite image of the person responsible.

The victim was home alone when he was confronted by a man who had forced entry through the rear door. The man demanded money then cigarettes and drugs.

When the victim told him he didn’t have any of those things the man became angry and slashed the victim across the face with an unknown object.

The offence is made all the more tragic in that the offender then stole a small black and white TV, one of the victim’s limited possessions, and also the keys to the house.

Anyone with information that may assist detectives are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Recipe from Cook Like an Italian by Tobie Puttock, published by Lantern, RRP $49.95

Method Place the potato in a small saucepan and cover with water. Add a pinch of salt. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook until you can just pierce the centre of the potato with a knife. Remove from the water and refresh in cold water. Once cooled, peel the potato using a small knife and then carefully cut it into 2–3 mm slices. In a bowl, combine the eggs, milk and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Mix with a fork and then add the potato. In a 30 cm non-stick frying pan, melt the butter over a high heat, shaking the pan so the butter coats the entire surface. Once the butter is sizzling and starting to turn golden, carefully pour in the egg and potato mixture. Do not stir. Reduce the heat to very low and pick the pan up and tilt it from side to side to make sure the egg mixture is evenly spread. If using truffle paste or oil, dot it around the surface of the frittata.

As the frittata is so thin, it should set on the stovetop. If not, pop it under a grill or into a hot oven until the top has just set, but not so it becomes brown and crispy. Serve the frittata immediately with truffle as part of an antipasto.

Once again our Digital Film and Television students from Roleystone District High School excelled at our annual location shoot. The students worked in three teams. The “Repeating Lucas” team was led

by Hannah Brunton and Georgia Siroen, and the “Falling for Rebecca” team was led by Meg Batty and Meg Hutton. I would like to congratulate these leaders for the outstanding work they did with their teams.

A third smaller team was responsible for taking publicity photographs and behind the scenes footage for the other two teams. This team consisted of Xena Cain, Casey Bloomer and Mel Sandiford.

This year the students were given the opportunity to use some of the newly purchased equipment for the first time. This included using boom poles for sound capture, using a crane for filming high angle shots, and the use of digital field recording devices.

We were also fortunate enough to once again have the support of experts who volunteered their time to help our students.

We would like to acknowledge the work of these professionals: Dion Borrett, an accomplished cinematographer. He has been the Director of Photography on several short films, the most recent of which was short listed as a finalist at the 2010 Tropfest Film Festival.

Steve Hooton, a professional actor who has appeared in numerous short films and live theatre performances as well. His many years of experience in the industry have been invaluable, as have his professional hairdressing skills.

Ali Roberts, acting coach and owner of Ali Roberts Studios. Ali has over 30 years of experience in the industry, in which she has trained in Western Australia and London, and worked as an agent, actor and drama teacher. She is currently writing and producing a pilot for a children’s TV series.

Lys Tickner, mother and Roleystone Theatre stalwart. Lys has helped out on previous New Norcia programs, and has brought with her a wealth of drama experience from her involvement with the Roleystone Theatre.

Tania Worthington, film director. Tania has directed several short films, the most recent of which was short listed as a finalist at the 2010 Tropfest Film Festival. Tania is also the School Liaison officer for the Armadale Independent Film Festival.

Special thanks must go to: Tony Hewitt, for generously allowing one of our students to attend his master photography class (free of charge, no less) since it was coincidentally being held at the same time as our camp. Tony is a Grand Master of Photography, of the prestigious Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

Daniel Holliday, for his tireless work with our teams. Daniel was invaluable in helping and advising our students in setting up and using equipment (sound, lights and cameras) and his experience from the many projects he has completed outside of school really shone through.

Julie Pheasant, for her help at the camp. She provided assistance to both teams with art direction, special effects, and makeup. Julie also coordinated the publicity photography team, and I know she was extremely proud of her team’s work.

I would also like to thank our students for their hard work and long hours at New Norcia. This year was an even greater improvement on some very successful previous extension camps, and I was particularly impressed with our actors. What they showed this year was a much deeper understanding of what it means to act for screen. They demonstrated wonderful commitment to their roles and several of them really became the characters they portrayed. Shane Allison, Tess Clapton, Corey Damon, Mark Fraser, Alex Hamilton, Connor Knapman and Harry Weeks all had significant parts and they should feel very proud of what they achieved.

Our crews also worked very hard and I was impressed with how well they learnt to use our new equipment and solve the numerous problems that always arise on a film set. I have no doubt that several of our crew members will earn nominations for the 2011 Roley Oscars.

Finally, thanks must go to Kellie Brophy, our Indonesian teacher who also visited the camp. Keen to incorporate film into her LOTE curriculum, Kellie came to see how our film program worked on location.

I know she has some very exciting ideas in this regard, but I will leave her to reveal these when the plans are more complete. These are the words she read to the students on the final morning of the camp: “I would like to thank Mr and Mrs Pheasant and Mr Holliday for organising this amazing film camp. I have learnt so much over these past few days, not only about photography, but it also made me more aware of my own characteristics, allowing me to grow personally and look at my life and the world around in me in a new perspective. I never could have understood these everyday ‘teen dramas’ that go on and the impact these have on each of you. I’ve seen the crying, heard the ridiculous rumours, and felt the pain these cause. I’m now twice as aware of others than I was before. Being on this camp has allowed me to have the time to get to know and understand most of you. I hope the friendships that we’ve formed will continue and you’ve learnt from me as much as I have learnt from you. So thank you again for letting us take part in this mind-opening experience.”

Chatterbooks now at Armadale, Kelmscott and Seville Grove libraries Chatterbooks, which promote literacy and language skills in young children, are now available from all three City of Armadale libraries at Armadale, Kelmscott and Seville Grove.

Chatterbooks were originally developed by Seville Grove Library and an Armadale-based speech pathologist.

Now children’s therapy and support services organisation, Therapy Focus, along with Communicare, have joined in and created some new kits that can be borrowed from all City of Armadale libraries.

Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said Chatterbooks were suitable for children aged two and over.

“There are now eight titles available, including the popular kids stories ‘Where is the green sheep?’ by Mem Fox and Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’,” Cr Reynolds said.

“Each book can be read out loud by the child and/or parent and comes with a range of free, fun and creative activity sheets for parents to use at home to help develop their child’s speech and language skills.

“Chatterbooks are suitable for all families, but they’re particularly good for parents who would like to assist their child’s speech and language development or for a child on a waiting list for speech therapy.

“These kits are proving very popular – between January and March we loaned 93 Chatterbooks to City of Armadale library users.”

Healthy delicious overnight muffins Ingredients 3 eggs 1 cup veg oil (eg. canola) 1 tsp vanilla essence ½ cup pineapple juice 2 cups grated carrots ½ cup walnuts ½ cup sultanas

¼ cup shredded coconut 2 grated apples 2 cups plain flour 1 ¼ cups sugar 2 tsp bicarb (sifted) 2 tsp cinnamon powder

Method Whisk together eggs, oil, vanilla, sugar and juice.

Add remaining ingredients, stir until well combined.

Cover and place in fridge over night.

Spoon into greased muffin tins & bake for about 40 mins on 180°.

This recipe makes 12-18 muffins depending on size of muffin tray.

Tips • Be generous when spooning in mixture as it doesn’t rise much • Muffins will keep for a few days in air tight container • They freeze well • They are yummy eaten hot, straight from the oven.
