One not to be missed and I’m sure our students will enjoy
the experience. If you are finding it hard to keep the children occupied over the July school holidays why not take them along to the pantomime ‘Grumblebum and the Tricky Witch’ at the Roleystone Theatre. As many members of the local community will be aware, I, as well as many other teachers, were de-registered by the WA College of Teaching because of missing paperwork. As a consequence, I was compelled to complete a new membership application and pay more fees. I am now registered again and look forward to resuming my duties at Roleystone District High School. As you can imagine, this has been a very stressful time for my family and also my colleagues back at school. It is my sincere hope that all those other teachers in both the public and private school systems who have had their registration cancelled over paperwork issues can have their cases resolved as quickly. I have been overwhelmed with the support I have received. I would like to thank: my colleagues at Roleystone District High School, parents, students and community members who emailed, phoned or ‘face-booked’ their support, The Valley Reporter and the Roleystone Courier, other media, particularly the ABC, 6PR and the West Australian, The State School Teachers Union (WA), The Department of Education, WA Secondary Schools Executive Association. I would also like to thank the following Members of Parliament and their electoral

The demolition of the 38-year-old original pavilion
Perth Glory and Western Warriors stars came out to play at the City of Armadale’s new, state-of-the-art $5 million sports facility at Frye Park in Kelmscott. Joining the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Terry Waldron, Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds and young students from nearby Clifton Hills Primary School for the official launch on Wednesday 8 June were Glory captain Jacob Burns, teammate Victor Sikora and emerging Warriors cricketer Jon Clifton. The sports stars and Mr Waldron were keen to test the new playing surface of the upgraded facility by kicking soccer balls and practising cricket skills with the school children. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds and Mr Waldron formally opened Frye Park in a short ceremony also attended by community members, local sporting clubs, politicians, Football West representatives, Department of Sport and Recreation and the City of Armadale. Cr Reynolds said the completion of the Frye Park redevelopment was a great milestone for the local community and the City. “Several months ago many members of our community were directly affected by the destruction and heartache of the February bushfire, so this is a major step forward for all of us,” Cr Reynolds said.
“The redevelopment of Frye Park has been a big project for us – it is one of the most heavily-used active sporting reserves in the City of Armadale and it is now a modern, practical facility with a state-of-the-art irrigation system designed to maximise water efficiency. “It will be utilised by thousands of sporting club members and casual visitors and the pavilion will provide a high quality venue for community functions and events. “Who knows? A future Perth Glory or Western Warriors player could easily be nurtured on the playing fields of Frye Park.”

The Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade Cadet Unit has seen an influx of new members in recent times and with many of the older cadets moving up to the senior ranks over the next twelve months the influx has been timely. The unit meets on Tuesday nights 6.30pm 8.30pm at the Roleystone Station and is under the watchful eye of Noel and
Matt Plowman as well as Bob Littman. Cadets learn how to use all the equipment on the fire trucks and light tankers as well as using two-way radio’s, time is also spent in the classroom doing theory sessions. Once the Cadets reach the age of 16 they are put on a crew with the senior brigade members but are still welcome to attend
Cadets on a Tuesday night and pass on what they have learnt to the younger cadet’s, however once they reach the age of 17 they graduate from the Cadet unit completely. If you would like to know more about the Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade Cadet Unit please call Matt Plowman on 0407 509 128.

testimoniAl “Thank You!” would have to be the first words that come to mind in regards to Maggie and Jo. Two of a kind, whose hard work and perserverance enables them to achieve anything that they put their minds to. I had never purchased or even placed an offer on a home before and here I was, deciding at the last minute to buy a property just before I was to board a plane for work and disappear for 2 weeks! Yet, shortly before flying off, I managed to sign documents, place an offer and then (only 2 hours later, as I was hopping off the plane) receiving the awesome news that my offer had been accepted…. that’s how quickly they work! Whilst I was away, Maggie and Jo kept in contact with me and diligently worked to get everything sorted.

Budget time. The City of Armadale is looking at its budget again. Each year the budget is reviewed and incorporated into the City’s15 year plan (http://www.armadale. wa.gov.au/Home/Publications/Strategic_ Plan). The City’s 15 year plan is a budget that stretches 15 years and includes the dayto-day business as well as “key projects and strategies”. Projects include the Abbey road realignment, Armadale Youth Activity Area, Aquatic Centre upgrades, New Civic Centre, Armadale District Hall upgrade, Cultural/Performing Arts Centre, Equestrian facilities upgrades, Golf course redevelopment, Bakers House refurbishment, Frye Park redevelopment, Kelmscott Library relocation, Piara Waters North and South and Hilbert and Hilbert West Community/Sport facilities and Wungong recreational facility. Most of the projects are City-focused to improve Armadale as a whole. There are also several projects specific for the new residential development areas to the west in the Forrestdale region. This area is expanding rapidly as per the State Government’s rezoning of the rural land to urban and the need for many new sport and community facilities in such a short time frame is a large burden on the City. These projects are however also subsidized with developer contributions and State Government grants. Roleystone residents may benefit from the City focused projects depending on interests
and social activities, most notably the Frye Park redevelopment which is now the closest large modern sports centre. Rates have been increased each year by 1% to cover these projects as well as by the “Local Government Cost Index”(LGCI). This index is generated by the Western Australian Local Government Association and takes into account the Wage price index, road and nonresidential construction costs and the consumer price index (CPI). This year the LGCI is forecast at 4.5%. In addition to these the rates in the last two years have also included 1% increases to cover the increased electricity costs that were to double over the last three years increasing streetlighting costs significantly. The City’s budget deliberations have been delayed this year due to the bushfires and the loss of one of the Council buildings. The budget is scheduled for adoption in August. Cr. Caroline Wielinga.

‘Government has failed balancing act’ “The debate over live cattle exports has turned into hysteria and the Government has gone too far towards a knee jerk reaction,” Canning MHR Don Randall said about the Gillard Labor Government’s actions to temporarily suspend all live animal exports to Indonesia. “My understanding is that a lot of cattle was not going to the abattoirs with poor practices,” he said. “Exporters shouldn’t be punished as a whole for the poor practices of certain abattoirs. “Like all Australians, I have been deeply affected by the images shown on the recent Four Corners episode and I completely understand the need for assurance that our animals are being treated humanely. “It is a good thing that these matters are being debated; and it is a good thing Australia can take a strong hand, and that we have control of our cattle. “But the Government now needs to move swiftly to ensure the issues are addressed because our local farmers need a
secure future. “In my electorate I have cattle farmers that consider any cruelty to animals to be unacceptable but they are also very concerned about their farming futures. “Mark Mounsey of Yackaboon Grazing in Quindanning has spent 65 years on cattle farms. He said he hasn’t made a profit in five years and actions like the Government’s knee jerk reaction could force bankruptcy. “Another cattle farmer who lives in the electorate, and owns a station in Koorda north-east of Perth, was appalled at the Four Corners footage and said animal welfare is vital to his industry. He too wants to see the Government act quickly to ensure those abattoirs deemed as having appropriate standards can start accepting his cattle again. “Trade in this important market needs to remain both open, and humane. It’s a balancing act the current Government has failed on by moving this blanket ban.”

We are renting a house in Araluen, looking for him up here is like looking for a needle in a haystack. We are hoping that someone may have found him. He is very friendly and doesn’t bite. If anyone has seen him please call Scott on 0401 135 725.

Armadale Toastmaster Wins Prestigious Outstanding Toastmaster Award David Nicholas, President of the Armadale Toastmasters Club, was recently awarded the Jim Dinan Memorial Outstanding Toastmaster of the Year Award for District 73. This is no mean feat as District 73 is comprised of all the Toastmaster Clubs in Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. David is the first and only WA Toastmaster to be presented with this award. David has been instrumental in setting up 18 Toastmaster Clubs within Western Australia over the past 15 years as well as providing leadership and mentoring to many Toastmasters across Western Australia. Toastmasters are an international voluntary leadership and communication organisation based on public speaking. The Armadale Toastmasters Club is
a newly formed community based club devoted to helping people overcome their fear of speaking in public by learning in a supportive and positive environment. The club meets every Tuesday night 6:30pm at the Armadale Primary School, Carradine Road, Armadale. If you are interested in visiting or want to know more, visit our website at http:// armadale.toastmasterswa. net or contact Peter Law on 0408 936 623 or by email: peter_law56@ hotmail.com. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO RESPOND TO DOCUMENTS OUT FOR COMMENT
I urge all residents to consider reading public documents that are advertised for public comment from Federal, State and Local Governments. These are advertised either in local papers or the West Australian. They are always available on websites or hard copies can be requested. I know there are many, but take the time to select the ones that you believe are relevant for you, your family, community or the environment. It doesn’t take that long to read what is being
proposed and a simple response outlining concerns, questions or statements is all that is required. The comments you make are important to the final adoption of these documents. Never believe that they will be ignored. Often this advertising period will be the only chance you have to make comments on items that could impact on areas that are of importance to you and the broader community. This public comment period is your right and should be taken up. Cr. Pat Hart.

Once again the generosity and wonderful support of the Roleystone community was highlighted on Thursday the 26th May. With a change of venue for this year’s morning tea to the Roleystone Community Hall, we had over 120 people come along to enjoy a delicious morning tea. Entertainment was provided by the Roleystone Primary School Year Three Choir, instrumentalists from the Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School and our local superstar Paul Peacock. A wonderful morning of fun, entertainment, eating, raffles and auctions resulted in over $2000.00 being raised for this worthwhile cause. Once again I would like to thank all the people who came along, to all the local
businesses and families who donated food, prizes and their time to make this event so special. We are all looking forward to next year, hope to see you there. If you would like to be involved in anyway next year just drop John Bulich an email: john@roleystonerealestate. com.au.

‘PM must guarantee local jobs are safe’ Canning MHR Don Randall has written to Prime Minster Julia Gillard asking for a direct guarantee that no local jobs will be lost from the introduction of the Labor Government’s proposed carbon tax. Mr Randall specifically asked about 1,670 jobs at Alcoa’s Pinjarra refinery and 915 jobs at the Wagerup refinery. Mr Randall was concerned energy intensive trade exposed industries could be driven offshore if Australia had a tax on carbon, while other countries did not. “Even Paul Howes, national secretary from one of Australia’s biggest unions – the Australian Workers’ Union – has said the AWU would withdraw any support for
a carbon tax if one single job was lost,” he said. “This is an unnecessary, toxic tax that puts pressure on local jobs, and puts pressure on cost of living. “If Australians vote for a Coalition Government, Tony Abbott will get rid of Labor’s carbon tax. “We believe Australia should remain a country that makes things and exports to the world.” Mr Randall said the Coalition had a better way in its direct action policy that had an emissions reduction target of five per cent by 2020. He said the Coalition would spend funds gained from savings in the budget to deliver more trees, better soil and smarter technologies.

Kids Eat Fruit ift bags Thanks to City monstration & consultation and Orchards eshments Local telephone primary 9397 7899school children are crunching brackenridge village and slurping their way through fresh apples and shop 4/1 soldiers rd roleystone citrus fruit each day, thanks to an innovative City of Armadale and Hills Orchard Improvement Group (HOIG) healthy eating initiative. The City’s Fruit in Schools program, now in its second year, receives outstanding support from HOIG in providing fresh, seasonal fruit, at no cost, for hundreds of school children. The 75 HOIG orchardists located throughout Roleystone, Karragullen, Pickering Brook and Carmel kindly donate surplus fruit each week to seven schools participating in the Fruit in Schools program. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said parent volunteers collected the fruit from a central location and delivered it to the schools for
the kids to enjoy. “This is a wonderful project – it’s proving particularly beneficial for young children who are not regularly eating and taking fruit to school,” Cr Reynolds said. “The Hills Orchard Improvement Group and the individual orchardists are to be congratulated for their continuing generosity. “In addition to devising and setting up the Fruit in Schools program, the City also provides support by offering each participating school a small grant to assist with fuel expenses in collecting the fruit. “We’re delighted with the success of this initiative and the way it fits in with other school-based nutrition programs such as the Foodbank Breakfast Clubs and the Crunch & Sip program, which encourages kids to take fruit and water breaks.”

If you’re bored with holidays lolling on beaches or mooching around museums, the Australiasian Safari has the perfect antidote with its adrenalin-packed Adventure Tour. The seven-day off-road motorbike tour, from Perth through the remote northern goldfields to historic Kalgoorlie, travels parts of the same route as competitors in the Australasian Safari – the Aussie version of the infamous Dakar desert endurance event. All you need is to be a competent dirt bike or trail bike rider, love to challenge yourself, and have a spirit for adventure. Tour members get to experience the best of the Australasian Safari course and stay in the same overnight bivouac camps in outback WA, rubbing shoulders with the likes of V8 supercar legend Craig Lowndes and multi title winning moto rider Ben Grabham. The Australasian Safari, from 22 to 30 September 2011, has a wonderful camaraderie amongst its competitors, support crew and officials. Adventure Tour Road Director Andy van Kann said the last year’s tour riders were ‘blown away’ by the experience. “We have some guys returning on the Tour this year from around Australia, and others who came with us last year have taken a step up and are competing now having built their confidence. “There’s no doubt it’s a serious ride, with up to 400km on the bikes each day, but the difference with the Adventure Tour is that we finish riding in the early afternoon most days and generally end up at a spectacular and secluded spot that isn’t accessible to anyone else. “Because we plan the course for the competition and the Adventure Tour months in advance, we have the opportunity to pick out some of the most stunning spots in the remotest of places in the WA outback to take the riders. “The experience is as much about the ride as it is being part of an
international motorsport event. “We’re a pretty unique tour in that our riders get to mix with the Australasian Safari competitors who come from around the globe and around the country to test their skills against the best. Some of these guys use Safari as a testing ground and practice for Dakar, so it’s a big deal.” Details of bike requirements are available on the event website. The Adventure Tour fee of A$2800 (inc GST) provides a complete package. It includes an experienced Tour Director, tour guide and itinerary, with MA License, fees and insurance, access to the Safari Bivouac and overnight facilities, campsite fees, tourism inclusions, all fuel from bowsers or containers, transport of limited gear between overnight stops, water and emergency supplies, catering, a merchandise pack, and a ticket to the prize presentation dinner. Participants are responsible for their own bike, camping equipment (accommodation packages are available) and bike consumables. For riders coming from further afield, bike leasing and on-event servicing can be arranged through Magnus Eriksson at Outback Adventure Treks info@ outbackadventuretreks.com.au. For safety and logistical reasons, the Adventure Tour is strictly limited in rider numbers so it’s advisable to send in an Expression of Interest, available on www. australasiansafari.com.au, to secure a place. The Western Australia Government supports the Australasian Safari through Eventscorp, a division of Tourism WA. For more information on the event and to find out more about this full on extreme endurance experience, visit www. australasiansafari.com.au or follow the updates on Facebook and Twitter at @ austsafari.

On Friday, 22nd of April, I was fortunate to depart Perth airport for Bangkok, Thailand as one of 86 members of the 26th annual Quiet Lion Tour for ANZAC day. This was a fully funded 12 day trip of the Thai – Burma railway awarded by the Fire and Emergency Service Authority (FESA), Western Australia. The Quiet Lion Tours have been operating since 1985, in honour of the efforts of Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop and his fellow prisoners of war of Australian, British, Dutch and American nationality, commemorating their efforts in the construction of the Thai – Burma railway, under Japanese occupation during the Second World War. On ANZAC Day, the tour visited Hellfire Pass for the dawn service which was a truly moving ceremony attended by the Govenor General, members of the Australian and New Zealand Governments as well as members of the American Defence Force. Hellfire Pass was a railway cutting, constructed by hand and basic tools, often requiring 18 hours of work per day from the Australian prisoners. Hellfire Pass’s name is derived from the scenes at night time of prisoners slaving by torchlight, said to visually resemble ‘Hell’. Following the ceremony at Hellfire Pass the tour travelled to the provincial capital, Kanchanaburi where a second service was held, consisting of members of the Quiet Lion Tour laying wreaths in memory of those Australia servicemen who had served and died on the Burma – Thai railway. The Ode was presented by Ex – Prisoner of war

and Veteran of 2/2 Pioneers Neil MacPherson, one of the four members of the Ex – Prisoners of war who attended the ceremony. This in particular was extremely moving. The remaining time in Thailand was spent sightseeing as well as visiting several of the Prisoner of War camps such as that at Hintok Mountain. The trek (approximately 3 kilometres) from Hintok Cutting to Hellfire Pass was of great interest to see the extreme conditions under which the railway was constructed.
On day nine, it was great fun to go elephant riding and to see an elephant show at Nakom Pathom. Definitely an experience I wouldn’t have at home! For this great experience I sincerely thank Roleystone
Fire Brigade for their nomination, particularly Bob Littman for his efforts in coordination with FESA staff. I’d also like to thank FESA for funding my nomination as well as Eric Wilson, the Quiet Lion Tour leader, for all his efforts and veterans such as Neil MacPherson for their presence and service.

Burning off generally Burning can cause a nuisance to neighbours and a serious health problem to people suffering from respiratory conditions such as asthma. Residents are urged to consider suitable alternatives before burning such as mulching, use of Council’s green waste collection service or transfer to Council’s landfill site. Penalties for illegal burning include a $250 on the spot fine or up to $5,000 if legal action is taken. To minimise the effects of smoke, permits to burn must be obtained from the City’s Health Service before burning on residential land from 1 June to 30 September each year. Burning permits Burning permits are issued by the City’s Health Services Department during 1 June till 30 September each year, in an attempt to reduce the amount of backyard burning to improve air quality for residences in the area. Canadian Director Lee Chambers is heading to Perth, Australia and he’s bringing his awardwinning Make It Short Film Project along with him. Sponsored by Canada’s Ontario Arts Council, this educational workshop series, which is heading into its 6 year, plays a unique role in educating remote communities on the art of film production by allowing the general public the opportunity to experience life on a ‘real’ film set - in front and behind the camera. The workshop covers the basics of acting, direction, cinematography, lighting, sound and editing. As part of the event. Chambers will be speaking on June 23 for the students at Roleystone District High School. The entertaining and inspiring lecture series looks at how you can make sure a production all falls into place, as well as how you balance the art with the business side of filmmaking. Also thrown into the mix are a collection of humorous war stories about life on movie sets. With executive producer support from Genie nominee Vincenzo Natali (‘Splice’), Chambers will also be shooting a short 16mm film during his stay in Australia. “I am happy to support the sixth Make It Short Film Project as it demystifies the process and allows participants to dive into filmmaking without hesitation,” noted Vincenzo. “I am excited to network and share my stories and passion for film production with young people in Australia,” claims Chambers. “I am also looking forward to making my next short film in a completely new environment.” Chambers’ last film, ‘When Life Gives You Lemons’ has been selected by over 40 film festivals and recently earned him a Directors Guild of Canada Ontario nomination for Best Director. Armadale Aquatic Centre is abuzz with activity as scheduled upgrades for vital plant, pipework and equipment are carried out. Balance tanks for the 50m and 25m pools are currently being installed, with a new plant room to be built over the top. Parts of the concourse surrounding the pools have also been removed to enable new pipes to be laid. This will allow each pool to be heated separately. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said the City of Armadale’s twostage upgrade of the ageing Aquatic Centre infrastructure was necessary prior to it being developed as a year-round facility. “The current works are worth $3.8 million and follow on from the $900,000 we spent last winter removing old features, upgrading the grandstand and change rooms, painting sections of the exterior, installing a new playground and multi-sport court and landscaping,” Cr Reynolds said. “This summer our local residents and visitors will see major improvements to the Aquatic Centre, knowing that we are ontrack for our future goal – a multipurpose leisure facility with an

Nineteen-year-old started karate in 2003, when he was eleven. He was interested in self defence and wanted to improve his confidence and selfesteem. Cameron’s karate achievements to date include winning the Mike Abreu Awards in 2005 (junior) and 2007 (senior), and picking up several medals at Yoseikan-ryu (State level) tournaments. Cameron also won two gold and one silver medal for kata in the 2009 Kofukan interclub tournament, and then came second in kata at this event in 2011. Why were interest rates left on hold? In a nut shell, inflation is a little higher than the RBA would like (being at the top part of their target band), on the other hand interest rates on most loans are currently a little above historic average, this then represents a mildly restrictive stance on the monetary policy therefore there is no need to raise interest rates. This news brings comfort for many buyers looking to purchase hills properties and will help to stabilize property prices over the coming months. Here are some of the factors that the RBA took into consideration in their recent decision: • A rise in commodity prices leading to an increase in inflation over the past quarter. • The medium-term overall outlook for the economy remains positive. This is taking into account the summer floods and Cyclone Yasi’s affect on overall production which has particularly affected coal mining due to the difficulty of removing water from flooded mines. • Commercial property developers reporting that lending conditions are tight and activity is subdued. • Households remain cautious in their spending and borrowing decisions. Fuel, food (fruit and vegetable prices increased 15% in the past quarter), utility prices as well as mortgage rates are weighing on consumer confidence. • Housing prices in most cities are either flat or lower over the last few months. • Employment growth is solid and wage growth is picking up. • Inflation is expected to increase gradually over the next few years. Byford resident asks “which witch is which?” in school holiday panto fun
Is proud to announce it’s 2011 season: Grumble bum & the trIcky WItch (Pantomime) July 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 20, 22, 23
Byford resident Samantha Hutchins is taking to the stage in her first pantomime this July – and, despite the old saying “never work with children or animals”, she’s acting with both. It’s all part of Grumblebum and the Tricky Witch, written and directed by Linda Roads at Roleystone Theatre for the school holidays. The story follows Violet Crumble and a prince who have fallen in love – but Violet gets banished from the village, accused of being a witch. She goes on a quest to find the evil witch of the forest, meeting trees, fairies and animals along the way, to discover if she is also a witch. Hutchins plays Fairy Goodness Gracious, a character she describes as bubbly and over-the-top. “She does anything to help her friends and always puts them first,” she said. “My character can also be very sarcastic, especially when dealing with the witch.” Given it’s her first time treading the boards, Hutchins believes the singing required will be her biggest challenge. “I’ve never sung in front of anyone, so to get up in front of an audience and sing when I’ve had no lessons whatsoever is a huge deal for me,” she said. “When I saw auditions for a pantomime come up, I jumped at the idea – it sounded like a great play and it was also something for children, where I have the opportunity to make them laugh.” Linda Roads was inspired to write another pantomime after the success of her last one, Fairytale and Witch. “I’ve never directed a standard play,” she said. “I stick to what I know and I love pantomimes.
“They’re fun and everyone can get involved.” Starting out with Opera Viva, Roads went on to perform with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of WA before working extensively with Roleystone and Acorn Theatres. She has also worked for the production company Waiting in the Wings, where she originally began writing Grumblebum and the Tricky Witch. The show plays at 8pm, July 8, 9, 15, 16, 17, 20, 22 and 23 with a 2pm matinee on July 17. Tickets are $20 adults, $15 children – book on 9397 5730 or tickets@ roleystonetheatre.com.au. Roleystone Theatre is located at 587 Brookton Highway, Roleystone, opposite the Croyden Road junction. More information is also available at www. roleystonetheatre.com.au.

Rainbow Rider’s Competition Success With the ‘odd’ Easter dates this year, Rainbow Riding School’s traditional school holiday events were split up. The Showjumping Day was held on 30th April and was a great opportunity to try out the new adjacent jumping arena, which is offering some exciting challenges to the more
adventurous jumpers. The black ‘Champion’ sash after completion of the four rounds went to Sky Scott, who jumped “Chantilly” to 80cm. Roley rider Kate Baker, in her first showjumping event, also deserves a mention for riding brilliantly in all four rounds. The gymkhana was then held the

following Saturday, May 7th— the day before Mother’s Day. Our littlest Roley Rider, four-year-old Teah Hardisy, joined big sister Ashlee in making her gymkhana debut. Each rider took part in seven events, including Bending, Walk-Trot-Run and the everpopular Lolly Bag race. On this occasion, newer riders firmly outnumbered the seniors, which called for a bit of handicapping to ensure an even riding field. Senior riders had to lose their saddles, riding crops and, in one case, almost their pony to keep things even. The day wound up with the inaugural Mother’s Day Event, which saw two heats of four Mother-daughter teams competing to stay on their ponies as Mums raced up the arena and tag-teamed at the other end with their daughters. Fairness was again the order of the day, with the more experienced riding Mums given jumps to get over: Chief Instructor Anita and her 10yo daughter Shannon had to clear an 80cm jump, without a saddle.
Only one Mum managed to ‘stack’ it, finding out first-hand just how soft those woodchips in the arena really are. This team eventually won their heat, overcoming the protest lodged in view of the rules stipulating that competitors had to actually stay on their ponies. The judges declared the incident an ‘involuntary accelerated dismount’ (as opposed to actually falling off) and the team escaped disqualification and were awarded the purple ribbon. (Names have been withheld to protect the guilty, but naturally, the culprit was a Roley Mum…and I won’t talk about that anymore). Champion trophies on the day went to Bianca Bowden (junior riders) and Roley’s Abby Fouweather (senior riders), both riding our indomitable Shetland “Bella”. Rainbow Riding School’s normal term lessons are now back in full swing; call Chief Instructor Anita Moor on 0438 687 666 to check class availability. See you in the saddle! Karen Fouweather.

Trent Stuart had a heap of the footy and as usual made the most of his possessions, Steve Hadlam kicked a bag of goals, and the strong Roleystone backline held up all day.
