pring in the Shenandoah Valley is a breath of fresh air, both figuratively and literally. The warm breezes carry with them the sweet perfume of flowers crowded in boxwood gardens in the colonial towns. The lush green of the rolling countryside provides the perfect backdrop for orchards resplendent with the delicate pink and white of apple blossoms. We invite you and your family to share in our celebration of springtime by attending the 86th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® in Winchester, Virginia from April 26th - May 5th. During the Festival, Winchester residents open their doors to tens of thousands of new guests and old friends who gather in this All-America Community for the traditional celebration of a promising apple crop. From the pomp and pageantry of the Queen’s Coronation to the mechanized wonder of the Firefighters’ Parade; from the glitter and glow of our tremendous Fireworks Show to the serene beauty of the floats in our Grand Feature Parade, the Festival has something for the entire family. Carnival; circus; midway; dinners; dances; displays; shows: make plans for your family to be part of the fun at the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, our 86th Anniversary! For additional information call 540-6623863 or go to www.TheBloom.com for a complete schedule of events.

Day Spa

erkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name – Berkeley Springs. The waters flow at a constant 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation’s smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia’s splendid outdoors. ß T h e VA L L EY R e v ue

REFLECTING ON ONE HUNDRED

Sesquicentennial Commemoration

Retreat from Gettysburg Contributed by Rachel B.K. Nichols Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau

E

arly morning July 4, 1863. Tens of thousands of soldiers from the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia received orders to begin their retreat from three soul-shattering days on the battlefields of Gettysburg; a place most of them had never even heard of just a few weeks before. Their original numbers had been decimated. Out of approximately 57,000 men, over half had been killed, wounded or were missing. General Robert E. Lee, carrying a deep sense of having failed his troops, ordered the men to retreat south. Even in defeat, he endeavored to rouse the troops, but it was a nearly impossible task. They were to head back across the Potomac River at Williamsport, MD to the relative safety of Virginia. During incursions north toward Gettysburg, the Confederate army had made numerous forays into surrounding towns commandeering horses, wagons and whatever supplies they could find. Lee had no intention of leaving all the valuables behind; they were sorely needed back home. This created a wagon train of 15-20 miles in length. Included in that sorrowful line were 10,000 badly wounded men. Their cries of pain formed the soundtrack of the journey. Torrential rains during the 24 APRIL 2013

retreat to the Potomac (July 4-13) only served to make the journey that much more difficult. But this was not to be a peaceful trek. The Union Army of the Potomac, under the leadership of General George Meade, gave chase. Meade’s cautious attitude often served to allow the southerners to escape what might have been yet another crushing, possibly final blow. Between Gettysburg and Williamsport there were numerous skirmishes as the Union Army of the Potomac pursued the rebels. “Both Lee’s army and Meade’s army spent more time fighting during this campaign in MD than they did in PA. Several small, but important, battles took place in Washington County, which all played a huge role in Lee’s successful extrication of his army from being trapped against the THE VALLEY REVUE

of the American Civil War northern army seemed to have taken. By the time General Meade gave the order to attack, his troops found empty trenches. Frye further said, “President Lincoln believed his army could finish off General Lee at Williamsport, but once again, the sly fox general escaped.” Potomac River,” said author and Antietam National Battlefield tour guide Tom Clemens. In short, action was seen in many towns in which we live today: Monterey Pass (Blue Ridge Summit), Leitersburg, Hagerstown, Cearfoss (Cunningham Corners), Jones’ Crossroads (Lappans), Smithsburg, Boonsboro, Funkstown, Williamsport and Falling Waters. Dennis Frye, Chief Historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park sums up the retreat thusly, “There were more battles and more days of fighting in Washington County after Gettysburg than at Gettysburg itself.” Upon reaching Williamsport, the Confederate Army found that pontoon bridges that had been there just weeks before were destroyed. According to Frye, General Lee and his troops were truly trapped at Williamsport and “possibly in greater danger than at Gettysburg itself.” They built entrenchments anticipating imminent attack and set to fashioning new bridges and hoping the water level would subside to provide fording spots. And though there was imminent danger, Lee was piqued at the slow crawl the www.v alley revue.com

This year marks the Sesquicentennial, 150th anniversary, of that retreat and there are many ways to experience the journey and special events to attend. Suffering none of the discomfort of the retreating soldiers, a modernday traveler can drive the route taken by the Confederate forces, stopping along the way to view the landscape and read the many wayside signs that tell the story. A map is available by contacting the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 301-791-3246 or www.marylandmemories.com. The Maryland Office of Tourism has developed Civil War Trails free mobile apps, which are available at the App Store and at Google Play. The Town of Williamsport in partnership with the C&O Canal National Historical Park, has planned a weekend of events July 12, 13, 14 2013 at Historic Springfield Farm. Activities will include reenactments, speakers, bus tours from Williamsport to Gettysburg and back following the retreat routes, kid’s activities, food and music. Washington County is a significant part of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, certified by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority. Ready for something a little more sedate? How about the Walking Tour of Martinsburg’s Historic Properties? This tour will take you to 24 of the historic buildings in the downtown area and takes about two hours to walk. You will see the Courthouse at 100 W King Street where Belle Boyd was held after her arrest as a Confederate spy. Further walking will take you to the Adam Stephen home (founder of Martinsburg) and the Triple Brick Museum. Walking back toward town will take you to the cashmere mills, the old jail, the old Richardsonian-Romanesque Post Office that is now home to The Arts Centre.
