pring in the Shenandoah Valley is a breath of fresh air, both figuratively and literally. The warm breezes carry with them the sweet perfume of flowers crowded in boxwood gardens in the colonial towns. The lush green of the rolling countryside provides the perfect backdrop for orchards resplendent with the delicate pink and white of apple blossoms. We invite you and your family to share in our celebration of springtime by attending the 84th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® in Winchester, Virginia from April 25th - May 1st. During the Festival, Winchester residents open their doors to tens of thousands of new guests and old friends who gather in this All-America Community for the traditional celebration of a promising apple crop. From the pomp and pageantry of the Queen’s Coronation to the mechanized wonder of the Firefighters’ Parade; from the glitter and glow of our tremendous Fireworks Show to the serene beauty of the floats in our Grand Feature Parade, the Festival has something for the entire family. Carnival; circus; midway; dinners; dances; displays; shows: make plans for your family to be part of the fun at the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, our 84rd Anniversary! For additional information call 540-662-3863 or go to www.thebloom.com for a complete schedule of events.

REFLECTING ON ONE HUNDRED

Sesquicentennial Commemoration

Any One Of Us Can Lick 10 Of Them! Locals Choose Sides in the Civil War Contributed by Stephen R. Bockmiller In the month of April 1861, eighty years of tension between North and South came to a breaking point. Determined to expel Federal forces from the Richard H. Alvey few remaining Credit: Author's collection manned outposts in the new seven-state Confederacy, the new government bombarded the U.S. army garrison at Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina on April 12 and 13. This use of force provided President Lincoln the leverage to call up 75,000 militia troops to suppress the rebellion. Four additional states would then secede rather than participate in an attack on a sister-state. Poorly trained militia, the primary military force available before the war mobilization, mustered at their armories and drill fields and prepared for a 90-day war. Several regiments quickly responded to President Lincoln’s call to defend Washington. The 7th New York Militia, more of a social club of Manhattan “swells”, was among the first to leave, as was the 6th Massachusetts militia. As it passed through Baltimore on April 19, the Bay Staters received a reception from equally excited and enthusiastic men. Unfortunately, they did not share their view of the Union. The pro-southern mob attacked the soldiers with words, paving stones and debris. Shots were 30 The Cal end ar Magazin e 30 THE Calen dar MAGA Z IN E

fired and when the smoke cleared, four soldiers and 12 civilians lay dead. The excitement of the time did not escape our region. Men flocked to Dr. Charles MacGill their flags, be it a Source: Washington County Historical Society northern banner or a southern one. Washington County was a predominantly pro-Union area. Every corner of the County held a “Union meeting” where citizens learned of the latest news, listened to orations by prominent citizens and generally cheered the preservation of the Nation. Hagerstown, Leitersburg, Smithsburg, Clear Spring, Williamsport and even thinly populated Blair Valley all held “Union meetings” as well as numerous others not mentioned here. Not everyone was for the Union. In a meeting in Hagerstown, Dr. Charles MacGill and attorney Richard Alvey spoke out against forcing the South to stay in the Union. Their statements were not forgotten and their views landed them 14-month stays in Federal prisons later that year. They would be released without charge, trial or condition late in 1862. MacGill, four of his sons and his son in law all later wore Confederate gray. Former Congressman James Dixon Roman was one of several Maryland representatives at a “Peace Convention” in Washington, looking for a way to avert war. Although pro-Union, he was www. va l l eyrevue. c o m www. val l eyrevue. com

against coercing the seceding states back into the fold. The Confederates, hypersensitized to “states rights”, made a conscious decision to stage troops in Berkeley County, but for defense only. They would not offend Maryland’s sovereignty and cross the Potomac until the Antietam campaign 18 months later. The first Union troops to garrison the area, soldiers from Pennsylvania, Indiana and Wisconsin, arrived in June. Over the coming months, a panel of local authors and historians will share stories with Valley Revue readers about the events that transpired in our region 150 years ago as part of the Valley Revue’s sesquicentennial commemoration of the American Civil War. The background and foundation have now been laid. Make sure you pick up copies of the Revue in the upcoming months and follow the local experience as the stories are told, and in the order they occurred. www.v al val eyrevue. ll ey rev ue . co m www. com

Visit the Shoppes of Historic Hedgesville Hedgesville, as a political entity, is older than the State of West Virginia, being incorporated under the laws of Virginia in 1854. The Town was platted in 1830 from land owned by Josiah Hedges and Mary Claycomb at a location known as Skinners Gap in North Mountain, seven miles north of Martinsburg. It was located at the site of a natural limestone spring which had been an Indian meeting place. George Washington, while a young man and a surveyor, visited the area and worshipped at the site of what is now Mt. Zion Episcopal Church. The little village was occupied by invading armies of both the North and South in the Civil War. A mile east of the village, the Battle of North Mountain was fought and resulted in the capture of 1,500 Union soldiers who were marched south to prisoner of war camps. The town was designated as a 1976 “All West
