History is alive and well in Berkeley Springs, the country’s first spa, part of daily life for both residents and visitors. You can follow in centuries-old footsteps by “taking the waters” in historic Roman Baths or contemporary spas and with every glass of water in fine restaurants and cafes. There are selfguided tours of everything from Berkeley Springs State Park and the historic town of Berkeley Springs (Bath) to a countywide driving tour of George Washington-related sites. A delightful Museum of the Berkeley Springs is open year ‘round on the second floor of the Roman Bath House in Berkeley Springs State Park. Geneological records are available at the Berkeley Springs Public Library with Historical Society volunteers on hand to help most mornings.

The Story of Berkeley Springs Berkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name – Berkeley Springs. The waters flow at a constant 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation’s smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia’s splendid outdoors. ß

Concerned About Alzheimer's? It Might Be Hearing Loss Instead

(NewsUSA) - Data from many studies suggest that the incidence of Alzheimer's disease is on the rise. However, many of the symptoms associated with early Alzheimer's disease are the same as those associated with hearing loss. According to a recent study led by Frank R. Lin, MD, PhD, of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, the risk of dementia increased among participants with at least a mild 25-decibel hearing loss. Participants with more severe hearing loss were most likely to be diagnosed with dementia – and even

Alzheimer's. The relationship between Alzheimer's and hearing loss should come as no surprise. After all, you can't remember what someone said if you didn't hear them say it. Several symptoms are common to both Alzheimer's and untreated hearing loss. These symptoms include depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation, and problems talking and understanding what is being said. In addition, people with either Alzheimer's or unidentified hearing loss may have inappropriate responses to social cues, lower scores on tests of mental function, attitudes of denial, defensiveness or negativity and increased distrust of others' motives, even those of family and friends. Individuals with unidentified hearing loss may appear paranoid and excessively concerned that others are talking about them. "Untreated hearing loss is a significant quality-of-life issue," said Sreek Cherukuri, MD, a board-certified ear, nose and throat physician based in

To help more people improve their lives by improving their hearing, Dr. Cherukuri designed the MDHearingAid, a comfortable, costeffective way to improve hearing. "I could see no reason why we couldn't develop a quality hearing instrument for about the price of an iPhone," he said. If you are concerned about a loved one who is experiencing any of the symp-

In several studies, even patients with Alzheimer's showed improved ability to understand and communicate after they were fitted with hearing aids. "Our mission is to remove cost as an obstacle for the millions with hearing loss that cannot afford a custom hearing aid," said Dr. Cherukuri. Lighting Can Be Your Eyes' Best Friend As You Age

(NewsUSA) - Everyone experiences changes in their eyesight as they age. For many, it means buying reading glasses to read a menu, newspaper or other small print. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), changing the lighting in your surroundings can go a long way to enhance reading ability and increase comfort. “Often, the first thing people notice as they get older is their loss of ability to see distance,” notes Terry McGowan, director of engineering & technology for ALA and owner of Lighting Ideas in Cleveland. “That happens around age 45 and is called presbyopia. By 60, most people have a ‘fixed focus’ optical system and need glasses. After age 60, eye and visual system changes accelerate, so that less light reaches the eye. Therefore,” McGowan says, “people need more light to see details as they age.” Paul Eusterbrock, president of Holk?tter International, a lighting manufacturer that has championed lighting developments and products to help aging eyes, agrees. “The main issue is the quality of light,” he says. “Research shows that a 60-year-old needs twice as much light as a 30-year-old. Most of the commonly found lighting guidelines are written with the 30-year-old user in mind,” Eusterbrock explains. Is there a magic light bulb that will work for everyone? McGowan and Eusterbrock say no. “This may sound strange, but the perfect bulb is whichever one the user finds works best for them,” McGowan says. “Individual vision varies so much – especially as people age – that it’s difficult to develop lighting recipes that are one-size-fits-all,” he says. Whether you are old or young, the basic rules of good lighting apply: have sufficient illumination with little or no glare, and use diffused lighting to minimize shadows. If energy savings is a concern, McGowan recommends selecting compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and LED bulbs with warm tones (look for 27003000K on the box) and a high color-rendering index of 90 or more. For expert advice from a certified lighting consultant (CLC) or accredited lighting specialist (LS), stop by an ALA-member lighting showroom. They will help you save time, frustration and money. REFLECTING ON ONE HUNDRED

Sesquicentennial Commemoration Porterfield House

The Battle of Falling Waters

he Battle of Falling Waters, fought on July 2, 1861, has several names and is frequently confused with an 1863 engagement. However this Civil War battle, the first in the Shenandoah Valley, also called the Battle of Hoke's Run, and the Battle of Hainesville, contributed to the Confederate victory at the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) less than three weeks later. Union General Robert Patterson commanded about 3,500 men, comprised of some regular troops, but most were 90-day volunteers, whose enlistments were about to end. He was under orders to at least contain a small Confederate division commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston, keeping them from re-enforcing the Southern troops gathering near the town of Manassas outside of Washington, D.C. Colonel Thomas J. Jackson, who commanded a brigade under Johnston, was stationed north of Martinsburg. Upon learning from his cavalry screen on the morning of July 2 that Federal troops had crossed the Potomac and were marching south, Jackson ordered the 5th Virginia Regiment, approximately 380 men, and one cannon, north along the Valley Turnpike to meet them. The engagement started when Confederate Col. J.E.B. Stuart (still wearing

T

his blue US Army uniform) and his men, surprised and captured almost a whole company of Union Infantry. After crossing the Potomac before dawn and marching all morning the Northern soldiers were resting in the shade and mistook Stuart for a Union officer. The two armies met just north of what is now the intersection of Hammond's Mill Road and Route 11 on the farm of William Rush “Billy” Porterfield. For about 45 minutes the Virginians fought a delaying action as the Union troops brought up four cannon, and tried to surround the Confederates with their infantry. Substantially outnumbered and outgunned, the Confederates slowly retreated about a mile south, and gradually broke off fighting. There were only a few causalities on either side, although Stuart’s cavalry captured 49 Union soldiers. During the battle Porterfield’s house, the log portion of which was built circa 1763 by David Crocket(t), the grandfather of the Alamo’s Davy Crockett, was damaged and the barn burned to the ground. The house still stands today at what was the center of the battlefield. The intensity of the Confederate fighting withdrawal caused the Union forces to overestimate the Confederate strength by almost tenfold. So although tactically the Battle of Falling Waters was a Union victory, strategically the

Confederates were successful. From this point on, Union General Patterson would be less aggressive, thinking he was up against a larger Confederate force. This allowed General Johnston, along with Jackson's Virginians, to slip away and re-enforce the Confederate troops preparing to fight along Bull Run.

Although this photo shows Jackson in the uniform of a Confederate General, he was not promoted until after Falling Waters, and will not earn the name “Stonewall” until the Battle of Manassas almost three weeks later. Photo credit: Library of Congress

Less than three weeks after Falling Waters, on July 21, 1861, the Confederates win a decisive victory at the Battle of Manassas where Jackson received his sobriquet “Stonewall”. The Civil War would then continue on for almost four more bloody years. Falling Waters was a small battle with important repercussions.

If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.* Imagine the positive impact if threequarters of the employed population did that. For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. The number of people it takes to start the trend ... you.
