erkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name – Berkeley Springs. The waters flow at a constant 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation’s smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia’s splendid outdoors. ß T h e VA L L EY r e v Ue

fter his victory at Second Manassas in August 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to venture into Maryland to hopefully recruit more soldiers and obtain supplies. What became known as the Maryland Campaign resulted in the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. Lee crossed the Potomac River with his army at White’s Ferry near Leesburg and proceeded to Frederick, Maryland. As a part of his plan, Lee directed General Stonewall Jackson’s command to head west, cross the Potomac and take the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, capture the Union forces at Martinsburg, and intercept any that may attempt to escape from Harper’s Ferry. Acting on these orders Jackson passed through Middletown and Boonesboro, then headed toward Williamsport at which point he crossed the Potomac River into what is now Berkeley County, West Virginia. Moving quickly his command headed south on the Valley Turnpike, present day Route 11. When reaching what is now the intersection with Hammonds Mill Road, Jackson sent General A. P. Hill on to 30 AU GU S T 2012

Martinsburg, while Jackson himself accompanied troops west to North Mountain Depot, on the B&O Railroad. This rail stop is where State Road 901 crosses the tracks east of Hedgesville. There the Confederates took possession of the line halting any possible evacuation of Federal troops by rail. The next day, September 12, 1862 Jackson’s forces approached Martinsburg from multiple directions. However since the Union troops under General Julius White had withdrawn to Harpers Ferry during the night, not a hostile shot was fired. As the Confederates entered Martinsburg local residents came out in throngs to view the troops and especially their commander. Jackson’s fame had been growing ever since earning his nickname at the Battle of Manassas. So upon learning of his approach many citizens came out to see the famous general. Removing his hat as he rode down the main street, Jackson acknowledged the cheers. As he passed the rejoicing crowd swarmed after him. Jackson soon retired to the Everett House to deal with paperwork. This private hotel was located on the southwest corner of South Queen and West Burke Streets in downtown Martinsburg. Although he had the doors locked and shutters closed, Jackson was still unable to work. People were calling his name, rattling The VALLEY R eV U e

the shutters and trying to peer through the windows in an attempt to see the legendary general. Finally giving in, Jackson uncharacteristically agreed to receive the crowd. He was quickly engulfed by gawking children, men wanting to shake his hand, and women screaming for locks of his hair and buttons from his coat. Even Jackson’s horse had his tail and mane snipped for souvenirs until a guard was posted to protect him. At one point Jackson told a group of women who were trying to get a lock of his hair, “Really, ladies, this is the first time I was ever surrounded by the enemy.” However the ladies were eventually able to cut some buttons from his coat and in the press of people, boys took the buttons from his coat tails. www. va l leyrev ue . co m

The greeting and subsequent attention that he received in Martinsburg is more like that given a present day rock star than a rebel general. Finally Jackson decided to take his staff and establish his headquarters outside of town to escape all the commotion. After leaving Martinsburg the following day, Jackson’s Command goes on to capture the Federal forces at Harpers Ferry, and to fight in the Battle of Antietam. One wonders if any of Jackson’s pilfered buttons might still be tucked away in the back of a dresser drawer somewhere in Martinsburg, prized as a family heirloom. AU G U S T 2012

Eating Well Promotes Energy Eating well helps keep up your energy level, too. By consuming enough calories — a way to measure the energy you get from food —you give your body the fuel it needs throughout the day. The number of calories needed depends on how old you are, whether you’re a man or woman, your height and weight, and how active you are.

you age, you will probably need fewer calories to stay at the same weight. Choosing mostly nutrient-dense foods — foods which have a lot of nutrients but relatively few calories — can give you the nutrients you need while keeping down calorie intake.

enough fiber or fluids may cause constipation. Eating more wholegrain foods with fiber, fruits and vegetables or drinking more water may help with constipation.

Make One Change at a Time Eating well isn’t just a “diet” or “ program” that’s here today and gone tomorrow. It is part of a healthy lifestyle that you can adopt now and stay with in the years to come. To eat healthier, you can begin by taking small steps, making one change at a time. For instance, you might: • take the salt shaker off your table. Decreasing your salt intake slowly will allow you to adjust. • switch to whole-grain bread, seafood, or more vegetables and fruits when you shop. These changes may be easier than you think. They’re possible even if you need help with shopping or cooking, or if you have a limited budget.

Checking With Your Doctor If you have a specific medical condition, be sure to check with your doctor or registered dietitian about foods you should include or avoid.

You Can Start Today Whatever your age, you can start making positive lifestyle changes today. Eating well can help you stay healthy and independent — and look and feel good — in the years to come. Information from www.nihseniorhealth.gov

H

edgesville is located in Skinner’s Gap on North Mountain, where the original Warm Springs Road (now WV9) passed through from Alexandria, Virginia to Bath (Berkeley Springs). An abundant spring drew the first settler and today serves as Town Spring marked by a protective structure. The spring is reportedly never affected by drought and the water is a persistent 57 degrees. In 1738, the Hedges family began to acquire land just east of the gap. During the French and Indian War in the 1750s, George Washington supervised the construction of a stockade fort in the gap called Fort Hedges. It was one of a string of forts constructed for protection against the French and their Indian allies. The town was laid out in 1832 and established as Hedgesville by the Virginia General Assembly in 1836. At that time, a law was passed making it unlawful to “sit or loiter about Town Spring drinking spirits.” The town was finally incorporated in 1854 and in 1870 the Town Council was given control of the springs. A number of antebellum historic structures still line the village streets, including many original log homes. The village is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
