hile waiting for re-enforcements W before starting his Romney Expedition, Stonewall Jackson identified a promising target for a small offensive operation. The result was that in December 1861 Confederate troops under his command made three separate attempts to breach Dam No. 5 on the Potomac River, in the hopes of halting Union barge traffic on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal.

The C&O Canal ran along the Maryland side of the Potomac River from Georgetown, in the District of Columbia, up to Cumberland, Maryland. Since the destruction of the B&O Railroad in June of 1861, the canal was the only commercial link carrying coal, grain and other bulk goods from the west to Washington.

To provide water for the canal, “feeder dams” had been built at points along the Potomac to divert water from the river.

Without these dams the canal would be dry. These feeder dams were numbered sequentially starting with the one nearest the beginning of the canal in Georgetown and moving up river. Feeder Dam No. 5 was originally constructed in 1832-35 of rubble filled timber cribs. A timber crib is a substantial wooden framework built to hold the loose stone from being washed away. Over the years the Potomac River experienced a number of floods which repeatedly damaged this structure. An 18 foot tall masonry replacement, begun in 26 DEC EMB ER 2 0 1 1

1857, had almost been completed by the start of the Civil War. This fifth dam on the river created a lake behind it that was almost a mile long. In addition to feeding water to twenty-two miles of the C&O Canal, the dam also supplied the water to power “Honeywood Mill” located opposite the canal on the Virginia shore. Jackson reasoned that if this dam could be broken, drying up the canal, an important supply artery for the Union would be severed.

Leaving their winter quarters just outside of Winchester, a detachment under the command of Major Elisha Franklin Paxton marched north on the Valley Pike through Martinsburg to the vicinity of Dam No. 5. Beginning on December 7, 1861 this small force made the first attempt to break the dam. With Paxton is Captain Raleigh T. Colston commanding Company E, 2nd Virginia Infantry. His family owned not only Honeywood Mill, but most of the land along the Virginia side of the river near the dam. Due to his knowledge of both the area and the construction of the dam, Colston volunteered to lead the breaching effort. In addition, all three Confederate expeditions to destroy the dam, camp in the yard of Colston's home, “Medway”.

This was an ideal spot to camp due to its location roughly half mile from the dam, yet out of sight from Union troops.

of the American Civil War the expedition, recalled arriving after dark at “Medway, my old home" and "encamping in our yard”.

The Confederates first tried to shell the dam causing only very minor damage. This action quickly attracted the attention of Northern pickets patrolling the canal.

Various small Union forces rushed to the area near the dam and maintained a constant small arms fire to discourage the Confederate’s efforts. Seeing that artillery would not break the dam, the Confederates then dug a ditch around the south abutment. It was hoped that water washing around the end of the dam would quickly erode away the structure effectively breaking the dam. Believing that the rushing water would finish the job, the Confederate forces returned to Winchester on December 9th. However, the water level in the Potomac was falling rapidly and the flow through the ditch around the abutment stopped before any serious damage could occur.

The second attempt, led by Jackson himself, was begun on December 17, 1861.

For this effort he brought a much larger force including elements of the First (Stonewall) Brigade, supported by the Rockbridge Artillery and Turner Ashby’s cavalry. To distract the Federal forces Jackson also made diversionary movements at Falling Waters, and further down river at Dam No. 4. Confederate troops even hauled boats to the Potomac to feign a crossing into Maryland at Williamsport.

Raleigh Colston again volunteered to lead the demolition parties, this time into the icy water with crowbars, axes, picks, and shovels. They would attempt to make several holes in the base of the dam hoping that water pressure would enlarge them washing out the dam.

Union forces under Colonel Samuel H. Leonard, 13th Massachusetts Infantry, now with some artillery support, maintained a steady fire, not only on the demolition parties working in the river, but also on the Confederate batteries set up on the hills south of the dam. For four days the Confederates worked waist deep in the freezing water under constant fire from the Federal troops. William B. Colston recalled, “It was only a few days before Christmas and our clothes froze stiff on us as soon as we came out of the water to return to camp”. Due to the cold weather, miserable and dangerous working conditions, Jackson's troops jokingly referred to this

expedition as “The Dam Trip”.

While the demolition parties worked, both sides tried to drive the other away from the river and the dam. To stop Confederate sharpshooters from using the upper floors of the mill, Union forces crossed the river and burnt it to the ground. In turn the Confederate batteries damaged houses and barns providing shelter to Federal sharpshooters on the Maryland side of the river.

Eventually a fair sized breach was made in the dam sending water gushing downstream. On the morning of December 21st, satisfied that the canal had been crippled, Jackson withdrew the expedition and headed back toward Winchester.

However again the damage was not great, and with the help of Union troops the dam was repaired, and canal traffic resumed on December 22nd.

Between December 30, 1861 and January 3, 1862 a third and final attempt to breach the dam was made by a small cavalry force under Turner Ashby, again accompanied by Preston Chew’s horse artillery. The Confederates shelled the dam again with no appreciable affect. On this attempt they did not try to use manual labor to breach the structure. Although neither Colston brother was present for this attempt, the Confederates again used Medway for their camp. Quartermaster Sgt. James H. Williams wrote in his diary that he spent the first night of 1862 “sleeping on the porch of Capt. Raleigh Colston's home”.

On January 3rd these Confederates finally abandoned Dam No. 5 and set out to join up with Jackson at Bath (Berkeley Springs).

This was the last attempt by Confederate forces during the war to break Dam No. 5.

Ramps Bridge Also known as Failors Mill Bridge, one mile west of Newburg (off Rt. 641) on Covered Bridge Road. Built in 1882, it is the only such structure remaining on its original site in Cumberland Co. Red Bridge The covered bridge just south of Mercersburg on Rt. 416 was built in 1883 and is still in daily use.

Mercersburg Home of the famed Mercersburg Academy, a private school whose campus is home to the log cabin birthplace of James Buchanan, the only native Pennsylvanian to become President of the United States.

Robert Kennedy Memorial Presbyterian Church Organized in 1741 at Welsh Run, SE of Mercers-burg on Rt. 416, one of the oldest churches in the Cumberland Valley.

Greencastle Established in 1782, historical events include President Washington’s visit during the Whiskey Rebellion, and John Brown’s stay while working on plans for the Harpers Ferry Raid.

Firemen’s Display Greencastle. The Rescue Hose Company displays the nation’s oldest workable fire engine built in 1741 and other early firefighting equipment.

The Johnston Home Greencastle. Built in the late 1700’s by Dr. Robert Johnston, Surgeon-General during the Revolution.

George Washington slept here during a visit at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion.

Mason-Dixon Crown-Stone Marker Located S of Greencastle. Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed and marked the line between Md. and Pa. in 1765, placing stone markers at one-mile intervals, with every fifth mile marked by a Crown-Stone.

This 105th milestone, is one of the few remaining left.

Enoch Brown Park Just N of Greencastle. Massacre site of Enoch Brown, pioneer schoolteacher, and his ten pupils during the uprising of the Pontiac Indians in 1764.

Martin’s Mill Covered Bridge Greencastle. One mi. W of Greencastle.

The original bridge, built in 1849, crosses the Conococheague Creek. The bridge is 205 ft. long and approx. 28 ft. wide.

Brown’s Mill Graveyard Near Greencastle. Monument built to the memory of Revolutionary War heroes pays tribute to the men who fought for independence.

Corporal Rihl Monument Greencastle. Corporal William Rihl of the First New York Cavalry was the first union soldier killed on Free Soil in the Civil War, June 22, 1863.

Brown’s Mill School Just N of Greencastle, E of U.S. 11. A complete furnished example of a country schoolhouse.

Waynesboro Dates back to 1749. Located nearby is the SnowHill Nunnery with the cloistered buildings intact as they were used by the 7th-Day Baptists.

Toll Gate House 323 E. Main St. Waynesboro. Built between 1844 and 1853. Now serves as the office for the Franklin County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The Neas House 113 W. Chestnut St., Hanover. An elegant Federal-style mansion, circa 1783. One of the first all brick buildings in the town; it once was the home of Hanover’s first Burgess. The Warehime-Myers Mansion 305 Baltimore St., Hanover. A Neo-Classic structure, circa 1911. One of Hanover’s twin mansions built by the Hanover Shoe Co. for the co-owners. It has 17 room, 2 large halls, a carriage house and an expansive lawn with a wide variety of trees, identified by ‘common and botanical’ names. It remained in the family until 1996 when J. William Warehime purchased it. He donated it the Hanover Area Historical Society in 2007.

Historic Holiday Happenings The Berkeley County Historical Society will present their annual Christmas celebration at the Belle Boyd House/Berkeley County Museum. The lower floor will be decorated in Civil War era style and open for tours on December 9, 10, 16, and 17 from noon to 8 pm. The museum will also be open by appointment from December 12 – 16. While you’re in town, visit the Adam Stephen House for their Colonial Christmas celebration, featuring candlelight tours, bonfire and Yule log, and holiday music on December 10, 11, 17 and 18, from 4 to 8 pm.
