Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre is presenting its 29th season during the summer of 2012. With the celebration of the company’s 25th anniversary, the professional musical theatre completed the production of 100 Broadway musicals since its 1984 inaugural season. SSMT was founded by its Producing Artistic Director, Harold Herman, who wanted to provide affordable family entertainment in the community of Winchester/Frederick Co. and to give musical theatre students of Shenandoah Conservatory who were ready for work in a professional setting the opportunity to do so before venturing out to pursue their own careers. It is with great pride and satisfaction that the company is able to boast the success in maintaining affordable ticket prices and encouraging careers in the field of theatre for many over the years, a number of whom have gone on to enjoy work in professional regional theatres and on the stages of Broadway. Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre produces four Broadway musicals each summer in the beautiful 630-seat Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre on the campus of Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. Thirteen performances are given of each musical over a two-week period drawing audiences from a 150-mile radius with groups traveling in from as far away as Ohio and North Carolina. Upcoming shows: Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 The Musical is hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is about three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company. Outrageous, thought provoking and even a little romantic, its about teaming up and taking care of business. Grease –The rock ‘n’ roll era gets a big salute as the gum-chewing, hub-cap-stealing, hot-rod-loving boys with D.A.’s and leather jackets and their wise-cracking girls in teased curls, bobby sox and pedal pushers capture the look and sound of the 1950’s. SSMT’s production of Grease brings with it the newlyadded, highly popular numbers from the film as well as old favorites such as “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee,” and “Greased Lightnin’.” Peter Pan – We’re all young again and refusing to grow up as we settle in and watch as Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell and Lost Boys, Captain Hook, the pirates, the Indians and the crocodile of Never-Never Land entertain with this all-time, favorite story set to music. Performance Times – Evening: Wed-Sat 8 p.m., Sun. 7 p.m. Matinees: Every Sat. at 2:30 p.m. and Wed., July 18 and August 1. The 2nd Wed. Matinee of 9 to 5 was moved to Thurs.day, July 5th due to the July 4th holiday, and there is an extra matinee for Peter Pan on Thurs., August 2.

QUILT ODYSSEY • 717-423-5148 www.quiltodyssey.com • quiltodyssey@embarqmail.com CIVIL WAR QUILTS TO BE HIGHLIGHTED AT QUILT ODYSSEY 2012 QUILT ODYSSEY 2012 is again preparing unique

and exciting exhibits for its viewers’ pleasures. The prestigious quilt symposium and show will be open to the public Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 6pm and on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Presented to attendees will be the finalists in the contest quilts from all over the nation and from some of our foreign neighbors such as Japan and Canada. Tantamount among the exhibits will be another premiere exhibit of the Christ Collection specializing in Civil War quilts. Pat and Arlan Christ will be available for gallery walks and have also agreed to present two tea lectures at 4pm Thursday, July 26, and Saturday, July 28. Thursday’s lecture will be “One Hundred Years of Quilting,” a historical look at the progression of quilting in our area. Saturday’s lecture will highlight “Dutch Quilts from the Valley,” a look at Amish quilts and their influence. Other lectures include “What Are Grandma’s Quilts Worth?” by Kathy Kansier of Missouri on Thursday at 12:15 at Quilt Odyssey’s Light Lunch Lecture series. On Friday, registrants can enjoy the Light Lunch Lecture with Bonnie Hunter at 12:15pm as she presents her “Scrap User’s System” for organizing fabrics for quilts; or Pepper Cory’s Tea Lecture at 4pm “On the Trail of the Drunkard’s Path,” a look at the block and its derivatives with Pepper’s flair. Registration is open until July 10. Pre-registration is required to take classes or lectures. The Merchants Mall will host some new merchants this year like Sew Batiks, TSC Designs, BoNash, and Lizzie B Cre8tive in our efforts to provide

www. va l leyrev ue . co m

quilters and attendees with a diverse sampling of quilt-related merchandise. We strive to bring the newest and latest trends in the quilting world to those attending. Hugs & Kisses Quilts for Kids, a nonprofit venture started by Quilt Odyssey in 2006, has given more than 1,000 quilts to Hershey Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital. Machines are donated by Brother and Sew Unforgettable, York, Pa., to use at the show to make quilts for children who are patients at HMC facing more than usual medical problems, from NICU to 17 years of age. Donations of fabric, batting and thread are graciously donated by companies such as Quilters Confectionery, Prints Charming, Red Rooster Fabrics, P&B Textiles, and The Quiltmakers Cottage, and quilters at the show give their time to make the quilts. After the show, the bindings are put on compliments of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild, Chambersburg, Pa., under the tutelage of Sue Frederick who manages Hugs & Kisses for Quilt Odyssey. Last year, a quilt made by BBD Creations entitled “Our Quilt Odyssey” was given to Quilt Odyssey: it was decided to use it as a fund raiser and put it up for silent auction this year beginning Aug. 1 and ending Aug. 30. The proceeds are to go to the Susan G Komen Cancer Foundation. This quilt can be viewed at the show this year before it goes up for auction and it appears at www.quiltodyssey.com. We hope you’ll participate in this exciting auction – and bid as if a life depended on it – because it just may! JU LY 2012

erkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name – Berkeley Springs. The waters flow at a constant 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation’s smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia’s splendid outdoors. ß T h e VA L L EY r e v Ue

REFLECTING ON ONE HUNDRED

Sesquicentennial of the American New Civil War Exhibit Open at Ferry Hill Place in Sharpsburg, MD

n May of this year, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park opened new Civil War exhibits at Ferry Hill Place in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Several hundred visitors listened to Federal, State, and Local officials speak of the significance of the Civil War along the C&O Canal and the story of conflict and commerce that passed through Ferry Hill Place over the past 200 years. “Not only are we here to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this mansion and the history linked to this site, but we are also here to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War,” stated C&O Canal Superintendent Kevin Brandt during the opening ceremony. “At the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, we are pleased to have

received a National Park Service Civil War 150th grant to produce and install new exhibits at Ferry Hill Place so we can share this important history with park visitors.” The opening of the exhibits is also made possible, in part, by a generous grant from Jim Norton and the Carlson Family Foundation. The ribbon cutting and reception ceremony was made possible by the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The C&O Canal National Historical Park is a pathway into the rich history of Western Maryland,” Senator Mikulski said. “That’s why I’m proud to put funds in the federal checkbook to help preserve our heritage. These new exhibits at Ferry Hill Place tell the story of our past to inspire our future.” "Maryland is blessed to have so many historical and natural treasures like Ferry Hill Place,” commented U.S. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. “It is fitting that we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Ferry Hill Place, the site that played a key role in the settlement and commerce of this region.” National Park Service Civil War Sesquicentennial Director Cathy Beeler stressed that the Ferry Hill exhibit opening is the first event for the 150th commemoration of the 1862 Maryland The VALLEY R eV U e

Commemoration Civil War Campaign and the Battle of Antietam this September. She used this event to share the new NPS website for the 1862 Maryland Campaign www.nps.gov/marylandcampaign. “The C&O Canal Trust is honored to be part of this important event for the park” stated C&O Canal Trust President Matthew Logan. “I want to single out the support of Jim Norton and the Carlson Family Foundation for providing the funding that is allowing the park to keep Ferry Hill open throughout the summer and fall so that thousands of visitors will better understand the Canal’s special place in the history of the Civil War.” Speaking on behalf of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, South Mountain Recreation Area Superintendent, and South Mountain State Battlefield Park Manager Dan Spedden said, "The C&O Canal National Historical Park is Maryland's largest and most-visited national park. The state parks, which are located in Washington County, work hand-in-hand with the National Park Service. The 150th Anniversary of the Civil War battles, skirmishes, and incursions that happened in Washington County are being told now in a truly unique way." The Battle of South Mountain happened on September 14, 1862, and the Battle of Antietam, known as America's bloodiest day, happened on September 17, 1862. A highlight of the day was the return of Enoch to Ferry Hill. Enoch, enslaved at Ferry Hill from the 1830s into the 1860s, was portrayed by park ranger and living history interpreter Jerome Bridges. Bridges shared stories from Enoch’s life at the plantation and told of his labors as a field

hand and his role as coachman for the Blackford and Douglas families. The untold stories of Enoch and other enslaved individuals who lived and worked at Ferry Hill Place contribute to the rich heritage of this site. Throughout the afternoon visitors explored the new exhibits, listened to Civil War music performed by the Hancock Civil War String Band and interacted with living history volunteers in their Union campsite. Ferry Hill was the home of Henry Kyd Douglas, youngest officer to General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and author of "I Rode with Stonewall." Ferry Hill is a 19th century plantation house located at 16500 Shepherdstown Pike, Sharpsburg, MD 21782, on the west side of Maryland Route 34 and just north of the Potomac River. It overlooks the C&O Canal and Potomac River into Shepherdstown, WV. The site will be open daily throughout the summer from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information please call the Williamsport Visitor Center at 301-5820813. The C&O Canal NHP is a member of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau. For more information, and to learn about activities and events surrounding the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, see: www.marylandmemories.com. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Preserving America’s colorful Canal era and transportation history, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park is 184.5 miles of adventure. Originally, the C&O Canal was a lifeline for communities and businesses along the Potomac River as coal, lumber, grain and other agricultural products floated down the canal to market. JU LY 2012

H

edgesville is located in Skinner’s Gap on North Mountain, where the original Warm Springs Road (now WV9) passed through from Alexandria, Virginia to Bath (Berkeley Springs). An abundant spring drew the first settler and today serves as Town Spring marked by a protective structure. The spring is reportedly never affected by drought and the water is a persistent 57 degrees. In 1738, the Hedges family began to acquire land just east of the gap. During the French and Indian War in the 1750s, George Washington supervised the construction of a stockade fort in the gap called Fort Hedges. It was one of a string of forts constructed for protection against the French and their Indian allies. The town was laid out in 1832 and established as Hedgesville by the Virginia General Assembly in 1836. At that time, a law was passed making it unlawful to “sit or loiter about Town Spring drinking spirits.” The town was finally incorporated in 1854 n Handcrafted Purses and Totes and in 1870 n Soy Candles, Lotions and Diffusers n Beautiful Handcrafted Quilts the Town Council was given control of the n Windchimes, Birdhouses, Plaques springs. n Willow Tree Figurines and Ornaments A number of antebellum historic Soft Serve Ice Cream July is National structures still line the village streets, Ice Cream Month with all the trimmings including many original log homes.
