Gallery 50 Opening

H

igh quality, curated art remains the standard for Destination ARTS!, coupled with live music, artist demonstrations, and special events — all offered free to the public. Where other communities offer a “First Friday” once a month, Waynesboro presents free live music every single weekend, all year long. During our summer expansion, we will again offer live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from July to October in Waynesboro’s Center Square! Children’s activities and family-friendly educational opportunities abound, including our Art Scavenger Hunt and magic shows. Local authors are spotlighted with book signings and publication parties, and special events include our Second Annual Gallery Wine Walk, scheduled for September 12 and focusing on the art of winemaking. In all, hundreds of artists, authors, and musicians have been featured in downtown Waynesboro! Currently, Destination ARTS! includes five very active year-round art venues: Gallery 50 features numerous works of art, sculpture, jewelry and other media. Gallery 20 East specializes in photography, graphic arts, rotating shows of contemporary art, and special exhibits such as two in May featuring talented artists and musicians from Waynesboro Area Senior High School and retirees from Quincy Village. The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro with its Guild allows for creative expression in clay, and offers a variety of activities and classes for all ages. www. va l leyrev ue . co m

42 West Arts Co-op features our talented local artists who create art work in a variety of mediums and also offers instruction in many of those styles. The Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery offers instruction and classes for children as well as exhibits and special events. We are not resting on our laurels! Destination ARTS! is now sponsoring two monthly forums which bring together writers and songwriters from around the region, giving them a venue to meet, share their work, and collaborate. Plus, in partnership with the Waynesboro Council of Churches, we’re planning a communitybuilding musical collaboration to unveil in December. What’s more, we are working on an exciting NEW initiative Destination INNOVATION! This project, which we hope to launch later this summer or fall, will explore the past, present, and future of innovation in Waynesboro, with a focus on creativity, imagination, innovation, and design. Innovation is the core of Waynesboro’s heritage and one of the keys to its future. Destination INNOVATION! will feature demonstrations and interactive displays of 3D Printing, Robotics, and 3D Holograms, plus examples of work being manufactured by active local industries, and historical displays from our rich innovative past. We will also look to the future by incorporating the “maker” philosophy — “if you can imagine it, you can make it.” JULY 2015– 45th ann iversarY ! 11

Walking Tours By Elizabeth Scott Shatto, Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area

S

ummertime brings numerous opportunities to combine fitness and a walk through history. Grab a friend or bring the whole family along on one of the many guided or self-guided walking tour options in the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. In Frederick, the Historical Society of Frederick County offers 90-minute guided tours. A modest fee ($7 for adults ) is charged for the programs described below. For more information, contact 301-663-1188 or jwinter@frederickhistory.org. Downtown Frederick tours share the history and beauty of downtown Frederick and introduce interesting characters from the past in the ambiance and architecture of the Historic District. Tours start at the Museum of Frederick County History, 24 East Church Street in Frederick, on Saturdays at 11:00 AM and Sundays at 1:30 PM through October. The first Saturday of the month has a Civil War focus. Frederick’s rich African American history is the subject of a walking tour along the All Saints Street corridor starting at 1:30 PM on selected Saturdays. Tours depart from the Roger Brooke Taney House, 121 S. Bentz Street in Frederick, on Saturdays, June 27, July 25, Aug. 22 and www. va l leyrev ue . co m

Sept. 26 at 1:30 p.m. The Seton Way tours share the history of Sisters and Daughters of Charity at the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 339 South Seton Avenue in Emmitsburg. Guided on the hour Tuesday– Fridays, and as a self-guided experience on weekends, the route includes several historic properties associated with this community established in 1809 and still active today. A donation of $3-$5 is suggested. Contact 301-447-6606 or bbassler@setonheritage.org for more information. For those who like to set their own pace and tailor itineraries to their particular interests, self-guided walking tour brochures are available in all three Heart of the Civil War counties through the visitor centers: Carroll (www.carrollcountytourism.org), Frederick (www.visitfrederick.org) and Washington (www.visithagerstown.org). They can also share information about other walking tours on themes such as food, public art, and historic cemeteries. Whether you are an out-of-town visitor or enjoying a “staycation” at home, walking tours are a great way to keep active and discover something new in the Heart of the Civil War. he warm mineral waters of Berkeley Springs have drawn visitors over the centuries from Native Americans to colonial notables like George Washington to today's travelers looking for stress relief and a quirky respite from daily routine. The waters flow at a constant 74 degrees in a small state park in the heart of the historic town. They are freely available for the taking from a public tap or for wading in the largest open display of spring waters in the Blue Ridge. A thriving spa community has grown up around the springs. Berkeley Springs boasts three times as many massage therapists as lawyers with a menu of more than 50 cutting edge spa treatments available daily to 21st century health seekers.
