Robert Kennedy Memorial Presbyterian Church Organized in 1741 at Welsh Run, SE of Mercers-burg on Rt. 416, one of the oldest churches in the Cumberland Valley. Greencastle Established in 1782, historical events include President Washington’s visit during the Whiskey Rebellion, and John Brown’s stay while working on plans for the Harpers Ferry Raid. Firemen’s Display Greencastle. The Rescue Hose Company displays the nation’s oldest workable fire engine built in 1741 and other early firefighting equipment. The Johnston Home Greencastle. Built in the late 1700’s by Dr. Robert Johnston, Surgeon-General during the Revolution. George Washington slept here during a visit at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion. Mason-Dixon Crown-Stone Marker Located S of Greencastle. Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed and marked the line between Md. and Pa. in 1765, placing stone markers at one-mile intervals, with every fifth mile marked by a Crown-Stone. This 105th milestone, is one of the few remaining left. Enoch Brown Park Just N of Greencastle. Massacre site of Enoch Brown, pioneer schoolteacher, and his ten pupils during the uprising of the Pontiac Indians in 1764. Martin’s Mill Covered Bridge Greencastle. One mi. W of Greencastle. The original bridge, built in 1849, crosses the Conococheague Creek. The bridge is 205 ft. long and approx. 28 ft. wide. Brown’s Mill Graveyard Near Greencastle. Monument built to the memory of Revolutionary War heroes pays tribute to the men who fought for independence. Corporal Rihl Monument Greencastle. Corporal William Rihl of the First New York Cavalry was the first union soldier killed on Free Soil in the Civil War, June 22, 1863. Brown’s Mill School Just N of Greencastle, E of U.S. 11. A complete furnished example of a country schoolhouse. Waynesboro Dates back to 1749. he year 1861 will go down in history as perhaps the most patriotic year in our history. More than the months after Pearl Harbor ... more than the months after 9/11. A seventy-five year tension was finally broken. Signs of patriotism were everywhere. Some men wore “secession badges”. Ladies fashioned pinner aprons to resemble Union or Confederate flags. In many communities “Union Poles”, a modern adaptation of the “Liberty Pole” popular during the revolutionary period, would spring up in local communities like Fair View. A hickory tree was chopped down and brought into Hagerstown for this purpose, and it likely served as a flagpole after it was installed. In nearby Middletown, a Union pole alleged to be nearly 100 feet tall was installed on the town green. Some gestures would be odd. Under the title “Practical Patriotism”, the Hagerstown Herald of Freedom and Torchlight reported that a pro-Union slave owner presented a slave boy to a

Pennsylvania regiment that was passing through town as a sign of his loyalty and love of the Union. Some gestures were ugly. On June 5, Dewitt Clinton Rench was visiting friends in Williamsport before his scheduled departure the next day to enlist with the Confederates encamped at Falling Waters. A proUnion mob gathered, jeered him and demanded he leave town. Rather than cause problems for his hosts, he complied, but an exchange of words led to gunfire and Rench was killed. Later in the month, Hagerstown attorney Richard Henry Alvey was arrested by the Union army for his gestures of prosouthern patriotism and was held for over a year. Other gestures would seem to be right out of Hollywood. After a brief campaign to Martinsburg, the 1st Rhode Island State Militia, commanded by Col. Ambrose Burnside, marched back to Washington through Hagerstown via the National Road. ickin’ and Playin’ in Martinsburg and Berkeley County

On Saturday, June 4, the Eastern Panhandle Bluegrass Association will host their first annual Pick & ‘Nic Festival. From 11 am to 6 pm, enjoy the musical talents of local bands, clogging and music workshops, food vendors, arts and crafts, and more! Bring your chairs or blankets and enjoy live entertainment and beautiful scenery at Moose Acres, located just off Route 9 on Douglas Grove Road in Martinsburg. The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) will host a Pickin’ Preview concert on Saturday, June 25 to benefit the South
Berkeley Parade Committee. The concert will feature the musical talents of three groups with West Virginia roots: Midnight Ryde Bluegrass Band, Circa Blue, and Darrell Webb Band. Music will begin at 6:30 pm in the Musselman High School auditorium. But that’s not all, bluegrass fans! The CVB is pleased to be partnering with Hillbilly Daylilies to present another Pickin’ Preview on July 9 at the Bloomin’ Bash. A benefit for the Berkeley County Humane Society, the day will be filled with gardening workshops, a farm animal exhibit, and thousands of daylilies in bloom.
