REFLECTING ON ONE HUNDRED

Sesquicentennial of the American The Mystery of the Lost VMI Cadet Cannon at Shepherdstown Contributed by Gary Gimbel The (4) six pounder cadet cannon as they currently appear in a place of honor at VMI. Photo credit: Craig Swain

Commonwealth of Virginia was prominently cast on top of each barrel. The Adjutant General of Virginia requested that the carriages be painted red with black metal parts, so that whenever the cadets were on parade, the public would instantly identify the cannon as the VMI Cadet Battery.

I

f you visit the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia you will see the cannons of the Cadet Battery displayed on the parade ground. Four 6-pounders sit proudly in front of the statue of Stonewall Jackson, brightly polished with their carriages painted a brilliant red. The “pound” designation indicates the weight of the projectile the cannon fires. However a lone 12-pounder sits off to the side, dull and unpainted.

There were originally six cadet guns in the battery; four 6-pounder smoothbores, and two 12-pounder howitzers. These unique training cannon cast in 1848 were specially designed for the VMI Cadet Battery. Each gun weighed approximately 310 pounds less than a standard cannon so they would be easier for the cadets to move around. The Seal of the 30 MAY 2012

Obviously today one of the original 12-pounder howitzers is missing, but there is no doubt where and when it was lost. That VMI cadet gun, along with three other cannons, was abandoned by the Confederates during the Battle of Shepherdstown, September 19-20, 1862. In his official report to Robert E. Lee, dated September 24, 1862, Chief of Artillery General William N. Pendleton described the loss of four cannon. “I found that four of our pieces had been lost. These, their horses being killed and the men being too weary to drag them away

had been spiked and left.” Federal forces captured the abandoned guns. Pendleton goes on to describe one of those guns. “The brass howitzer 12pounder left by Captain [John] Milledge proves, I regret to report, to have been a gun marked with the coat of arms of our own commonwealth, and belonging to the Virginia Military Institute, and to have been, on these accounts, especially valued. The Confederate States Government will, I hope and earnestly recommend, have of it a fac simile made and returned to the Virginia Military Institute.” Unfortunately the Confederate Government was never in a position to replace the gun. What did the Federal troops do with the little cannon once they took possession of the battlefield? In his www. va l leyrev ue . co m

report Pendleton says what he thinks happened to the four guns left behind, including the VMI cadet gun. “They were, next morning, found by the enemy and thrown over the cliffs.” Does “over the cliffs” mean into the river? Some older residents of Shepherdstown recall hearing stories about a cannon being visible in the river when the water was very low. On the other hand many Civil War buffs have searched in the river and have come up empty handed. The missing VMI Cadet Cannon has not been heard of since the battle and its ultimate fate is unknown. Was it taken north to be melted down or might it still rest on the bottom of the Potomac River near Shepherdstown? MAY 2012

Safe, secure, required “As this deadline approaches, we’re urging the remaining 10 percent of federal benefit recipients who still receive a paper check to make the switch to electronic payments as soon as possible,” says Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios. “The switch to electronic payments is a win-win for federal benefit recipients and for taxpayers. It provides a safer, more secure, more convenient way for Americans to access their federal benefits, while also improving government efficiency and delivering more than $1 billion in savings. The sooner everyone makes the switch, the sooner we'll realize those benefits.” The Treasury Department published a final rule in December 2010 to gradually eliminate paper checks for federal benefit payments. Since May 1, 2011, all people newly applying for federal benefits, including Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Veterans Affairs, Railroad Retirement Board, Office of Personnel Management benefits and other non-tax payments, have had to choose direct deposit or a Direct Express® card when they sign up for the benefit. March 1, 2013, is the final deadline by which all remaining federal benefit check recipients must receive their money electronically. Ninety percent already use direct deposit For the first time in recent history, the number of monthly paper check payments for Social Security, Veterans Affairs and other federal benefits has dropped to

Currently, about 90 percent of Social Security and SSI payments are being made electronically, up from 85 percent in December 2010. “We’ve come a long way in informing Americans that direct deposit is a faster, easier and more reliable way to receive their money, but there is still more work to do,” Rios says. “We are continuing that strong commitment to public education, aggressively reaching out to check recipients with information about how to easily make the transition and helping them through the change.” Make the switch today Federal benefit recipients can switch to electronic payments online at www.GoDirect.org or through the U.S. Treasury Electronic Payment Solution Center toll-free at 1-800-333-1795. erkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name – Berkeley Springs. The waters flow at a constant 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation’s smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia’s splendid outdoors. ß

“The Pirates of Penzance” at the Apollo. Join the historic Apollo Civic Theatre as they present a fresh take on one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operas. Wacky, irreverent and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, “The Pirates of Penzance” spins a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often-ridiculous dictates of honor and duty. The beauty, wit and whimsy of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic score is immersed with a modern sensibility, making it a memorable production that will delight all audiences. Produced by special arrangement with MTI, the Apollo performances will be May 11-13 and 18-20, with Friday and Saturday shows beginning at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30. The Apollo is located at 128 East Martin Street in downtown Martinsburg. Come for the day or the evening and enjoy our downtown dining and shops. Visit www.Apollo-Theatre.org for more details. WV Wine & Arts Festival. On May 26 and 27, the lawn of the historic Boydville mansion will transform into one of the area’s most popular events, the WV Wine & Arts Festival. Sample a variety of wines, visit with artists from around the region, and enjoy great live music. The 16th annual WV Wine & Arts Festival Saturday, May 26 from 11 am to 7 pm and Sunday, May 27 from 1 pm to 6 pm. Proceeds benefit The Arts Centre, a community-based arts organization that hosts educational programs and exhibits throughout the year. For more information, visit www.TheArtCentre.org. Fridays @ 5 Summer Concerts. Shake off the work week each Friday this June and July with Fridays @ 5 on the Town Square in downtown Martinsburg.
