erkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name – Berkeley Springs. The waters flow at a constant 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation’s smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia’s splendid outdoors. ß T h e VA L L EY r e v ue

What Is Long-Term Care? Long-term care involves a variety of services designed to meet a person's health or personal care needs during a short or long period of time. These services help people live as independently and safely as possible when they can no longer perform everyday activities on their own.
What Does Long-Term Care Include? Most Care Provided at Home Long-term care is provided in different places by different caregivers, depending on a person's needs. Most long-term care is provided at home by unpaid family members and friends. Care can also be provided by paid caregivers, usually at home, but also in a facility such as a nursing home. The most common type of long-term care is personal care – help with everyday activities, also called “activities of daily living.” These activities include bathing, dressing, grooming, using the toilet, eating, and moving around – for example, getting out of bed and into a chair. Long-term care also includes community services such as meals, adult day care, and transportation services. These services may be provided free or for a fee.
Health Drives the Need for Care People often need long-term care when they have a serious, ongoing health condition or disability. The need for longterm care can arise suddenly, such as after a heart attack or stroke. Most often, however, it develops gradually, as people get older and frailer or as an illness or disability gets worse.
How Long Does Care Last? Long-term care can last a short time or a long time. Short-term care lasts several 28 M AY 2 013
weeks or a few months while someone is recovering from a sudden illness or injury. For example, a person may get short-term rehabilitation therapy at a nursing facility after hip surgery, then go home. Long-term care can be ongoing, as with someone who is severely disabled from a stroke or who has Alzheimer's disease. Many people can remain at home if they have help from family and friends or paid services. But some people move permanently to a nursing home or other type of facility if their needs can no longer be met at home. About 70 percent of people over age 65 need some type of long-term care during their lifetime. More than 40 percent need care in a nursing home for some period of time. There may come a time when an older adult can no longer live independently due to illness or frailty. See what type of housing options exist for people who need residential care.
Facility-Based Services Providing Full-Time Assistance At some point, support from family, friends, and local programs may not be enough. People who require help full time might move to a residential facility that provides many or all of the long-term care services they need. Facility-based long-term care services include • adult foster care • board and care homes • assisted living facilities • nursing homes • continuing care retirement communities.
Living in a Continuing Care Community Some facilities have only housing and housekeeping, but many also provide personal care and medical services. Many facilities offer special programs for people T h e VA L L EY r e v ue

Board and Care Homes Board and care homes, also called residential care facilities or group homes, are small private facilities, usually with 20 or fewer residents. Rooms may be private or shared. Residents receive personal care and meals and have staff available around the clock. Nursing and medical care usually are not provided on site.
Assisted Living Assisted living is for people who need help with daily care, but not as much help as a nursing home provides. Assisted living facilities range in size from as few as 25 residents to 120 or more. Typically, a few “levels of care” are offered, with residents paying more for higher levels of care. Assisted living residents usually live in their own apartments or rooms and share common areas. They have access to many

Nursing Homes Nursing homes, also called skilled nursing facilities, provide a wide range of health and personal care services. Their services focus on medical care more than most assisted living facilities. These services typically include nursing care, 24-hour supervision, three meals a day, and assistance with everyday activities. Rehabilitation services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy are also available. Some people stay at a nursing home for a short time after being in the hospital. After they recover, they go home. However, most nursing home residents live there permanently because they have ongoing physical or mental conditions that require constant care and supervision.
Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs), also called life care communities, offer different levels of service in one www.vall ey rev ue .co m
location. Many of them offer independent housing (houses or apartments), assisted living, and skilled nursing care all on one campus. Health care services and recreation programs are also provided. In a CCRC, where you live depends on the level of service you need. People who can no longer live independently move to the assisted living facility or sometimes receive home care in their independent living unit. If necessary, they can enter the CCRC's nursing home.
For More Information There are many sources of information about facility-based long-term care. A good place to start is the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 or www.eldercare.gov. You can also call your local Area Agency on Aging, Aging and Disability Resource Center, department of human services or aging, or a social service agency. The information on Long Term Care was provided by NIHSeniorHealth and developed by the Administration on Aging (AoA) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA). onfederate General Stonewall Jackson lost his life on May 10, 1863, eight days after the amputation of his left arm. It is unknown if he died from complications from this surgery. He was diagnosed with succumbing to pleuro-pnemeumonia. Jackson was one of perhaps 15,000 men who died after an amputation during the American Civil War. The Minié ball an innovative, rifled, soft lead bullet caused massive tissue damage and shattered bones. Due to the lack of knowledge of germ theory, these wounds inevitably led to infection and death. Even though, “Experentia Docet”, experience teaches, was the Confederate Medical Department’s motto; both Northern and Southern Civil War surgeons realized quite early that the amputation of a severely devastated limb was the only chance of saving a patient’s life. A minimum of 60,000 amputations were performed by Union and Confederate surgeons. Military surgeons were rightly skewered in the press for bad performance at the onset of the Civil War. A small number of ill-prepared military medical men were suddenly thrust into unforeseen circumstances of biblical proportion. However, by the fall of 1862 vast changes were made to save lives; only the very best surgeons were allowed to perform surgery. Amputations were successfully concluded in less than

ten minutes. The use of anesthesia was perfected. Some 45,000 amputees survived the war. These men needed functioning arms and legs to fulfill their primary goal of returning to their previous occupations. Northern manufacturers bid on Federal contracts to provide prosthetics for northern soldiers. While private funds raised by the Association for the Relief of Maimed Soldiers (ARMS) assisted Confederate amputees in procuring artificial limbs. Amputees benefitted from the rapid advancements in the improvement of artificial limbs. There were 113 United States Army surgeons in 1860. Nursing as a THE VALLEY REVUE

of the American Civil War female profession did not exist. By the conclusion of the war the number of documented professional and volunteer medical personnel: men and women, black and white, free and enslaved rose to a minimum of 27,000. The negative comments and film depictions of Civil War surgeons has overshadowed the monumental achievements of Civil War era civilian relief organizations, as well as the U.S. and C.S. medical departments: within five years, they: created and improved surgical techniques; developed evacuation systems that included the prototype of our very first, first-aid stations; designed transportation vehicles for the ill and injured; designed pavilion hospitals that were built to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of patients; created medical organizations and publications that collected and shared the latest medical innovations and established specialized medicine which included anesthesiology, plastic surgery, neurology, among others. Contrary to popular myth, these doctors were well education and compassionate. U.S. and C.S. physicians recorded over 9 million diagnosed episodes. Of the 620,000 men who died in service during the war, only two died of disease for every battlefield related death. Civil War surgeons had a lower mortality rate in every situation than the British and French doctors in the Crimean War just five years earlier. 335 American surgeons are www.v alley revue.com
documented as having died in service and of those 51 died in battle. For all of their dedication and accomplishments, 150 years later, not one monument exists dedicated to the Civil War surgeon. Creative Mother’s Day Crafts (Family Features) For Mother’s Day, celebrate the nurturing nature of mom with a specially painted flower pot that holds her favorite herbs or flowers. The Chalkboard Herb Pot and Mommy’s Favorite Flower Pot projects don’t require any special skills, so anyone can make a customized gift for mom, grandma, or any other special mom in their life. Supplies and Tools available at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores
Tips for Using Chalkboard Paint * Chalkboard paint comes in classic black, but also comes in other colors as well. * Make sure it’s completely dry before trying to write on it. * Some chalkboard paints require you to condition the paint with chalk before using it. Read label instructions carefully. Tips for Decorating * Using spray paint and hot glue guns may require adult supervision. * Give the kids creative control - it may not turn out perfectly neat, but it will be perfect for mom. * Not sure what to paint on the flower pot? Let the kids dip a hand or foot into the paint and put prints onto the pot. Or, cut fun shapes out of sponges or potatoes and let them stamp around the pot. You can find more ideas, project guides and supplies at www.joann.com.

Family Features) Mothers are incredible people. This year, make sure you properly thank her for all she has done for you by celebrating her with a day she’ll cherish forever. Here are a few ideas to make this Mother’s Day her most memorable yet:
Plant a Garden Together Before you shell out big bucks on chocolates and jewelry, consider a greener gift that mom can treasure from her window. Visit your local garden center or nursery and pick some vibrant beauties you know she’ll swoon over. Supply the gloves, mom’s favorite cocktails and snacks and make an event out of gardening with your favorite lady.
Create Your Own Card No matter how old you are, nothing says it better than construction paper, glitter and a little creativity. If she’s a grandmother, involve the kids and make it a family craft project. Take a trip to your local hobby store to make sure you have all the goods for this tried-and-true ticket to mom’s heart.
Plan a Beautiful Brunch Create a colorful, bountiful brunch for mom. Make a checklist of all the necessary ingredients, ensuring you serve all of her favorites! For a fresh twist on brunch, incorporate the sweet summertime goodness of watermelon and other fresh fruit. Impress her with Breakfast Six Layer Trifle, or make her smile with Watermelon Pancake Sandwiches. Design a homemade menu card, and throw in an arrangement of her favorite blooms for a finishing touch. 58 M AY 2 013
For additional recipes and brunch ideas, visit www.watermelon.org. Mother’s Day brunch wouldn’t be complete without a fabulous serving of fresh fruit. These recipes include the summertime goodness of watermelon for a sweet addition sure to make mom smile.
