Willow Pond Farm Holiday Open House, Nov. 19-20, 2011
The fourth annual Foothills Artists Studio Tour, featuring artists from Fairfield, PA, will be held November 19 and 20, 2011. The Tour, held in conjunction with Willow Pond Farm’s annual Holiday Open House, will feature the following artists: •Dorothea Barrick, painter and print-maker •Becky Carter, watercolors •Jack Handshaw, potter of fine porcelain •Anne Ruppert, mixed media artisan, botanical watercolors and landscapes; fine silver jewelry •Sheila Waters, internationally recognized calligrapher and painter of miniatures The Studio tour will begin with the Holiday Open House at Willow Pond Farm, home of the Pennsylvania Lavender Festival. Farm owner Madeline Wajda said, “We are pleased to support the arts in Fairfield. In the decade that Willow Pond Farm has been in business, the town has developed a significant artists’ colony. And all of this creativity is located within 10 minutes of our farm!” Hours for the tour and open house are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, November 19, and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 20. Better living with hearing loss
H
earing loss affects over 30 million Americans — and it’s not just a problem for the elderly. The majority (65 percent) of people with hearing loss are actually younger than age 65. There are more than six million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and nearly one and a half million are school age, according to the Better Hearing Institute.
Because hearing has a profound effect on quality of life, it’s important to know how to recognize hearing loss, and what can be done about it. Signs of Hearing Loss Do you: •Have trouble hearing over the telephone? •Find it hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking? •Often ask people to repeat what they are saying? •Need to turn up the TV volume so loud that others complain? •Have a problem hearing because of background noise? •Think that others seem to mumble? •Can’t understand when women and children speak to you? Then it’s time to see your doctor and ask about referrals to an otolaryngologist (a specialist who can investigate the cause of hearing loss) or an audiologist (a specialist who will measure hearing loss). Many people think that their physician will tell them during their physicals if they have a hearing problem. But in reality, only about 14 percent of physicians routinely screen for hearing loss. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), 1 in 3 people older than 60 and half of those older than 85 - have hearing loss. Hearing problems can make it difficult to respond to warnings, understand and follow doctor’s advice, and even to hear doorbells and alarms. The good news is that there are many assistive technologies that can make living with hearing loss easier. •Hearing aids of many styles and capabilities, some of which are hardly visible and others which can even sync up with other electronic devices. •Amplified telephones or telephone caption services help facilitate outside communication. •Personal infrared and FM systems make it easier to hear the television, movies, meetings and religious services. •Computerized speech recognition software lets a computer change a spoken message into a readable text document. •Closed-captioned TV (CCTV) shows

n November 20, in Northern Virginia, between Munson's Hill and Bailey's Crossroads, McClellan conducted the most impressive military review of his career. By all contemporary accounts, the weather had dramatically changed to cold, wintry conditions.

Private Robert Knox Sneden of E Company, 40th New York Volunteers (Mozart Regiment), described in his diary leaving his camp in Alexandria, Virginia, at 5 a.m. that morning to participate in a Grand Review. Playing bands and waving flags accompanied the soldiers. Their pride was evident in 34 N OVEMB ER 2 0 1 1
the polished brass of their buttons and the gleam on their guns. Sneden described their arrival at Bailey's "Cross Roads" in vivid terms: It was a fine, though cold and windy day. Patches of snow were on the ground when we arrived there about 10 a.m., which made it muddy in places. Many regiments had overcoats on the men. Ours had not as the colonel wanted to show off the fine uniforms. The brigades were drawn up in columns while general McClellan and staff with President Lincoln rode up and down the lines while the bands played and a battery fired salutes…. The heavy and light artillery with cannon polished up like gold, and the ugly looking black Parrott guns [rifled cannon] were drawn up in a long line, while the cavalry were massed in squadrons. Then about 2 p.m. all marched past in review…. About half of the men had to stand in the cold wind for hours. Nearly everyone was thoroughly chilled. Many soon filled up the camp hospitals… . The President with his bodyguard … was cheered from end to end of the long lines of troops…. The review lasted until 5 p.m. and all were not off the ground until darkness had set in. As the men had brought no rations and had been up and marching since five in the morning, all were hungry, thirsty, and cold. They got to camp much quicker than on going out to the review. They were all much elated and no one ever can forget the splendid military sight [it] afforded. Seneca Rocks This must-see, 900foot tall strata of Tuscarora sandstone dates to the Silurian Age. Part of the Monongahela National Forest and known for their scenic beauty, the rocks are considered by many climbers to be the best climb in the East. When applying the dots, start by applying beads to the center area of the flower, then set it aside to dry, and repeat on the next flower. Once all the centers are dry, you can hold on to them in order to apply Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint to the outside areas of each flower. 3. Now apply Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint to the feathers. Let dry. 4. Assemble the flowers and feathers around the wreath to your liking. Set the pieces out flat on a table and apply a contrasting color of Tulip Beads in a Bottle on each one. Let dry. If your fabric or ribbon is very sheer, work on top of a plastic covering so you can peel up the ribbon after it dries. 3. Once all the strands are dry, loosely drape them around your tree. You can also gather them into a single garland and hang on your mantel. Fold the canvas in half and cut your desired shape through both layers. This will be the front and the back of the frame. 2. Cut the cardboard to fit about 1/4 inch smaller. 3. Take one of the layers, and cut out an inside area. This will be the front of the frame. 4. Take the cardboard piece, add a row of Aleene's Original Tacky Glue to the back, smooth it out with your finger and affix it to the second piece of canvas. 5. Apply Aleene's Original Tacky Glue to

the inside edges of the first piece of canvas and affix to the front of the cardboard, but leave the top two inches unglued so a picture can easily be slid inside. Let dry. 6. Color with Tulip Fabric Markers. 7. Use Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint to add dimensional highlights all over the front of the frame. Let dry. 8. To make your frame hangable, flip it over, back side up, and add a drop of Aleene's Original Tacky Glue on each side at the top and press the strand of ribbon into the glue. Let dry. Cut assorted colors of fabric pieces into varying sizes of squares and rectangles. 2. On a few of the pieces, add Tulip Beads in a Bottle Iron-On Ink Transfers, applying according to package directions. This is to create a variety of looks and textures on each of the pieces of fabric. 3. Set all of the fabric pieces on the top of the journal and arrange them in a mosaic fashion. Make sure to balance the colors and designs so they appear even and interesting. 4. One by one, take a piece of fabric, flip it over and add a drop of Aleene's Fabric Fusion on the back. Spread it evenly around the fabric with your finger and then press the fabric piece in place on the journal. Smooth out any wrinkles using fingers. Let dry. 5. Once all the pieces are glued down and dried, add Tulip Beads in a Bottle Studs and Crystals to each of the fabric pieces that do not have the Tulip Beads in a Bottle Iron-On Ink Transfers. To apply the crystals and studs, add a small drop of Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint and set the stud or crystal on top. Let dry. 6. Built in 1814 by Dr. John Anderson, a portion was used for his office & in 1815, converted one-half of the house into a bank, whose original vault can still be viewed. Robert Kennedy Memorial Presbyterian Church Organized in 1741 at Welsh Run, SE of Mercers-burg on Rt. 416, one of the oldest churches in the Cumberland Valley. Greencastle Established in 1782, historical events include President Washington’s visit during the Whiskey Rebellion, and John Brown’s stay while working on plans for the Harpers Ferry Raid. Firemen’s Display Greencastle. The Rescue Hose Company displays the nation’s oldest workable fire engine built in 1741 and other early firefighting equipment. The Johnston Home Greencastle. Built in the late 1700’s by Dr. Robert Johnston, Surgeon-General during the Revolution. George Washington slept here during a visit at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion. Mason-Dixon Crown-Stone Marker Located S of Greencastle. Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed and marked the line between Md. and Pa. in 1765, placing stone markers at one-mile intervals, with every fifth mile marked by a Crown-Stone. This 105th milestone, is one of the few remaining left. Enoch Brown Park Just N of Greencastle. Massacre site of Enoch Brown, pioneer schoolteacher, and his ten pupils during the uprising of the Pontiac Indians in 1764. Martin’s Mill Covered Bridge Greencastle. One mi. W of Greencastle. The original bridge, built in 1849, crosses the Conococheague Creek. The bridge is 205 ft. long and approx. 28 ft. wide. Brown’s Mill Graveyard Near Greencastle. Monument built to the memory of Revolutionary War heroes pays tribute to the men who fought for independence. Corporal Rihl Monument Greencastle. Corporal William Rihl of the First New York Cavalry was the first union soldier killed on Free Soil in the Civil War, June 22, 1863. Brown’s Mill School Just N of Greencastle, E of U.S. 11. A complete furnished example of a country schoolhouse. Waynesboro Dates back to 1749.
