Better living with hearing loss

H

earing loss affects over 30 million Americans — and it’s not just a problem for the elderly. The majority (65 percent) of people with hearing loss are actually younger than age 65. There are more than six million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and nearly one and a half million are school age, according to the Better Hearing Institute.

Because hearing has a profound effect on quality of life, it’s important to know how to recognize hearing loss, and what can be done about it. Signs of Hearing Loss Do you: •Have trouble hearing over the telephone? •Find it hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking? •Often ask people to repeat what they are saying? •Need to turn up the TV volume so loud that others complain? •Have a problem hearing because of background noise? •Think that others seem to mumble? •Can’t understand when women and children speak to you? Then it’s time to see your doctor and ask about referrals to an otolaryngologist (a specialist who can investigate the cause of hearing loss) or an audiologist (a specialist who will measure hearing loss). Many people think that their physician will tell them during their physicals if they have a hearing problem. But in reality, only about 14 percent of physicians routinely screen for hearing loss. That’s why it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider and get 28 N OV E M B E R 2 011

screened if you exhibit hearing loss signs. Better Living with Hearing Loss It’s an unpleasant reality - aging can take a toll on hearing. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), 1 in 3 people older than 60 and half of those older than 85 - have hearing loss. Hearing problems can make it difficult to respond to warnings, understand and follow doctor’s advice, and even to hear doorbells and alarms. The good news is that there are many assistive technologies that can make living with hearing loss easier. •Hearing aids of many styles and capabilities, some of which are hardly visible and others which can even sync up with other electronic devices. •Amplified telephones or telephone caption services help facilitate outside communication. •Personal infrared and FM systems make it easier to hear the television, movies, meetings and religious services. •Computerized speech recognition software lets a computer change a spoken message into a readable text document. •Closed-captioned TV (CCTV) shows

clunky ones you may remember. There are sizes and styles to fit every lifestyle, and many are winning awards for their design. •Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) hearing aids fit into the ear canal and are virtually invisible. •Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aids are much sleeker, smaller and more discreet than their predecessors. •Open-Fit BTEs are nearly invisible behind the ear and use a thin plastic tube or a thin wire to amplify sound into the ear canal. Hearing Aid FAQ •Are hearing aid batteries interchangeable among manufacturers? Battery dimensions are standardized across all brands. All sizes are the same just look for the color standard to find your battery size. •Should I open the door on my hearing aid when it’s not in use? Yes - it is a good idea to open the battery door on your hearing aid when you are not using it. This reduces battery drain and may allow air in to remove any moisture buildup. •How should I store my batteries for best hearing aid battery life? To get maximum hearing aid battery life, keep batteries at room temperature. Heat can shorten hearing aid battery life and a damp location like the refrigerator is not recommended. Also, never carry loose batteries in your pocket or purse. Contact with metal items like keys or coins can short-circuit the battery. spoken dialogue and sounds in a text display. All TVs now sold with screens of at least 13 inches must have built-in captioning. Even the seemingly little things can make a big difference. For older seniors using hearing aids, getting the small batteries out of the package can be an exercise in frustration, as can losing those tiny batteries. Stress can also cause or exacerbate hearing loss. Packaging can ease this frustration and stress. The EZ Turn & Lock packaging for Energizer hearing aid batteries is an example of a user-focused solution that keeps the batteries from falling out, but has an easy-to-turn dial that lets you get them out when you need them with no trouble at all. Find out more at www.energizer.com. You can learn more about hearing loss at The Better Hearing Institute www.betterhearing.org, and the Hearing Loss Association of America www.hearingloss.org. All the Better to Hear You With There are a surprising number of people who could benefit from hearing aids that don’t wear them. But those that do wear them report a significant improvement in quality of life. A survey by the Better Hearing Institute found that, of the hearing aid wearers that responded: •71 percent reported more effective communications. •56 percent had a better social life. •55 percent reported better relationships at home. •56 percent had better relationships in the workplace. •48 percent had improved emotional health. Today’s hearing aids are not the big,

ing experts at NIDCD say you should ask a few questions: •What features would be most useful to me? •Does the audiologist perform real ear measures to verify the performance of the hearing aids? •What is the total cost of the hearing aids? Do the benefits of newer technologies outweigh the higher costs? •Is there a trial period to test the hearing aids? (Most manufacturers allow a 30- to 60-day trial period during which aids can be returned for a refund.) What fees are nonrefundable if the aids are returned after the trial period? •How long is the warranty? Can it be extended? Does the warranty cover future maintenance and repairs? •Can the audiologist make adjustments and provide servicing and minor repairs? Will loaner aids be provided when repairs are needed? •What instruction does the audiologist provide? Not all insurance will cover hearing aids, but AARP members can save 20 percent on hearing aids and hearing care through the AARP Hearing Care Program provided by HearUSA. REFLECTING ON ONE HUNDRED

Sesquicentennial Commemoration Excerpt from

The Grand Review of November 20, 1861

A New Union Army Parades at Bailey’s Crossroads, Virginia By Evelyn L. Haught Published by Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance 3713 S. George Mason Drive, Suite 1302, Falls Church, Virginia 22041 703-820-2239 • www.latcra.org ©Copyright 2007, Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance

n November 20, in Northern Virginia, between Munson's Hill and Bailey's Crossroads, McClellan conducted the most impressive military review of his career. By all contemporary accounts, the weather had dramatically changed to cold, wintry conditions.

O

Private Robert Knox Sneden of E Company, 40th New York Volunteers (Mozart Regiment), described in his diary leaving his camp in Alexandria, Virginia, at 5 a.m. that morning to participate in a Grand Review. Playing bands and waving flags accompanied the soldiers. Their pride was evident in 34 N OVEMB ER 2 0 1 1

the polished brass of their buttons and the gleam on their guns. Sneden described their arrival at Bailey's "Cross Roads" in vivid terms: It was a fine, though cold and windy day. Patches of snow were on the ground when we arrived there about 10 a.m., which made it muddy in places. Many regiments had overcoats on the men. Ours had not as the colonel wanted to show off the fine uniforms. The brigades were drawn up in columns while general McClellan and staff with President Lincoln rode up and down the lines while the bands played and a battery fired salutes…. AND FIFTY YEARS PAST

of the American Civil War

The heavy and light artillery with cannon polished up like gold, and the ugly looking black Parrott guns [rifled cannon] were drawn up in a long line, while the cavalry were massed in squadrons. Then about 2 p.m. all marched past in review…. About half of the men had to stand in the cold wind for hours. Nearly everyone was thoroughly chilled. Many soon filled up the camp hospitals… . The President with his bodyguard … was cheered from end to end of the long lines of troops…. The review lasted until 5 p.m. and all were not off the ground until darkness had set in. As the men had brought no rations and had been up and marching since five in the morning, all were hungry, thirsty, and cold. They got to camp much quicker than on going out to the review. They were all much elated and no one ever can forget the splendid military sight [it] afforded. All the cooks in camp were at work for half of the night when we returned at 7 p.m. in a drizzling rain. For Evelyn L. Haught's complete essay as a PDF file, please see The Grand Review of November 20, 1861, A New Union Army Parades at Bailey's Crossroads, VA. online at www.latca.org/textpages/assets/ GrandReviewbyELHaught.pdf www. v al l eyrevue. com

www.berkeleysprings.com Berkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa. Yet the magic of the springs prevailed, and the town and surrounding area are known by their name – Berkeley Springs. The waters flow at a constant 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. You may still drink freely and fill your jugs at Lord Fairfax’s public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools in the nation’s smallest state park. The town has endured cycles of notoriety, fashion, war and modern progress, but remains the Country’s First Spa, a quiet, friendly haven surrounded by West Virginia’s splendid outdoors. ß

flower. As far as color, you can choose if you want all gold or all red Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint or a combination of both. 2. When applying the dots, start by applying beads to the center area of the flower, then set it aside to dry, and repeat on the next flower. Once all the centers are dry, you can hold on to them in order to apply Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint to the outside areas of each flower. 3. Now apply Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint to the feathers. Let dry. 4. Assemble the flowers and feathers around the wreath to your liking. Starlight Scrap Holiday Garland Materials Needed: Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint Metal 28788 Semiprecious 28791 Semiprecious 28792 Semiprecious 28794 Assorted rolls of ribbon Assorted skinny strips of fabric in different textures, colors and shapes Assorted rolls of sequins Assorted yarns and fibers 1. Set the pieces out flat on a table and apply a contrasting color of Tulip Beads in a Bottle on each one. Let dry. If your fabric or ribbon is very sheer, work on top of a plastic covering so you can peel up the ribbon after it dries. 3. Once all the strands are dry, loosely drape them around your tree. You can also gather them into a single garland and hang on your mantel. Cartoon Canvas Ornament Frame Materials Needed: Tulip Fabric Markers Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint Semiprecious 28792 Semiprecious 28790 Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue 1/4 yard of blank canvas Scissors Pinking shears Ribbon Thin cardboard 1. To make your frame hangable, flip it over, back side up, and add a drop of Aleene's Original Tacky Glue on each side at the top and press the strand of ribbon into the glue. Let dry. New Year's Dream Journal Materials Needed: Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint Semiprecious 28790 Semiprecious 28791 Semiprecious 28792 Tulip Beads in a Bottle Iron-On Ink Transfer Butterfly 28805 Floral 28812 Tulip Beads in a Bottle Studs and Crystals Metal Studs 28813 Pearl Crystals 28814 Gemstone Crystals 28816 Aleene's Fabric Fusion Permanent Dry Cleanable Fabric Adhesive Hardback journal Scissors Iron Assorted fabric scraps in bright holiday jewel tones: red, green gold, yellow, blue and purple 1. Cut assorted colors of fabric pieces into varying sizes of squares and rectangles. 2. On a few of the pieces, add Tulip Beads in a Bottle Iron-On Ink Transfers, applying according to package directions. This is to create a variety of looks and textures on each of the pieces of fabric. 3. Set all of the fabric pieces on the top of the journal and arrange them in a mosaic fashion. Make sure to balance the colors and designs so they appear even and interesting. 4. One by one, take a piece of fabric, flip it over and add a drop of Aleene's Fabric Fusion on the back. Spread it evenly around the fabric with your finger and then press the fabric piece in place on the journal. Smooth out any wrinkles using fingers. Let dry. 5. Once all the pieces are glued down and dried, add Tulip Beads in a Bottle Studs and Crystals to each of the fabric pieces that do not have the Tulip Beads in a Bottle Iron-On Ink Transfers. To apply the crystals and studs, add a small drop of Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint and set the stud or crystal on top. Let dry. 6. Visit the Shoppes of Historic Hedgesville during the holiday season Hedgesville, as a political entity, is older than the State of West Virginia, being incorporated under the laws of Virginia in 1854. The Town was platted in 1830 from land owned by Josiah Hedges and Mary Claycomb at a location known as Skinners Gap in North Mountain, seven miles north of Martinsburg. It was located at the site of a natural limestone spring which had been an Indian meeting place. Our charming old town has a many experiences to offer! This area is rich in history. Take a stroll around the town and admire the historic buildings and gorgeous architecture. Find a unique gift at one of our specialty shops, explore our antiques stores, enjoy with an ice cream cone. Come join us – plan a visit to Hedgesville this holiday season.
