f you are drawn to ghost stories and eerie experiences, you might like to know that Americans were similarly fascinated during the Civil War. Whether inspired by the macabre writings of Poe and Twain, ghoulish appearances in popular plays (the “ghost glide” stage device was new), or a growing interest in Spiritualism, 19th century popular culture was captivated by other worldly adventures. October offers numerous nearby opportunities to step into the spooky past. Sharpsburg Historic Ghost Tours (www.Sharpsburgtours.com) has a menu of guided experiences on several themes, all family friendly and scheduled by appointment. The Carroll County Public Library offers Westminster ghost tours, including some hair-raising Civil War tales, on several evenings in late October. Register in advance at www.library.carr.org. Historic Uniontown will host a ghost tour on October 17 to benefit local preservation efforts. www.historicuniontown.org Frederick is home to the www. va l leyrev ue . co m
Candlelight Ghost Tours, a stroll through the historic district featuring local tales of the paranormal and bizarre. Cemetery tours through Mt. Olivet Cemetery are enlivened with stories of some of Maryland’s most noteworthy figures. Both are offered on weekends and by appointment at www.marylandghosttours.com. In her book This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, Drew Gilpin Faust suggests that preoccupation with supernatural phenomena was a way of “connecting death and life and making that separation seem less frightening.” Maybe that holds true today, or maybe a good scare is just plain fun.
