Geocaching offers a new way to explore Civil War history By Auni Gelles
L
ooking for a new way to explore historic places? You’re invited to discover the Heart of the Civil War GeoTrail (www.heartofthecivilwar.org/ geo-trail), which launches October 1. The new trail includes 15 geocaches hidden at Civil War sites in Maryland’s Carroll, Frederick, and Washington Counties. According to geocaching.com, geocaching is “a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.” No state experienced the Civil War quite like Maryland. With one foot in the North and another in the South, residents of this border state contributed significant resources to both sides of the war effort. Between 1861 and 1865, the Civil War impacted nearly every Maryland resident. Some families faced financial ruin after troops ravaged their land. Thousands of fathers, sons and 10 O CTO B ER 2016
brothers became casualties of war. For enslaved Marylanders, the conflict ultimately brought about freedom as the new state constitution of November 1864 abolished the practice. Marylanders witnessed three major military movements during the Civil War: the Maryland (also known as Antietam) Campaign in the fall of 1862, the Gettysburg Campaign in the summer of 1863, and the march to Washington led by Jubal Early in the summer of 1864. Geocachers of all levels can visit significant sites from each of these three operations on the new GeoTrail. To participate, create a free geocaching.com account and search for the Heart of the Civil War. A trackable geocoin will be awarded to the first 200 geocachers (while supplies last) who find at least 13 caches on the trail and validate their passports in person at the Newcomer House at Antietam National Battlefield or at the Visitor Centers in Westminster, Frederick, or Hagerstown. See you on the GeoTrail! ThE VALLEY R Ev u E
