Sesquicentennial Commemoration
The Battle of Ball’s Bluff Contributed by Kyle F. Wichtendahl Ball’s Bluff Cemetery today Photo credit: Wikipedia
n October 21, 1861 Union and Confederate troops fought the Battle of Ball's Bluff along the Potomac River near Leesburg, Virginia. Though small in scale, the battle marked the second major Union defeat within twenty-five miles of Washington, DC since the war began six months earlier. In October 1861, Union General Charles Stone commanded a division of the Federal Army of the Potomac. Stone commanded a fourteen mile sector of the Potomac River stretching from Noland’s Ferry to Edwards Ferry. Directly across the river, Colonel Nathaniel Evans commanded a mixed Confederate brigade, occupying the strategic town of Leesburg, Va. Neither commander was under orders to actively engage the enemy; both were to remain vigilant, closely observing their adversaries. The Battle at Ball’s Bluff began with a night reconnaissance on October 20th. Captain Chase Philbrick and about twenty men of the 15th Massachusetts crossed the Potomac at Harrison’s Island and climbed the steep Ball’s Bluff to enter Confederate Virginia. Inexperienced and working in darkness, Philbrick mistakenly reported an unguarded Confederate camp (the present-day Potomac Crossing housing development near US 15).

Seeing an opportunity, Gen. Stone ordered Col. Charles Devens and 300 men of the 15th Massachusetts to cross the Potomac and attack the camp at dawn. By daylight, Devens discovered no Confederate troops. Undaunted, Stone converted Devens’s assignment into a reconnaissance in force toward Leesburg, ordering the balance of the 15th and part of the 20th Massachusetts to join Devens across the river. Stone also ordered one of his brigade commanders, Col. Edward Baker, to take personal command. Baker, a sitting Republican Senator from Oregon, was a personal friend of President Abraham Lincoln. When war broke out, Baker accepted a commission as colonel of volunteers, but retained his seat in the Senate. Baker had served briefly in the Mexican War, but was not a professional soldier. Arriving late in the morning, on the Maryland shore opposite Ball’s Bluff, Baker found the situation dramatically transformed. Confederate infantry and cavalry were now hotly engaging Col. Devens’ troops. Baker quickly decided to press the fight, rather than withdraw his men, and began sending reinforcements across to Virginia, personally crossing to join the fighting several hours later. Col. Baker had more than enough THE VALLEY REVUE C A L EN DA R MAGA Z IN E

of the American Civil War troops at his disposal to outmatch any Confederate force near Leesburg. However, the Potomac at Ball’s Bluff is deep and availability of boats was limited, making the crossing difficult and tedious. The Confederates had no such obstacles to reinforcements. By late afternoon, numbers began to favor the Confederates, and the Union line began to weaken. At about 4:30, a rebel bullet killed Edward Baker, plunging the Federal force into a command crisis. Just before dusk, a final Confederate charge broke the Union line. Backed against a steep embankment and the Potomac River, routed Federal troops had no easy way to flee. Of the 1700 Union soldiers engaged at Ball’s Bluff, 550 were trapped and captured. 450 more were wounded or killed, many drowning in the river. In contrast, Confederates suffered only 150 casualties. While Confederates celebrated another victory, Federal embarrassment was great. In the wake of the Battle of Bull Run in July, the debacle on the Potomac was another black eye to the
Union war effort. The death of Baker, the only US Senator to be killed in combat, Col. Edward D. Baker, proved 1811-1861 demoralizPhoto credit: Library of Congress ing the Northern public. The defeat also led to the first Joint Congressional Committee on the Conduct of the War. The committee gave Congress a more active role in military affairs and shifted the balance of war powers in the Federal government. Today the battlefield is mostly preserved in Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park, operated by the State of Virginia. The park is home to the nation’s third smallest National Cemetery, containing the graves of 54 Union soldiers. The park is open daily, free of charge.

History is alive and well in Berkeley Springs, the country’s first spa, part of daily life for both residents and visitors. THE STORY OF BERKELEY SPRINGS. Berkeley Springs, a fountainhead of warm mineral waters frequented by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in the New World, are at the heart of a mountain spa community in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. First noted as Medicine Springs in 1747 on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson’s father, the waters for many centuries have drawn visitors seeking health and relief from the stress of everyday life. In 1776, George Washington’s family and friends drew up a plat of 134 lots, named the streets, and incorporated The Town of Bath, invoking the muses of the renowned English spa.
