Collecting for Profit

E

veryone who collects does so in the hopes of eventually making a profit on their collection. The savvy collector knows how to build a premier collection on a budget and how to obtain great value within the collection. There are several factors to consider when collecting for profit: First of all you must remember that collectibles run in cycles. What is hot today may not be tomorrow. For example, we all remember the Beanie Baby craze. Collectors were buying them at a fever pitch ten years ago. Now they are worth a small fraction of what they once were. The same is true for Cabbage Patch Kids as well as other collectibles. You need to focus on items that will have resale value when the time comes to sell. When you see the market falling on the items you have in your collection, don’t hesitate to sell them and move into another area of collecting. Another factor to consider when collecting is condition. Items that are in pristine condition are always in demand. Take coins for example. A common date Morgan silver dollar is worth around $20 in average condition. A same date Morgan dollar in gem condition is worth many times more than the average coin just because of condition. Vintage toys in mint condition with the original box are worth much more than ones that have been taken out of the box and have heavy wear. You must also take into consideration the rarity of the items. Coins with low mintage are usually worth much more than common date coins with high mintage. Looking at rarity is very important when considering the purchase of an item. The more rare an item is, the better your chances are for eventually making a profit on it. Common date wheat pennies sold for around

three cents each forty years ago and sell for the same price today. On the other hand, a rare 1909 S VDB penny sells for many times the price it did forty years ago. Always remember that eventually the rarity of an item will be taken into consideration when a collector buys your items from you. Investors who buy collectibles for long term value usually look for complete collections. Ones that need completion always bring less than ones that are intact and need no more work to complete. Investors and collectors are completely different. Most investors just want high grade collectibles to put away for long term gain and collectors have fun attaining items to put into their collections. Both can make great profit if they pay attention to a few factors while putting their plans into action. The collectibles market is a passion and love for many people from all walks of life. Whether you are a weekend warrior just looking through yard sales and flea markets for treasures, or a seasoned veteran looking for that elusive spot to fill in your collection, remember to have fun in your search. This industry can be hours of fun and enjoyment. It can also be a great source of income for those who truly know what they are doing. Knowledge is your best asset. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dave Barrett is the founder of Pa Collectors Society and appeared on the nationally televised show “Making Money” in the mid to late 1990’s. He has helped collectors with acquiring and selling some of the top coin, currency, and other collections since starting The Society in 2008. The network of collectors who have bought and sold to The Society is worldwide. His book “Making Money in Collectibles is due to be published in Mid 2014.

Why Do Black Belt Martial Artists Get Beat Up?

Jeffrey M. Miller SPS, DTI If you want to learn to defend yourself, you join a karate school, right? After all, anyone with a black belt and shiny trophies should be able to teach you how to survive one of the worst situations that could ever happen to you... Right? You and I both know appearances are often very deceiving. What seems to be one thing is often something very different. And, learning selfdefense from a karate-expert, at least a modern-day one, is no exception. How can I say this? What do I have against karate students, teachers, and black belts? I’ll start by saying that I have nothing against dedicated students and teachers of the martial arts - regardless of style. In fact, I commend and respect them for their dedica-

Why do I question their ability to defend themselves, even in light of having attained black belt or winning trophies in one or more tournaments? One word... Statistics. Crime reports are rife with accounts of people trained in the martial arts, many holding black belt rank, getting beaten and worse by common street thugs - fighters with no formal training in any combat art. How can this be? Aren’t students learning how to deal with a violent attacker? Isn’t that what you learn in karate class? For now, let’s just explore the possibility that maybe, just

maybe, there’s more to being able to defend yourself than learning a few cool moves. Maybe, just maybe, belt color or trophies tell us little to nothing about how someone will fair in a real-world attack against someone bent on beating, breaking or killing you. Maybe. Just as there are dozens of reasons to take up martial arts training, there are dozens of benefits one can gain as well. But, if your goal is to learn how to effectively defend yourself against a real life bad guy, it will take more than a piece of cloth and a big shiny trophy, unless of course you plan on using the trophies as weapons (I would...). In fact, it will take many of the things I find to be seriously lacking in most of the conventional karate programs I’ve seen. If you’re going to win against an assailant who has nothing to lose and everything to gain, you’re going to have to make sure that you arm yourself with the same tools he’s carrying in his arsenal. Things like... A commitment to winning - no matter what Survival Instinct Superior Attitude A Complete Disregard for “doing it right,” and... No Delusional Belief about so-called “fair-play” Until karate students can separate the traits developed for sportsmanship from those needed to survive in a life-threatening situation, I’m afraid the outcome will be the same. And that is... ...he who is fighting to win - to survive - will always win over those who are simply going through the motions. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jeffrey M. Miller SPS, DTI is the founder and master instructor of Warrior Concepts International in Sunbury, Pa. A senior teacher in the Japanese warrior art of Ninjutsu, he specializes in teaching the ancient ways of self-protection and personal development lessons in a way that is easily understood and put to use by modern Western students and corporate clients. Through their martial arts training, his students and clients learn proven, time-tested lessons designed to help them create the life they’ve always dreamed of living, and the skills necessary for protecting that life from anything that might threaten it. s we age we seem to focus on other alignments besides our bone health. Keeping your bones strong isn’t just about avoiding fractures, it is about preserving and enjoying the life that you are living. You can start about learning about your current bone health. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation and American Bone Health, all women age 65 and older and men age age 70 older should get a bone mineral density test. Your healthcare provider can discuss the findings with you and work up a plan to keep your bones strong. We can assure that are bones are receiving their adequate nutrition by taking the required recommended dosages of Calcium and Vitamin D. It is recommended that women over the age of 50 take at least 1,000mg and Men 1,200 of Calcium and adults over the age of 50 receive at least

600 IU of Vitamin D. There are many ways to be proactive about your bone health besides supplements. Talk with your doctor regarding the medications that you are currently taking. Some medications may cause bone loss or balance issues that can lead to falls or fractures. Have your vision checked annually to make sure that you are seeing your world clearly. Do not crash diet or skip meals. Exercising frequently. Use your assistive
