Free Workshop for People Joining Medicare People who are new to Medicare are invited to attend a “Get Ready for Medicare: The Basics for People Who Are Joining”, a free community workshop on Friday October 20th , 2017 from 10am-12pm in the Northumberland County Human Services Building B, 322 N. 2nd Street, Sunbury, PA. The event is sponsored by APPRISE, a program of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging. This workshop is specifically designed to assist people who will be enrolling in Medicare, either because they will turn 65 years old or because they receive Social Security disability benefits. The workshop is also appropriate for spouses and caregivers. Roughly 100,000 Pennsylvanians enroll in Medicare each year. Many struggle to make the right decisions about their coverage because they do not have clear information. The Medicare enrollment process is complex and there are key decisions that must be made according to strict deadlines. There are also programs available that can help Medicare enrollees save money. Beneficiaries are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to get information from highly trained people who will offer unbiased advice. To register, please call 570-4952384. The Northumberland County Agency on Aging is a local affiliate of APPRISE, a program of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, the designated State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) in Pennsylvania. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY ROAD TO RECOVERY PROGRAM SEEKS VOLUNTEERS Imagine being diagnosed with cancer, but you don’t have transportation to your cancer treatments. Every patient in our area miss potentially lifesaving cancer treatment because they are too ill to drive themselves and are unable to find a ride. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery® program provides free transportation to and from cancer treatment. The program needs volunteers to coordinate rides, as well as volunteer drivers. For more information about volunteering or about the American Cancer Society’s programs and services visit www.cancer.org or call 1-800-227-2345. ufn Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority Announces Buffalo Valley Rail Trail Work Day On Saturday, November 4, from 10am to noon Meet at Earl’s Bicycle Store on Fairground Road BVRA invites the community to volunteer for the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail Work Day coming up on Saturday, Nov 4, from 10am to noon. Volunteers will meet at Earl’s Bicycle Store on Fairground Road (please park in the adjacent market lot) and fan out along the trail. Some will be working with the maintenance crew on brush clearing at key intersections and others will be picking up trash. It is helpful but not required for volunteers to arrive with transportation. It is even possible to ride to cleanup areas by bike, especially since participants will not have to transport the collected trash, other than bringing it to a road crossing for the crew to collect. Community members of all ages (children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult) are invited to volunteer their time to maintaining this great community asset. Participants will be provided with snacks, equipment and directions when they arrive at Earl’s.
Everyone should dress for the weather and the activity. Long pants and long sleeves will protect from thorns and rough underbrush. Long hair should be pulled back or covered. Avoid wearing fleece or knits which catch burrs and thorns. Sturdy footwear is recommended. We will have gloves, trash bags, buckets, and some trash grabbers, but participants are also welcome to bring their own.An RSVP is helpful but not required.
