Mitchael and the Sam’s Club Pharmacists are offering time-saving, stressreducing tips to help caregivers support their loved ones while also maintaining their own well-being. • Focus on food and fitness. Maintain a healthy, energy-boosting diet that includes organic fruits and vegetables, lean protein and vitamins. Try to stay active, as well. To keep yourself accountable, consider using a wearable device that tracks your daily diet and activity level. • Log on. To save time and effort, shop online when possible. In today’s digital world, it’s easy to get everything you need with the click of a button. Companies like

Sam’s Club provide everything from groceries to personal care products online for those who don’t have time to make it into a club. • Give yourself a break. Convene a family meeting to discuss any challenges that you’re facing and see what others can do to lighten your load. Identify someone who can fill in for you for periods of time, so you can take breaks outside of the home to relax and refresh. Doing so will likely help you return to your role with even more energy. • Seek support. Find a caregiver support group that can help you make connections with others who understand your perspective. existing resources that are designed to support caregivers, as well. For example, Sam’s Club recently launched a new program for family caregivers, including a dedicated webpage that helps members find the products, expert advice and savings they need to make caregiving easier. Visit SamsClub. com/caregiving or the kiosks in select locations around the country for more information. “As the number of caregivers rises, so does the importance of offering resources that make their lives easier,” says TurnerMitchael. “As a club of the community, we are working to do just that, so caregivers can focus on what is most important – the health of their loved ones and themselves.” • Engage your employer. Around 42 million Americans act as caregivers while also working outside of the home, according to AARP. If you are juggling work and home responsibilities, ask your manager about perks or policies that may help you find balance, such as flexible work schedules, emergency time off or onsite eldercare. Neglecting your own health does no one any favors, so don’t let caregiving mean the end of self-care. With the right resources and resolve, rest assured that you can provide the best care possible while also maintaining your own health.

Handy Items Every gardener needs top-notch tools to make regular tasks more comfortable and convenient. For example, pruning is no fun with shears that are rusted or hard to handle. To upgrade your gift recipient’s gardening tool box, look for a rust-resistant stainless steel blade and a no-slip rubber grip. For safety, the shears should be able to lock into place when not in use. Gifts that Keep on Giving When there’s a chill in the air, consider focusing your attention on gardening gifts that can be used indoors. One unique gift for a gardener of any level is an indoor garden kit, such as those from the Miracle-Gro AeroGarden line of gardens. Hydroponic gardens like the AeroGarden grow fresh herbs, vegetables, and flowers in water, not soil. And they actually grow five times faster than soil gardens. Automated LED lights and reminders to add water make growing fun for seasoned gardeners and easy for even those with no gardening experience. Well-suited for a kitchen countertop -- this is a safe, healthy and easy way to grow fresh herbs and vegetables year-round. To learn more visit AeroGarden.com. Enjoy the Results Half the fun of gardening is reaping the benefits of one’s labor. Help gardeners turn their harvest into something delicious. An herb chopper makes a great stocking stuffer. To speed up herb preparation and help gardeners avoid bruising the leaves they worked so hard to grow, look for one with multiple rounded blades. Another great gift for herb and vegetable gardeners is a salad dressing maker that has pre-marked settings for oil, vinegar and herbs, which can take the guess work out of meal preparation during busy week nights. With a few creative ideas, it’s easy to make a gardener smile this holiday season.

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) and Department of Health (DOH), in a continued effort to maintain the health and wellness of older Pennsylvanians, are highlighting two evidence-based fall prevention and awareness programs for older Pennsylvanians: • Healthy Steps for Older Adults (HSOA), PDA’s evidence-based fall prevention program, which will soon be promoted to other State Units on Aging; and • A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls, a structured evidence-based group intervention program delivered by DOH. Healthy Steps for Older Adults is a nationally recognized community and evidence-based fall risk screening, assessment, and education program for adults aged 50 and older; and is designed to reduce the incidence of falls, improve overall health, and provide medical referrals and aging service resources. “Falling is not a normal part of aging, yet falls are the leading cause of injury for Pennsylvanians 65 years of age and older,” said Secretary of Aging Teresa Osborne. “To date, nearly 40,000 Pennsylvanians have participated in the program and the success stories are inspiring, whereby participants have reported changes in attitudes and behaviors where they are now eating more healthful meals, identifying and arranging for home repairs and improvements to reduce in-home falls, and experiencing increased confidence and energy levels.” Since 2005, HSOA has provided the following core elements: • Screenings, which include both demonstration of physical skills and a review of individual’s environment, health, and lifestyle; • Education, which includes the Healthy Steps in Motion exercise program for people of all fitness levels, and “Preventing Falls” and “Staying Active” workshops; and • Referrals to physicians, therapists, exercise groups, home modifications programs and other health supports facilities and fall prevention workshops. A Matter of Balance is an 8-week structured group intervention that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and

increase activity levels. Participants also learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. “Anyone can be seriously injured by a fall, particularly older Pennsylvanians who are at greater risk of suffering bone fractures,” said Secretary of Health Dr. Karen Murphy. “Fall prevention education is important to reduce injuries and suffering. For older residents, learning better balance techniques can lead to increased confidence, physical activity, and overall general wellness.” In addition to being well received by older adults, HSOA has also won several awards, including the Council of State Government Silver Award for exemplary falls programs and the National Media Bronze Award for consumer outreach. Given the success of PDA’s fall prevention program and to further promote its low-cost and high value, HSOA can be easily adopted for use in additional sites where seniors congregate, such as fitness clubs and high-rise senior apartments. Moreover, in consideration of the Older Americans Act 2016 Reauthorization, whereby Title IIID funds for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Services are reserved for programs that meet evidence-based criteria for effectiveness, PDA is pleased to announce that the Healthy Steps for Older Adults program, which meets the criteria necessary for reimbursement, will be promoted to other State Units on Aging. “A single fall can easily be a life changer for the older adult and their family members who may quickly find themselves needing to either provide or arrange for care,” said Secretary Osborne. “Our foundation includes preventing instability of health and wellness by engaging, empowering and enabling older Pennsylvanians to age in place with dignity; which is why we are so pleased to share our fall prevention experience, the successes we’ve achieved, and the expertise we’ve accumulated by making Healthy Steps for Older Adults available to others.” The opportunity to promote these evidence-based fall prevention programs, that have positively impacted the quality of life for older Pennsylvanians, is timely as the Departments of Aging and Health observe September 22, 2016, as National Falls Prevention Awareness Day in the commonwealth. For more information regarding the departments health and wellness programs, please visit www.aging.pa.gov and www.health.pa.gov.

Buying a Vehicle? Timing Can Mean the Best Deal

Buying a vehicle? While your negotiation tactics matter, experts say that timing is a bigger factor than you may realize when it comes to getting a great deal on a new car. “The time of year, the time of the month and even the time of day can affect the deal you get and what’s available for purchase,” says Brian Moody, executive editor of Autotrader. “Timing can be everything if you want the best deal.” Moody and the experts at Autotrader are offering some important timing insights to those on the hunt for a vehicle. • Show up late. At the end of the day, sales and finance professionals are ready to head home. But a smart salesperson will not let a serious potential customer walk away

Wood

just because the dealership is ready to close shop. Provided the salesperson is dealing with a serious buyer, he or she may make concessions during late hours to speed up negotiations. Of course, shoppers may be tired and ready to go home, too, causing the plan to backfire. So make sure you’re well-rested and ready to hang in there for the long haul if you decide to pursue this strategy. • Wait it out: Know what you want? Don’t rush to the dealership. If possible, consider waiting until the end of a month or even the end of a quarter to make your vehicle purchase. “Just like at the end of the year, dealers have monthly and quarterly sales goals. If they’re just shy of the target, they could be more motivated to get the deal done,” suggests Moody. • Be in-season. The season you purchase your vehicle matters. For example, late summer and early fall is when new-model-year vehicles are rolling into dealers’ inventories. Some of the best deals are on “leftover” models. For instance, a 2016 model may be steeply discounted once 2017 models arrive. In some cases, dealers will even have the previous model year in stock. For example, Autotrader. com still has listings for brand-new 2015 model vehicles. Keep in mind though, that since a leftover model is already outdated, it’s automatically worth less than a car from the latest model -- which means you’ll get a lower price if you resell. If you plan to keep your car a long time, this shouldn’t be a big issue. “For those who don’t have to have the latest and greatest model, this is an easy way to save,” says Moody. “However, don’t expect to get both the latest model and the best deal. It’s likely you’ll have to make some concessions if you want the best possible price. For more tips and strategies, visit Autotrader.com/ NewCarBuying. Learning a few tricks of the trade about timing your new car purchase may help you save considerably.

Flavorful Recipes to Upgrade Your Holiday Feast This holiday season, hospitality industry veterans, such as Andy Seymour—a top bar educator—are encouraging hosts to use Port wine as the focal point of their festivities in both food and drink menus. “Port’s depth of flavor and versatility in style brings so much to the palate. You will find endless ways to use it throughout your menu,” says Seymour. Favorites, such as Taylor Fladgate 20 Year Old Tawny Porto, make for a perfect digestif. And more recently port has become an ingredient which at-home mixologists as well as bartenders around the country are using in new and delicious ways. “It’s an exquisite traditional after-dinner sipper, and it can be used in an endless number of cocktails,” continues Seymour. Start the evening off with a light and easy-to-make crowd pleaser like the Fonseca Siroco White Port & Tonic, which consists of one part white port and one part tonic, served over ice and topped with a lemon twist or mint leaf. This simple cocktail will whet guests’ palates, and also pairs perfectly with a festive dish—traditionally served in the Douro region of Portugal, port’s ancestral home—called “Bolinhos de Bacalhau.” Ingredients: • 2 lbs. of dried salt cod • 4 medium potatoes (Maris Piper) • 1 large Spanish onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 handful fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped • 2 large eggs • Freshly ground salt and pepper • Vegetable oil, for frying Prep: • Soak the dried cod in cold water for 24 to 48 hours, changing the water several times to remove the majority of the salt. Drain the cod, rinse, and put it in a large pan. Simmer gently over medium-low heat for 20 to 25 minutes, until the cod is tender and flakes beautifully. Drain and rinse well, then flake the cod into a bowl with your hands, removing any bones and skin. • Peel the potatoes, bring to boil until soft and mash. • Add the cod to the potatoes, along with the onion, garlic, parsley and eggs. Beat the mixture firmly so that it is well combined. Season with salt and pepper. • Take the mixture and form either balls or quenelles. Place them in the refrigerator for a couple hours before frying. • Heat oil, fry the balls, turning until brown. In addition to White Port, several other varieties mix nicely in cocktails, including Fonseca Bin 27 Reserve Ruby Port and Croft Reserve Tawny Port. Another easy-to-make recipe is: Silent Night 1 oz. Croft Reserve Tawny 1 1/4 oz. Rye Whiskey 1/2 oz. Aperol Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Stir thoroughly and strain over a big ice cube. Garnish with a wide lemon peel. When entertaining, it’s helpful to pick a theme and build your menu around it. Port wines in all their versatility, can inspire any party host to wow guests—from the cocktail hour to the dessert course.
