VALLEY HEALTH DANVILLE, PA – October 1, 2015 marked the opening of a new recreation asset that celebrates the region’s past and will provide recreation and economic opportunities well into the future. During a ribbon cutting ceremony in Mahoning Township, Montour County, attended by local dignitaries, residents, and others, the first 0.4 miles of what will eventually be a 12 mile trail linking Danville and Bloomsburg was opened. The North Branch Canal Trail capitalizes on one of the Middle Susquehanna region’s most historic and beautiful assets: the North Branch Canal. The trail project constructs a pedestrian and bicycle link that connects residents and visitors to the culture, nature and beauty of the Susquehanna River and the canals that served as a vital lifeblood of the region during a previous era. More than a simple place to walk and bike, the trail links communities, increases recreational options, and provides economic and environmental benefits. Specifically, the North Branch Canal Trail proj-

ect aims to develop a family-oriented pedestrian and bicycle trail between Danville and Bloomsburg along the route of the historic North Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal. The trail corridor extends 12 miles between Danville and Bloomsburg via Catawissa along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River. Additional segments of the trail will open in the spring of 2016 and more segments are planned as resources become available to complete the construction of footbridges, clear the trails, and install wayfinding signs. “The great potential of the North Branch Canal Trail project has been recognized for many years, but it has taken more than a decade of concerted effort by the Montour Area Recreation Commission (MARC), the ColumbiaMontour Visitors Bureau, Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority, PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Commissions of Montour and Columbia Counties and many other partners to make this trail

a reality,” said Bob Stoudt, director of MARC. “We are thrilled to open the first portion of the trail to the public and we look forward to opening additional sections in coming months and years.” Community benefits of this trail will extend into many realms beyond simple recreation. The trail building will help stabilize, preserve and restore historically significant canal structures that will allow current and future generations to learn about and physically connect to the region’s past. It will also serve as a catalyst for nearby trail-related economic development and promote healthy outdoor fitness. The Montour Area Recreation Commission’s work to complete the North Branch Canal Trail will continue for many years. Volunteers are needed for trail construction and maintenance. Additionally, many sponsorship opportunities exist for those interested in financially supporting the trail. To learn more, please visit www. MontourRec.com/northbranch-canal-trail/

Food poisoning, an illness caused by bacteria or other pathogens in food, causes an estimated 48 million illnesses (representing one out of six Americans), 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths annually in the U.S., according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. With proper food safety practices you can lower your risk substantially, say experts. “Whether whipping up dinner from scratch or simply reheating leftovers, there are important food safety practices you must remember,” says registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson Joan Salge Blake. Wash: Harmful bacteria can survive in many places around your kitchen and be spread to food and family, without correct precautions. Wash hands for at least 20 seconds in warm, soapy water. Scrub the backs of your hands, between fingers and under your nails. Proper hand washing may eliminate nearly half of all cases of food poisoning and significantly reduce the spread of the common cold and flu. Use hot, soapy water to wash surfaces and utensils after each use, including

appliances, countertops and cutting boards. Don’t forget dishcloths and towels. Wash them frequently on the hot cycle of your washing machine. Disinfect sponges in a chlorine bleach solution and replace worn sponges frequently. Separate:Cross-contamination occurs when juices or bacteria from raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs

touch cooked or ready-toeat foods. Keep these items separate from other foods in your shopping cart, grocery bags and refrigerator. Place them in plastic bags to prevent juices from leaking, and on the refrigerator’s bottom shelf, so their juices don’t drip on other foods. As you cook, keep raw meats, poultry, seafood and eggs separate from readyto-eat foods by using different cutting boards, plates and utensils. Cook: “Many people think

they can tell when food is done simply by checking its color and texture, but one out of every four hamburgers turn brown before reaching a safe temperature,” says Salge Blake. A food thermometer is the only reliable way to ensure food has been cooked to a high enough internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria. Internal cooking temperatures vary from food to food. Refrigerate: Cooling foods promptly and properly slows the growth of harmful bacteria and helps prevent food poisoning. Refrigerate perishable foods within two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a refrigerator thermometer to ensure the refrigerator is set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below and the freezer at zero degrees Fahreinheit or below. Tasting just a tiny bit of contaminated food can cause serious illness, so toss all expired foods. If you’re unsure, remember: when it doubt, throw it out. Food poisoning is a serious concern that can often be avoided. Check out free resources, including the Is My Food Safe? app and the information available at HomeFoodSafety.org.
