5 Ways to Give a Room a Makeover

Does a room in your home need an update? There are a range of projects from large to small that can help you transform any space for maximum utility and better design. Here are five great ideas. • Update flooring. When updating your home flooring, consider some hot new trends – like turning to salvaged vintage lumber. More homeowners are including this in their remodel plans because it looks great, gives your home a mark of distinction, and is eco-friendly. Another on-trend, low-maintenance option is cement. This versatile material can be painted or stained to give your room any look you want. Keep it simple or use stencils to give your floor an impressive design. • Make something old new again. Turn an antique piece of furniture into something new. Paint chair legs a bright color, decoupage a tabletop, or reupholster a loveseat in a favorite fabric. Don’t have an existing piece of furniture? Hit up local yard sales or antique shops in search of the perfect find. For inspiration, visit pinterest.com. • Modernize a fireplace. An older wood fireplace can be dirty, drafty, high maintenance – and spendy, wasting up to $200 in energy costs annually. Consider updating your hearth with a gas fireplace insert for an upgrade that can give you a return on your investment and beautify your space. Those

from Heat & Glo use technology that make it possible to safely install a gas fireplace in any room of the home, and their styles range from traditional to ultramodern. To learn more, visit heatnglo.com. • Create a statement wall. Sometimes less really is more, particularly when it comes to walls. Consider painting or papering just one wall of your room in a bold, bright color or design. This same wall may also serve as a gallery to feature smaller artwork, photographs, clocks and other keepsakes. Before you get out the hammer and nails, plan your layout to achieve an appealing balance of colors, size and spacing. • Overhaul lighting. It’s time to say goodbye to boring, utilitarian lighting and say hello to new fixtures that strike the right tone and create ambiance. This is one of the easiest updates that can create a big impact – whether you are inspired by rustic, quirky or classic designs. You may choose to replace overhead lighting with floor lamps, swap outdated fixtures for on-trend options like chandeliers or lantern-style pendants,

or add task lighting in key areas; just be sure efficient bulbs. to test out your arrangement to ensure it’s Whatever the scope of your project ensufficiently functional. And while you’re mak- tails, you can give the rooms of your home a ing these changes, remember to use energy fresh look and eye-catching appeal.

The CPCA is a non profit club that meets monthly on the 3rd Sunday at venues throughout Central Pennsylvania.Admission is $5. For info email to cpcadance@comcast.net or phone Elsie @ 717-599-5444 This workshop is specifically designed to assist people who will be enrolling in Medicare, either because they will turn 65 years old or because they receive Social Security disability benefits. The workshop is also appropriate for spouses and caregivers. Roughly 100,000 Pennsylvanians enroll in Medicare each year. Many struggle to make the right decisions about their coverage because they do not have clear information. The Medicare enrollment process is complex and there are key decisions that must be made according to strict deadlines. There are also programs available that can help Medicare enrollees save money. Beneficiaries are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to get information from highly trained people who will offer unbiased advice. To register, please call 570-495-2384.

The Northumberland County Agency on Aging is a local affiliate of APPRISE, a program of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, the designated State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) in Pennsylvania. SHIPs receive grant funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to provide direct, local assistance to Medicare beneficiaries through one-on-one, counseling sessions (both in-person and over the phone), presentations, and public education programs. APPRISE is a free health insurance counseling program designed to help Pennsylvanians with Medicare. For more information, visit Northumberland County Agency on Aging website at www.ncaging.org. Every patient in our area miss potentially lifesaving cancer treatment because they are too ill to drive themselves and are unable to find a ride. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery® program provides free transportation to and from cancer treatment. The program needs volunteers to coordinate rides, as well as volunteer drivers. Volunteers will meet at Earl’s Bicycle Store on Fairground Road (please park in the adjacent market lot) and fan out along the trail. Some will be working with the maintenance crew on brush clearing at key intersections and others will be picking up trash. It is helpful but not required for volunteers to arrive with transporta-

tion. It is even possible to ride to cleanup areas by bike, especially since participants will not have to transport the collected trash, other than bringing it to a road crossing for the crew to collect. Community members of all ages (children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult) are invited to volunteer their time to maintaining this great community asset. Participants will be provided with snacks, equipment and directions when they arrive at Earl’s. Everyone should dress for the weather and the activity. Some of the best opportunities for outdoor exploration can only take place during the coldest months of the year; it just requires special preparation. Head-to-Toe Coverage For maximum safety and comfort, it’s important to keep your head, fingers and toes dry and toasty. A good pair of waterproof hiking boots will help keep you warm on the trail. Be sure they are designed for the type of weather and terrain you expect to encounter. Wear a wind-proof hat and good pair of gloves that have a grip. Powered by Android Wear 2.0, it can be used with a range of apps to enhance your outdoor experience, and its design offers enhanced operability and toughness, making it an especially useful piece of outdoor gear. Don’t Get Fooled In hot weather, there’s almost never any question about whether you are thirsty during or following physical activity. It can be harder to gauge in cold weather. Remember, when you’re active, it’s always important to stay hydrated. Be sure your wattle bottle is built to withstand cold weather, and if you’re worried about it freezing, don’t fill the bottle to the top. Communicate With any excursion, it’s always good prac-

When it comes to helping children with cancer, amazing new things are possible -- as long as there is funding. And it’s not just doctors and researchers who can make a difference, it can be anyone volunteering at their local hospital, planning fundraisers, or simply just spreading the word – all paving the way for a brighter future for children with cancer. Luckily, efforts are being made to help by both private businesses and individuals across the country. For example, Aflac has raised and contributed more than $118 million to the cause and is making strides to help increase awareness to encourage others to get involved. Aflac herein means American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus or New York. Since 2013, the company has donated $2 to The Aflac Foundation for every use of the hashtag #Duckprints across social media, up to $1.5 million per year. To learn more about how you can help, visit aflacchildhoodcancer. org. With more support and increased funding, more children can get the care they need.
