Holiday Treats Without the Hassle

VALLEY HO E IMPROVEMENT

It’s never too early to learn new holiday recipes to make the entertaining season easier. With only a few ingredients, you can quickly create drinks, dips and desserts, leaving you more time to socialize with family and friends at your next soiree. Holiday Cheer(s) Greeting company with a beverage at the door is a sure sign of great hosting. Easily create batches of signature drinks in a high-powered blender for everyone to enjoy. Memorable holiday parties start with a toast before dinner, so why not surprise guests with a sparkling champagne smoothie? Blend your favorite fruit and yogurt flavors with chilled champagne for a fun twist on a special occasion drink. Use a blender that is powerful and versatile enough for group entertaining, such

as the Vitamix Professional Series 500. Its 64-ounce container is ideal for mixing large batches. The blender also has pre-programmed settings for smoothies, hot soups and frozen desserts, so you can press a button, finish your party prepping and have your sparkling champagne smoothies ready in no time. As the evening winds down, offer a spin on the typical cup of coffee and serve pumpkin lattes. Blend canned pumpkin, white chocolate chips and spices with freshly brewed coffee. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg for the perfect holiday touch. Deck the Table with Dips Whether you want to serve a few light snacks instead of an entire meal or ramp up to a main course, dips are an easy way to keep guests full and happy. They

require little prep work and can be stored in the fridge while you’re waiting for friends and family to arrive. Change up an everyday cheese and crackers or veggie platter by making a traditional cheese fondue as a centerpiece. Blend Gruyere and Emmental cheese with dry white wine and seasoning to create a scrumptious appetizer. Need dipping ideas? Try cubed country French bread or grilled asparagus spears, broccoli and cauliflower. For a spicy twist, make a chipotle cheese fondue. Just add chipotle chilies and cilantro, and pair with tortilla chips. Create a salty and sweet variety by adding a chocolate hazelnut spread to the appetizer table -blend raw hazelnuts, cocoa powder and vanilla extract. Delectable Desserts The holidays can be a

low-stress dessert season, as you can make large batches of cookies ahead of time. Amp up almond cookies or snickerdoodles with a vegan cinnamon glaze by blending tofu, soy milk and cinnamon in a high performance blender, such as Vitamix. If you want to try something new and give guests options, combine two favorite holi-

day treats into one with an eggnog cheesecake. Whip up a smooth and creamy cheesecake batter in your blender in minutes. ‘Tis the season to have the best of both worlds in the kitchen and around the table. Keep your guests -and yourself -- happy with simple recipes, and leave time to enjoy the next holiday get-together.

With all this activity, it’s bound to get a It’s no secret that many homeowners keep pantry doors little disorganized. Simple solutions can combat common and donate any non-perishables you aren’t going to use. kitchen cleaning conundrums. Next, wipe down pantry shelves to remove dust and crumbs from hard-to-reach corners. Before restocking shelves, lay down a nonadhesive shelf liner to protect newly cleaned shelves. Easy Liner brand shelf liner by Duck brand is a good choice, especially the new Solid and Super Grip shelf liner products which feature Clorox antimicrobial protection of the liner to help prevent the growth of odorcausing mold and mildew. They are also machinewashable, so when a big spill does come along, you can just toss the liner in the wash. Soon, you’ll have a clean pantry you’ll want to show off. Refrigerator Leaks Between fresh produce, dairy, meat and leftovers,

there’s a lot going on inside a fridge. Make it a habit every few months to wash the inside of your refrigerator, even the shelves and drawers (a location where many stubborn spills tend to be forgotten). A natural cleaning solution, like Green Works All-Purpose Cleaner is best for this area in the kitchen. It’s safe to use on a variety of surfaces throughout the kitchen and it’s 98 percent naturally derived, so you can be confident that it won’t leave behind harsh chemical fumes or residue. Dirty, Smelly Sponges Sponges are a kitchen staple, and also the germiest item in the entire kitchen, according to NSF research. And after only a few uses, they can develop a foul-smelling odor. Luckily, there’s a quick fix for getting a sponge back in proper cleaning condition. Simply wet the sponge and pop it in the microwave for two minutes to eliminate germs. Ta-da! It’s ready to use. Grimy Cabinets and Streaky Surfaces From greasy little hands going in for snacks to frequent opening and closing during meal-prep, grease and grime on kitchen cabinets and door handles can accumulate quickly -- spreading germs and making your kitchen look dirty! To disinfect and deodorize cabinets and other non-porous surfaces, a good bet is Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. First, remove any excess debris and then use enough wipes for the surface to remain visibly wet for four minutes. For food-contact surfaces, rinse with clean water. To clean hard, nonporous kitchen cabinet exteriors, wipe the cabinet on the outside and let it dry. Making it a practice to wipe down cabinets weekly will prevent a lot of grease and buildup in the long run.

Safe Ways to Relieve Dry Eyes Dry eye syndrome -when your body doesn’t produce enough tears to keep your eyes moist -- is not just uncomfortable, it can lead to eye damage. Unfortunately, the problem is common and can worsen with age. In fact, Americans spend about a third of a billion dollars annually on over-the-counter eye drops, or “artificial tears,” a solution which is only temporary. And their prescription counterparts may produce such side effects as allergic reactions, acute and chronic conjunctivitis, stinging and blurred vision, among others. Indeed, the preservatives in eye drops themselves can even be a source of dry eye

syndrome. So before reaching for those drops, consider these alternatives: Change Your Lifestyle Reducing your alcohol intake can have many positive benefits on the body and you can count relief from dry eye syndrome among them. Additionally, avoid exposure to cigarette smoke and other air pollutants. If you’re a smoker, relieving dry eye syndrome may be great motivation to quit. Screen time can also worsen dry eye syndrome. Unfortunately, this is one thing that’s hard to avoid. Screens may be an integral part of your work day, and you likely carry a smartphone or tablet with you when you are on-the-go. However, you can take frequent breaks from staring at your screens. Be sure

to schedule time periodically where you actively look away from your screen -- a perfect time to take care of the whole body and stand up and stretch. Consider Supplements Recent discoveries show that protective plant compounds from the South American maqui berry can reduce light-induced damage to tear glands and enhance tear production. Consider taking maqui berry extract, which can represent an effective approach to restore comfort and composition of one’s tears. “If you’re accustomed to thinking of eye drops as the sole solution, it can be difficult to imagine an oral treatment having such a profound impact on tear production. However, protective plant compounds can actually restore your eye’s delicate ecosystem from the inside out,” says Michael A. Smith, MD, senior health scientist for Life Extension and host of Healthy Talk on

RadioMD.com. Along with a maqui supplement, consider upping your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which boost production of the oily layer of your eyes, improving the integrity of the tear film and slowing the evaporation of tears. In addition to flaxseeds, walnuts, salmon and other foods that are chock full of the nutrient, consider omega-3 fatty acid supplements. For more information, visit www.lifeextension.com/Tear or call 866-280-2851. Embrace Your Four Eyes Dry eye syndrome can be exacerbated by contacts. It can also be caused by LASIK surgery to correct one’s vision. You can reduce symptoms by sticking with your glasses. If you can’t say no to contacts, consider finding a pair of glasses you truly love and taking a break with them a few times a week. Don’t live with dry eye discomfort. Consider new ways to relieve your symptoms.

Pennyslvania Redware Exhibit Packwood House Museum is pleased to announce its holiday exhibit, “Pennsylvania Redware at Packwood House,” will open on Saturday, November 21, 2015. Featured in the Tour Center’s Kelly Gallery, the exhibit will examine the varieties of forms and decorations used by potters in Central Pennsylvania during the late 18th through the early 20th centuries. Items on display will include common utilitarian pieces such as pitchers, cups, bowls, plates, crocks, jars, and jugs. The term “redware” applies to simple, leadglazed earthenware pottery produced in the United States from roughly after 1625 to the present. It was the first pottery made by European colonists after settling in North America using the native clay that is abundant along stream and riverbeds along the East Coast. Although readily available, redware was extremely porous and had to be coated with a lead-based glaze in order to hold liquids.

Despite this problem, redware continued to be widely used until more durable stoneware and ironstone ceramics became popular around 1850. In parts of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia, redware is still made today using non-toxic glazes that are safe for cooking and eating. “Pennsylvania Redware at Packwood House” will run through Saturday, January 9, 2016, and will be available for viewing during the Museum’s open hours of Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An admission of $5 will be charged. The Museum’s Tour Center is located at 15 North Water Street, Lewisburg. For information on touring the Museum, or to schedule an appointment, please call 570-524-0323 or visit www.packwoodhousemuseum. com.

in Womelsdorf, Otto will discuss Weiser’s ties with Shikellamy, Sassoonan and other Native Americans who made many trips between the native town of Shamokin (presentday Sunbury) and Weiser’s base at Womelsdorf. Sunbury November 19-21: 2 Apple Pie Baking Workshop at Owens Farm Spend an afternoon on the farm baking an oldfashioned apple pie featuring a flaky crust made with butter and lard. Be the dessert hero at Thanksgiving and Christmas! $25 fee includes materials and guidance for one pie. You will bring home a freshly baked pie with a slice missing (of course we are going to sample them—with ice cream—the minute we take them out of the oven). You can make two pies at once for an additional $10 to cover supplies. This works well if you and a child want to make 2 pies together. While the pies are baking, we’ll bring the apple cores and peelings out to the pigs whose relatives provided us with lard. Coffee, tea, and Shade Mountain wine will be available to warm things up. Class times are Thursday, 3:00-5:30 or Saturday, 1:003:30. Register online at www.OwensFarm.

How to Conduct a DIY Home Energy Audit

NOVEMBER 30TH

TVT

This fall, why not consider making needed improvements in your home to help increase energy efficiency and save big in the long run? Here is a short checklist for a DIY home energy audit. Seal Air Leaks According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing air leaks around the house can save up to 30 percent of energy costs annually. To find leaks, conduct a thorough visual inspection for gaps and cracks by baseboards, where the walls and ceiling meet, around door frames, and near cable and phone line wall plates. Spot a gap? Caulk it. Use painter’s tape for a cleaner job. Hold the caulking gun at an angle for best results, and apply in a continuous stream. Improve insulation around windows and doors with weather-stripping. Measure the gap you need to fill to identify the width of weather-stripping needed and determine whether you should apply it from the inside or outside. Before starting, read the package instructions to ensure you’re using the right mate-

rials. Cut to size and install. Lastly, check if your fireplace flue is open. If so, close it when not in use for additional savings. Make Smart Upgrades One quick way to check your windows for inefficiencies is to look for condensation, frost and other moisture. The Department of Energy also recommends closing your windows on a dollar bill. If you can easily pull the bill out, the window might be losing substantial energy and may require repair or replacement. Additionally, ENERGY STAR reports that homeowners who choose windows that have earned the ENERGY STAR save an average $101-$538 a year when replacing singlepane windows. If it’s time for an upgrade, look for ENERGY STAR qualified windows that offer innovative technologies and improve energy efficiency. Exterior remodeling companies like Window World, an ENERGY STAR partner, offer more highperformance options featuring technologies like a Warm-Edge Spacer System, which blocks escaping heat between glass layers. Additionally, the company

sells windows made with high-performance Low Emissivity Glass, featuring a microscopic silver coating that actively blocks heat gain during the summer and heat loss during the winter. To further improve efficiency, Window World’s replacement windows also contain Argon gas between their glass layers. Because Argon is denser than air, it acts as an ideal insulator. For information about innovative and cost-saving energy efficiency options, visit www.WindowWorld. com. Change Behavior Do an audit of not only your home’s features, but of the occupants as well. Are lights left on in empty rooms? Is the television on when no one is watching it? From switching to cold water laundry cycles to taking advantage of sunlight for warmth and light -- modifications of energy and cost-saving resources don’t need to be a sacrifice. To save energy, improve the comfort of your home and do your part to be more environmentally conscientious, conduct a do-it-yourself energy audit. You’ll likely discover many areas in your home that should be improved.
