KNOW THE SIGNS Symptoms occur within 2 to 21 days after one is exposed to the virus and, as has been widely reported, a person is not contagious until symptoms arise. Early symptoms include: fever, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, muscle pain and unexplained bleeding or bruising. 2. THERE IS NO OUTBREAK INTHE UNITED STATES While the epidemic in West Africa is the largest in history, there have been two cases imported from Africa as well as two contracted cases, both of who were health care workers treating an imported case. 3. EBOLA ISN’T AIRBORNE Contracting the virus requires a person to come into direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, including blood, vomit, sweat, feces, saliva, breast milk and semen. It also can be passed from used needles or syringes used by an infected person. As a general rule, never touch someone else’s needle. Infected primates and fruit bats also can pass Ebola to humans, so avoid direct contact with both, which should be relatively easy to accomplish.
4. YOUR RISK OF CONTRACTING EBOLA IN THE U.S. IS ALMOST NONEXISTENT Sure, things could change down the road, but as it stands now the average person has almost no chance of contracting Ebola. If you or someone you know is traveling to impacted regions in Africa, make sure to take all proper precautions both during the trip and upon your return. 5. ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT CONTRACTING EBOLA For those traveling to Ebolaimpacted regions, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the following: • Practice careful hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and avoid contact with blood and body fluids. • Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or body fluids, such as clothes, bedding, needles and medical equipment. • Avoid funeral or burial rituals that require handling the body of someone who has died from Ebola. • Avoid contact with bats and nonhuman primates or blood, fluids, and raw meat prepared from these animals.
• Avoid hospitals in West Africa where Ebola patients are being treated. The U.S. embassy or consulate is often able to provide advice on facilities. After you return, monitor your health for 21 days and seek medical care immediately if you develop symptoms of Ebola.
6. EBOLA HAS NO VACCINE While there are experimental vaccines and treatments currently in testing, there is no effective cure. Early detection is key since the effectiveness of treatment depends on the health of the patient and how well a person’s immune system responds. When symptoms are caught early, treatment with IV fluids and electrolytes, as well as keeping oxygen and blood pressure levels stable and treating other infections that result from the virus improve chances of survival. 7.
