The weather was generally unpleasant, the courses usually muddy, but the benefits of participating were remarkable. Riders would complete multiple laps, and the winner was the one who completed the most laps in the allotted time, which was usually 30-60 minutes, plus one lap. ractically everyone has heard of meditation, but what is it really? When asked, everyone seems to have a different idea as to how it’s done, or the benefits one would get from it. Some say it gives you better clarity and the ability to focus, while others offer up more New Age, philosophical reasons. In reality, meditation itself actually has two sides. On one side, there is the practice of meditation. But, what’s being “practiced”? It’s this question that points to the core reason for meditation - the reason behind it’s original development. Meditation, in the original sense, is a state of mind. Therefor, the practice of meditation is a way to “practice” holding the mind in a particular state, and training it to function better when we’re in that state. Like any other tool, the mind is capable of doing amazing things. And, like the grinding tool that sharpens the blade, meditation practice is the tool used to sharpen your mind; itself a tool for more powerful, awake, purposeful and successful living. While many practitioners prefer to meditate alone, others find it useful to have a guide - someone who can lead them through a particular type of practice and specific results. This form of meditation, known as a guided meditation, can help you to stay ontrack, focused, and to help you make sure that you’re practicing correctly, not getting off-track or deluding yourself.. Probably the most commonly understood benefit of meditation is for calming and quieting the mind - getting rid of the mental chatter and “noise” that can distract us, or keep us chained to negative events from our pasts. ourselves,” can increase stress, and make it difficult to focus in order to move forward and get things done. Another form of practice focuses on our ability to observe, follow, and assess. It targets those mental functions important for reading a story or following along with the plot of a movie we’re watching. This form of meditation can be used to uncover the reasons behind why we do what we do, and to help us to get rid of bad habits, beliefs and tendencies, while increasing the positive already within ourselves. There are many other types of guided meditation, including visualization and those which direct our awareness outward for

better connection and awareness of our sensory input from the world around us. But, it’s not so much the form or type which matters, as the answer to the question: “Which one is right for you?” What do you have the most trouble with when it comes to focusing your mind? Then, when you’re looking for a meditation teacher, you’ll know what to look for and what questions to ask. Don’t worry though; even if you don’t know where to begin, a good teacher will know how to help you, so he can then help you move forward in your quest to live life with greater clarity, focus, vision, and purpose.

ational Memory Screening Day was held on Wednesday, November 20. Doctor’s offices, hospitals and facilities across our area held screening to promote early detection and intervention for those concerned about memory loss as well as to educate the public about successful aging. If you missed these screening and are concerned about yourself or a loved ones memory please see your family physician. The following article is designed to give you information regarding the signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It is by no means to be used as a diagnostic tool. Dementia is a term used by many in the health care field to identify those individuals that have a progressive loss of thinking, common judgment and

the ability to focus and learn. The term dementia is an umbrella term used to define the above however more that half of dementia cases are commonly caused by a life altering disease called Alzheimer’s. No one can pinpoint the exact cause of this disease however it is thought the genetic factors and death of brain cells may be to blames. We all have done it. Forgot an appointment, a friend’s name, misplaced our keys. How do you know when ev-

eryday forgetfulness slides into a diagnosis of dementia. Some symptoms maybe as follows: Forgetting familiar tasks that once performed with eatse or being easily distracted while performing such tasks. Forgetting simple words or substituting inappropriate words. Becoming lost or disorientated in a familiar place. Poor judgment, poor hygiene habits or inappropriately dressed for the weather. Mood and behavior changes. Changes in personality, becoming sus-

picious and fearful of things. Becoming disengaged in the world and things that someone once loved. Some of these signs are typical signs of aging however if concerned about yourself or a loved one please keep an account of any signs that are not typical of the person involved and seek out professional advise. While dementia is a scary diagnosis, the medical field continues to make strides to help those individuals and families cope.
