Everyone seems to be looking for ways to save more money, especially as the cost of living is on the rise. By trimming expenses on the things you need, you can devote more toward the things you want, as well as save more for the future. Home Maintenance If you’re paying a professional to perform simple home maintenance tasks and keep up the lawn, consider doing it yourself. From pest prevention to raking and watering the lawn, many such duties are simple to perform with inexpensive tools and a free afternoon. By frequently changing your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) filters, you may be able to lower your electric bills by improving your unit’s performance, as well as help keep it free from pollution and debris. A dirty filter may cause your unit to work harder to heat your home in the winter and cool it in the summer. A new filter can cost as little as a dollar, whereas a new HVAC unit will come

with a heftier price tag. Also, consider swapping your traditional incandescent bulbs for LED light bulbs, which typically use 85 percent less energy, saving you potentially over $130 in energy costs over the life of the bulb. Healthy Habits Healthy habits can save you money down the line, from lost work time to doctor visit copays. Start with a well-balanced diet, daily exercise and a good night’s rest. In the cooler months consider soups and hot tea. Also, make sure your home is well-equipped to keep the whole family feeling their best. Stock up on vitamins, minerals, hand soap and disinfected wipes and sprays to help prevent a cold or flu. Preventive medicines can also fend off any pending illness during allergy seasons. Disinfecting wipes make it easy to clean commonlytouched household items, such as door knobs, telephones, refrigerator door handles and TV remotes.

Use disinfectant sprays to protect your family from germs and freshen up your home. Digital Coupons Coupons can save money every day, but they can be time consuming to clip. They are also often forgotten at home. However, digital coupon programs can help you avoid these hassles. For example, by signing up for Dollar General’s new Digital Coupon Program online or at check-out, you can load relevant coupons to your profile for everything from groceries and cleaning supplies to seasonal items. Digital coupons are then automatically applied when eligible items are purchased. With a bit of planning, maintenance and savvy consumerism, you can save more on the items you purchase frequently.

Keep Pets

Happy Healthy

this Holiday Season

The holiday season can mean new routines, new décor and new foods in your home. While these temporary changes can be exciting for people, they can be hazardous to pets. “The extended holiday season is no excuse to take a vacation from being a great pet parent,” says Dr. Jeff Werber, Hollywood’s Vet to the Stars. Keeping your dog happy and healthy this holiday season is easy, Werber says. He is sharing some seasonal tips.

• Keep curious pets focused: Most pets will be curious about the tinsel, ornaments and ribbons of the season. Since most decorations are not petfriendly, keep them beyond reach and take necessary precautions and keep your pets focused on something they truly enjoy. If your dog begs at the table every night, chances are they’ll be begging at the holiday dinner table. With new people over and different kinds of food falling to the floor, it’ll be

important to prevent distractions during dinner. Use healthy treats, such as Greenies, as a training tool to keep your dog away from guests’ dinner plates. • Give recognizable gifts: A whopping 85 percent of pet parents buy their dog a holiday present, according to the 2014 Greenies: Dog Owners Survey. In order for your pet to be as thrilled about their stocking as you are, give them the same treat before the holiday -- so

that it’s more familiar and better received. This year, consider giving a gift that promotes good health. While nearly half of all dog owners have turned away from a kiss from a dog because of its bad breath, more than a quarter say they don’t brush their dog’s teeth at all. And bad breath isn’t just unpleasant; it can be a sign of poor dental health or dental disease. Consider giving your dog a dental chew that carries the Vet-

erinary Oral Health Council Seal of Acceptance for control of plaque and tartar, such as Greenies Canine Dental Chews. They are the number one veterinarian-recommended dental chews and are available in special Season’s Greenies holiday packaging around this time of year. • Give your pet extra love: During the holidays your routine will likely change. Your dog will be able to tell, but not know why. As you are out

shopping or attending a holiday party, your pet might be missing out on his usual attention. Show your pet some love by setting some time aside for daily play time or an extra walk. Or give them their favorite treat. More pet health tips and resources can be found at www.Greenies. com. The holidays are all about sharing time with friends and family. In the shuffle, don’t forget your beloved pet!

VALLEY GIFT GUIDE Festive holiday parties are a winter staple. But how do you put a twist on the annual tradition? To add new flavor and excitement to your holiday gathering this year, consider incorporating a series of sweet surprises to delight your guests. The Perfect Pairing You’re probably familiar with the concept of pairing appetizers and entrées with the perfect wines, but you may not realize that it’s just as important for your sweet treats! If you’re serving a particularly sweet candy such as peanut brittle, pair it with a stout beer for the perfect complement. And if you’ve chosen a rich, indulgent chocolate for your guests, consider pairing with an equally bold Cabernet Sauvignon so the wine can stand up to the flavor of the chocolate. The Sweetest Buffet To show your guests you care, create a candy buffet and invite them to pick a selection of their favorite sweets. Not ev-

eryone has the same preferences, so be sure to offer a variety of treats including a selection of truffles, nuts and chews, and for the little ones, gourmet lollypops are always a hit! Always serve sweet treats made with highquality ingredients. See’s Candies is one of the few remaining candy makers that ages its chocolate -- a process that takes

longer, but imparts a each of your guests. You tions in major malls nation- twists, your guests are smooth, mellow flavor. can find See’s Candies wide or at www.Sees.com. sure to have only “sweet” See’s candies have no at holiday gift center locaWith these simple things to say! added preservatives and are also gluten free. The Next Frontier Experts Predict the Future of Travel

As you book your next vacation, it doesn’t hurt to think ahead -- way ahead. Technology is changing everything about the way we live, work and play, and travel is no exception. Indeed, Earth’s orbit and the depths of the oceans will become vacation destinations over the next decade, according to predictions laid out in the third part of “Future of Travel 2024,” a report conducted by Skyscanner, a leading global travel search engine.

“Future travelers will be able to take advantage of truly tailored adventures in space and beyond due to technological innovations on the horizon,” says Filip Filipov, Head of B2B, Skyscanner. Intrigued? Here are three areas of travel where you can expect to see dramatic changes in the not so distant future, according to the report. Space and Sea For travelers, space tourism is an emerging frontier. Travelers will be able to enter

Earth’s low orbit to experience the stunning curvature of the globe from an ultra-high altitude. Looking beyond 2024, space travelers may soon be able to enjoy the view suspended in sky resorts containing zero-gravity spas, space gliders and space observatories where guests can even experience weightlessness. “Even more exciting than being able to jet off into outer space will be the possibility of flying in low orbital space planes that will radically cut

inter-continental flight times, even eliminating jetlag in the process,” says Filipov. Journeys to the bottom of the sea are predicted to be a much more mainstream, affordable and fashionable alternative to space travel. While underwater hotel rooms already exist as novelty destinations, a new wave of innovators are scaling up the concept, aiming to build entire resorts under the waves -- including spas, gardens and pools, all with aquarium

style-windows allowing guests to go outside in diving gear. Hyper-personalized Hotels Forget the television, hotel room walls will one day be fully interactive, capable of playing films, showing pictures, displaying video calls from loved ones and even providing frosting for private work spaces within the room. “As a response to advances in technology and peer-to-peer travel, hotels will empower guests with incredible

VALLEY GIFT GUIDE perennial travel motivator. In 2024, travelers seeking unique journeys that will make them the envy of friends and family will have no shortage of choices. The emergence of “forbidden zones,” areas currently deemed inaccessible by conflict, will become attractive new destinations for discovery. Off-the-beaten track destinations like Bhutan are already seeing an increase in interest -- as Skyscan-

ner searches of this destination are up 40 percent since 2013. Tourists are also predicted to travel to destinations where they can view endangered species and habitats before they’re gone. The full report can be found at www.skyscanner2024.com. So for those who are tired of the same old vacation spots year after year, your travel search will soon contain once impossible destinations.

It’s the holiday party season, which means that it’s time to be in the social limelight and look your best. But with indulgent feasts, hectic schedules and cold weather leading to dry, dull skin, you’ll need to take extra steps to overcome a few beauty hurdles, no matter who you are. Here are some things to consider this season: Stay Fit Despite one’s best intentions, it’s hard to ignore the siren call of the appetizer spread and the dessert tray. Compound this with a couple rounds of egg nog and

you’re sending your calorie count for the day to new heights. Fight this seasonal battle of the bulge while getting a kick start on your New Year’s resolutions by putting in some extra time at the gym during the holiday season. When you aren’t socializing, be sure to keep meals on the lighter side. A healthful snack before hitting the party can help curb overeating. However, you may opt to avoid outfits that are excessively clingy or form-fitting, just in case you do over-indulge. Smooth Skin The cold winter air makes it harder to keep skin hydrated and smooth. You can rectify this by shaving smarter and using warm instead of hot water in the shower. Men should consider a hydrating

& Healthy Snacks

I love eating, and I do it often. Not so surprising for a nutritionist. I just choose healthy snacks! It is a balance between getting healthy snacks, maintaining weight, and loving food. But it can be done. My go to snacks are all about nutrition, pleasure, and taste. My favorite 10 Go-to Healthy Snacks: 1. Apples – I love apples just the way they are. Crunchy, tart, sweet,

and packed with fiber, magnesium, potassium, healthy polysterols, and tens of thousands of phytonutrients. 2. Homemade Granola – toast oats, nuts, and seeds; add dried fruit; dust with cinnamon – that lots of fiber, healthy fats, sweet taste, and it’s easy to take along. 3. Dark Chocolate covered Almonds – melt dark chocolate; stir in nuts; cool – just make sure you

portion this one out, because they are so good, I ate a whole pound without realizing the first time I made it! 4. Almond butter (get the hint nuts are tgood for you) – this omega-3 fatty acid powerhouse is so easy to spread on veggies and fruit (like the apples). 5. Hummus – Another dipper for veggies – good protein, high in healthy fats, and low carb! 6. Yogurt with fruit – an easy way to get billions of probiotics, that serving of fruit, and if you combine frozen fruit with really cold yogurt, it’s like eating ice cream! 7. Mini Pizza – homemade, of course – use a tiny, thin homemade crust (here’s the one I like), lots of sauce, stack on the veggies, top with cheese and spices 8. Fruit – I love just snacking of fruits – so much goodness, so little summer to grow 9. Cheese – Aged, flavorful cheese is good, when combined with something health – try apples and cheese, or shredded cheese on hummus 10. Jerky – make your own – flavorful (hopefully local, healthy) meats, seasoned heartily, and dried – makes a great accompaniment to the granola Christina K Major Holistic Nutritionist Naturopathic Doctor Crystal Holistic Health Consulting 570-975-1615 CrystalHolisticHealth.com

Lights, music, family, boughs of holly -- the holidays are known for many pleasant sights and sensations. Unfortunately, seasonal stress, odd schedules and overindulgence in rich foods can mean an upset stomach, heartburn and indigestion for some celebrants. • Seek balance: Eating a balanced diet is a key factor in preventing indigestion, constipation and other digestive problems, but accomplishing this goal may be a bit trickier during the holiday party season. Drink plenty of water, hit the veggie tray before the cheese tray, and be sure to incorporate fruit, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and lowfat dairy into your other, less festive meals. • Enjoy slowly: With so many terrific foods on the menu, why rush? Enjoy meals slowly. You’ll be more likely to practice portion control this way. Additionally, digestion will be easier if you don’t make your body process too much at once. • Reduce stress: Stress can manifest itself through the digestive system in the form of heartburn. So avoid letting the holidays become an added source of stress. Carve out a few moments daily throughout the season to relax. • Cook smart: Certain herbs are well known to aid digestion or settle an upset stomach. Counteract the effects of all those rich foods and drinks by incorporating basil, dill, mint, cilantro and ginger into holiday cooking. • Listen to your body: Symptoms are usually an expression of the body’s attempt to correct an imbalance. Try a homeopathic medicine that works with the body to alleviate discomfort. For example, Boiron makes dissolvable pellets called Nux vomica for symptomatic relief. The sweet-tasting pellets melt in your mouth without water, and won’t bother an already upset stomach. Be attentive to the body’s signals and use it at the first sign of symptoms. For a natural indigestion remedy or natural hangover remedy, try it after too much coffee, alcohol, spicy or rich food, or when feeling drowsy

after a big meal. More information can be found at www. BoironUSA.com. • Kitchen cabinet remedies: Your kitchen cabinet contains an arsenal of remedies, say experts. “Take two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar before eating to help with digestion. You can also try drinking a cup of organic herbal tea, such as chamomile, dandelion or burdock, with fresh lemon juice after meals to help with liver detox and promote relaxation,” says celebrity chef and culinary nutritionist Amie Val-

pone, HHC, AADP. • Exercise: Regular exercise benefits a healthy digestive system, so get plenty of it. Just be sure to avoid anything strenuous directly after a heavy holiday meal, which can actually put digestion on hold by redirecting blood away from your digestive tract to support the heart and muscles, according to Harvard Medical School. This holiday season, keep your body in balance with natural remedies to treat and reduce common digestive symptoms.

A Good Cleaning Helps Rid Seasonal Allergens

Many people think of allergies as a spring problem, but most sniffle sufferers know that fall can pose its own issues. Mold and ragweed are common fall allergy triggers, as well as dust mites, which are naturally more prevalent in the home during the drier months. “You can turn your home into a safe haven from fall allergens with regular, strategic cleaning and a few preventive measures,” says Robin Wilson, an interior design expert and an ambassador with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. To help make your home more comfortable this season, Wilson is offering some fall cleaning tips to eliminate allergens and maintain a clean and healthy space: • Wash your bedding. Mattress and pillow protectors will help control dust mites. As an added precaution, wash your bedding in warm or hot water every month and replace pillows every three years. • Check for mold. Moisture breeds mold, so make sure to scan the inside of dishwashers, under the fridge in the water pan and in sink and bath drains. Change

water dispensers and icemaker filters on a regular basis. • Vacuum frequently. Whether you have wallto-wall carpeting, tile or hardwood floors, it’s important to eliminate dust and dirt. Vacuum, mop or steam clean flooring regularly. “Use a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which captures small particles such as allergens, irritants and pollutants,” says Wilson. For example, the Panasonic MC-UL429 Vacuum has a HEPA filter and accessories that allow you to be more thorough and get into tight corners. This vacuum also comes with an attachment that pulls pet hair -- another potential allergen -- out of upholstered surfaces. More information can be found at www.shop.panasonic.com. • Wash or freeze stuffed toys. If your child sleeps with their favorite stuffed animals, you should frequently wash or freeze them in a plastic bag for 48 hours. This will lower the level of dust mites which can trigger asthma and allergies. • Use Slipcovers. Slipcovers have come a long way in the last 10 years. Since they can be

cleaned regularly and more easily than upholstery, consider using them on sofas and other furniture. • Keep ragweed outside. After spending time outside, have your

child leave any clothing or sports equipment close to the entrance of the home to avoid tracking irritants throughout rooms. “Just because the pollen count isn’t through

the roof doesn’t mean you can’t fall prey to allergies,” says Wilson. “With regular cleaning, you can manage the irritants in your home and make it a more breathable place.”

Warm Up This Winter

Heating your home can be a costly endeavor. But you don’t have to make your family suffer in shivering silence to save some money. There are plenty of steps you can take to optimize your heating efforts, as well as prep your home for several months of cool weather. • Check and maintain your insulation. Improperly insulated walls, floors, attics, basements and crawl spaces drain away heat and can encourage mold and mildew. • Add weather stripping and caulk around windows and doors to prevent drafts which waste energy and money. • Install a programmable thermostat that shuts itself off during the day when you’re away and at night when you’re asleep. This will keep you comfortable when you’re home and

save you money when you’re not. • Keep vents and returns free of obstructions. Don’t lay carpet over vents, place furniture over or in front of them or obstruct the flow of air. • Keep your air filters clean. Check them every couple of weeks and change them as directed by the manufacturer. • Let the sun shine in by opening curtains on cold days. Get heavy drapes to keep things cozy at night. • Review last year’s energy bills. If your heating costs are drastically higher this year, a qualified HVAC/R technician may be able to diagnose the problem. Schedule such inspections twice annually, even if you aren’t experiencing any detectable issues. • When choosing a contractor for installation or maintenance, important factors must be taken into con-
