will have a calendar full of seasonal things to do during the month and will usually arrange for outside groups to entertain and visit the residents. Facility staff will decorate and begin to play Christmas music to feel more home like, however it is vital and important to the residents to fell a family connection. Often, older adults will feel as though they are “in the way” or have left their family down. Spending time with them is vital to there overall health and well-being. If their health allows, ask your loved one to help with holiday preparations such as addressing Christmas cards or wrapping Christmas presents. Family members can also bring in decorations and help the residents decorate their room in holiday splendor. It is recommended that visitors ask what is permitted in the rooms for safety reasons. Emotionally, the holidays are hard on everyone, but it is important that families do not make promises that they may not be able to keep. Visiting someone whose memory is declining is difficult as well as disheartening for family and friends. An older person may respond to stimuli that triggers a memory from long ago such as a Christmas song that they grew up with or have learned as a child. Visitors may also bring in Christmas tapes or videos of Christmas pasts or even movies they have watched together. Some residents will be able to spend the holiday at home with their family. We recommend notifying the nursing staff at least twenty-four hours in advance so preparations can be made. This gives the staff time to

get the resident ready to leave the facility and pack their medications that may need to be sent along. In some instances, the resident’s doctor may have to sign off on the request to leave the facility. If the doctor is taking a vacation around the holidays, giving advance notice will circumvent paperwork delays or possibly not even getting the paperwork signed. If you are taking your loved one home for the first time facility staff will be able to answer questions such as: how much care will be required for me while they are at home? If you have steps in your home, will your loved one be able to walk up the steps or should other arrangements be made? If you are taking medications along, what times should the medications be given and with what? By talking with staff you will be made aware of routines and any difficulty the resident is having . Keep in mind what the resident may be feeling. They can be remembering how it was to be at home and may be feeling that they would like to remain at home and not go back to the facility. Happy times remembered and enjoyed now with others is the bet way to take care of emotional needs. Older adults who live in the community are encouraged to take a pro-active role in letting their families know their limitations and what role they would like to play in the holidays. During this upcoming holiday season, we encourage you to please include the older adults in your life. Recalling and sharing happy memories and making new memories are what the holiday season is all about.

person wants to join martial arts, the point is that each sees the benefits of feeling more confident, powerful, and in-control of his or her life through the practice of the martial arts. Why then, are these well-meaning individuals stuck in what Dr. Seuss called, “The Waiting Place?” Perhaps one of the reasons is that each believes they must have certain skills or abilities before they can begin, or that their situation with work schedules, a limited budget, or their physical fitness and level of health, is unique to themselves. Maybe they believe they should already possess certain life-skills like discipline, focus, and anything else besides their heart-felt desire to begin. And maybe, just maybe, they’re afraid others with more experience will make fun of them, or look down on them because they’re a beginner and don’t know very much. As a senior practitioner who has been involved in the martial arts for over twothirds of my life, I’d

like to quite possibly be the first to say that... You don’t need any skills and abilities, life or otherwise BEFORE beginning your training. You don’t need to be in any sort of “perfect shape,” or have rocksolid discipline, commitment, or focus either, because these are the things that you’ll be developing as part of your martial arts study! No. The only thing you need to match your desire to begin - is a willingness to take that first important step – to take action. And, where else, but as a “beginner” would you start? I do know this, however. If you wait for the “right time” - if you wait to be properly “motivated,” or for your schedule to “free up,” or to have more money - if you wait for the “best time” - it will probably never happen for you. And you will live out one of the fears that keep most successful people moving - the fear that, in later years, you will regret NOT following your dreams and living the life you’ve always wanted – the regret so many older

adults share with young people. Think about it. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jeffrey M. Miller is the founder and master instructor of Warrior Concepts International. Be Here, Now!

O

ne of the biggest struggles for my clients (and myself) is being present in the moment. You might think you are being mindful of your actions but if you’re daily goal is to get everything on your to-do list checked off, or if you judge your success by the amount of things you can accomplish, you may miss out on the JOURNEY! Yep, you’ve heard it.

LIFE IS ABOUT THE JOURNEY AND NOT THE DESTINATION,

but we go-getters and high-achievers tend to focus on the end result so much that we forget the importance of the lessons we learn along the way. My guided meditations this week have introduced to me a new favorite mantra- Bliss be my guide! Our purpose on earth is to be happy and useful. When I start to feel stressed out or overwhelmed, I’ve begun repeating my new mantra and what a day changer it has been. Imagine if you allowed bliss to be your guide. This thought reminds me to do what I enjoy and take time to be present and enjoy what I’m doing. Find fun in daily responsibilities. Be present. Instead of rushing through your daily tasks thinking about what’s coming up next, slow down your mind long enough to notice what you’re doing RIGHT NOW. What if all we have is the present moment? What if we spend all of our time focusing on tomorrow and tomorrow never comes (not to sound like a negative Nancy but you get my point.) Yoga teaches us to be present in the moment. We focus on our breath and allow our thoughts to drift away. It’s difficult to think about what you have to do later when you’re balancing on one leg or using your breath to help you relax into a more challenging pose. How can you be more present and allow bliss to be your guide more often? Here are some action steps that you can implement right away! “Certified health coach and personal trainer Teresa Duttinger supports women around the world in reaching their health and fitness goals while becoming confident in their bodies and learning to create balance in their life. She also teaches Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga as a Yoga Alliance certified instructor. To connect with her or sign up for her newsletter go to www.teresaduttinger.com.

ACTION STEPS:

1. Be mindful of your breath during your day. When you're at your computer, breathe deeply through your nose and notice how much calmer you feel as a result.

5. Try a yoga class and take a full hour to be mindful and present and learn breathing techniques to help you be more mindful on a regular basis. If you have so much on your plate that you're misplacing your stuff or forgetting conversations

you had with people (ok, I'm guilty too), this is a great time to think about how you can be more mindful and allow bliss to be your guide too.

$

2. Sing a happy song as you're cleaning or washing dishes or doing something you don't love. Bring more joy into the every day stuff.
