n Friday, February 7 many of us in the healthcare industry celebrated National Wear Red Day. It is observed the first Friday in February. Many of us think of heart disease as a “man’s disease” however a woman suffers a heart attack about every 90 seconds in the United States. Wear Red day is just for this reason. It is used to promote awareness for the community and women alike that heart disease is the leading killer of women in the United States. Women of all ages and backgrounds can get heart disease. It does not discriminate. National Wear Red Day began ten years ago and despite the needed increase in awareness over the last decade, only 56 percent of women recognize that heart disease is their number one killer. While many women experience no symptoms of heart disease at all, others may feel a heavy to sharp chest pain or discomfort. Pan in the neck/ jaw/throat or even pain in the back. These symptoms may occur

during a physical activity or even while relaxing. Heart disease is even referred to as a “silent” killer and may often go undiagnosed until a women has a symptom of a heart attack, heart failure, an abnormal heart beat or even a stroke. Diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol and heredity are all risk factors for heart disease. Smoking, poor diet, obesity, excess alcohol and being physically inactive are also risk factors for heart disease however these can be avoidable. Be proactive in your approach of heart disease. Keep track of your risk factors. Schedule regular and annual exams and keep your appointments. Talk with family members regarding their help history. There maybe factors that could increase your risk for heart disease and you may not even be aware of them. Make health choices everyday. We all know that this can be tough, especially for women. We all are pulled in each and every direction however we need

to stop at times and take care of ourselves. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and low-fat meat or fish. Snack healthy. Maintain a healthy weight. Exercise regularly by playing with the kids at the playground, walking your dog or dancing around your home while cleaning. Do not smoke. If you do smoke, quit. Limit your use of alcoholic beverages. Manage all your medical conditions. Even if you do have high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, by keeping them under control and understanding them you can cut your risk factors in half. If at anytime anyone thinks they are having a heart attack call 911. Quick treatment can save your life and prevent permanent damage.
