O

ne of the simplest ways to make a big impact on your home’s exterior is with your front door. But if you are tired of the old standards colors, you’re not alone -- experts predict bolder trends this year. “Exuberant hues will be popular this year as a way for homeowners to show the world their energy,” says Kate Smith, a color trend forecaster and president of Sensational Color. “For those going for a classic feel, colors that are vibrant, yet at the same time, offer comfort, warmth and reliability will reign.” For homeowners looking to express their “colorful selves,” consider selecting a paintable fiberglass door with a smooth finish. For example, those from ThermaTru Classic-Craft Canvas Collection and Pulse, feature clean lines, crisp angles and attractive glass configuration options, and are ideal for adding personal expression to a home. According to Smith, the top five door colors for the “exuberant homeowner” in 2014 include: • Capri: A tropical blue that wakes up natural woods and neutral surroundings, this hue adds a splash of energy. • Raucous Orange: This color demands attention with its energetic tone and makes the perfect punctuation point for homes with a modern look. • Dynamo: This flirty violet hue instantly up-

dates traditional color schemes for a trendier home front. • Relic Bronze: A deep, almost brown mustard color, “Relic Bronze” reflects aged beauty. • Quixotic Plum: This sophisticated deep purple is where trendy meets timeless. The top five door colors for those following the more classic trend of comfort, as identified by Smith include: • Georgian Bay: Brighter than dark navy, this step-above reserved blue is a trusted color when it comes to the welcoming message it sends to family and friends. • Show Stopper: Like classic red at dusk, “Show Stopper” adds a touch of mystery to this bright hue. A slight spin on traditional red, this color warmly welcomes people to a home. • Polished Mahogany: The deep, rich shade of brown has a staying power that traverses trends and captures a solid feeling for homeowners. • Classic French Grey: Stepping out of the shadows to stand on its own, this cool, neutral grey will continue to rule the palette in 2014. • Gulfstream: This bright, modern blue has an of-the-moment appeal. At the same time, it still feels rooted in something familiar and nostalgic for homeowners. Whether you follow new trends or stick to tradition, don’t forget to take your entire home’s exterior into consideration. From roof to door, a “top down” approach can help you pick color

combinations that are eye-pleasing and flow naturally to create curb appeal. For tips on picking the perfect colors for your home’s exterior, including the front door,

download a free copy of Smith’s e-book at www. thermatru.com. This year, don’t conform or be bored. With a paintable door, you can make fresh updates as often as you like.

Smart Tips for Your Tax Refund If you’re fortunate enough to receive a refund this tax season, it’s time to think about sensible uses for the extra income so, as Grandpa used to say, “it doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket.” The smartest thing to do with a little extra money, say experts, is to use it in a way that benefits your budget, generates extra income or helps you achieve financial peace of mind. This can be accomplished in several ways, including putting the money into a savings account with a competitive interest rate, investing in energy saving improvements for your home, or paying down debt. Or, if these options don’t move you, consider donating your refund to a charity of your choice. “There’s an old saying that money can’t buy happiness, and while this may be true, our research shows that saving money can impact

our sense of well-being,” says Diane Morais, Ally Bank deposits and line of business integration executive. In fact, among those with a savings account, 38 percent of respondents surveyed report feeling extremely, or very happy, versus 29 percent of those without one, according to a recent Ally Bank survey. Beyond a savings account, another smart move is to make a deductible IRA contribution. Not only will you earn interest, your contribution may be eligible for a tax deduction. Depending on the size of the refund, you may need to find a bank that has no minimum deposit requirement or monthly maintenance fees that can quickly eat away at your principal. For example, Ally Bank, Member FDIC, meets both criteria. To learn more about options that meet your specific personal needs, visit www.AllyBank.com.

While few people will regret saving money, another wallet-friendly option is to invest your tax refund into moneysaving projects, such as energy efficient home improvements. In addition to helping reduce utility costs, you may qualify for a tax credit, called the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit, on such projects as solar power and wind turbine upgrades. More infor-

mation can be found at www.Energy.gov. Also, consider paying off credit card debt to save on the interest expense and improve your credit score to help you obtain better terms for big ticket items like a car or a

home. For free budgeting and credit tips, visit www. AllyWalletWise.com. And finally, you may also want to consider making a donation to a charitable cause, which in some instances may reduce your tax liability.

Always check with a tax professional if this is a concern. Regardless of how you spend your refund, remember that it’s your hard-earned money, not a windfall -- so be sure to use it wisely.

FAT FOOD NATION

By Christina K Major

N

inety percent of all Americans that put weight on during the holidays. 80% of all Americans resolve to lose weight in the New Year. Weight loss supplements, plans, groups and gym sales are set to break double-digit billions in profits. Yes, billions. Why is America getting fatter? One reason is low nutrient value in foods. Because of massive over-farming, the nutrients in the soil have become depleted. In some cases, they are only minimally available, barely able to sustain the life of the plant. Choose organic foods, which are more sustainable and scientifically proven to have more nutrients. Choose meats that are from local, natural sources. Big, factory operations are designed to turn out fatty meats at cheap prices. That means cheap feeds, cheap living conditions and lots of antibiotics, growth hormones. It’s no wonder the majority of recalls for contaminated beef, chicken and pork come from big factories. Natural sources of meat

allow the animals humane conditions with room to move around, most of the time in pastures, just like they are meant to. Humane conditions also repress disease, so few antibiotics are needed. This is also better for the economy, keeping money in our local area. Nutritionally, the type of fats are healthier, the majority being the heart healthy Omega-3s. Finally, skip foods the come in a box. Sadly, the average America eats only 1 thing a day that did not come from a box or can. Boxed foods lose over half of the nutrient value and you need to eat twice as much. As a bonus, fat is replaced with the cheapest replacements: salts and sugars, which can lead to Type II Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. Fresh foods contain more nutrients per square inch than a whole box of processed foods. A single apple contains more fiber than a whole bowl of any cereal. A single serving of broccoli contains more calcium than a big glass of milk (and less contamination). A teaspoon of fresh parsley contains more Vitamin C than most

supplements. There are times where knowing what healthy foods to choose is hard, and that’s where you need the help of a professional nutritionist. Don’t forget, accountability and coaching result in a 98% success rate. It’s the fastest and safest weight loss out there. Here’s a great meal choice: Lightly sauté a mix of spinach, kale and endive with some garlic, basil and lemon juice. Spread over it a generous helping of steamed summer vegetables. Top off with a chilled dressing of olive oil, roasted almonds, oregano and salsa. Finish off with a dessert of a roasted apple drizzled with a touch of honey and cinnamon. This heaping pile of food has less calories, carbohydrates and fat than a bag of popcorn and has 10 times the nutrient value.
