Valley Vehicle Fin er Wildlife Refuge In Your VALLEY HO EBackyard IMPROVEMENT

Being a good neighbor means more than being friendly to the humans across the street, it also means being friendly to the animals in your yard. Making your yard a safe place for local wildlife should be a top lawn care priority. With that in mind, here are some tips for creating a healthy habitat for local critters. Be a Valuable Rest Stop Stock your garden with small native species of trees, shrubs and flowers to give wildlife needed nourishment, as well as cover from predators. A source of water can also be a great resource for visiting fauna. Whether it’s a pond or a bird bath, be sure this zone is well-maintained so you don’t inadvertently

create a haven for unwanted species. In the warmer months when mosquitoes are most active, you should change the bird bath water even more often.

is safe for birds. Unfortunately, birds don’t see clear glass. As a result, millions of birds die every year by striking glass. Don’t let your sliding glass doors or other windows become a death trap for birds. To protect birds, apply special decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight. For example, those from WindowAlert have the appearance of frosted glass, but glow like a stoplight for birds, so you don’t have to compromise your own view out your window. The brand also makes a high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid, which should be applied between decals. Get out the binoculars! With a few small actions, you can make your yard or garden a wildlife refuge.

Bad Chocolate: What To Do With The Cheap Stuff Christina K Major, Holistic Nutritionist, Naturopathic Doctor, Unfortunately, all the big names seem to be the bad stuff. If you don’t have a lot of the stuff, go ahead and have a treat. But, if you’ve been eating healthy for a while, I’m not sure you’ll enjoy it. Milk chocolate, especially the cheap stuff, is loaded with wax, chemicals, and sugar (or more chemicals if it’s sugar free). This stuff tastes bad to those who eat for their health. As we get used to healthy foods, chemicals start to stick out. Sugar tends to be too sweet. And we want rich flavor, not artificial crap. Now, I used to like peanut butter

cups. Not anymore. They are too sweet and sickly. I can taste how lifeless they are. On the other hand dark chocolate is bitter and so full of flavor. It stimulates your body to be good. It is actually good for your heart and can help replace cravings for candy and snacks. But, I do have a vice: Easter time – PB eggs. Y o u know t h e

ones: made by the church ladies. Hand rolled, hand dipped, and made with better stuff. Once place I know uses natural peanut butter and rich, dark chocolate. And, I only need 1/3 of an egg to be happy. A dozen eggs lasts me for weeks, just chipping off a little at a time. I choose quality over quantity and I’m happier and healthier. So, here’s my ideas for getting rid of cheap chocolate: 1. Wait until Halloween – most of the stuff can last that long because it’s full of chemicals 2. Summer gatherings – those that care won’t eat it 3. Finger painting 4. Rat traps 5. Give it away at work (it will go quick)

Are You Reaching for the Right Pain Medication? The use of opioid painkillers such as Vicodin and Oxycontin is on the rise and this trend is taking its toll. Opioids account for 46 deaths each day in the United States -- more than any other drug. “Surprisingly, opioids are not very effective pain medications, and they can also have serious side effects,” says Dr. Donald Teater, M.D., medical advisor to the National Safety Council. Acute pain includes dental pain, back pain, renal colic pain (kidney stones), sprains and fractures. What may be surprising to some is that studies show a combination of over-the-counter acetaminophen and ibuprofen is more effective at relieving acute pain than opioids. Not only are opioids less effective than NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory

drug) in particular instances, but they also are associated with more serious side effects. Some lesser-known side effects of opioids include gastrointestinal bleeding (more frequently associated with NSAIDS), rapid development of addiction, changes to the brain and cognitive abilities, driving impairment, increased risk of disability and decreased sex hormones. The elderly need to be particularly wary, as elderly adults taking opioids are at greater risk of having a cardiovascular event, have four times as many fractures than their counter-

parts not taking opioids, and have an 87 percent greater risk of dying. If you’re prescribed an opioid pain medication, consider discussing alternatives with your doctor, particularly if you’re treating acute pain. Taking the minimum dose for as short a time period as possible can help reduce your risk. “Since opioids are often abused illicitly, it is good practice to lock your medicine cabinet and dispose of any leftover medications properly when your course of treatment is over,” says Dr. Teater. “Drug take back programs are the safest, most environmentallyfriendly way to clean your medicine cabinet.” For the latest information on painkiller efficacy and risks, visit www.nsc. org/rxpainkillers.

Eliaspalooza in Mifflinburg The Elias Center for the Performing Arts in Mifflinburg, PA is proud to announce the first-ever Eliaspalooza, on Saturday, April 4. This full-day musical extravaganza will feature many of the area’s best musicians joining forces to celebrate the beginning of the Elias Center’s third season of diverse and exceptional musical and dramatic performances. The day’s music will range across multiple musical genres, with delicious treats for almost every musical appetite. All musicians are donating their time, and all proceeds from the day’s event will be used to help the Center upgrade its sound and lighting systems. Eliaspalooza will kick off in the morning with a children’s concert from 10:30 to 11:30 featuring three exceptional performers. Kj RiemensnyderWagner, Eric Sundberg, and Woody Wolfe have logged thousands of miles and more than a few years bringing musical cheer to younger audiences. They are masters of delightful, upbeat songs encouraging children to celebrate

and share the joys in their lives. The afternoon and evening portions of Eliaspalooza will begin at 12:30 p.m., with a special performance by Frank Wicher, one of the area’s most highly regarded country performers. He will be joined for this show by his beautiful and talented wife Bonnie, with her pure country voice, and his son Mason, an up-and-coming slide guitar player and country songwriter who’s been pleasing area audiences for the last couple years -- and making his parents very proud. At 1:30, the Wicher family passes the baton to the Dale’s Ridge Ramblers, which is the duo of Leo Armbruster and

George Potor, performing a collection of American roots music and accompanying themselves on banjo and acoustic guitar. At 2:30 our morning performers (Eric, Kj, and Woody) return to the stage for a series of rapid-fire solo sets, but this time they will be offering their favorite songs not geared specifically to kids. Each of these three singer-songwriters lays claim to some excellent tunes of his or her own, yet they also perform exquisitely well-crafted covers of folk and pop classics. Three delightful voices; three warm souls. At 4:30 the stage welcomes the trio of Lawson and Disorder. Larry Lawson (gorgeous

lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Joe DeCristopher (superb lead guitar and harmonies), and Carl Kirby (rock-solid upright bass and harmonies) find their inspiration in all corners of the American musical landscape. At 5:30 the one and only DePotorLand takes the stage. This trio of Joe DeCristopher, George Potor, and Fred Strickland (got it?) draws on a repertoire of witty originals, classic rock and blues, and pointed topical humor. At 6:30 the wonderful a cappella ensemble known as Black Tie will return to the Elias stage. This special EliasPalooza lineup features the quartet of Annie Smith, soprano, Karin Fullam, alto, Matt Poremsky, tenor, and Larry Mitchell, bass, under the direction of Matt Poremsky. At 7:30 it’s time for bluegrass! Strawberry Ridge takes the stage for an eclectic set of deliciously rendered bluegrass, folk, and blues. The band features Bob Shuey on lead guitar, Renee Goocey on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Jenn Shaffer on upright bass, and Mark Doncheski on banjo. This group showcases great pickin’ and sweet two- and three-part harmonies. They are not to be missed! At 8:30 Runaway Stroller hits the stage! If you’ve heard this incredible duo of Johanna Kodlick and Anthony Latt, you know you’re in for a rollicking musical treat. And finally, immediately after the Runaway Stroller set, many of the day’s musicians will join together for one Palooza of a finale. The tunes will be big and bold, the singing will be great, and the playing will be astounding! You won’t want to miss it! This full day of music at the Elias Center for the Performing Arts, on South Fifth Street in Mifflinburg, will also include food for purchase through Taylor Consession and adult beverages for purchase at the Center. If you like good music, this day will keep a smile on your face. The entire event will be hosted by former radio personality Than Mitchell. Children twelve and younger will be admitted free to the morning portion of EliasPalooza if they are accompanied by an adult. Adult tickets for the morning are $10. A limited number of all-day tickets will be available for only $20. And remember that all money will go directly to the Performing Arts Center Sound and Lighting fund! Kick spring off with enthusiasm! Join us for EliasPalooza!

Welcoming spring comes with some concerns for keeping your dog safe & healthy Dogs that wear a coat in cold weather are accustomed to having their body temperature managed. As the season changes, he might need a lighter weight coat or sweater to help him transition to cool temps before it is warm enough for no coat at all. Wearing a coat also can cause matts and tangles as the dog starts shedding his winter hair for the lighter summer hair. The shedding hair is dryer and more likely to matt. Make sure to comb and brush regularly and feed a diet that is high quality so it contains the protein and oils needed to help the shedding and bring in a beautiful, healthy summer coat for your dog. Professional grooming may be needed to help with the process of shedding out the old hair. Hazards outside include melting snow banks along roads that may be full of road salt. Do not let your dog lap up water runoff from these snow piles. Carry water so your dog has a safe water source when thirsty. Spring lawn care and landscaping can bring hazardous chemicals and plants into contact with your dog. Beware of lawn chemicals and fertilizers as many are toxic, including herbicides and pesticides for lawns and gardens. Toxic plants include many spring plants and bulbs. Also cocoa mulch is a popular mulch but is toxic to dogs. Warmer temperatures invite outdoor walks and activities. Gradually increase the amount of exercise your dog is getting, especially if he put on some pounds over the winter. Over doing can cause soreness, even injury. Dogs can get springtime allergies too. Over time he may develop sensitivities to allergens that didn’t bother him other years. Spring brings pollen from flowering trees, dandelions, and tulips. Dust, mold, and insects can also be allergens. Talk with your veterinarian if your dog develops itchy skin, red feet, sneezing, etc. that can point to allergies. By thinking ahead you can head off problems with springtime so you and your dog can enjoy spring!

Chocolate Pie with Peanut Butter Crust

1231 Sheridan Street Williamsport, PA 17701

What You Need 3 c crispy rice cereal 1 1/2 c peanut butter, smooth 2 pkg (small) instant chocolate pudding or 1 large box Milk per package instructions (Note: you will use only 2/3 of recommended milk) Whipped topping or whipped cream, optional Directions • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. • In large bowl mash crispy rice cereal to medium-fine. Then add peanut butter. Mix and incorporate well.

• Press and line a pie plate with mixture. • Bake crust at 325 degrees for 30 minutes to firm up crust. Then let crust cool. • Mix chocolate pudding per directions but use just 2/3 of recommended milk (this makes the pie firmer). Place in refrigerator to firm and chill. • When crust has cooled, add cooled pudding mixture. Chill in refrigerator until time to serve. • When served, add whipped topping and shaved chocolate if you choose.
