River Town Team .... Invites the Public to Plant Tree Seedlings by the river On Thursday, April 19, at 5pm Lewisburg Landing Park on S Front and St George Streets The Lewisburg River Town Team has launched a Green Team that’s tackling conservation and maintenance tasks above and beyond the brief of the Borough Crew at the Lewisburg Landing Park by the St George St Boat Ramp. Every Monday evening the group is tackling litter and Japanese Knotweed and the like. In addition to those weekly sessions, this coming Thursday they will also be organizing a tree planting. This time of year there are many regional plant sales

offered by the County Conservation Districts to assist property owners and conservation groups with doing the right thing and working to reestablish Penn’s Woods. This activity will entail planting some tree seedlings in the no mow zone established last year at this time on the site. The public is invited to take part in the tree planting (as well as any other ongoing Green Team activities). The new trees will join the mixed crop of deciduous and evergreens put in last spring. Some of those didn’t survive, but many are staking their claim to the site. People are welcome to come out and have a go at putting in future shade. Volunteers should wear work clothes and sturdy

shoes. If you have gloves and tools to bring, please do, but know that there will also be loaners on hand. The process is somewhat strenuous, but not excessively so, given the small size of the trees. Those who are not up for digging and planting will be able to help in other ways, e.g. with litter pick up, watering, and taking photos. To get a sense of what the green team has been up to

this spring, visit the group’s facebook photo album at www.bit.ly/ LNCGreenTeam2018 (case sensitive). For more information, please contact the Lewisburg Neighborhoods office at 570-523-0114, elmstreet@dejazzd.com, or text 781-366-0726. LEWISBURG’S: WALK IT! BIKE IT COMMITTEE MEETING Last month in response to growing expressions of public concern about traffic conflicts on Stein Lane and on Newman Road, Walk It! Bike It! Lewisburg invited the public to attend a Listening Session to hear and be heard on the subject. This month, the public is again invited to a Report Back on what came up last month. YOUR HOMETOWN COMMUNITY PUBLICATION OF THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY • THE VALLEY TRADER “An important aspect of effort is that it’s controllable,” Concannon says. “It comes from inside. If athletes focus on working hard to improve, performing well, and have the freedom to make mistakes so they can learn from them, they’ll end up becoming better athletes.” Self-discipline: Effort opens up the pathways for the values of selfdiscipline and the ability to selfassess. “I’d rather have an athlete on my team who works hard to improve, focuses on what they can do well, and learns from mistakes,” Concannon says. “Those kids will grow as athletes, perform better, and develop the character of a successful person. These values will most certainly impact an athlete’s life beyond the youth sports experience—education, profession, citizenship, personal values, and even family life.”

Wrestling teaches values that go far beyond winning and losing and last long after one’s wrestling career is done.

Any ex-wrestler can quickly tell you that.

since success is only defined by the scoreboard and results are not always something they can control.” How to overcome failure: In wrestling, failure at some point is inevitable. A wrestler will lose a match. They may lose several matches, or not even win in those early years. They may fail to master a specific move in practice, growing frustrated with each failed attempt. Wrestling teaches the importance of “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” If a young kid is learning how to code, or working on a math problem, they may not get it right. Through wrestling, they have learned that if they continue to work on their failures, they can eventually get it—and achieve success. Effort: Repeatedly trying to overcome challenges, and failures, takes effort. That’s another value that shouldn’t be overlooked, Concannon says.

to goals and work to attain them because they are trying to compete and, ultimately, win. This creates an opportunity for great things to happen. Trying to win is the fabric of the sports experience, but should not be the sole emphasis.” If the sole emphasis is the scoreboard, then athletes end up on a path of limitations, says Concannon. Focusing on the scoreboard/final outcome can lead to a “results” focus instead of a “process” or “performance” focus. Athletes who focus on results, says Concannon, end up, too often, comparing themselves to others and focusing on avoiding mistakes. “This is limiting,” Concannon says. “The scoreboard-focused athletes end up playing with anxiety. They have trouble coping with failure
