The 16th century Spanish Carmelite priest St. John of the Cross wrote a poem titled “DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL”. Your first reaction to that title might be negative and maybe fearful. However, if we look deeper into the darkness hopefully we can see that at the end of the “night” our spiritual journey has brought us to a stronger faith, personal growth, restored hope and discovery of who we are in our relationship with God. If we are experiencing a “dark night” of our soul, we could be living with deep emotional pain, depression, uncontrollable sadness, feelings of abandonment, mental and physical fatigue and thoughts that nothing makes sense in our life. We feel helpless and “burned out”. We need to believe that our darkness is not negative. It can be very positive in our health and healing. We need to view the darkness of our life as a gracious act by God who knows that spiritual growth and strength many times rises out of pain, suffering and tragedy. See, the basic essence of our experience in the darkness of our soul is a loss of connection with God for a moment in time – maybe a brief moment or even years. Our darkness comes from a lack of belief in the power of prayer and meditation. In our darkness, we feel like God has abandoned us, we feel a loss of words in our prayers and then an intense feeling of fear and loneliness overshadows us. For those of us who are of the Christian faith, we see the ultimate expression of a “dark night” in the words of Jesus on the cross. “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?” We know that God never abandoned Jesus or turned away from him. God will never abandon us if we stay in communication with God.

Most people never think about the condition of their chimney until they see something unusual or experience some type of major issue. Blockages, falling bricks or chunks of masonry around the base of the chimney, water stains on the interior of the house, efflorescence (white stains) on the exterior of the chimney and of course chimney fires are just a few of the things that will cause a homeowner to finally seek out a Chimney Professional. As with any home heating system, preventative maintenance is the key to keeping everything running smoothly, economically and dependably. While many chimney problems are easily and economically addressed if caught in the early stages, an extensive tear down and rebuild may be in order if the damage has gone too far and will naturally be much more expensive. Often the installation of a Stainless Steel Chimney Re-Lining System is the most cost effective, speedy and permanent solution when addressing the various chimney code violations or deterioration issues we see every day. The Chimney Relining systems we install carry a “forever” transferable warranty when inspected annually so you can rest assured any problem has been addressed once and for all. Most people who heat with wood are aware of the importance of regularly sweeping the chimney in order to remove any flammable creosote buildup but oil and gas furnace chimneys need attention too. In both oil and gas furnace applications, the acids and moisture contained in the exhaust gasses eventually destroy all masonry chimneys from the inside out turning the flue to a sand-like consistency. Remember, evidence of deterioration on the outside means there’s a serious problem on the inside. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that all chimneys and connector pipes be inspected annually and that cleaning, maintenance and repairs shall be done if necessary (NFPA 211-45-13). They also recommend having a chimney inspection anytime the heating appliance is replaced and having a level 2 chimney inspection done prior to any Real Estate transaction. So, when you’re outside sprucing up around the house this spring, please and schedule remember to call a local, full time an inspection/ cleaning. You’ll be glad you did!

KEYNOTE CONFERENCE ABOUT DEMENTIA IN OLDER ADULTS WITH MH/ID James Siberski, M.S., C.M.C., CRmT, assistant professor and coordinator of the geriatric care management program at Misericordia University, will deliver the keynote at the Dauphin County Aging and Intellectual Disabilities Team Project workshop, “Recognizing Dementia in Older Adults with Intellectual Disabilities and Associated Behaviors,’’ on Friday, June 5 from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Giant Community Room, Harrisburg, Pa. The workshop includes a continental breakfast, work materials and networking opportunities. It also has been approved for 3.5 continuing education credits for social workers. There is no cost to attend the workshop, but there is a fee for attendees who request continuing education credits. The workshop will provide helpful information to direct support workers, clinicians, program staff, administrators and families who are concerned about or involved with adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) that has been affected by dementia. Afterward, attendees will be able to explain the changes in DSM-5 as they relate to neurocognitive disorders; utilize one screening tool for people with ID and those without; describe the nature of dementia, its occurrence and prevalence, and how it affects older adults with ID and three differences between the non-ID populations; summarize five measures that can prevent, postpone or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease; outline a 36-point plan to im-

prove memory and restore function to clients with a neurocognitive disorder, and explain three new research developments in 2014-15. Anyone who is interested in information about aging and ID services should attend the workshop, including hospital and nursing home social workers, aging care managers, and case management unit and mental health and intellectual disabilities provider staff. Siberski received his Bachelor of Arts degree

in psychology from Wilkes University and his master’s degree in human service administration from Misericordia University. He is an affiliate member of the American Geriatric Psychiatry Association and is certified in remotivation therapy, gerontology, and by the National Academy of Certified Care Managers. Siberski is also an editorial advisory board member of Aging Well Magazine, a member of the National Association of Professional Ge-

riatric Care Managers, the Luzerne-Wyoming Counties Elder Abuse Task Force Committee and a former member of the board of directors of the Greater Pennsylvania Alzheimer’s Association. He has been published in multiple publications, including the Journal of Psychological Nursing, presented numerous lectures and has consulted on issues in geriatric, psychiatric and intellectual disability populations.
