THE LIGHT OF RECOVERY In my life, I have walked into both the light and the darkness more times than I can remember because of my personal choices, decisions and life-styles. At times, I felt very much alone in my journey. However, I believe that I am not alone in the way I feel. I have known many people who have felt the same way. Those thoughts and feelings will form the basis of my future articles in this column. Hopefully, we can all grow healthier, understand our behaviors in better ways and become more positive about life. Recovery is defined as “The act or process of becoming healthy after an illness or injury. The act or process of returning to a normal state after a period of difficulty. The return of something that has been lost or stolen.” I believe most of us can relate to those definitions as we think about our lives, the results of our actions and decisions and where our choices have taken us to the place we find ourselves today in life. In order to recover from the dark places of the wrong decisions, the key words to think about in the definitions of recovery are “The Act or Process”. First, we need to acknowledge that we are in the state of life we have found ourselves today is because of our own personal decisions and choices. To heal and recover mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically, we need to take personal positive actions and realize that healthy recovery is a process. Within the words of these future articles we will look at topics such as: “Perception of Self” (which is my workshop on understanding our behaviors and why we do what we do), addictions and addictive behaviors, depression, negative thoughts and feelings, domestic violence, destructive life-styles, spirituality, faith, ministry and even love. Hopefully, we will understand that there is a difference between sex and love in a relationship and that sex, love and relationships are not one in the same all the time. You do not need physical sex to find true love in a relationship. The most important aspect in love is to first love yourself and appreciate the person you are inside. See, relationships teach us about our own love. Love is not enough for a relationship. We need to learn specific skills to have a healthy relationship, not only with another person but, most important, with ourselves. We are not born with these skills and we seldom learn them in school. One important topic that we will look at periodically will be the difference between Loneliness and Aloneness. It is not always bad to be Alone. We need “quiet time”. However, the continued state of Loneliness can be very harmful. Pennsylvania Counties Still In Drought Despite the recent surge of surface water caused by snow melt, parts of the state have below-average groundwater levels. The lack of groundwater recharge has caused the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to issue a drought watch for 27 counties across Pennsylvania. Low groundwater levels can cause well-fed water supplies, both private and public, to go dry. The very dry fall and below-normal precipitation in January and February have contributed to low groundwater levels in the northeast and central portions of the state. The increasing temperatures and melting snow have helped, but groundwater levels may not be back to normal before the summer. The 27 counties under the drought watch issued today are Berks, Bradford, Cambria, Carbon, Clinton, Columbia, Indiana, Lackawanna, Lawrence, Luzerne, Lycoming, McKean, Mercer, Monroe, Montour,

Northumberland, Pike, Potter, Schuylkill, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Wayne, Westmoreland, and Wyoming. All Pennsylvanians are advised to heed this drought watch by conserving their water use and consumption. To reduce their water use, residents can: • Run water only when absolutely necessary; and avoid keeping water flowing while brushing teeth, or turning on the shower many minutes before use; • Check for household leaks – a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water each day; • Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads; • Replace older appliances with high-efficiency, front-loading models that use about 30 percent less water and 40 to 50 percent less energy; and • Install low-flow plumbing fixtures and aerators on faucets.

DEP is notifying all water suppliers in the affected areas of the need to monitor their supplies, particularly those that rely upon groundwater, and update their drought contingency plans as necessary. A drought watch declaration is the first and leastsevere level of the state’s three drought classifications. It calls for a voluntary five percent reduction in non-essential water use and puts large water consumers on notice to begin planning for the possibility of reduced water supplies.

Through a cooperative program with the U.S. Geological Survey, DEP helps fund a statewide network of gauges to monitor groundwater levels and stream flows. This network provides the state’s drought coordinator with comprehensive data that is used to determine drought classifications. In addition to precipitation, groundwater and stream flow levels, DEP monitors soil moisture and water supply storage. This data is shared with other state and federal agencies. DEP also offers water conservation recommendations and water audit procedures for commercial and industrial users, such as food processors, hotels and educational institutions.
