Miami, Bruce Lansky was greeted by a sign that said: “Welcome Bruce Lansky, The King of Giggle Poetry.” The name stuck. So it made sense for him to pick “Giggle Poetry” as the name for the popular children’s poetry website which is visited by more than 100,000 visitors every month. CELEBRATE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY MONTH

INDEPENDENT SENIOR LIVING

By Amy Zalar

A

hh, April! Spring has finally arrived! It is time to open the windows and allow the winter air to leave and the fresh, crisp air of spring in. April is also National Occupational Therapy month. This month is designated to celebrate those professionals who work in this highly specialized field. Occupational therapy or OT is therapy based to help people with disabilities perform everyday tasks through the use of therapeutic methods, assistive technology and environmental modifications. Therapists retrain patients in the activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, cooking and daily chores. Those individuals with brain, spinal cord or back injury, neurological disorders, strokes, musculoskeletal disorders, skin disorders and orthopedic conditions are just some of the population that an Occupational Therapist would see. Occupational therapy shortens the recovery time, improves function and helps people become more self-sufficient in everyday tasks. Occupational therapy assessments and interventions can help re-

duce the risk of falls in the elderly population as well. A therapist can and will access

the home to accommodate those in need to make the tasks of living easier.
