The Courtyard Theater, located in the Susquehanna Valley Mall is looking forward to a visit from a traveler from Transsexual, Transylvania. On Friday, October 3rd, and for three more nights in October, a spaceship resembling a castle will land LIVE at the theater and the cult musical “The Rocky Horror Show” will inhabit the theater. Audience members are warned that the play, although rated PG for its theme, has been known to have audiences that transform the event into an “R” rated event, by using “colorful responses” to the action taking place on the stage. Richard O’Brien, who in the early 1970’s was an unemployed actor living in London, wrote the play one winter just to pass the time. O’Brien loved Sci-Fi and B horror movies and was a fan of Steve Reeve movies and ‘50s rock and roll, all of which are incorporated into “Rocky”. He showed the play to Australian Director Jim Sharman who directed it in a small experimental theater, Upstairs at the Royal Court Theater in Chelsea, England. The working title of “It Came From Denton High” was changed before previews to ‘The Rocky Horror Show” and, shortly after it opened, was moved to a larger venue. Producer Lou Adler saw the show in London and brought it to America, first to L.A. and then to New York where it finally landed at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway, in 1975. The play was far from a financial success, but never-theless, 20th Century Fox decided that it might be a send-up and a tribute to the 1930s sci-fi films and decided to make it in England casting two unknown American actors, Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as Brad and Janet. The film opened in the US in September of 1975 and didn’t do well. It was withdrawn very quickly from many of the theaters. It was released to colleges later that year and finally found its way into midnight showing in theaters along with other cult movies such as “Pink Flamingos” and “Reefer Madness”. There, in those showings it started to attract followers and it became a sensation at the Waverly Theatre in New York and later at the 8th Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village where it was shown every Saturday night at midnight. It is now considered the longest running release in film history. The Rocky Horror Show will be presented Friday, October 3rd and 10th and Saturday October 4th and 11th at 7:00 PM. There will be no matinees for this production. because of the popularity of this play, people interested in attending the musical should purchase tickets well in advance.

YOGURT & DIABETES It was all over the news: ‘Eat Yogurt – Cure Diabetes’ But was it true? Yes… and no. First off, if you’ve read my stuff for a while now, you know I’m against miracle cures. They don’t exist. No one food, herb or pill is going to make you instantaneously better. Second, eating yogurt can help when done right. There are conditions, and when you look at the study with yogurt, you’ll see lots of them. Let me break it down: • The actual study never said yogurt will cure diabetes, it was all media hype • The study did show eating yogurt reduced the amounts of sugar in the blood and reduced cravings for sugar by about 10% over those that didn’t eat yogurt • The study had no say on whether this conclusively helped diabetes or not. How we got from observation to cure is simple media hype. It’s all to sell the papers. Here’s what nutritionists take from this: • It’s a well-known fact pro-biotics, like found in yogurt, improve digestive function and reduce sugar cravings • Fermented foods have more vitamins available and are easily digested, which reduces food cravings • The fats found in whole milk yogurt, from organic sources, are diverse and healthy when part of an overall diet rich in vegetables And here are a few other things we know:

ot dogs are a perennial favorite for Americans, especially in summer. More than seven billion hot dogs are eaten in the three months between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. While traditional preparations and fixings are always a hit, consider packing a little more punch with your dogs this summer. From exotic meat preparations to buns to tasty toppings, there is room for creativity. “When I think of hot dogs, I see endless possibilities. Toppings are what take a dog from hohum to haute,” says Russell Van Kraayenburg, hot dog aficionado and author of the new guide to America’s favorite food obsession, “Haute Dogs: Recipes for Delicious Hot Dogs, Buns, and Condiments.” Inspired globally, Kraayenburg seeks to reinvent the wheel where this classic is concerned. In time for Memorial Day, he offers a recipe for the “Michigan Dog” aka “The Michiganer,” a spicy, tomato-heavy take on the chili dog that’s popular all over the northeast and even in Quebec. Ingredients • 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil • 1 large white onion, diced • 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbs ground chili powder • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1/8 tsp ground cayenne pepper • 1 lb ground beef • 1 cup beef stock • 8 oz tomato paste • 4 classic buns • 4 all-beef hot dogs • Yellow mustard • Diced white onions • Hot sauce, optional Directions • Prepare the chili sauce: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook until soft and translucent, about eight minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic and cook for another two minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt, pepper, spices and beef. Cook until beef is browned and no trace of pink remains. Reduce heat to medium-low and add beef stock and tomato paste. Stir until evenly combined. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside. • Get out 4 classic buns. Panfry all-beef hot dogs on a flattop. Place the dogs in the buns. Top each with a huge pile of chili, a handful of diced onions, and a thin line of yellow mustard. Add a few drops of hot sauce on top, if desired.
