Outdoor Enthusiasts: Tips to Prevent Bites and Burns Nearly half of all Americans participate in at least one outdoor activity each year, according to statistics from the Outdoor Foundation. And while many of those exercising outdoors take necessary precautions to reduce their risk for injury, they are not always as dedicated to skin protection. “It’s ironic that protecting exposed skin is overlooked by so many outdoor enthusiasts otherwise committed to their health and wellness,” says Brevard, Florida-based dermatologist, Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick.

During the long days of summer, outdoor enthusiasts should take the following steps to avoid bites, burns and more. Mosquito Protection Mosquito bites are not just a nuisance; they are associated with Dengue Fever, Zika, West Nile and Chikungunya viruses. Ward off itch, discomfort and more serious threats by avoiding standing water whenever possible, and dressing in loose long sleeves and pants. Use a DEET-free repellent such as BullFrog Mosquito Coast, which repels mosqui-

toes for up to eight hours. The formula is a particularly good option for outdoor enthusiasts. Unlike DEET formulations, there is no need to wash it off when returning indoors. Different from repellent alone, it also offers SPF 30 sun protection, so you can pack light when you’re on the move. Sun Protection One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime, and men ages 15 to 39 are 55 percent more likely to die of melanoma than women in the same age group. However, a recent survey from Bullfrog Sunscreen found

that while 85 percent of male outdoor sports enthusiasts ages 18 to 54 claim their prime motivation for engaging in outdoor sports is “health and wellness,” two in 10 respondents do not use sunscreen at all. Of the remaining 80 percent who said they do use sunscreen, 56 percent use it only occasionally. Those spending time outdoors should wear a hat and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside, and then reapply at least every two hours or after swimming, sweating and immediately after towel drying. able, sweat-resistant formula like BullFrog Land Sport is ideal for tennis, golf and other land sports, while an advanced water-resistant formula should be used for swimming and other water sports. More skin safety tips can be found at BullFrogSun-

screen.com. While the warmer months are a great time for all your favorite outdoor activities, from hiking to swimming to camping, this time of year comes with its own health hazards. Luckily, there are many steps you can take to protect skin.

I just love going to Artisan Hearing Technologies. Jennifer takes time with me no matter what my needs are. I thought that my hearing aids would be hard to get used to, but it was natural. And I love being able to hear. The customer service is fantastic and the secretarial staff is very friendly at Artisan. I often don’t look forward to going to an appointment, but I always look forward to seeing the girls at Artisan.

Wicked weather can happen anytime, anywhere. Being prepared will offer you, your family and your home greater protection. Here is what to know. Take Shelter Oftentimes, the safest place to be during a storm is at home or in a designated shelter, depending on the storm’s severity. That said, it’s important to know more about how your home was constructed. Keep in mind that new homes are subject to regional safety standards to help ensure they can stand up to extreme conditions likely to occur in the area. So, if you live in an older home, consider retrofitting it with newer products that are more resistant to high winds. If you live in a manufactured home, you can rest easier knowing that your home was subject to robust compliance and quality assurance regulations enacted by the federal government in 1976, and was engineered for wind safety and energy efficiency based on the geographic region in which you bought it. Continued on page 13 Even so, proper installation is crucial for maximum safety, including additional structures added by the homeowner, such as an awning, deck, carport or sunroom. Indeed,

a 2014 Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety test found that newer manufactured homes performed better at high winds than traditional-built homes when attached structures are properly installed. The Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) says the building design criteria and anchoring systems for modern manufactured homes allow them to perform better in a storm than ones built before 1976, and that federal wind standards became even stronger in 1994. It’s also a good idea to have a professional check the anchoring system on an older manufactured home, especially one built prior to 1976. If you live in a manufactured home land-lease community, contact your community manager for assistance with identifying a qualified inspector. If your manufactured home is located on private property, a local licensed manufactured home installer can be hired to inspect the home’s anchoring and tie-down system. To learn more, visit manufacturedhousing.org. Get Stocked Up Taking shelter in a storm is easier when you are equipped to do so. Maintain

a well-stocked supply of nonperishable food items, fresh water, batteries and a first aid kit. It may also be wise to purchase a generator, however it’s crucial to follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions and to never operate the generator in an enclosed space. Tune In Listen to local news to get the latest weather updates and safety instructions. Keep a battery-operated radio handy so you can stay up-todate even if the power should go out for a long period.

Today’s weather forecasting technologies often provide advance notice of weather patterns capable of producing conditions such as severe wind and tornadoes, so you can know whether it’s time to seek shelter in the basement or evacuate the area. If a home, site-built or manufactured, does not have a below-ground basement, have a plan in place to seek below-ground or other appropriate shelter nearby when necessary. It’s also important to follow evacuation orders when issued.

Checklist: 5 Camping Essentials for a Safe and Enjoyable Adventure More than 30 million Americans camp in tents yearly, according to the Outdoor Foundation. As with any outdoor adventure, having the necessary equipment is crucial. Whether you’re hiking through backcountry or headed to an established campsite, this checklist will help you prepare for your expedition. 1. Navigation Approximately 9 million campers backpack to outdoor destinations, making navigation a top safety necessity. Remember that camping often means leaving behind cell coverage, Internet access or a GPS signal, making such low-tech gear as a compass and map mandatory. Other potential tools include a topographic map combined with an altimeter to help gauge your journey’s terrain and altitude. 2. Insulation Knowing climate and weather conditions is vital. According to Backpacker.com, clothing is just as important as a tent or sleeping bag to stay insulated. Outerwear should repel rain and snow, but also breathe so you don’t get wet from perspiration. Your base layer should be made of moisture-wicking

fabric -- not cotton --- to prevent chafing. Consider that day and night temperatures can differ greatly, so layer clothing, and choose materials and thicknesses appropriate for your destination -- and don’t forget a hat and extra socks. Bring along T-Rex Clear Repair Tape to mend holes or tears in tents or clothing. It sticks to both wet and dry surfaces, ensuring an easy and instant fix to keep gear insulated in any weather condition. 3. Illumination Campers should always bring enough illumination to be able to safely see and move Continued on Page 16

SPECIALIZING IN

after sundown, especially in case you get delayed, lost or separated from the group. While flashlights are obvious choices, headlamps are popular, as they allow for hands-free operation, and are typically small and lightweight. Another feature to consider is a strobe lighting mode for emergency situations. Extra batteries are essen-

tial as battery lighting was the most popular purchase among adult campers in 2014, according to the Outdoor Foundation. Available in single-use or rechargeable models, ideally the batteries should offer a balance of long duration, high performance and environmental friendliness. 4. Emergency/First Aid Kit Accidents happen to even the most experienced and best prepared campers. Your kit can prove invaluable if you, or another member of your group, are in a first-aid situation, need gear repaired or are under other tense conditions. SectionHiker.com proposes supplies such as a pre-assembled first-aid kit, a multi-tool, knife, scissors,

screwdriver and safety pins. You can then add other items based on preference and experience. A useful addition is a high-quality tape, like T-Rex Tape, as it can be used to repair hiking poles, patch sleeping bags, make a rope, temporarily stabilize an injury or broken boot, and more. T-Rex Clear Repair Tape can even be used to fix cracked GPS or phone screens and flashlights. 5. Hydration and Nutrition Food is an enjoyable part of camping, but deciding what to bring will depend on whether you’re backpacking miles to your site or camping near your car, as well as how many days you’ll be gone. If you’re trekking far, be prepared with lightweight and nourishing options.

Water is essential but heavy, so check the area for potential natural sources. “Mountaineering” suggests carrying a collapsible water reservoir and purification tablets to ensure water safety. Freeze-dried meals are popular selections, however, no-cook meals with long shelf lives are better in arid regions. Other possibilities include energy bars, nuts, dried fruits or jerky. Never leave out animal-attracting leftovers, as that could attract unwanted intruders. “Essentials” are called so for a reason. Don’t be caught camping without proper supplies. With these necessities, it will be easy to prepare for and enjoy your next adventure in the great outdoors.

DAY TRIPPIN’ Battle of the Burgs is Almost Here!

Volunteers for the Battle of the ‘Burgs fundraiser for the Michael P. Baker Community Impact Fund met recently to prepare for the June 9 event. Pictured, L to R, are: Dan Greak, Sue Baker, Brigit Baker, Christina Greak, Logan Greak, Ryley Greak and Erica Shames. Volunteers missing from the photo include: Tony Massoud, Dr. Michelle Keller, Brian Keller, Wendy Claus, Scott Smith, Georgene Smith, Michael Zechman, Gloria Phillips, Scott Edmonds and Sue Edmonds. Volunteers for the Battle of the ‘Burgs met recently at Ard’s to iron out the final details for the race and post-race party June 9, starting at 6:30 p.m. The event, now in its third year, is a fundraiser for the Michael P. Baker Community Impact Fund, which distributes funds to area families struggling with catastrophic illness or circumstance and is administered by the First Community Foundation of Williamsport. Racers – both walkers and runners – will start at the Lewisburg end of the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail, at 16th Street, since Lewisburg won last year’s race. SEVENTH ANNUAL WINFIELD BENEFIT AUCTION

While all homeowners may wish they had unlimited resources to make upgrades, most people need to prioritize a bit due to time and money. For many these days, the goal is extending living and entertaining areas outdoors: 56 percent of homeowners are making updates to improve their yards for entertaining, according to a Houzz Landscaping Trends study. To that end, the number one design element in outdoor renovations is a fire feature. This could be because outdoor fireplaces extend the season by adding warmth, provide a visual focal point around which to gather, and offer an opportunity to personalize the space. And if you are looking for a great return on investment, this addition can be beneficial when it’s time to sell: an outdoor fireplace can increase a home’s value up to $3,500, according to the Marshall & Swift Residential Cost Handbook.
