SVC Celebrates the VALLEY HO E IMPROVEMENT Roaring 20’s The ’20s began with the aftermath of WWI and ended with the onset of the Great Depression. In between, it was an era of unprecedented social, artistic, and cultural dynamism. SVC celebrates the decade with a collection of some of America’s most cherished songs, including music written by Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Victor Herbert, and more. The Chorale’s Roaring ‘20s Pop Concert features a special guest appearance by the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. Rick Benjamin is the group’s founder and director, and this marks the third time he’s collaborated with SVC music director and conductor William Payn. “Bill and I go back a long way together,” Rick says. “I’m a big fan and he’s a good friend, too. Bill approached me a few years ago about staging a Roaring ’20s performance together, and it’s exciting to finally see it come to fruition.” Rick isn’t just leading 12 incredibly talented orchestra musicians on the stage. He’s also played a key role in programming – researching, cross-referencing and making final selections from hundreds (“a very big pile”) of potential scores. But the collaboration didn’t end there. “Bill and I have been working closely together at rehearsals. I will be conducting the first half of the concert, Bill will lead the second.” Attention to detail and historical accuracy marks the concert’s programming. “Our performance will be an accurate, note-for-note rendition of those wonderful classic

compositions,” Rick reports. To him, Showboat is a special highlight. “This is truly a groundbreaking musical based on a serious dramatic novel with a strong moral message.” Rick promises an “exciting and fun” concert. “It’s music for the entire family. Older audience members will recognize our familiar Roaring ’20s numbers. Younger ones will appreciate hearing these wonderful old standards and learn from the experience. I hope to see you there!”

While there are many differences between the major world religions, there are just as many similarities. Fostering a conversation about religion and incorporating spirituality into your life can benefit you and your family, believe experts. “Finding common ground in the various religious scriptures, history and spiritual practices can help us reach peaceful solutions to social issues,” says author Star Chang, whose new book, “Coming Home: A Spiritual and Religious Dialogue,” explores diverse religious teachings. Chang is offering spiritual practices to incorporate into your everyday life, regardless of your faith. • The goals of the major world religions are similar; however the ways of achieving them can differ. For example, many religions practice “love” to achieve their goals. Everything you do, do it with love.

Have faith in what you’re doing, even if all the signs aren’t clear. • The goal of the sciences is to find the ultimate truth, which is what the major world religions are also seeking. Scientists attain this goal by using external tools, while religion draws upon an internal force. Put both to good use to tackle your goals. • Human beings consist of three parts -- mind, body and spirit. The spirit is the lead, the mind is in-between and the body is the follower. Confusion will arise if the mind or the body becomes the lead. Check in with your spirit often. • Tolerance is a practice that comes from the heart. Make sure your heart is light and free of judgment. • If there is negativity underlying your actions, the good you do will not be felt. To do the most good you can, find balance and come from a place of positivity. • Many major religions emphasize having a good heart, sound thought and good behavior as universal virtues. Help others with these three principles in mind. • Be kind to all people and beings without discrimination. These teachings are abundant in many world religions, and were as true thousands of years ago as they are today. • Get an innocuous conversation started amongst family members and friends. A spiritual text, such as “Coming Home,” can make a great gift for someone moving on to the next life stage, such as a high school or college graduate; and can be a helpful way to revisit world religions and spiritual concepts. More information can be found at www.BookComingHome. com. In our modern society, it can easy to lose touch with your spirituality. But exploring this side of yourself can help you have a deeper appreciation and broader understanding of other cultures and systems of belief.

Give Mom a Day Off for Mother’s Day A mother’s work is challenging -- even after the kids are all grown up. So while flowers make a nice Mother’s Day gesture, consider going the extra mile. Here are some great ways to give mom the day off. Breakfast in Bed Give Mom a welcome break from the kitchen. Start her day with breakfast in bed using this recipe for Buttermilk Pancakes with Orange Compote: Ingredients For the compote: • 3 large oranges • 2 teaspoons Bonne Maman Orange Marmalade For the pancake batter: • 4 tablespoons melted butter plus a little extra for the pan • 1/2 cup buttermilk or whole milk • 2 large eggs • 1/4 cup superfine sugar • Pinch salt • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 4 tablespoons Bonne Maman Orange Marmalade Directions • Cut the peel and pith away from two oranges and cut into neat segments. Drop into a small saucepan with the marmalade. Add the pared rind from the remaining orange, cut into long fine shreds, plus the juice. Put the pan over low heat and simmer gently for to 2 to 3 minutes. • Meanwhile, whisk the melted butter into the milk with the eggs, sugar and salt. • Sift the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl and pour in the liquid ingredients. Whisk until smooth. • Heat a large, nonstick frying pan and brush with a little melted butter. Ladle the batter into the pan, allowing one ladle per pancake. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Small bubbles will appear on the surface of the pancakes when they are ready to flip over. • Stir the marmalade until smooth, then drizzle 1 tsp over the uncooked side of each pancake before turning. Continue cooking for an additional 2 minutes before removing from the pan. Cover the cooked pancakes with a towel; this prevents them from drying out. • Serve the pancakes in small stacks with one or two spoonfuls of compote on top. Win Mom a Day Off You may not have the budget to truly indulge mom, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to create the perfect day for her with a little help from Bonne Maman, maker of preserves and jellies. In their effort to wish every mom a happy Mother’s Day, they are hosting a national sweepstakes for moms to “Win a Day Off.” By entering, you’ll give mom a chance to win $2,000 to spend on her deserved day off doing whatever makes her happy, plus $1,000 to share with someone she loves. The first 10,000 entrants receive a free sample of Bonne Maman plus a $2 coupon off their next purchase. To enter, visit www.BonneMaman.us. Spa Day Whether it’s a pedicure, massage or facial, your mom will appreciate the opportunity for total relaxation. Many spas offer gift certificates for particular services, so check out the options and find something just right for your mom. Mother’s Day can be a busy day for spas, so make it easy on her. Look for something close by and book her for a specific time so she doesn’t have to wait. For a successful Mother’s Day, considering thanking Mom for a job well done by giving her a break.

Year after year, Americans from Tornado Alley to the Gulf Coast to the metropolises of the Eastern Seaboard witness storms that cause millions in damage and loss of life. However, no matter where you live, or what type of extreme weather you may face, there are things you can do to protect your home and family from the worst. “When it comes to resilient design planning, the most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t have to break the bank. A few quick and easy adjustments can keep you safe,” says Greg Beste, member of the American Institute of Architects Disaster Assistance Committee and Project Management Director, IVI Assessment Services, a CBRE Company. Beste offers some storm season advice: • Document your home -- before disaster strikes. Grab

your smartphone and take photos of your home now, inside and out, covering the foundation and all interior and exterior spaces. At best, you’ll have a nice keepsake; at worst, a visual documentation that can be used for an insurance claim in case of disaster. You can also share the images with your insurance company right away, to add to their files for future reference. • Be an expert on your house. How old is your home? What type of framing does it have? When was the roof last repaired or replaced? These are questions you should know the answers to, as they will dictate what design changes should be made. • Make fixes easy, inexpensive and relevant. For example, are high winds a major worry where you live? Add an extra layer of protection by swapping out the shingles on your roof for a heavier material, or secure the roof sheathing with a more wind-resistant nailing pattern, using an extra box or two of nails. Know where your home is weakest; those spots are the first places to shore up in defense. • Communicate your building goals. If you’re working with an architect to build or retrofit your home, make sure that he or she understands the importance of resiliency. Even more importantly, your contractor should feel comfortable executing these goals. Communication at every step is the key. • Safe rooms are not a cause for panic. A safe room doesn’t have to be hightech. With the right design and construction, your mud room, laundry area or even a powder room can be a safe haven in case of disaster. • Design beyond code. Building codes are the minimum standard and in many cases, have not been updated to reflect the current reality. If you live in a particularly vulnerable area, an architect can advise on additional measures to take -- for instance, in coastal areas, building a foot higher than the minimum flood zone would indicate is recommended. Resources like www.architectfinder.aia.org can help you connect with the information and individuals you need. Don’t just wonder if you’ve done enough to prepare for storm season. Take action to keep your home and family safe.

ganic brands on social media to maximize deals and scout for bargains. Many organic brands run promotions, coupons and special offers that can help you buy more and spend less. Depending on the item, you can stock up during a sale and freeze for later. • One area where the benefit of organic is well proven is for infants and children: that’s because these are windows for rapid growth and development.

Make smart purchases. A 4-ounce jar of organic baby food can often be cheaper than a 4-ounce pouch, and has a longer shelf life. For example, Earth’s Best offers organic jars for babies four to six months old, starting at $0.99. Once opened, keep baby food jars and pouches refrigerated. Jars should be used within three days, and pouches within 24 hours. • In the past few years, organics have truly moved mainstream: 80 percent of households now purchase organic items at least some of the time, according to recent surveys from the Organic Trade Association. Many big box retailers, such as Walmart, Target and Kroger, now carry USDA organic products at low prices for babies, toddlers and older children, including baby food jars, pouches and frozen products from brands like Earth’s Best. More nutrition tips and organic products can be found at EarthsBest.com. With simple strategies, you can feed your family organic and stay within budget.

Grand Opening Special! $ COUPON

Also, purchase raw organic produce during its peak season, when supply is up and cost is down. Buy in bulk and freeze excess batches to extend shelf-life without significantly impacting nutritional value. • Follow your favorite or-

Chances are you’ve already heard about the benefits of including certified USDA organic foods in your diet. However, you may have also heard that such choices are typically higher in cost. “Eating right is in easier reach of Americans than ever before,” says Kate Geagan, America`s Green Nutritionist and expert consultant for Earth’s Best, the first organic baby food brand, in business for nearly 30 years. “Organic options are becoming more affordable and accessible thanks to many big retailers.” Looking to go organic? Geagan offers simple cost-cutting shopping strategies: • Prioritize where you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck. One of the most important places to start is with animal products, as certified organic meat, poultry and dairy products do not contain added synthetic growth hormones and antibiotics. An added benefit -- organic products prohibit the use of genetically modified organisms. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans includes 5 to 7-ounces of lean protein daily for adults and 2-ounces daily for children. Make purchases less wasteful and more cost effective by keeping these recommended portions in mind. • Avoid Environmental Working Groups’ “Dirty Dozen,” the 12 conventional fruits and vegetables that typically contain the highest levels of pesticide residues. Many of these foods, which include apples and potatoes, are family staples. So purchase these items organic if possible and thoroughly wash produce and remove the peel to reduce pesticide residue. • The farmers market is one of the most affordable resources for in-season, local food.
