New Ways to Safeguard Skin Year-Round Before and After Spending Time Outdoors

ADDICTION HELP CENTER 570-415-8016

A day outdoors can be enjoyable, but keep in mind that this UV exposure can take its toll on skin health. Researchers are identifying new potential ways to promote skin health from the inside out -- before, during and after you spend time outdoors. “Maintaining healthy DNA function safeguards your skin before and after spending time outdoors.” says Dr. Michael A. Smith, MD. According to Dr. Smith, researchers have confirmed that nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, plays a

significant role in producing Adenosine Tri-phosphate (ATP), the molecule that fuels all your cells and powers their intracellular machinery. By doing so, it also facilitates healthy DNA function. This is especially important as UV exposure can affect production of ATP in skin cells, sapping those cells of the energy needed for their protective mechanisms to function properly. Dr. Smith points out that as one ages, skin loses some of its natural defense mechanisms, however, nicotinamide has been shown

to support the natural immune response needed to safeguard against the age-related effects of UV exposure. Nicotinamide is found in dairy milk, yeast and beer, but to be sure to get your daily dose of nicotinamide, consider an oral supplement, such as Life Extension Shade Factor. Formulated to nourish skin from within the body, it provides 500 mg of vitamin B3. It also contains an extract that helps manage cellular changes in the body that can lead to premature aging from outdoor activity

and promotes healthy DNA function, as well as Red Orange Complex, which supports the body’s natural immune response. More information can be found at shadefactorsupp.com. According to Dr. Smith, this product is not a substitute for topical sunscreens. If you love the great outdoors, there is no need to give up your favorite hobbies, even as you age and your skin becomes more sensitive. New research suggests an inside out approach may be an effective way to help safeguard your body’s largest organ.

I just love going to Artisan Hearing Technologies. Jennifer takes time with me no matter what my needs are. I thought that my hearing aids would be hard to get used to, but it was natural. And I love being able to hear. The customer service is fantastic and the secretarial staff is very friendly at Artisan. I often don’t look forward to going to an appointment, but I always look forward to seeing the girls at Artisan.

Does Your Home Need Storm Doors? It’s that time of year again when you’ve installed screens in your windows to better enjoy the weather. But rain and wicked weather can impact your home at any time of year. Could your home use storm doors to add extra ventilation in warm weather and help protect it against tough conditions year-round? A storm door can be an effective defense for your house against bad weather and can also help improve energy efficiency during all seasons. Unfortunately, many people are reluctant to add this layer of protection due to outdated misconceptions about their appearance and versatility. “When homeowners invest money in an entry door, they often don’t want to cover that up with something they perceive as less attractive,” says Wes Ley, door brand manager at ProVia, a manufacturer of entry door systems and other home elements. “These days though, storm doors can be customized to complement the look of the entry door while providing unique performance advantages.” Storm door technology is offering options that are stronger and more durable than in the past. Ley advises that homeowners should “take another look at storm doors because they’re not what they used to be.” Here are a few things to consider: • A storm door can help protect your entry door investment. What’s more, designs vary, and full-view models show off the entry door while also protecting it. • Using a storm door, you can add extra ventilation to your home, helping you refrain from using the air conditioner and improving energy efficiency. • While many people perceive storm doors as being flimsy, there are high-quality options on the market designed for strength. For example, those from ProVia feature thick rails and aluminum, and a unique feature -- multiple hollow chambers -- which makes for sturdier construction. Their corner gussets prevent bending, twisting and corners from coming apart.

• Today’s storm doors are a far cry from the old models with the black handle and push button. New design options and hardware finishes include bronze, brass and satin nickel, offering better performance with a more attractive look. • Current storm door technology is bringing useful new features to consumers. For instance, ProVia’s InVent screens retract from both the top and bottom, offering more venting options. Because they are self-storing, they eliminate the hassle of seasonal installation and removal and save on storage space. To give your home a fresh update that offers protection, curb appeal and an opportunity to save on energy bills, consider adding a storm door to your home.

in May 1963, Pioneer Tunnel, which ceased operation in 1931, was retimbered and reopened as a place where visitors could experience a real anthracite coal mine. The Tunnel affords visitors an opportunity to learn how anthracite coal is mined. It shows how a vein of coal lies between rock and strata; it has a gangway, manways, and chutes. The temperature inside the mine averages 52 degrees. Our other featured attraction is a narrow gauge steam train ride aboard the Lokie Henry Clay. Lokie is a colloquial term for small locomotive. Henry Clay is a steam saddle tank engine of 30 tons used years ago to haul coal cars. Now it pulls passenger mine cars 3,000 feet along the side of Mahanoy Mountain.
