Patients, Families and Friends raise over $55,000 at the 2014 BloomsBurg Jorge’s Walk to deFeat als® (Bloomsburg, PA) – On Saturday, May 17 at Bloomsburg Town Park, over 550 people with ALS, family members, friends, caregivers, and others affected by Lou Gehrig’s Disease came together to raise over $55,000 at the 2014 Bloomsburg, Jorge’s Walk to Defeat ALS®. The event raised funds for research and communitybased patient services programs for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS, often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive motor neuron disease, which causes patients to eventually lose control of all voluntary muscles of the body. The walk was led by Rosa Snyder, who, along with a growing committee of dedicated families has seen this walk increase in success each year since it began in 2010. Rosa started the walk in memory of her father Jorge who passed away from ALS. “My heart aches with each new ALS story I hear, but I am then warmed by the love and compassion of everybody who participates in our walk,” said Rosa Snyder at the Bloomsburg, Jorge’s Walk to Defeat ALS®. “This year marks 75 years since Lou Gehrig said goodbye to baseball and we still do not have a cure, yet I know that with the outpouring of support from friends and allies here and across the country, we can and we will put an end to this disease for good.” The $55,000 raised will go towards quality care services and ALS research through the ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter, which serves over 850 people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in the eastern half of Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey, and all of Delaware. These services include four multidisciplinary clinics, inhome care, wheelchairs, communication devices, home ramping and more to improve the quality of life for ALS families. To make more of the trail more accessible for more people, BVRec is partnering with Earl’s Bicycle Store to offer a trail shuttle that day. This service will allow you to take a one-way ride or stroll and not have to worry about the logistics of getting picked up or getting your bikes back to your starting point. This will allow people

who can only manage a short out and back ride to stretch their miles and get to a new part of the trail. Those who can make it halfway and back will be able to try a one direction full length ride or run. Earl’s Bicycle Store will run a passenger van pulling a trailer. You can catch a ride, starting at 9:30am from the parking lot in Hufnagle Park in Lewisburg and leaving from the Mifflinburg Community Park trailhead at 10am. The shuttle will run hourly, leaving Hufnagle Park on the half hour and Mifflinburg Community Park on the hour through 4pm. There will be interim stops at Earl’s Bicycle Store on Fairground Rd and at the Vicksburg Trailhead, in both directions. On May 16-18 at the Middlecreek Valley Antique Association Spring Show in Selinsgrove the SUN Area Dairy Promotion Committee held the annual SUN Area Ag Dairy Days. The weekend started out with a celebrity cow milking contest and cheese tasting on May 16. The overall winner of the celebrity cow milking contest was Ralph Miller President of the Central PA Vintage Iron Club. On May 17 we introduced our new SUN Area Dairy Promotion team. Then we ended the weekend on May 18 with a free ice cream sundae. Our 2013-2014 SUN Area Dairy Princess Miss Ashley Wetzel crowned the new 2014-2015 SUN Area Dairy Princess Miss Lacey Smith. Lacey is the 19 year old daughter of Allen and Tammy Smith of Mifflinburg. She is a 2012 graduate of Mifflinburg Area High School. In she was active in the FFA chapter. Lacey does not live on a dairy farm but has family who area dairy farmers and is also active in showing livestock at the Union County West End Fair. Lacey was the 2012 Miss Union County West End Fair Queen. Lacey enjoys reading, writing, and also baking. Lacey also works at Texas Roadhouse in Selinsgrove.

Blair, the daughter of Randal and Linda Digan received the award for excellence in academics, leadership, and agricultural work experience. Digan’s significant experiences and accomplishments have included a supervised agricultural experience program consisting of Pleasure Horse, and On-farm work experience. Blair has served various leadership positions on the chapter and SUN Area level including SUN Area Treasurer, and chapter treasurer. As a winner of the 2014 award, Blair Digan’s name will be recorded on a permanent plaque displayed at Mifflinburg High School. No longer can we say childhood diabetes is only Type 1 Diabetes. 30.8% more kids are getting Type 2 Diabetes now than in 2008, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. 50% of our kids are overweight or obese, it’s not hard to imagine that obesity diseases are following. Kids today are eating more junk food than natural food. Other studies have shown that kids are getting 1 serving or less of vegetables per day, yet are eating between 1/3 to ½ pound of sugar daily. There are more pesticides, chemicals, and dangerous additives to our foods and that these foods are being fed to younger and younger kids. Another reason is that within the first 2 years of life, we are vaccinated and exposed to lethal levels of mercury, diseases that killed millions, and arrested access to nature’s most nutritious food for humans: breast milk. The study did show one interesting fact: The rise of both types of diabetes occurs across ethnic, sex, and affluence lines. It also showed that kids that are homeschooled or part of a community, like the Amish, are exempt from the trend. Children who are active and are provided good nutrition do better in school, are a healthy weight and avoid disease. Foods need to be whole, fresh, and free of chemicals. There are many adult studies that show this type of diet keeps adults free of disease. A diet rich in vegetables is shown to reverse some diseases. Let’s try feeding out kids healthy foods and increase their activities. This will keep them healthier, like it did before mass testing and forced studying. The follow-up to the childhood studies show that when the diet changed to more fruits and vegetables, exercise is increased, and parents take an active role in their kids lives, health problems such as diabetes and obesity completely reverse.
