Self-Defense & Safety Tips for Travelers this Summer
ver since the horrible events of September 11th, 2001, many who once ignored the dangers they could be exposed to while traveling, forever altered their way of looking at the world. The truth is there has been dangers present for travelers for as long as there have been humans on the planet. And, while in most areas of the world, you probably don’t have to worry about bandits along the road, or having your cruise ship taken over by pirates, there are still plenty of bad guys out there with an agenda and you as a potential target. Here’s a list of safety and self-defense tips that I teach my clients who travel. The tips themselves are general and not specific to mode or method of transportation. Of course, your life is your own but it’s important to remember that when developing a self-defense strategy, you should begin by examining your own habits and patterns. Remember that the attacker will show up where you feel comfortable and safe. Where ever you go, that environment is where the assailant or other danger will come from. Survival Tips for the Smart Traveler 1. Stay Informed. Do

Having a handy little pack which includes things that will make it easier to stay safe and alive should something happen is always a good idea. Of course, your kit will be designed around your trip and the possible dangers you might face. 3. Learn Some Safety Skills. These might include some wilderness survival training, self-defense tactics for defending against muggers, and being able to swim and stay afloat in water deeper than your pool. 4. Carry a “Dummy Wallet.” During a mugging, the assailant is usually just after a quick buck because he doesn’t have time. Carrying a wallet with ten or twenty dollars in small bills and even some old, expired credit cards, is a type of “insurance” that will allow your attacker to think he’s gotten something while allowing you to go unharmed or give up your hard-earned valuables. 5. Be Prepared. The Boy and Girl Scout motto is just as viable today as it was when you were going on a camping trip with
your childhood leaders. The more you can know and do in a crisis situation, or preferably in avoiding one altogether, the better off you will be. Consider your training and preparation to be insurance. Actually, it’s better than conventional insurance because... On Independence Day, we commemorate the birth of a nation and the foundation on which it was builtthose inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Sounds pretty solemn, but there’s a few items that didn’t make the history books. Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8th, 1776. John Hancock and Charles Thompson were the only two delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. The consequences of breaking away from the

mother country was extremely serious and dangerous. The original document was not signed until August 2, 1776 for the other documents. With the vote independence cast, national emblems began to emerge. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson served on the committee that picked the eagle as the national symbol. Franklin believe or not, wanted a turkey. Before cars, the 4th of July was the most miserable day for horses because of all the noise. Young boys and girls were celebrating by throwing firecrackers at them. How many of us have dogs that fear the faithful July
4th fireworks?? During the 19th century, the country celebrated by firing explosives in the air from cannons in a series of salutes. As the cannons wore out, we began importing fireworks from other countries. Eventually we became self sufficient and learned how to make our own and the tradition has continues every since. At one time, green was the color of the day. Buildings were adorned in green and soldiers wore it on their uniforms. Eventually the colors of the flag took over. Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4th and both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day
in 1826. As you gather around the grill and wait for the sky to explode in a celebration of liberty, fly your flag high and keep a prayer in your heart for those Americans who still fight for someone’s right to be free.
