Summer travel season is upon us and a new survey reveals just where all those vehicles on the highway may be headed. Americans indicated they are willing to drive the farthest for love and family, with fewer willing to drive long distances for sporting and entertainment events. In particular, 42 percent surveyed indicated they would drive the farthest to see a love interest over any other activity and 25 percent indicated they would do so to attend a wedding, according to the new “How Far Would You Drive?” survey from Enterprise RentA-Car. Additionally, 20 percent said they are willing to drive five or more hours to see their child’s sporting event, while only nine percent are willing to drive that same distance to see their favorite professional football team play. More than one-third also indicated they would drive five or more hours to attend a family reunion and a quarter said they would even do so to meet their in-laws. “We hear anecdotal stories from our customers all the time about what inspires them to embark on road trips, and it’s a thrill to see how we play a role in our customers’ lives,” said Lee Broughton, vice president, Enterprise Rent-A-Car Brand Marketing. “While love and family may spark individuals to drive the farthest, interests such as sports, music and food still earn significant car time.”

How to Best Protect Your Skin this Summer and Beyond Despite the warnings about the aging effects the sun can have on your skin, only five percent of Americans apply sunscreen to their body daily, according to a recent survey conducted using GfK’s Knowledge Panel. While experts say that using sunscreen should be a yearround habit, during the active, outdoor days of summer, it’s even more critical. “Make this the year that you adopt a healthy summer sun care routine for your skin, particularly if you spend long periods of time in the sun,” encourages Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick of the Brevard Skin and Cancer Center. Kirkpatrick offers several skin-protecting tips for sun lovers: Everyday Protection The midday hours are the most hazardous for UV exposure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends staying in the shade when possible and using sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. For everyday sunscreen options for your face, look for hypoallergenic formulas that won’t clog pores. NO-AD’s new Oil-Free Face SPF 30 sunscreen is ultra-light, dermatologist tested and recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation for daily use. It contains watermelon extract to help protect against skin cell DNA damage caused by UV light. And best of all, it offers twice the quantity as other national brands at lower cost. For a convenient on-thego option, consider a wide-format stick, such as NO-AD’s new Sport Body & Face Stick, which goes on smoothly with no mess, is geared toward sensitive skin, and offers broad-spectrum SPF 50 sun protection.

MIFFLINBURG

340 East Chestnut Street

Outdoor and Water Enthusiasts Runners, hikers, swimmers and other outdoor athletes should bear in mind that conventional sunscreens may wash off after water sports or a vigorous workout. For those who spend long hours in the water, consider new BullFrog Surf Formula Gel, an alcohol-free, preservativefree, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic sunscreen that allows for frequent reapplication without irritation. It includes a water-resistant agent extracted from pine rosin, a naturally renewable source, and provides broad-spectrum SPF 36 protection. BullFrog’s new Quik Stik SPF 50 is a convenient clear zinc mineral sunscreen, which applies quickly with no sticky, white residue. Self-Tanners To get the sun-kissed look, you don’t actually need to spend long hours in the sun. Consider a self-tanner, like Ocean Potion EverGlow Xtreme Self-Tanning Lotion, which delivers subtle color within hours and a rich tan in only three days instead of the usual seven. This moisturizing lotion works on all skin tones, and contains vitamins A, C and E to promote skin health and a youthful appearance. Unlike unpleasant smelling self-tanners, this one has a fresh mango-lime fragrance. For more sun care tips, visit no-ad.com, oceanpotion. com, or bullfrogsunscreen.com. Remember, exposure to the sun causes skin to suffer from premature aging. By protecting your skin this summer and beyond, you can slow this effect.

Four Home Projects to Turn Chores to Checks on Your To-Do List Home improvement doesn’t have to be a hassle, and you don’t necessarily need an abundance of time or an expensive tool set for quick fixes. Yet, 52 percent of homeowners between the ages of 25 and 45 have unfinished tasks they need completed, and more than three-quarters of them say they don’t have enough time or money to finish their projects, according to a 2014 survey by Black+Decker. Fill Wall Cracks Over time, small cracks in walls will grow bigger and more noticeable. Fix them yourself with a simple formula. Mix together one-eighth cup of baking soda and two to three drops of Krazy Glue to create a paste and fill in the crack. After a few seconds, the paste will become a hard plastic that you can sand down easily. With a touch-up of paint, the wall will look brand new. For quick touch-ups in the future, keep a spare baby jar of extra paint on hand. Create Clean Air Air conditioning units require maintenance. Use a shop-vac or long vacuum

add-on to remove dust and debris that have built up in the unit during the off-season. Replace the filter to ensure clean air comes into your home. You can even add a few drops of essential oil to the filter to keep your house smelling fresh between cleanings.

Tend to Trim To easily repair chipped crown molding or peeling baseboards, use a long-lasting formula, such as Krazy Glue’s new Maximum Bond Industrial Speed & Strength formula, which works quickly on wood, bonding in less than 30 seconds. Apply a few drops to broken or peeling pieces and hold them against the baseboard or molding. Beyond aesthetic fixes, you can use glue for functional repairs that can save you money, such as mend-

ing ripped rubber weather stripping. A few drops of glue can improve energy efficiency in your home by keeping cool air in and summer warmth out. Deep Clean Decks Your yard may have taken a beating over the last several months. Deck maintenance usually costs less than $100 a year, but replacing a deck completely could take up to $10,000 from your pockets. Maintain a tidy backyard deck by removing all leaves and twigs between the floorboards and scrubbing down the surface with a deck cleaning solution. For a cost-effective, DIY mixture, simply mix bleach and water. Freshen up the surface with a wood stain or sealant to prevent it from rotting. Your deck is the perfect place for entertaining and summer cookouts, so it’s important to keep it looking its best From small indoor fixes to large outdoor tasks, you don’t need to a lot of time, skills or money for many home improvement projects that can help you maintain an enjoyable living space.

Beat the heat this 4th of July and throughout summer with some delicious and refreshing celebration tips. It’s all about keeping your cool when preparing and enjoying fun meals. Cool, Crisp Wine Stick with fresh and crisp white wines that complement lighter, warm weather fare. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are classic white wine varietals easily found at grocery stores. Chardonnay, a medium bodied wine with notes of fresh melon and pineapple, makes an excellent pairing with BBQ chicken or richer seafood dishes, such as crab or salmon. A wine to try is St. Francis Sonoma County Chardonnay 2013, made from grapes handpicked in the cool of night to create a wine with delicate aromas, crisp acidity, and a rich, lingering finish. For a lighter bodied wine, Sauvignon Blanc, with a highly aromatic fruit profile, is perfect for salads, sushi and fresh, young cheeses such as goat cheese. For your 4th of July picnic, consider grabbing a bottle of St. Francis Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2014 that features crisp flavors

and aromas of citrus, kiwi, and mango with a touch of lime. Chilled Dishes In summer, the last place you want to be is in a hot, humid kitchen. The perfect solution is to make classic chilled dishes like fruit sorbets, tomato salsas, fresh green salads and seafood carpaccio. For summer’s most refreshing meal, St. Francis Winery Chef Bryan Jones shares his recipe for Chilled Potato-Leek Soup with White Truffle Oil and Lemon. Pair with St. Francis Sonoma County 2013 Chardonnay or 2014 Sauvignon Blanc and serve with a light green salad and a baguette with goat cheese. Ingredients: • 2 russet potatoes, diced • 3 leeks • 3 cloves garlic, chopped • 3 tablespoons butter • 4 cups water • 1/2 cup heavy cream • 2 teaspoons salt • White truffle oil • 1 lemon • 4 chive strands • Salt and white pepper to taste Preparation: • Trim off the green end of leeks, slice in half lengthwise and rinse. Dice leeks. Heat 3 tbsp of butter in a medium sauce pan over medium heat. Add leeks, garlic and 2 tsp salt. Cook until leeks are soft but not brown, stirring occasionally. • Add diced potatoes to leeks and cover with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, and reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes or until potatoes fall apart. • Add cream, bring to a boil and remove from heat. Let cool to almost room temperature. Purée in a blender until texture is creamy. • Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Adjust seasoning and place in refrigerator to chill. • Divide soup into bowls. Drizzle with a small amount of white truffle oil. Zest a small amount of lemon and sprinkle with chopped fresh chives. Enjoy. CERTIFIED SENIOR ADVISORS

Want to learn how to save money? You’re not alone. An overwhelming number of Americans want to learn more about managing their finances, according to a recent Wells Fargo survey. “One way to manage debt is to pay it down sooner,” says Gary Korotzer, who leads the Wells Fargo Consumer Credit Solutions Marketing team. “You can save on interest over time and on the total cost of borrowing.” Korotzer offers these tips to save money by paying off debt sooner: • Pay off debt sooner and save significantly on interest by paying more than the minimum each month on loans. Also, try paying half your monthly bill every two weeks instead of the full amount monthly; you’ll make one extra payment over the course of a year -- and you could pay your debt off sooner. Ask if your lender applies these partial payments to your principal. • Prioritize paying off loans with the highest interest rate first. • Bank with a responsible lender that gives you options for paying down debt on terms better for your bottom line. For example, Wells Fargo offers consumers options that could shorten the length of loans, such as refinancing and debt consolidation. There are many different ways to consolidate debt, so talk to your bank about your options. • Reduce your overall monthly expenses by lowering the rate of your current loans. If your credit score has im-

proved or if overall interest rates have gone down since applying for a particular loan, you may be able to lower the rate of your auto, home, personal, or student loans or your credit cards. Consider any fees that might be associated with refinancing. • Be savvy about credit. Check all three national credit bureaus annually to verify there are no errors. Don’t worry; requesting your reports won’t affect your credit score. • Know your limits. Being close to or maxing out your credit limits may negatively impact your credit score. Keep balances low on credit cards and other revolving accounts; keeping your balance below 30 percent of your total available credit may improve your credit score. Always pay on time, and more than the minimum due, if possible. • Use free educational resources, such as Wells Fargo’s newly redesigned Smarter Credit Center (www. wellsfargo.com/smarter_credit) to help you make responsible financial decisions. The site offers interactive features that explain key credit concepts, such as building credit, improving or rebuilding credit, taking charge of existing debt and practicing good credit habits. The redesign is more mobile friendly, letting you learn even when you’re on the go. Getting better money management skills can help you lower your monthly expenses on big ticket items like loan repayment and reduce the overall cost of your debt over time.

excess calorie consumption impairs the enzymatic activity of AMPK. Unfortunately, most humans today suffer chronic nutritional overload, say experts. Solutions Researchers have discovered four ways to boost the body’s AMPK activity: • Exercise: AMPK activity increases with regular vigorous exercise. • Restrict calories: By taking in fewer calories, you create increased AMPK activity as cells sense a requirement to function more efficiently. • Metformin: One of the drug metformin’s most beneficial mechanisms is to activate AMPK. This is one way it lowers elevated glucose. However, most physicians only prescribe metformin for Type II Diabetes, making access to this drug difficult for most people. • Botanical Extracts: Two natural agents, the Chinese herb Gynostemma pentaphyllum and trans-tiliroside derived from rose hips, have been shown to activate AMPK, reducing belly fat, cholesterol, blood sugar, and insulin levels. You can supplement your diet with an AMPK activator to turn off many damaging effects of aging. More information can be found at LifeExtension.com/activateAMPK. Over the years, you don’t just have to quietly accept weight gain and the effects of aging. Take advantage of the new scientific findings that can help you promote a long, healthy and fit life.

weet, fresh and satisfying, Donna Morgan’s Strawberry Cream Cheese Pie is a terrific blend of light summer berries and creamy cream cheese. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch and dinner... and maybe for a snack too. The best part of this recipe is it makes two pies, so you can keep one all for yourself! See step-by-step photos of Donna’s recipe plus thousands more from home cooks nationwide at: www.justapinch.com/strawberrypie You’ll also find a meal planner, coupons and chances to win! Enjoy and remember, use “just a pinch”...

Tips to Save Money on Pet Care Being a great pet parent can be an expensive proposition if you aren’t careful. Spoiling your furry friends doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny. The discount experts at Dollar General are offering pet care tips for those on a budget. DIY Grooming Although it may be tempting to drop your pet off at a professional groomer to be bathed and brushed, you can save a fortune by doing it yourself. Set aside a time each week or month to bathe, brush and pamper your pet. You can even get the kids involved! Your pet will love the extra attention, and you will love the savings. Watch What They Eat It’s important to find a food that works for your pet’s dietary needs and falls within your budget. For great deals, consider shopping at a discount retailer. For example, Dollar General offers exclusive pet food

and treats brands, Forever Pals and EverPet. Both offer a variety of choices at an affordable price that will make both you and your pet happy. They also carry a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee, so it’s a risk-free trial if you aren’t fully satisfied with the products. You can also save money on pet food by following label instructions on food packaging and not over-

feeding pets. With a proper and balanced diet, you can help keep your pet healthier and happier, and spend less in the process. Quality Time The most important bond between pets and owners is quality time and love. Spending at least a small

part of your day exercising and playing with your pets means the world to them and is a great stress reliever for you. Plus, it doesn’t cost a cent to shower your pet with affection! Smart Shopping Sometimes the cost of owning and caring for a pet can be stressful when trying to budget for the rest of your family. Instead of shopping for items like treats, flea and tick medication, pet shampoo, leashes and collars at a pet-specific store or your veterinarian’s office, consider shopping at Dollar General or online at dollargeneral.com, which has a variety of merchandise for your pets’ needs at affordable prices. With more than 11,800 stores nationwide, you’re likely to find a store nearby. You can also visit pinterest. com/mydollargeneral for more helpful tips. With some time, attention and smart budgeting, you can be the best pet parent you can be.
