What’s a Good Age to Start?
A
re you considering martial arts for your child? Are you worried about the bullying, hazing, and danger your child may encounter in school? This article will give you some clarity on the subject from the standpoint of self-defense - rather than “how ‘cute’ little Johnny looks in his uniform!” One of the most common questions parents ask concerns the best age to start a child in martial arts. And, while schools are different - it comes down to not only age, but also the type of program being offered. While many children begin as early as two or two and a half, they’re typically “home-trained” by a parent who themselves train. Even these children don’t really enter a formal class until around four. At this age, they’re developing better attention spans, memory retention, and the ability to communicate well and stay on topic. That said, it really depends on your child. However, one thing which should be kept in mind is that your child is not an “adult-brain” in a

child’s body. Sounds obvious, I know, but you’d be amazed by how many parents and teachers believe young children learn things for the same reason we adults teach them! And that’s just the beginning of the confusion. Add the fact that, unlike most conventional sports like baseball and soccer, most adults have no idea what to look for when it comes to self-defense training, or even where to begin. Training for young children must be centered around both character trait development, and what dnagers your child may run into. A good, solid program would never teach a younger child the same things taught to adults. The main reason for this is simply because your child is not going to be able to take on a determined adult or larger child using the same tactics. Why? Because the size and strength advantage is just too great! This means that training for young childen, 3 or 4 through at least 6 years old, should focus on evasion tactics and skills that will help them escape from things like: • pushing • shoving • slapping, and... • kicking
A good program will also include defenses against an adult abductor trying to carry the child off -- one of the greatest dangers to very small children. In addition, skills which focus on coordination, socialization, manners, respect, and discipline should be incorporated. Remember, young children have specific needs and dangers that must be accounted for when looking for a child development program, and that includes martial arts. If you’re looking for a sport or recreational form of martial arts for kids, practically any style or school will do. But, if you’re a concerned parent whose looking for answers and a self-defense education for your child, then you need to know what to look for, and make sure the instructors are teaching what you and your child will need.
