Meet 4-H Member Jason Eichenlaub Jacob Eichenlaub is the son of Troy and Shari Eichenlaub of Mifflinburg. He is 17 years old and will be entering into the 11th grade at Mifflinburg Area High School in the fall. Jacob is another 4-H’er with a long history of family who have come through the program. Both of Jacob’s siblings, Josh and Sarah, his mother Shari and her father David Foresman have all participated in 4-H. Additionally, Jacob’s cousin’s Ray, Kyle and Seth have been in clubs. Jacob has been in 4-H for 8 years and kept busy during that time. He is a member of the Good Time 4-H club, the Buffalo Valley Sharp Shooters, 4-H Farm Safety Bowl team and the Union County Teen Council. He is currently the club president. Jacob has done project work in bottle and Estes rocketry, tie dying, woodworking, air pistol and air rifle. He says his favorite project is woodworking because he loves to see what can be made out of a piece of wood. In 2014, Jacob won a Best of Show award at the Union County West End Fair with a wood

and glass table he made to store and display his collection of milk bottles. Jacob says he had always wanted to show animals so that is why he joined 4-H. He has shown a variety of animals through the club including pigs, horses dairy beef, breeding beef and dairy goats. He continues to show animals through the Mifflinburg FFA Chapter. Jacob attended the 4-H State Leadership Conference this past January in State College. Jacob is one of those people who will help anyone he can. Every year in 4-H we have a multicounty roller skating kick off party. When I was younger, I had some youth skates that wouldn’t roll backwards. As I’ve grown, I have to use the rental skates. Jacob saw that I was struggling to stay on my feet during one of these events 2 years ago and took the time to help me up a few times after I fell. He also took me around the rink a couple of times so I could have fun too. Jacob makes our meetings fun but makes sure we accomplish what

Valley Vehicle Fin er Funding Needed for National Parks Improvements

VALLEY HO E IMPROVEMENT

Local roads, bridges, and other transit are integral parts of the national park experience. However, parks and their transportation infrastructure are facing a mounting financial challenge, say experts. Under the current law, the National Park Service is guaranteed $240 million per year for transportation projects through the Federal Highway Trust Fund, which advocates say is only one quarter of the amount needed annually to guarantee safe access to national parks. “With national park visits at an all-time high, more park funding, not less, is what’s needed to address the $6 billion worth of overdue and delayed transportation projects on the

parks have the resources they need to thrive.” Information about transportation needs and funding opportunities in national parks can be found by visiting www.npca.org. National parks around the country provide natural, educational, recreational, cultural and historical experiences for millions of visitors. In fact, there were 292.8 million visits to national parks in 2014, breaking the previous record of 287.2 million visits set in 1987. With national parks more popular than ever, it’s likely you’ll find yourself on a park road soon enough. Experts say that well-funded national park roads and bridges will help keep visitors safer and make their national park experiences more enjoyable.

The National Park Service manages 1,500 bridges and about 10,000 miles of roads nationwide, including rural national park drives and major urban thoroughfares. From corroding support beams on park bridges to outmoded roads that create dangerous drop-offs, un-

funded projects can pose a safety hazard to motorists, cyclists, hikers, park staff, emergency responders and wildlife. “Not only should Congress ensure national parks are safe, but investing in them spurs economic growth and supports jobs,” says Loomis. “The 100th anniversary of the National Park System in 2016 is a historic opportunity for Congress to ensure our national

Tips for ‘Kids Eat Right Month’ this August You want the best for your kids. As role models, parents and caregivers play a vital role in children’s health -- teaching kids about healthful foods and making sure they get enough daily physical activity. More than one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese, according to recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. But childhood obesity, which is associated with elevated risks of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, bone and joint problems and sleep apnea, amongst other adverse health effects, can usually be prevented. “August, which is Kids Eat Right Month, is the perfect opportunity for families to focus on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles,” says Marina Chaparro, registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. To help, Chaparro is offering parents and caregivers tips they can use to promote healthy habits. • Shop smart. Get your children involved in selecting the food that will appear at the breakfast, lunch or dinner table. Be adventurous by picking a new food every week. • Cook healthfully. Involve your children in the preparation of all meals with age-appropriate tasks. Getting your

kids involved helps teach them about food, and may entice them to try new foods they helped prepare. • Eat right. Breakfast is a critical meal. Make sure no one in the family skips it -- including you. In the evening, sit down together as a family to enjoy dinner and the opportunity to share the day’s experiences with one another. Research indicates that families who eat together have a stronger bond, and children have higher selfconfidence and perform better in school. • Plan wisely. When planning meals, start by filling half the plate with fruits and vegetables, choosing lowsodium options. Make sure at least half the grains your family eats are whole grains. For beverages, choose water over sugary drinks, and opt for fat-free or low-fat milk. Also, be mindful of appropriate portion sizes. • Get moving. After meals, get moving together. Aside

from being a great way to spend time together, regular physical activity strengthens muscle and bones, helps to achieve a healthy body weight and supports learning. It can also help develop social skills and build selfesteem. Kids are encouraged to be active for 60 minutes per day. • Consult an expert. A registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) can deliver the highest level of nutrition counseling. Consider consulting an RDN to ensure your family is getting needed nutrients with a meal plan tailored to your family’s lifestyle and busy schedule. To search for an RDN in your area, to find more healthful eating tips, recipes and videos, and to learn more about Kids Eat Right Month, visit KidsEatRight.org. As a parent, you are highly influential, and habits formed early on could potentially last a lifetime. Take steps to steer kids to a path of good health.

How to Lower Your Mortgage Payments Are you a homeowner who is current on your mortgage and looking to lower your interest rate? Alternatively, would you like to shorten your mortgage term and build equity faster? You may be able to take advantage of a long standing federal program to save hundreds of dollars on your mortgage payment every month or shorten your mortgage term and save money in the long run. The Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) is a unique program that helps certain homeowners refinance their mortgage to a more affordable monthly payment and at better terms. With HARP now extended through December 2016, homeowners across the country have more time to take advantage of this program to save money every month. If you purchased a home before June 2009, have little or no equity in your home but are current on your mortgage payment (meaning no 30-day-plus late payments in the last six months and no more than one in the past 12 months), and the loan is owned by Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae, you may be eligible to refinance your mortgage through HARP. More than 3.3 million Americans have taken advantage of HARP since 2009, saving them $200 on average per month. Here’s how you can take advantage of this program: • Gather your basic financial information before you contact your mortgage company. You’ll need: Your latest mortgage statements, including information on a second mortgage (if appli-

cable); and your current income details (paystub or income tax return). • Find out if Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac owns your loan. In order to qualify for HARP, your loan must be owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Contact your mortgage company or visit www. knowyouroptions.com/loanlookup or https:// ww3.freddiemac.com/loanlookup/. If your loan is owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, ask your lender if it is an approved HARP lender. Be prepared to provide the information necessary to verify your current source of income. If your lender is not an approved HARP lender, find out who is near you on the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac websites. • Go through the application, approval and closing process. If your lender determines you qualify for HARP, they will guide you through the process. HARP has no appraisal requirements or loanto-value limits, so you can apply regardless of how far your home may have fallen in value. Without this program, qualifying for refinancing can be virtually impossible for homeowners who are underwater. Remember, the opportunity to get a HARP refinance expires December 31, 2016 and there is still time to take advantage of low mortgage rates. Make 2015 the year you take the step to save money on your home loan. Call your lender to apply now and begin to save. For more information, visit www.HARP.gov.

Why You Should Adopt a Dog

The Susquehanna Valley’s Home of Rock and Roll

Dogs make a house a home; there is no doubt about it. If you have ever thought about including a dog in your family, here are several reasons to consider moving ahead on adoption. Health Benefits Between walks in the morning, walks in the evening and daily play time, dogs get everyone in the family active and moving each day -an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Dogs may have pervasive positive effects on human health, according to the National Institutes of Health, which reports that groups of new pet owners showed a significant reduction in minor health problems compared to those without pets. Other studies have shown that spending time with animals can reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Why Adopt? Between six and eight million homeless pets enter shelters every year. Because shelters cannot handle all the dogs that need a place to live, many that don’t get adopted are euthanized. Adopting a dog is a conscientious decision to make because it means

you are saving a life. Furthermore, animals in shelters receive medical care during their stay. As an adopter, you can be better informed about the state of your new pet’s health, as shelters keep great records on vaccinations and other treatments. Lastly, adopting a pet is a

much more affordable route to dog ownership than buying a dog from a breeder or store. Where to Adopt Dog adoption events are an excellent way to meet lots of potential pets at once, helping you find a dog whose temperament would be a good fit for your home and family. Thankfully, many groups are helping to make such events happen. For ex-

ample, Coldwell Banker Real Estate is teaming up with Adopt-a-Pet.com to organize the Homes for Dogs National Pet Adoption Weekend on August 1-2, 2015. This nationwide event builds on the success of the “Homes for Dogs Project,” a national campaign hosted by Coldwell Banker and Adopt-aPet.com, which aims to find homes for 20,000 adoptable dogs in 2015. “It’s shocking to think of how many homeless dogs enter shelters each year,” says Sean Blankenship, chief marketing officer for Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC. “That’s why we launched this program; between our 86,000 sales associates and the 15,000 Adopt-a-Pet.com shelters and rescues, we’re hoping that we can truly make a difference.” The Homes for Dogs National Pet Adoption Weekend is expected to be one of the largest adoption events of the year. A list of pet adoption events is available at www.adoptapet.com/ homesfordogs. To add laughter and love to your life, consider sharing it with a dog in need.
